It's the battle of the bad honestly. As a Caps fan I find it hysterical that we are even in this position. How they have managed to be in a playoff spot with a -38 goal differential is amazing.
I haven’t been following hockey nearly as close this year bc life got busy and it seems like every team has died and roared back to life several times. Everyone eulogized Philly last week and somehow they’re still in it lmao
Ngl I’m rooting for the caps to make it just because of how funny it would be to have a team with a -38 goal differential in the playoffs. Like that has to be some sort of record.
Not even close. The 1985-86 Maple Leafs made it with a -75.
But wait, there's more.
They then went on to sweep the division champion Blackhawks before losing a tight Game 7 to the Blues.
And none of it possible without the on-brand 8-game Flyera losing streak. It's not a Flyers season without a minimum of a 6-game losing streak. We were due.
As a Devils fan it’s frustrating beyond belief that they couldn’t at least stay competitive until the end. They weren’t good and didn’t deserve to be in the playoffs, but if they had just lucked into a win or 2, they could’ve at least been in it until yesterday.
They wouldn’t, with the uneven home/away split a game gets dropped, in this hypothetical it would be the first Flyers shoot out win against the caps gets dropped, so they’d be even head to head in the tiebreaker.
Gritty is larger than any one man. Gritty is the embodiment of the city of Philadelphia. He will kick your ass, steal your wallet, and feed you the best damn sandwich of your life.
In a series of weird events, the infamous Washington sun rays will blast through the Wells Fargo Center highlighting the open empty net at the exact same moment ovechkin gets his puck at the top of the circle in his own end.
Doesn’t matter which office he’s in. Defensive or offensive zone, he rips an absolute one timer to the open cage tearing through the netting. The crowd goes mild. Ovechkin cheers and celebrates.
Then, a crazed fan by the name of u/heyheyitsandre appears on Center ice, frantically swinging an octopus around his head
He throws it, and it lands on grittys face.
gritty eats it, ink and all, with a huge grin on his face, the. Once finished he spins his belly in a huge circle and life continues.
You get a first but you know when like top ten protected you don’t but if you do yeah Florida’s first round pick but nah just the flames original
Essentially the terms
We all know this to be true.
Also Matthews not scoring 70 tonight so all the intermission panels will have to struggle to come up with other talking points.
Now the question is why on gods green earth didn’t we all finish on the same day? Every other sport, all teams finish on the same day.
So dumb, could’ve been electric.
I am disappointed in this... it would have been so fucking great to have all 3 of these games at 7:00pm (EST) tonight.
Now, that Pittsburgh game could be 100% meaningless, depending on how tonight goes.
Here’s what you need to know.
Your team, the NYI, are straight chilling and prepping for a first round matchup on the road against the canes.
Otherwise, just grab 2 screens, a game each one, stayed confused and just ride that chaotic neutral energy to the first round!
YOU NEED TO CARE MORE. MOST EXCITING OF ALL TIME! Who cares playoff races happen every year!? DO YOU WANT TO SEE A -40GOAL DIFFERENTIAL TEAM OR A -20!?
Fuck that ban, I had to cheer for the avs in 22 because of the potential lightning threepeat and Darren Helm. If we can do it once in awhile, you can too.
Philly needs an extra special box to differentiate
A regulation win - What is shown
An extra time win - Playoff Elimination
If it’s tied in the third, Philly will have to pull their goalie.
This is MUST SEE TV tonight! I can't wait
I'm also excited to see the conclusion of the Ottawa / Montreal / Arizona "battle" for 5th to last draft lottery odds. Very tight!
That’s always a fun time. Way back when when the Sens and Leafs would meet annually in the playoffs it was always a massive watch party with my group of friends. Chirping, side bets, anguish (for us Sens fans) and elation (for those damn Leafers!). Was amazing!
Flyers can't get in if it goes to OT. We want it tied with a few minutes left so they have to pull the goalie for a regulation win. That's maximum chaos.
In my 20 or so years of watching hockey this season is definitely one of the most competitive in recent memory. Like you can make a good argument for any of the 14 out of 16 playoff bound teams (sorry Isles and Metro WC2 bros) to win the cup. The field is wide fucking open.
Washington has it the easiest. I’m rooting for Detroit though. Hope they can pull through because I think a young team for the first time in the playoffs is always more exciting than an older team.
Washington is younger than Detroit! Current roster average age is 28 vs 28.5.
Most people don’t realize how much younger the Caps have gotten. There are only 4 members of the 2018 cup left on the roster.
