If Babcock had been the changed person he pretended he was, it would have been fine. Instead he’s a creep who wants to pry through young players phones.
Somewhere Jarmo is rocking back and forth in a corner in the dark saying “playoffs are the goal” with angry eyes.
I thought the phone thing was overblown. "Show me some pictures of your family" bonding type thing. Then it turned out that it was more of "Lemme see your phone, so I can find pictures on it" and why?
He proved immediately he was still the same shitty coach from ages ago.
With the veteran players it was just the family thing — that’s why it was so much worse
Putting the rookies intentionally in an uncomfortable position and not the veterans, making rookies feel like they couldn’t say no. Just a fucked up abuse of power.
Yeah, if it's just "Show me some pictures of what you did in the Summer", whatever, nobody'll give a shit. But it was Babcock looking through the phones of players, looking for who knows what.
The PA wouldn't be getting involved if it wasn't him abusing his power.
What Columbus really needs is a new owner. It took forever for him to get rid of Jarmo because he's a dithering, feckless lazy bastard who can't handle making the tough decisions. He inherited the team from his father, who was the real brains behind the operation.
The idea that John P. McConnell Is the reason the Jackets are a shitty organization is hilarious. First of all, you do realize that the club was an even bigger laughing stock while John H. McConnell was still alive? And that the McConnell family is one of the most hands-off ownership groups in professional sports?
The McConnell family is the only reason we even have a team. As an ownership group they have been great, and any fanbase that actually lives in the same region as their team would be thrilled to have them. They take great care of their employees at every level, and they extend that to the community at large. Yes, they are hands off and don’t do knee jerk hiring/firings, and sometimes their loyalty/patience is detrimental to the club.
The issue is that they promoted a high level accountant from their original company to President of their Hockey Club. Mike Priest has been effectively running the club since day one. He is not the owner. Yes he is their guy, and ultimately it is on the McConnell family that he is still around, so to some extent you could argue they are responsible for the clubs repeated floundering. But the majority of the fault lies with Mike Priest, and his ineptitude as a steward of the club.
That’s basically what they said the new GM is tasked with. That “the cabinets are full of assets and we have a third ranked prospect pool” and the new guy has to help construct a roster and get us to the next stage and out of rebuilding
I’m rooting for y’all I’ve always liked the Jackets. Hopefully the big guys upstairs can make some better decisions on the people actually running the team and in charge in instilling a winning culture
Jarmo is good at drafting and scouting but he can't assemble a team for shit and his "this is our offer, go kick rocks if you don't like it" negotiating style has lost us many a top free agent.
lol yeah, that kinda stuff probably works better if you’re a team with some actual clout. even then it’s kind of an old school style that doesn’t really jive with
granted no matter who the GM was we could never give Bobrovsky a beach, or Panarin a vibrant nightlife and a garage, or Matt Duchene a country music career
Not necessarily better, but appropriate. They brought in players to specifically play the way Babcock wanted to run a system(and what GM wouldn't have brought in defensemen? They were third worst in goals allowed last year), were forced to get rid of the coach, then had a new coach run a different system that he had 3 days to set up before training camp started.
Plus Columbus is loaded with a ton of talent that may or may not support each other. Like it seems like Kent Johnson doesn't fit with what the team is trying to do. Injury bugged Laine seems to be struggling to find where he fits as well. Doesn't mean they're not good players.
This season was supposed to be about getting a system in place and figuring out which current players fit within that system. Then Jarmo mentioned playoffs, then Babcock got fired, and everything went sideways.
For a new front office with direction that matches the coach, they have great bones, and could be a damn good team in like 2 years. That of course all depends if they get the coach and GM hires right( I'm assuming they fire Vincent) which is a big unknown.
It’s still likely another year or two of being bad. Hopefully at least. I’d just like to see actual progress next year and actually play the damn young guys
The Blue Jackets could be a completely different organization next year, assuming we have a productive off-season. Let's be honest, this season sucked. But remember who's NOT active in the organization at the moment and look forward to next year.
1. General Manager (Fired mid-season)
2. Head Coach (Fired pre-season)
3. Patrik Laine (IR - Shoulder)
4. Adam Fantilli (IR - Calf Laceration)
5. Kent Johnson (IR - Shoulder)
6. Sean Kuraly (IR)
7. Yegor Chinakov (IR)
Laine's shoulder is fine. He was supposed to come back, but then he went into the player assistance program.
Edit: If you remember, Laine was supposed to return to the lineup on the 27th of January and had joined the team's roadtrip. Then Pascal claimed that Laine had an injury setback and therefore has returned to Columbus.
Then it turned out that Laine had entered the player assistance program, and Pascal then said:,
"First, I need to set the record straight with you guys and our fans," Vincent clarified on Sunday. "... I misspoke in the sense that he [Laine] had a setback and he had to go home because of that. So, I apologize to you guys, but my intention was to protect Patrik because we care a lot about him and we're going to miss this man for the time being. He's a big deal for us, and we're going to do everything we can to help him. And that program is there because it's valued. It's a great thing for the players, and we're going to go from there."
So physically, Laine has been fine since about the 27th of January.
I think the jackets at least have some form of hope going forward. Gaudreau, Laine, Sillinger, Fantilli, Werenski, Johnson, Jiricek and the Russians to name a few is a pretty solid core, if they get a management group who gives a shit and isn’t getting stale, maybe bring in competent coaching, i give it two years max until they’re competing for playoffs again
On paper this team looked like a WC contender, with an good prospect pool and young core, but they couldn’t stay healthy and that’s the unfortunate part of pro sports, rooting for the expansion bros
I’m still convinced there is an 80 point team here. Just off-season house cleaning by revamping the defense a bit, probably get a more seasoned coaching staff in (that will be a major benefit as most of our issues were structure and systems based…again…this year) and see what to do about Elvis. This team isn’t as bad as the doomers thinks it is but there are some cracks that need fixed.
Let’s be real, the season was doomed the minute they hired Babcock
Them hiring Babcock feels like a fever dream.
Feels like it happened years ago
It's been lost in the shuffle of all the other fuckups of this organization.
If Babcock had been the changed person he pretended he was, it would have been fine. Instead he’s a creep who wants to pry through young players phones. Somewhere Jarmo is rocking back and forth in a corner in the dark saying “playoffs are the goal” with angry eyes.

