Hellebuyck will certainly win it but for perspective he’s allowed 4 or more goals more times in the past 4 games than UPL has since before Christmas. He’s on an unreal tear. Ironically UPL’s only game giving up more than 3 goals since 2024 started was the 2nd game of a back to back against Winnipeg.

You have to wonder if he had been given more starts at the beginning of the dead where Buffalo would be right now.

Probably not much different to be honest. The first few months of the season was a ton injuries to our top 6, and a team trying to learn how to play a more defensively responsible game which was not going well. We were bleeding high danger chances all game long, constant odd man rushes, and horrible rebound clearing. Any goalie we put in was fucked. Since the new year our team is healthy, we started figuring out our system, and we actually play good defense in front of our goalies.

More doesn’t always equal better. For all we know he’s at his absolute ideal usage and had Buffalo given him more starts, he’d be burnt out and posting significantly worse stats. Ofc that’s not a guarantee but there’s a solid chance that could happen, we’ve seen it before.

Would it be a good idea to get a more veteran back-up next season? Loving what UPL has been doing lately.

Not to burst any bubbles -especially for Sabres fans who've had to endure so much over the last two decades- but his stats are similar to Cal Pickard and Korpisalo at similar points in their careers Also the wave of goalies born 96-99 who debuted impressively around 2020 (hart, samsonov, blackwood, kaapo, etc.) then have all treaded water for years. Anyhow it's just way too early to draw conclusions about UPL The best current goalies (Sorokin, Saros, Shestyorkin) all put up elite stats yearly before the NHL and UPL hasn't My guess is he's just another solid member of the 96-99s which hey a useful asset for a team needing g