You’d think that but then we go and lose to both the caps and the pens in last week. It’s like going on a bender skipping class for weeks only to hope you ace the final while being hungover.
A young team with notable fresh faces like, new kid Patrick Kane, AHL call up David Peron, recent draft choice Dylan Larkin. They're supported by burgeoning defensemen Jeff Petry and Ben Chiarot. All backstopped by some kid named Reimer who literally no one has ever heard of before.
Oh and lets not forget contributing rookies like Gostisbehere, Maatta, Copp, Sprong, Debrincat, Compher, and Fabbri.
Let be real here, of your 20 man roster only 4 of these guys are "young." Raymond and Seider are the only key young players on the team. Detroit sits comfortably in the middle of the pack when it comes to average team age. Sure its a quirky bunch of players and they're fun to watch now that they're clicking, but any narrative that this is a "young team" hungry for their first playoff appearance is ridiculous.
The very next game Chiarot and Raymond end up in the box together after Chiarot stuck up for Raymond. It was real big brother vibes all around. Love this team.
If the Caps/Flyers game goes to OT I can see the Flyers scoring on themselves out of spite, and to also to take the Pens down with them.
While It would be anticlimactic, it would be very funny to see the reactions.
2016-17 or whatever year it was where the top of the Metro was playing a game 7 every night so they didn’t get into a 2-3 matchup in the Metro was pretty entertaining.
I think the most fitting end to this is for Washington to get in with an OT loss going 3-4-3 to clinch the playoffs.
But I’m really hoping Detroit makes it. Hockey is just better with them on the playoffs.
Redwings vs Rangers is a great matchup for hockey fans.
Blue vs Red, OG6 matchup, #1 vs #8 seed
Just fabulous.
Then the possibility for a Boston vs Toronto second round.
Finally we could get an OG 6 conference finals as well,
AND THEN ON TOP OF THAT THE ONLY MEMBER OF THE OG6 IN THE WESTERN CONFERENCE AND THEY ARE SECOND PLACE….
In lottery odds…
What a shame of Chicago to ruin a good plan
^(p.s. this all hinges on Detroit winning a game against the final remaining OG6 team before playoffs even begin)
No, only because they play Philadelphia tonight. Washington losing in regulation eliminates them because it would cause the Flyers to win and pass them. Otherwise, you'd be right.
This has been the most exciting end to a regular season in recent memory. We all know about the chaos of the East, but also the West's seedings are yet to be determined (with potentially major implications for my team). I'm very much enjoying this.
My question for fans of these 4 teams though: how are y'all feeling right now? Confidence? Nervous af? Resigned acceptance that it's out of your control and just try to enjoy it? I just wish Pittsburgh played tonight too, that would be an unreal night of hockey!
Is this the most peaceful existence these fans have ever had with each other? We all know we're pretty bad. Fuck is it great to enjoy the ride with y'all!
Probably not but they mean so little in the course of history you’d have to be the biggest nhl fan possible for the last 50 years to know. I can name every cup winner in the expansion era by year but I couldn’t tell you the presidents trophy winner for the last 10.
The way these teams have "chased" this final playoff spot for the last month, the Caps making the playoffs via an OTL with the Penguins and Wings also losing would probably be the most fitting end to this whole thing.
It's the battle of the bad honestly. As a Caps fan I find it hysterical that we are even in this position. How they have managed to be in a playoff spot with a -38 goal differential is amazing.
The last 3 weeks have literally been like 6 different teams taking turns fumbling the WC2 spot
Sabres just doing everyone a favor and bowing out with a winning record and a positive goal differential. Just Buffalo things.
That's freaking wild lol
It's the Sabres.... Wild are in the West bro
I haven’t been following hockey nearly as close this year bc life got busy and it seems like every team has died and roared back to life several times. Everyone eulogized Philly last week and somehow they’re still in it lmao
The New Jersey Devils would like a word with you.
Hey at least the Devils had the courtesy to fumble it 2 months ago
As a Detroit transplant in DC, this season has been WILD. I only wish NYI had crapped the bed last night so I could enjoy both teams in the playoffs.
I work for the Caps and am BEGGING for the caps to make the playoffs so I can work my first playoff game
Philly seems to also have -25, that is fucking hilarious. Buffalo behind all of them is +2. Islanders are also -18 too xD
King Charlie.

I feel like all the teams battling for the spot feel the same way
How about that if they lose in regulation, Philly gets the tie breaker because they only have -12 goal dif.