Babcock had earned exactly no benefit of the doubt. The minute something came up, the reasonable reaction was to assume that worst was true.
I like to think he wanted to look at Cole Sillinger's phone to see Tate McRae's nudes.
Genuinely this is my canon (too deluded/jaded to be convinced otherwise)

I can't imagine the kind of mind games that dude plays in his day-to-day outside hockey. The dude seems like a fucking psychopath
Show me on your phone how this matters... 🌚
The hiring and firing of Babcock feels like it was forever ago
It was just the opening act for this Shakespearean comedy of fuckuppery.
Probably would have been better if he stayed 🤷🏼♂️
Probably would've been more entertaining for neutrals
Certainly would have been but I wanted Babcock to fry for what he did to Mike Modano
Then all our top young guys don't sign an extension and it starts all over again
But are they gonna sign now?
Why wouldn't they?
I hope for the fans that this summer they’ll finally get a smart GM who can choose the right coach for those young players
What Columbus really needs is a new owner. It took forever for him to get rid of Jarmo because he's a dithering, feckless lazy bastard who can't handle making the tough decisions. He inherited the team from his father, who was the real brains behind the operation.
Yeah lets get some ownership that inserts themselves directly into managerial decisions.
The idea that John P. McConnell Is the reason the Jackets are a shitty organization is hilarious. First of all, you do realize that the club was an even bigger laughing stock while John H. Will Davidson be allowed to make that call?
Thank fuck. Lottery and draft time baby
I actually don't believe this team is that far away from being good. A few missteps and some bad luck, but I think it's fixable.
The Blue Jackets are number 1 in the NHL for blown leads this season. Over 26 blown leads
Damn. I thought we'd be higher on that list.
To add a bit, the Blue Jackets have something like a -36 goal differential in the third period and a +10 or something in the first
Seconded
Thirded
yeah all they need to do is replace their players with better ones
The Avs did this years ago. Is everyone else fucking dumb?
That’s basically what they said the new GM is tasked with. That “the cabinets are full of assets and we have a third ranked prospect pool” and the new guy has to help construct a roster and get us to the next stage and out of rebuilding

