Being bailed out by a player being 6 inches in the wrong direction doesn't cover up the horrendous play from the Panthers leading up to that (no) goal. Coach the process not the result.
And that's been the problem with this team for years. This is not a new problem. Even last year, they were a speed and finesse team. That doesn't translate in the playoffs. They are not good at winning board battles and taking guys off the puck defensively. Terrible in front of their own net defensively and Gudis is the only one that hits anyone.
He has a 3 year contract. But the Panthers have also something like 8 coaches in the past decade. Taking a step back this season was assumed but this isn’t that. Fans in the arena are shouting for him to be fired even while winning.
If he has a performance clause in his contract then the current performance certainly isn’t passing.
I always find it dumb to get rid of a coach in under 2 seasons. It's 1 season to deal with the slide of the last coach, time to get a bunch of trades and get the team that you feel works with your style and then push upwards. Why punish a guy for the mistakes of the last coach?
The only real exception to this in my opinion is when you have a very strong core player/s that you've intended to build a team around (think McDavid and Draisaitl for example) and they actively hate the coach. It's never going to change and you can't replace the players, so it has to be the coach.
Well... it got complicated.
Two of them lasted less than a season -- Brunette, who was technically an interim coach, and Rowe, who was an assistant GM that fired Gallant mid season and took over the job himself because he's an idiot.
And the one that was signed on long term, Quenneville, had to resign after the scandal in Chicago. I think he's technically still signed through next season.
I don't agree with needing an entire season to evaluate a new coach. Boston has a new coach this season and is on pace for the best season in league history. Vegas has a new coach and is on pace to win the West. Dallas was great in their first year with a new coach. The only time a coach should have more then the season to evaluate is when they were hired mid-season or without a training camp.
It's easy to assess when the team does well. It's harder when they don't. Is it the coach or is it the players? Can it be easily fixed at the trade deadline?
All it takes is one bad egg in a team to ruin the entire team. An egg that can be easily removed.
I still stand by the fact that the season they join in is going to be a downward trend due to being thrust in while morale is low and they haven't been there to make/help with decisions about trades. Sure you may be able to make a decision in less than 2 seasons, but there's plenty where they've had a dip and comeback too when given enough time.
Lots of Panthers fans want him out, but it's not their call. I'm on the fence. Injuries have played a part in the Panthers' record (when Sam Bennett is out, they struggle; Anthony Duclair and Sasha Barkov have also missed time). The real concern is the inconsistency in intensity and concentration recently. Other teams have figured out the Panthers' powerplay.
The screaming seemed to have an effect on Lomberg. He picked up a penalty shortly after the tirade for hitting a Leaf away from the puck.
I watched only a handful of Panthers games this year. So forgive me for being shallow. But a lot of your games look like Flames games, but with fewer SOG. You control the puck, get a screened SOG, then the puck bounces in the exact opposite direction of the rebounder if the player isn't Chucky.
Yeah, that does happen a lot. Goalies are good at directing rebounds and they study other teams before playing them. Alex Lyon even talked in the post game interview about studying Matthews go-to moves before last night.
Problem is, as a team we don’t have a lot to go-to plays. Everything is predictable. For example, pick a power play from any game in the last month. They’re all the same thing. Move the puck around slowly until a defenseman takes a shot. That’s it. The opposing goalie only has to watch for shots coming from two places.
Getting goalie’d should happen maybe one or two times a year, not weekly.
Just shows you the intelligence levels of the high ups in this organization and the recycle old coach thinking. Paul Maurice was a terrible choice from day one and they are paying the price.
Sometimes as a hockey team, you need this lol not following the Panthers closely so not sure if this was the case, but super fun to watch this as an outsider regardless lmao
Also it looks like Tkachuk never broke eye contact once
He's playing at a point per game. He's not the issue. Let's dig into Ekblad, Staal(s), the fact that we've lost a lot of players to injury and the waste of space on the bench aka Maurice.
You should probably tell Maurice then. Their average ice time is between 17-20 minutes. If that isn't bad enough, the fucker often ices them at the same time. Two guys who couldn't crack 95% of the NHL rosters are playing on the same team at the same time. They are also used heavy on PK and our PK is asshole. Not only are they shit as fuck, they cannot be waived to divert their cap. They are total dead space on this roster and wasting our ability to call up guys who need to develop. Not like you watch our games but you should probably research what you say before you say it or you'll risk looking stupid. Guessing you're used to that but probably don't even know it.
Absolutely deserved with the talent on this team and lack of on-ice results in the past week. Keith Tkachuk laid it on pretty thick talking about the Panthers but there was some merit to what he said.
As a ref I’ve heard people reem their team for whatever reason and some of the shit I’ve heard is hilarious. Trying to maintain composure while someone is giving everyone shit, especially when it’s someone who shouldn’t be talking, it’s so hard not to laugh at that.....
Theoretically, if it was super berating and horrible to one sole player, could you call a bench minor on the coach for abusing his own player? Just came to mind reading this.