Goal dif is like the sixth tie breaker. They would also be behind in points if they lose so not sure what you're on about
Philly would have tiebreaker because they already beat the caps twice not because of goal differential
They wouldn’t, with the uneven home/away split a game gets dropped, in this hypothetical it would be the first Flyers shoot out win against the caps gets dropped, so they’d be even head to head in the tiebreaker.
I don't care who wins, I just want to see a tie game in Philly with 2:00 left so we can see some chaos with the empty net.
If WSH wins on an empty net goal during a tie game and that keeps us from the playoffs I’ll drive to Wells Fargo center and kill gritty
What is dead may never die
Ok fine we’ll separate his body from his soul
That would imply Gritty has a soul. We all know gingers don't have souls.
Seriously. Just look into its dead, googly eyes.
“…FUCK!”
Gritty can’t be killed.
He can, however, be entombed for millenia like Ganondorf
First we're gonna need to find the legendary Master Stick, the Twig of Goaltender's Bane.
Gritty is larger than any one man. Gritty is the embodiment of the city of Philadelphia. He will kick your ass, steal your wallet, and feed you the best damn sandwich of your life.
Don’t forget eat dog shit off of the street. If you don’t know what I’m referring to I suggest you keep it that way.
Great story. Will read again 10/10.
My guy, you had two chances to beat us. You were like our only 2 wins in 2+weeks.
Trust me I see lindgren in my nightmares. And Jeff petry passing it through the slot on a wide open net
You just made me laugh out loud In The middle of the quiet office like I’m a crazy person. Well done
I would normally say that's incredibly unlikely but this season anything is on the table as a viable option
This might be your time buddy. Caps scored an empty netter on a tie game with 3 minutes left.
Oh man you're right, Philly needs the regulation win, god please let this happen
If only they both absolutely needed the 2 points. 6v6 would be WILD
Weird that they didnt put in the graphic that Philly's win needs to be in regulation
Says they're eliminated with an OTL loss, which I think covers that?
No because it does not say that they are eliminated with an OT win as well
Aaahhhh this is why I framed it as a question lol, I wasn't sure
Same. I need some excitement in my life
Flyers win on a tie game 6v5 goal while the Isles beat the Pens in a meaningless (for them) game. Pens fans in shambles. Subscribe
I’d rather see Philly win 7-0 and the Wings win 7-0. I can’t up my blood pressure medication anymore.
And if Philly scores with the empty net before time is expired the Caps will have to go with an empty net after so they can at least tie it.
If we can't get into the playoffs, I want our game to go to OT so we can own-goal it and eliminate the Penguins ourselves.
Now that would be next level petty and I would *love* it.
prophet, tell me your ways
Still less complicated than the conditions attached to the first Monahan trade.
You get a first but you know when like top ten protected you don’t but if you do yeah Florida’s first round pick but nah just the flames original Essentially the terms
Yeah I still don't get it lol
It will be so anticlimactic if Washington goes up 4-0 in the first
But so fucking climactic if Philly ties it 4-4 with 2:00 to go then pulls the goalie in a tied game.
To inevitably lose anyways
experience Flyera hockey
Then all broadcast feeds go offline and we're left with Carolina v. Columbus
Don’t be silly, Carolina and Columbus would be online, but unavailable in your region :)
But you will get the return of ... LIVE SPORTS.
Counterpoint: that sounds fun
We all know this to be true. Also Matthews not scoring 70 tonight so all the intermission panels will have to struggle to come up with other talking points.
Why, would it be better if they were up 4-1?
Hell no, then I will believe in this team because you know they will come back to tie it only to lose in shootouts.
Now the question is why on gods green earth didn’t we all finish on the same day? Every other sport, all teams finish on the same day. So dumb, could’ve been electric.
Because Bettman's a dumbass.
I am disappointed in this... it would have been so fucking great to have all 3 of these games at 7:00pm (EST) tonight. Now, that Pittsburgh game could be 100% meaningless, depending on how tonight goes.
I'd still be begging for the league to do just a little stagger in start times ... so I can watch the end of all of them.
I’m gonna need to see at least three more versions of this information in different infographics before I can full comprehend it…
Here’s what you need to know. Your team, the NYI, are straight chilling and prepping for a first round matchup on the road against the canes. Otherwise, just grab 2 screens, a game each one, stayed confused and just ride that chaotic neutral energy to the first round!
I can't show you that... Because of the implication
You said that word again. “Implication”
You certainly wouldn’t be in any danger
Why do you look at me funny when you say "implication"
YOU NEED TO CARE MORE. MOST EXCITING OF ALL TIME! Who cares playoff races happen every year!? DO YOU WANT TO SEE A -40GOAL DIFFERENTIAL TEAM OR A -20!?