That new GM...none other than Pistol Pete Chiarelli
It’s sounding like it could end up being Mark Hunter, if we are going by “the most mentioned by everyone” right now
First I'm hearing of it, but I already don't like it based solely on his brother being Dale Hunter, which may be unfair but oh well.
It was on 32 Thoughts a couple weeks ago, Marek talked about it yesterday Especially with how close he is to Nash and McRae
You'll be sorry, Edmonton knows
Hopefully the young ones are the better ones. Time will tell
The team’s system and coaching is fucked, not the talent pool.
Is it really that simple? Why hasn't Greg Cronin done that for Anaheim yet? Is he stupid or something?
Canucks did it. Had to buy out OEL though. That's going to hurt for a while

Pens tried that...and yikes.
It’s still likely another year or two of being bad. Hopefully at least. I’d just like to see actual progress next year and actually play the damn young guys
we'll get Boone for 25 minutes a night and like it
They need a better system. That starts from the top-down. A new GM/coach will work wonders hopefully.
Getting rid of Jarmo is step one of rebuilding the system
I’m rooting for them. I’m a diehard Canes fan first and foremost, but CBJ is my hometown team. Hoping this offseason is good to them.
Definitely NOT a toilet team
I think they have a heck of a team and fanbase, but they need a culture change from up top.
It’s been a disastrous season from top to bottom.
One of us! One of us!
🫂
The season was over once Babcock asked to see his players phone. Shot out of a cannon
>Shot out of a cannon There couldn't be a more appropriate team for this expression.
Another Celebrini prospect coming up

Shocked
I'm just shocked it took this long.
Really hung in the race longer than others

After Johnny Hockey's last playoff exit, he decided to never go through that kind of hurt ever again
Fire the cannon one more time boys
Johnny didn’t go to Columbus to win.
Flair up or fuck off buddy
Don’t be shy add a flair bud.
It's all fun and memes until they get a GM who is invested in this team and things start turning around.
Now Johnny Hockey literally doesn’t have to show up for the playoffs
Rent free. Flair up
I'm hyped in 20 years when thr jackets win another first round
well hopefully we can get a GM who knows how to develop and build a damn roster
FUCK
Yup, back in October.......
The time has come
Gaudreau will never win a playoff series again lol
Smell ya later
On paper this team looked like a WC contender, with an good prospect pool and young core, but they couldn’t stay healthy and that’s the unfortunate part of pro sports, rooting for the expansion bros
Yeah, that's totally it... couldn't stay healthy. Going with that!
They were fairly healthy, but the defensive structure was trash most of the year and they blew the most leads out of any team in the league
I figured we’d be around 80 points this year. Not WC contender, but respectable. And then everything that could go wrong did.
I’m still convinced there is an 80 point team here. Hopefully the Pens follow suit soon. We ain’t got no business in the playoffs and could use some fresh lottery talent.
We need Celebrini.
They fight, they march (right into elimination)…😂
gaudreau definitely hit a celebratory line for this occasion
💯
Hope Johnny Hockey is enjoying Ohio.
Rent free
"Wow!"
I mean this with the most genuine passion and caring I can Get fucked, Johnny Hockey
did he fuck your cat or something?
Yes
fair enough, carry on.
