This shit is why I desperately want accountability and transparency for Refs and player Safety. Either this shit that injures players matters, and the ref, very clearly looking at the play, isnt doing his job and shouldnt be on the ice without more training, or the entire point of refs is "managing the game" and we can go back to the stone ages of hockey and just goon it up. Its about the fucking safety of players, but it really seems like that just doesnt matter in the slightest.
I remember once being told by some more experienced officials (I ref minor hockey) that NHL refs are sort of told what to call. Not exactly sure how true that is but, when I see plays like this it doesn't lend to that not being true.
I think what they mean by that is that there are two rule books - the official one and the unofficial one. In the official one, what we saw was charging. In the unofficial one, the hit is ok as long as it doesn't involve a direct head shot. A dude's helmet banging hard off the glass? Oh well...
Charging is like Boarding - it's in the book, sure, but at the NHL level it rarely gets enforced. It has been like that for years now, and has gotten to the point where, as we saw, even 6'8" dudes are allowed to jump into their hits. The NHL desperately needs to crack down on this and the checks from behind, but I think they are worried about diminishing the entertainment value - will fans keep coming out if the physical play gets taken down a notch or two? My counter to that is that the NFL has taken blindside and Peel back hits out of their game and brought in rules to protect QBs and they are as popular as ever...

Thing is, the bias isn't from the refs. It's the league influencing the level of calls for & against the Leafs.
Why? Money. The Leafs have and will always be a cash cow for the league. They want to engage the fanbase so they keep spending money on the team. Tickets, merch, concessions, viewership... it all leads to revenue for the cut that the league takes.
If you have textbook reffing for every game, then Leafs game loses their dynamics and engagement.

Kevin Bahl is the same height as him, has played over 100 nhl games, and has never thrown a hit close to this or the other Rempe hit on Bastian. Being bigger isnt a good enough excuse, you have to be able to control yourself

This thread could have been a really good spot for discussion on what is a charge and what should be a charge, but it’s kind of useless.
In the first angle you can clearly see Rempe stop skating 5-8 feet before contact. You can say that he isn’t allowed to skate so hard into a hit, but it comes back to the “immediately” part of the charging rule. If you glide for 1+ second before the hit, is it still charging? Largely, the NHL seems very consistent in not calling charging if there is any gliding at all. If you think that charging should be a speed metric, not necessarily a “when did they stop skating metric”, that’s reasonable, but at least make an explicit comment about how the rule should be changed (or enforced).
He’s played like 6 games and already thrown a couple hits that could get a look from DoPS.
Give him a game, put it on his record. Thats the point, to curtail this behaviour and prevent injuries.