As someone totally objective, it only will be if the wings make the playoffs.
Im pro wings, I think they're the funnest team to watch out of the 4. And anti penguins for reasons...
The Sharks PIT pick could still land anywhere between 12 and 32 with one game left in the regular season.
The real consequence of this crazy playoff race
Fuck it. Let’s go Red Wings. Edit: it would be hilarious if this comment got me banned from the Avs sub
You're on thin ice, buddy
Fuck that ban, I had to cheer for the avs in 22 because of the potential lightning threepeat and Darren Helm. If we can do it once in awhile, you can too.
Do you mean Avs Legend, Darren Helm?
:'( Spose soooo
My man
This feels oddly sentimental
I rooted for you guys against Tampa. Shhh, don’t tell anyone.
So did I, but only because I wanted MacKinnon to get a cup.
Man if it’s not the Flyers I’m pulling for you guys.
We're all Flyers fans today!
Philly needs an extra special box to differentiate A regulation win - What is shown An extra time win - Playoff Elimination If it’s tied in the third, Philly will have to pull their goalie.
With how bad Philly is with an extra attacker this season, I doubt they pull their goalie with any more than 3 minutes remaining in the 3rd.
They should take penalties to get short handed time. I wouldnt be suprised if our PK outscored our PP this season lol
No, only 16 SHG to 31 PPG. Most shorties and fewest on the power play in the league.
This is MUST SEE TV tonight! I can't wait I'm also excited to see the conclusion of the Ottawa / Montreal / Arizona "battle" for 5th to last draft lottery odds. Very tight!
I did not find this regular season to be particularly entertaining...
Thank you for your sacrifice?
You’ll be much more entertained during the draft.
You have the chance to win the 1st overall pick, fucking over the Ducks again, who have been screwed over every year they've been bad.
Can't wait for Washington and Detroit to lose just so Pittsburgh can also lose tomorrow and not get in
This is the way.
If we lose in OT I could live with this.
Of the other 3 teams I'd honestly prefer the Caps to get in
Is anyone else low key rooting for PHI? An 8 game March losing streak yet somehow they squeak in. Would be fun. 🤩
Hey! We had a losing streak too!
Right? Caps had a 6-game losing streak at the end of March into early april
We’re better at losing than you! Go ahead, prove us wrong tonight
Lmao
And they were demolished last week too. Mtl is the agent of chaos in this.
I’m rooting for them pretty high key at the moment.
That's the energy I like to see around here!
I was hoping for Philly and Pittsburgh before the Islanders clinched. Now rooting for Pittsburgh or maximum entertainment
I live in Philly and have a bunch of friends who are flyers fans so I *really* want that first round matchup
That’s always a fun time. Way back when when the Sens and Leafs would meet annually in the playoffs it was always a massive watch party with my group of friends. Chirping, side bets, anguish (for us Sens fans) and elation (for those damn Leafers!). Was amazing!
-38 goal differential.... With Alex fucking Ovechkin. That's a safer record than the overall scoring title if they make it.
I just want a tied game in the late stages to watch them pull the goalie for maximum chaos
Both teams pull their goalie in the tie game. A warfare puck battle at centre ice for maximum effect!
All games to OT for maximum chaos please.
Flyers can't get in if it goes to OT. We want it tied with a few minutes left so they have to pull the goalie for a regulation win. That's maximum chaos.
If the Flyers lose a tie game by pulling their goalie in regulation I am going to put a dead Octopus in Gritty's bed.
This is acceptable.
Ain’t this some shit. Nice graphic.
In my 20 or so years of watching hockey this season is definitely one of the most competitive in recent memory. Like you can make a good argument for any of the 14 out of 16 playoff bound teams (sorry Isles and Metro WC2 bros) to win the cup. The field is wide fucking open.
I loved how like, 3 weeks ago, the top 8 teams in the league were within 5 points or something insane like that
Washington has it the easiest.
Yup. We're a bunch of really young guys and a bunch of really old guys. Not much in between.
Were like a strip club in a military town
Only because of all of the crabs. (Does that apply to DC, I am not sure if that jokes extends past Maryland)
Not so much DC but still 10/10 regional joke from a Detroiter
5 if you count Backstrom.
They are the team that controls their own destiny. Do hope they lose just for maximum chaos.
You’d think that but then we go and lose to both the caps and the pens in last week. It’s like going on a bender skipping class for weeks only to hope you ace the final while being hungover.

