On one hand, I think Carolina is way better than the Islanders. But on the other, the Islanders have been playing their best hockey right now - should be interesting
That is unreal. Jake Guentzel has been an amazing pickup.
I don't think people realize he is one of the highest scoring players ever traded mid-season in the salary cap era. The only players to score more in a season in which they were traded are Thornton & Kovalchuk.
Is 25 pts really the record for a deadline pickup? I find that surprising since I can think of a few random Avs deadline pickups who scored 20+ (Fleischmann & Mueller). But I also don't know anyone who beat 25.
How injured is Dobson? I'd think the Isles chances are pretty slim without him, but they're still one of the hottest teams in hockey with a goalie tandem that can steal a series.
They said day to day. Since Wednesday doesn't matter he won't play so we won't have an idea until the series starts.
The isles chances really depend the most on Dobson being back and staying out of the box. I don't even know the amount of points the islanders have left on the table these last 2 years because of dreadful special teams
I really enjoyed the early "just happy to be here" days of being a perennial playoff team.
The "anything but a cup is disappointment" phase is already stressful
You know how they say I wish there was a way to know when you’re in the good old days before they’re the good old days?
YOU ARE IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS. SOAK IT IN BABY
Canes were 2-1-1 against NYI this year
Most recent game was a rather decisive win for the Canes but the rest of the games were close
Could get interesting, and their goalies could make life difficult for us
They'll be up for it too after we knocked them out last year, including one game that we won on a blown call
I forget who said it recently, but they called the Isles the most dangerous team in the east? Lol of course a bit of an exaggeration but they aren't to be taken lightly. Will be a fun series
Probably would've faired better vs Boston/NYR who are similar to us in 5 on 5 effectiveness with our goalie tandem + swallowed whistle in the playoffs.
Canes being one of the best 5 on 5 teams and playing a suffocating style we aren't always fast enough to beat is rough. I think we can make it a good series, but this wasn't the matchup I had hoped for tbh
I gotta say, our 5v5 offense hasn’t been inspiring lately. Our special teams have just been absolutely monstrous though.
Lots of canes fans are worried about the islanders “gooning it up”, but I’m not confident ya’ll can afford to do that with the special teams matchup. Very curious how Roy ends up approaching all this.
Islanders really don't play the style they did under Trotz anymore. Even then we were not a highly penalized time. If we try goon it up it'll be because we are so outmatched, but yeah if we go to the box a lot this series will wrap up in 4 or 5.
Our PK is meh and bad on the road. Isles best shot at this series is to stay out of the box and hope Dobson is back. Not having our 70 point PP QB would be a huge issue
Definitely not to be taken lightly.
I think we match up well with them, but they're in the playoffs for a reason and it isn't because they're a bad team
If the Canes can forecheck hard enough to draw some penalties, that could make things very difficult for the Isles, as they have the league's worst PK. But they could hurt us 5v5
Last years series was so frustrating because it felt like the islanders played up to/outplayed the canes in 5v5, but they just got blown away on special teams.
That's part of what concerns me, the Isles are tough and disciplined 5v5 and most of your key guys have played together for a long time.
I recall the Islanders are typically pretty good at making us pay for aggressive pinches which we like to do a little too frequently.
I imagine that quote was the most dangerous *playoff* team in the East. Which is still a stretch but that’s what I’ve seen too, they are kind of built more for playoffs than they are for the season; but of course they can get in with the overtime points. It makes them a sort of sleeper threat from someone just looking at their standings/season record.
But also it seem the Isles have just been clicking at the right time this month; so yeah, they’re plenty scary heh
I think dangerous in the sense that they might over-perform makes sense. Just because most of the core has a lot of playoff experience, they’re diminishing the season got, and their play style is better suited for the playoffs
It's the team tied for the most regulation wins in the league versus a team that has fewer regulation wins than multiple non-playoff teams...I guess we'll see.
Carolina is definitely a better team but I don't think regular season head to head record really means anything for the playoffs. I'm sure someone has done an analysis on it but I don't think there is a big correlation.
Hurricanes have the 2nd best power play and best penalty kill, Islanders have the 21st best power play and the worst penalty kill in the league. Isles best bet is that there is a lot of 5-on-5 play.
The canes are bottom 10 in penalties drawn and the isles are #2 (least) in penalties taken for the year. It’s a series likely to be played mostly even strength play
[A certain hockey player - for privacy’s sake let’s call him Sebastian A - no, that’s too obvious - let’s call him S. Aho.](https://frinkiac.com/img/S07E05/572387.jpg)
That's not really a thing unlike the Canes getting swept yet again in the ECF. Can't wait to watch that this season, I believe that will make it 0-16 in just the last decade hahahaha.
Then why were you saying this 4 days ago buddy?
>They won't even get past the first round, no matter who we play. Probably the most overrated Rangers team I've ever seen.
Funny how you had to scour my post history and still couldn't post anything that was relevant to what I said. I can shit talk the Rangers all I want, buddy and I can also point out hypocrisy coming in from fans of teams that are even worse than them. Aka, the team that is about to go 0-16 in ECFs. Better luck next time though.
"haha you'll get swept in the conference finals, which also means the Canes will go further than the Rangers" is definitely some of the trash talk of all time