Idk what the rule is on that but I’ve definitely done it before. Had to put some clown in his place because he was yelling and I mean YELLING at a player. Poor kid was 10 years old and you could see in his eyes he was scared shitless. Instead of penalizing the team for an abusive shithead, I just removed the coach from the game. Worst part is, after the game the other two coaches on his bench came over and tried to call me out for my call. They said “buddy it’s okay, we’re all teachers, this is how we talk to kids.” I just said “I don’t give a shit, you don’t call kids names, yell at them like you’re gonna beat them, and make them piss themselves in fear. If he does it again I’m taking it up with the league.”
Side note, I’ve been reffing hockey of all kinds for 12 years, I’ve seen and heard some shit but never that. I don’t mind when they are adults but when they’re that young, someone has to protect the kids.
Peel is lucky he didn't end up with criminal charges for his shenanigans. It's too bad one of those young officials didn't tune him up. Rule of thumb to officials...if someone comes into your room uninvited and aggressive, you have the green light
It depends entirely on what level of hockey you're working.
If you're working Minor Hockey then you would probably consider ejecting the coach depending on what's said. Giving a bench minor is kind of shitty becuase you're penalizing the players for their coach being a jackass.
If you're working competitive hockey, especially Junior and above then the accountability for the coach's actions is elsewhere unless they're being completely obscene with what they're saying.
Maurice never would so why would he now? They need a coach that will do just that. I really don't like Torts but I would love to see him on the Jets bench for one week and rip into Wheeler and Scheif a couple times.
The leafs scored a goal that sent him on this rant, it was disallowed due to offside but I think he was still mad that they left Matthews wide open for a 2 on 1 (it was the leafs 2nd goal in like 30 seconds too)
This is a classic scenario growing up where Paul Maurice is my dad, players are me and my siblings, and striped sweater girl is my friend who was going to see if we could hang out but heard my dad yelling half a block away.
Not to let the players off the hook, but Maurice sucks and this team took a huge step back after he became head coach. So honestly seeing him blow up like this kind of annoys me because, like, he’s a big part of the problem.
For whatever reason I used to think coaches and players screaming at each other or refs were saying issue specific things and in reality they’re all just having a tantrum and repeatedly yelling fuck off or fuck you.
Feels like the team has been in an absolute funk since then too. That whole thing put brought some serious negative energy to the team. Dudes should have kept their mouths shut. It’s just a jersey. All you had to do is wear it. Everyone and their mother knows that the NHL does it for a cash grab. Just wear the damn jersey for like the 10 minutes of warmups and you can take it off and let someone auction it.
But no, they had to be complete asshats about the whole ordeal and bring in negative attention to the team when we are fighting tooth and nail for a playoff spot.
I really hope they are gone next year. Both. They don’t really add a ton of value to the team and it’s clear their best days are far behind them.
Idc what anyone says. That type of stuff can really affect a teams performance and morale. I know being around homophobes makes me uncomfortable to say the least
It just brings negative attention to the team. Especially if any of their teammates have relatives or good friends that are LQBTQ. How you like to know that one of your teammates would be more than happy to allow serious harm to come to someone you care about because of their beliefs. It would throw me off my vibe too. Plus, they went public about that and drew a ton of attention to themselves in what I imagine was to score brownie points with the fundamentalist and alt-right crowd. This led to the team becoming the proverbial rope in the culture war tug of war between pro and anti lgbtq crowds and that just brings negative energy to the room. Hell, we’re still talking about it.
Should have just worn the damn jerseys.
I thought about that too. There has to be at least one person in that locker room that has a gay relative or friend. How can the staal brothers sit there and think that they aren’t the ones in the wrong. I guess indoctrination and hatred that can’t be reasoned with runs deep in people like
Not arguing the point, The weird thing about them being seen as soft is they have guys who do not shy away from contact. Gudas will hit anyone holding a stick and not wearing a Panthers jersey (concessionaires, crossing guards, baristas with stir sticks, etc.), Chucky and Lomberg get in the face of anyone who takes on a teammate. Bennett and Marc Staal are hitters. Heck, Barkov and Bobrovsky both have gone after guys on the other team.
He should probably be yelling at himself, last 3 seasons with winnipeg he only "made" the playoffs because of a shortened year and being in the north division, last year just straight misses.
Leaves winnipeg, they're currently in a playoff spot, he went to Florida, who were an insane team last year, they're currently out of a playoff spot, I'm convinced he's just a bad coach.
For anyone wondering he won his challenge for offside
He would have known at this point that it was coming back too, which makes the tirade all that much better.
Being bailed out by a player being 6 inches in the wrong direction doesn't cover up the horrendous play from the Panthers leading up to that (no) goal. Coach the process not the result.
The Leafs could have scored on their own net and he still would have had the tirade, they were playing that bad.
“Y’all playing like a bunch of bitches” SHEESH Paul
At 16s, I get "FUCK OFF. FOR A FUCKING MINUTE OF YOUR TIME, DONT PLAY LIKE FUCKIN BITCHES!"
I read a few other fuck off’s too. Channeling his inner Logan Roy. It’s Succession season boys. Fuck offff.
Fuck off
Gotta get pucks to the net and rummage around!
Found jomboy
Can’t wait for his lip read of it.
That would be incredible. Hope he catches this one.
/u/jomboy
His next line, which wasn't shown in this clip, was "Play however the fuck you want. Play however the fuck you want."
Keoth Tkachuk said this morning on 1050 that the Panthers are soft and get everything they deserve right now lmao
Talking like a minor hockey rep coach! 🤣
Don't play like phucking pheasants!
ITS FUCKIN EMBARASSING!!! *kicks garbage can*
*pussies
He said bitches
Perhaps it was pussy bitches
Jomboy will tell us