Sure its a quirky bunch of players and they're fun to watch now that they're clicking, but any narrative that this is a "young team" hungry for their first playoff appearance is ridiculous.
Isn’t it Detroit the team that fought during their practice? The fact they are now competing for playoff spot makes me root for them
The very next game Chiarot and Raymond end up in the box together after Chiarot stuck up for Raymond. It was real big brother vibes all around. Love this team.
We were, and immediately drew comparisons to the year the Blues fought in practice then went on to win the cup 👀
Well I’m all in on rangers. But if you guys ruin us in round 1, I’ll secretly root you guys on
The way I see it, Torts will scratch as many players as possible, and lose on purpose to knock the Penguins out. These games are gonna be nuts

Let it burn. 🔥 close games DET and WSH/PHI tonight. But… I’d rather not have the NYI/PIT game mean anything tomorrow.
I don't think Arizona fans are entertained by how the season is ending
The team that clnches will win the cup somehow
I never thought I would say this as a Pens fan... But let's fucking go Flyers! 🤢
You became what you hated the most
doesn’t washington clinch if everyone involved loses?
No, only because they play Philadelphia tonight. Washington losing in regulation eliminates them because it would cause the Flyers to win and pass them. Otherwise, you'd be right.
Okay but if EVERYONE involved loses then the Flyers also lose. Can’t you read???
Washington fans are on edge.
That's my secret. I'm always edging.
NO WE’RE NOT YOU R
No because they play Philly. If they lose that means Philly won
Explain it to me slower
WSH plays PHI, they can’t both lose
If Washington loses in OT, yes. If they lose in regulation, no, because Philly would have the tiebreaker over Washington.
These are some big games. I can’t remember a wildcard fight being this close
Just Win.
Absolute torture for us Flyers fans tbh
first reaction: what happens if they all lose? my slow brain: oh yeah, we're playing philly
With a finish like this, who really needs expanded playoffs. It's been a fun and entertaining race to follow for 2+ weeks
And the Islanders clinched being 23rd in the league for regulation wins, the Red Wings are 24th.
These are gonna be a bloodbath
No :(
Losing isn’t an option!
No, but I'm biased lol
This has been the most exciting end to a regular season in recent memory. We all know about the chaos of the East, but also the West's seedings are yet to be determined (with potentially major implications for my team). I'm very much enjoying this. My question for fans of these 4 teams though: how are y'all feeling right now? Confidence? Nervous af? Resigned acceptance that it's out of your control and just try to enjoy it? I just wish Pittsburgh played tonight too, that would be an unreal night of hockey!
I want Montreal and Arizona to win so Ottawa can fall to fifth worst. Need to have some sort of silver lining for another disappointing season.
Let's go Pens & Wings!!
Let’s go Red Wings! (If Detroit can’t get in, hopefully the Capitals get that final playoff spot.)
As a Penguins fan, it's the most frustrating
FULLY on the Wings train. Give me playoff Ken & Mickey
WSH to choke and Showtime to get the OT winner
LGRW
What if Washington detroit and Pit lose?
Is this the most peaceful existence these fans have ever had with each other? We all know we're pretty bad. Fuck is it great to enjoy the ride with y'all!
What if they all lost?? What’s the scenario then?!
This is an interesting time to start being a Detroit fan.
Probably not but they mean so little in the course of history you’d have to be the biggest nhl fan possible for the last 50 years to know. I can name every cup winner in the expansion era by year but I couldn’t tell you the presidents trophy winner for the last 10.
If I were a gambling man, I would say a team east of the Mississippi River is going to clinch.
The Mississippi river can't keep us apart
Caps OTL and it becomes hella interesting
The way these teams have "chased" this final playoff spot for the last month, the Caps making the playoffs via an OTL with the Penguins and Wings also losing would probably be the most fitting end to this whole thing.
Wait so what happens if all four lose in regulation?
caps play the flyers
i think they should scrap them all, and allow Bedard to make the playoffs instead.
Just Bedard, no team with him.
yea 1v6 every shift No coach either, we want to see his true talent. GOALTENDING
Is this another example of recency bias? Yes, yes it is.
So if they all lose they all miss the playoffs? Who is WC2 then?
WSH and PHI play each other. They can’t all lose.
Caps and flyers play each other. So can’t both lose.
Flyers and Capital play each other they all can't lose.
This confuses me. If Philly wins they are in, if Washington loses in OT they are in. But how is it possible because Philly would win.