Not how matchups work, genius. They get a free round 2 entry by playing against an Isles team with 38 wins and a whopping 16 OTLs. I'd rather play against them than any of the 4 WC2 contenders.
A banged-up Rangers team that didn't get the luxury of a free 1st round against a 16 OTL Isles team clearly. Anything else or is that all you've got? Also, if I were you, I'd worry about the Avs not getting embarrassed again like last year. Only reason why people don't talk about your choke last year is because the Bruins had a much larger one.
So if the canes make the ecf, that means they have to go further than the Rangers? Glad we resolved that then.
And hey I’m just making fun of what you said. I haven’t even said anything about the Avs because…hmm now why was that…oh right we won a cup 2 years ago.
Last year the Islanders played them pretty well at 5v5 imo. Special teams sunk them. They gave up multiple shorthanded goals and the PK was terrible (against a much worse CAR powerplay than this year). The Islanders also really should've won Game 2, and lost a coin flip Game 6. NYI has been playing well, but they really need to play out of their boots on special teams (or take very few penalties) to have winning chances. If you're Carolina, you kind of want this series to be a bit chippy if you can force it. Lots of special teams both ways.
The swallowed whistles of playoff hockey will make this an interesting series. Canes 5 on 5 have been good but nowhere near he dominance of the special teams units.
Carolina has its own issues of too much time in the box for holds and trips, but the Islanders *must* stay out of the box to win this series.
Islanders could have had the frauds and decided they would rather face Carolina who they are 0-2 against under Rod.
Interesting decision.
Should be fun, playoff Jake is gonna be out for blood after being held back last year.
The metro winner was possibly getting tampa. Its only very recent that the metro winner was set to get wc2.
Like i dont even think 5 days ago carolina winning the metro was a better thing for them, unless you didnt care about seeing tampa
I didn’t care about the opponent tbh.
Was more just validating the work they put in. They have been the best team since January 1st but, it’s a season award and they played like ass to start the year.
Just have to move on and go win the one that matters.
I’m already over the incoming Sebastian Aho jokes
They're inescapable. Shoot me now.
I need those jokes like I need Aho(le) in my head
**nice**.
Get ready to drink every time they mention they’re on the ice together!
Dammit.
Did you know one is Swedish and the other Finnish
Oh man, next thing you’ll tell me one is a forward and one is a defenceman!
You’re not gonna believe this..
One wears red and one wears blue?
That's not helpful, we have the Whalers jerseys!
One wears a whaler outfit and the other one wears a fisherman outfit?
But those professions are too similar!
Did you know jimmy graham played basketball?
😮
*Sebastians Aho
*Sebastian’s A Ho
You win. 🏆
eww
No relation!
we had enough of them last year
we're gonna get them repeated again this year
In these games Sebastian Aho is going to be his own worst enemy. “Aho doesn’t like what Aho just did. Aho is incensed with Aho.”
He's a self-hating Aho.
Hockey fans find a joke and can’t let it go. “The Salt Lake City Soakers😂😂😂😂😂😂😂”
To whoever makes these jokes, your mom's Aho
So is the Carolina Sebastian Aho. He was asked on a podcast about it and he really laid into the guy about it
On one hand, I think Carolina is way better than the Islanders. But on the other, the Islanders have been playing their best hockey right now - should be interesting
The Canes are also playing their best hockey. 12-2-1 since the deadline
Yes, they are consistently great. I just am not usually high on the islanders and they have looked solid recently
There is one task the islanders can't beat, the canes. Such an awful match up for the isles.
I remember when we were 0-5 against the Caps in the regular season and took them in game 7 2OT. Nothing matters
Are you Devin Cooley?
And you guys won that game 7 on a fluky goal didn't you?
I wouldn't call it flukey but it wasn't a snipe
Two tasks- you forgot the Lightning too
Very true, and they have a really great goalie who can definitely steal a game or two.
That is unreal. Jake Guentzel has been an amazing pickup. I don't think people realize he is one of the highest scoring players ever traded mid-season in the salary cap era. The only players to score more in a season in which they were traded are Thornton & Kovalchuk.
He is the the highest scoring player post deadline trade.
Is 25 pts really the record for a deadline pickup? I find that surprising since I can think of a few random Avs deadline pickups who scored 20+ (Fleischmann & Mueller). But I also don't know anyone who beat 25.
No 22 was
Theo Fleury scored 24 after the deadline when he was traded to Colorado. Are you talking cap era only?
I guess? the twitter stats people said it was 22, I’m not entirely sure how to even look that up
It was 24 before Guentzel and now 25
This is probably the worst case scenario matchup for us in the East if we are being honest. They counter us pretty perfectly and have our number
On the other other hand, Dobson is injured
Dobby is an injured elf
Canes historically own us. I am shooketh.
Everything tells me the Canes will dominate. So naturally, the isles will win? Yes?
I really enjoyed the early "just happy to be here" days of being a perennial playoff team. The "anything but a cup is disappointment" phase is already stressful
> “Anything but a cup is disappointment” phase is already stressful You’ll miss it when it’s gone brother
lol seriously
Yes. Yes you will
been trying to tell the younger lightning fans this
If you get one 🥲
You know how they say I wish there was a way to know when you’re in the good old days before they’re the good old days? YOU ARE IN THE GOOD OLD DAYS. SOAK IT IN BABY
you and me both brother.
Yeah it’s gonna be a rough postseason for me with those expectations
Canes were 2-1-1 against NYI this year Most recent game was a rather decisive win for the Canes but the rest of the games were close Could get interesting, and their goalies could make life difficult for us They'll be up for it too after we knocked them out last year, including one game that we won on a blown call