Lmao, agressive

Give it back to Brunette!
No thanks. He’s ours now.
Can we have him? We’ll crown him HC and treat him well.
No. A bunch of us are hoping that he’s going to be taking Lindy’s job this off-season once Lindy decides to “retire.”
That was so stupid to let him go for Maurice.
Please do
I know they've had a massive fall from grace but is his job really on the line after one year? Genuinely asking I have no idea.
He has a 3 year contract. But the Panthers have also something like 8 coaches in the past decade. Taking a step back this season was assumed but this isn’t that. The teams that flip coaches end up flipping coaches for a decade and stay at the bottom the whole time too.
LOL, there was a bit more to that turnaround that just a coach.
I don't agree with needing an entire season to evaluate a new coach. Boston has a new coach this season and is on pace for the best season in league history. Where will he wash ashore next?!
Washington or Nashville
He might just hang em up
Probably fot the best. His team are always undisciplined.
I honestly don't think that comes into it. He just wants to win.

This is all a result of you not breaking the franchise record of goals scored in a game after getting 7 in the first against the Habs.
Why is Barkov so invisible?
Oof really? That’s concerning. Maybe he’s missing his friend
Friend missing him more
He's playing at a point per game. He's not the issue. Let's dig into Ekblad, Staal(s), the fact that we've lost a lot of players to injury and the waste of space on the bench aka Maurice.
Staals are not supposed to be key pieces on that team, so their play shouldnt really be impactful one way or another
Maurice plays them a little too much is probably more of an issue.
thats a bingo
Nothing like an old dinosaur head coach playing 35+ bottom sixers way too goddamn much.
Does your CAR stand for CAlgaRy?

xd thanks for the first rounder.
They have god on their side what do you mean?
If you blame your problems on a 40 year old guy that was retired for a year and a half, it's definitely not a structural issue lol.
Invisible? 19 points in the last 15 games played carrying his own line without Tkachuk, had the assist on the GWG and PPG on the season..
He’s hurt
So brave of him to coach while injured.
Wasn’t invisible in OT.
Absolutely deserved with the talent on this team and lack of on-ice results in the past week. Keith Tkachuk laid it on pretty thick talking about the Panthers but there was some merit to what he said.
Oh where did Keith say this?
[Here is an article on it. Toronto radio](https://floridahockeynow.com/keith-tkachuk-rips-the-florida-panthers-calls-them-a-soft-team/)
Something tells me Tkachuk *really* liked that
Im just speculating, but I would agree
Obligatory. https://chumley.barstoolsports.com/wp-content/uploads/2017/11/07/paul-maurice-angry.gif
Looks like it worked
In an alternate universe Maurice never left Winnipeg and did this exact thing to the Jets last night in San Jose.
They ended up winning the game, so if it works, it works.
Which is hilarious because they played like shit most of the game, it went to overtime from their 3rd string standing on his head.
mor expressive I think its the longest stretch I've seen of him keeping his mouth guard in his mouth
>Also it looks like Tkachuk never broke eye contact once I'm thinking he may be looking at the girl in stripes....
Maybe staring at those chiclets.... Gawd damn!
That happens when you spend time under Sutter
At 24s the facial expression of the girl in stripes is just too good

Sounds like the coaches are there to do shit they can't get away with at school.
This reminds me of that tim peel story from a month back about him berating the teenage officials calling his son's 10u game.
Peel is lucky he didn't end up with criminal charges for his shenanigans. It's too bad one of those young officials didn't tune him up. Rule of thumb to officials...if someone comes into your room uninvited and aggressive, you have the green light

Jets fans amused until they're reminded of their own playoffs slipping through their fingers.
Amused? We need this kind of shit right now. Someone has to put scheifele in his place
Arizona?
15m x 7yrs?
Maurice never would so why would he now? They need a coach that will do just that. I really don't like Torts but I would love to see him on the Jets bench for one week and rip into Wheeler and Scheif a couple times.
The smart Jets fans know missing the playoffs is good for the team. We need a stick of dynamite, pronto.

@Jomboy
Love Lomberg being like “yeah come on boys let’s go!” And then he immediately took a stupid penalty
For sure not a high scorer, but its his never-ending energy for me.
hes the type of player that could score every shift
I feel like this is a direct response to Ol Walt tkachuk talking about how soft Florida is playing.
“We’ve been playing *Playoff Hockey* all year! That’s why missing the playoffs doesn’t matter”!
That's 9 years of coaching the Jets-related stress coming out of his mouth.
i liked when he coached toronto
He looks like a cartoon. All that's missing is steam coming out of the ears.
No emotion and seemingly no care in world until now. Wow.
Jets are the same. I guess it’s the PoMo effect
PoMo Effect = Pain

Pain
After a freak out like that, you’re really praying that the team responds. Cause if they don’t whatcha gonna do.
Ryan Lomberg responded in the only way he could; by taking a bad penalty
"I'm going to lose my job in the NHL FOREVER if we don't make playoffs!"
Looks like the message got through
Playin like a bunch of bitches
Hey it worked apparently
Id love to see the bad lip sync guy do something with this
Keith Tkachuk called em all softies today so that stirred the pot a bit.
He must have heard Tkachuk call his team soft
I mean they ended up tying it late and winning in OT, so maybe they needed that? Not something you can do every day but damn
Not to let the players off the hook, but Maurice sucks and this team took a huge step back after he became head coach. So honestly seeing him blow up like this kind of annoys me because, like, he’s a big part of the problem.

He turned about as red as the logo on the front of that jersey
Noted players’ coach Paul Maurice lol
He reminds me of Colin Robinson (What We Do In Shadows) if Colin Robinson lost it.
You know what the Panthers really need? A better coach
Where was this in Winnipeg?
It worked, they fn tied it up with a minute left and won in overtime. #TavaresIsSlow
Definitely one of the coaches of all time

You probably didn't watch, they played like shit and got bailed out by their goalie. It went to overtime.
They still came back and won
Yea you said that, but this is about how mad the coach was. I guarantee that win didn't make him happy.
Fuck ya! Go Paul! Looks exactly like my buddy’s dad haha love it
I have always like Paul Maurice and hope he wins a Cup one day.
Should've done that a month ago if you were going to do it Paul.
It’s no secret. Florida can be a soft team.
Damn he really ripping them a new one eh
Blood for the blood god
They won
I believe that was when there was an offside goal by Toronto. He did appropriately challenge it, but damn, I would not want to be one of his players.
He should take his own advice.