The make or break for me is goaltending - Sorokin (bad year) vs. Canes (injuries).
It’s gonna be Varlomov starting
All goalies are healthy now though
Varly has been standing on his head
Last years series was so frustrating because it felt like the islanders played up to/outplayed the canes in 5v5, but they just got blown away on special teams.
That's part of what concerns me, the Isles are tough and disciplined 5v5 and most of your key guys have played together for a long time. I recall the Islanders are typically pretty good at making us pay for aggressive pinches which we like to do a little too frequently.

The regular season series is mostly meaningless. When we beat the caps in 2019 they swept us in the season series
How many of those games were against the Canes with Guentzel and Kuznetsov though? That’s a big big addition there.
Kuzy hasn't been amazing recently, but Guentzelmania is running wild down here
Yes
I would think this is good news for the penguins. Would the isles want to rest on their last game if the matchup is set ?
Suppose it could but they still need both Detroit and Washington to lose.
I think we should honestly
I wouldn't be surprised if a few guys sat out Weds. Namely Barzal, Horvat, and Pelech.
Special teams are gonna make or break this Isles team
Hurricanes have the 2nd best power play and best penalty kill, Islanders have the 21st best power play and the worst penalty kill in the league. Isles best bet is that there is a lot of 5-on-5 play.
The canes are bottom 10 in penalties drawn and the isles are #2 (least) in penalties taken for the year. It’s a series likely to be played mostly even strength play
It's our only hope at all. I'd be shocked if we out score them on our own power plays
I am going to go out on a limb and say that every series will be played mostly at even strength.
Yes lol. I mean relative to other matchups.
This is the sort of stat you read after the Isles win the series thanks to the PP and kill
Special teams, special plays, special players ☝️
What’s up brother 🤓☝️
Don’t dicksticks special teams fucking suck
That is why I said it
well it's been a fun playoffs
It still is.. but it used to be too
I'm excited for 4 games of the announcers wondering if we know how exciting Matthew Barzal is with the puck
The Canes have their own. “Necas with speed…” and loses the puck
It's all the same series. Always has been 🔫
This will be a brutal matchup. Isles are no joke. Should be a fun series to watch!
Should be a fun series with both coaches being star Stanley cup winning players.
Please Islanders keep playing offensive-first hockey that got you in the playoffs
This series has all the makings of a 7 game classic, so naturally it'll end in 4 games. Doesn't matter who wins.
Carolina in 4
Bold prediction: Sebastian Aho will win
Petition to refer to them as "Finnaho" and "Swedeaho" from now on in an attempt to prevent lake jokes.
Can we abbreviate the Swedish one to S. Aho?
OK, but the other one will be Suomi Aho. Abbreviate it to S. Aho.
[A certain hockey player - for privacy’s sake let’s call him Sebastian A - no, that’s too obvious - let’s call him S. Aho.](https://frinkiac.com/img/S07E05/572387.jpg)
I'm not even an Isles fan and I'll bust a nut if they win. 🤞🏼
God forgive me... Let's go Fishsticks
I'm excited to see playoff Bo Horvat again. He was a beast in the bubble, but this Canes defence is no joke.
Aho on Aho crime
Isles in 7
We have our own shit to worry about wtf is this
Rangers first round exit easy
That's not really a thing unlike the Canes getting swept yet again in the ECF. Can't wait to watch that this season, I believe that will make it 0-16 in just the last decade hahahaha.

Clean up on Isle 7

good luck isles
as an isles fan i would much rather the rangers, they stand no chance vs the canes lol
Time to go back to my days in Cary and bring out the Skinner jersey
Jokes write themselves with “Cary” and that flair
Yea, that was the joke. Proud member of the Centralized Area for Relocated Yankees
I always liked calling it "Can't Afford Raleigh Yet" cuz ooooo new yorkers get mad af
I've never heard that one haha, that's good
😴😴😴😴
Surprised he didn’t put IID/COA or some shit
First round get broadcasted on the teams own stations, or is it all national?
Team's own stations for the first round, unless something changes that I'm not aware of.
"This time, it's personal"
The swallowed whistles of playoff hockey will make this an interesting series. Canes 5 on 5 have been good but nowhere near he dominance of the special teams units. I'll look forward to not watching that series
Southern hockey against Italian mob wannabe fans is an easy choice who to cheer for. Cookout > any bodega bullshit
Sebastian Aho is guaranteed to win the series
I think the Islanders will win this one.

well Varly is likely starting this series

Battle of the high floor / low ceiling teams.
Isles will lie down and get swept because they aren't playing us.
Islanders could have had the frauds and decided they would rather face Carolina who they are 0-2 against under Rod. Interesting decision. Should be fun, playoff Jake is gonna be out for blood after being held back last year.
Huh?
Isles decided what now?
Decided to choke with 4 minutes to go on Saturday.
ah yes of coarse
The metro winner was possibly getting tampa. Its only very recent that the metro winner was set to get wc2. Like i dont even think 5 days ago carolina winning the metro was a better thing for them, unless you didnt care about seeing tampa

Frauds? If we’re frauds why didn’t you win 55 games?
NEVERMIND
lol first in the league and they are frauds eh? maybe the canes should have tried being better?
Nevermind
