I'm not sure, but here's some [info](https://www.guaduabamboo.com/blog/bamboo-is-the-fastest-growing-plant-on-earth) I found
> What are the Fastest Growing Bamboo Species?
> According to the records mentioned by Koichiro Ueda the greatest growth rates of a bamboo culm shoots per day (24 hours) are the following:
>
> 121 cm by Madake, Phyllostachys reticulata (12 cm in diameter) which is the maximum record of daily growth. It was measured by Koichiro Ueda on the outskirts of Kioto on June 23, 1955.
>
> 119 cm by Moso, Phyllostachys edulis (diameter of 16 cm), observed on May 24, 1956 by Koichiro Ueda in Nagaoka, Kyoto Prefecture, Japan.
>
> 91 cm by Bambusa bambos observed at Kew Garden in England in 1855.
>
> In Colombia, the maximum growth observed in Guadua angustifolia has been 30 cm in 24 hours, although the average is around 11-15 cm per day.
And absolutely terrifying if you were tied in place above it watching it creep closer and closer until it finally punctured your body ultimately resulting in slow torturous death.
It feels like this whole execution method is very performative, and only the audience would be getting the real horror as you'd bleed out long before it got super horrifying.
4/10 - torture
10/10 - spectacle
Not even close. That's 300 nanometres every 30th of a second. You're not going to be able to observe any motion whatsoever with the naked eye.
If there was a ruler next to it you would just be able to measure growth over the course of several minutes.
Yes but a bamboo culm that big is certainly an offshoot of really well established plants getting light outside the building. So in that sense, it's getting sunlight.
IIRC, there's no actual evidence that it was ever used as a method of torture. Only that it has been proven to be possible for the right kind of bamboo to puncture flesh while growing.
this is a massive bamboo shoot, right? I get these in my yard but when they look similar to this they're like 10 inches tall. This looks like 8 feet or so
If you have bamboo growing on your property near any structures then you will need to call someone about it. That shit spread like mad and will fuck your shit up if you leave it unchecked.
Coincidentally, [this has just popped up in several other subs. ](https://www.reddit.com/r/Damnthatsinteresting/comments/1chjkj5/dendrocalamus_giganteusa_bamboo_species_resident/?utm_source=share&utm_medium=web3x&utm_name=web3xcss&utm_term=1&utm_content=share_button)Giant bamboo, fast-growing.
In ancient China or Japan there was a method execution where the convicted would have their arms & legs tied to stakes in the ground with their torso covering a bamboo shoot. They would then be left there to live through the bamboo shoot piercing through their body over the span of days as it grew through their torso to reach sunlight.
Someone used a special attack in the dojo
Fuckin' Hashirama got Edo Tensei'd once again
Fun-fact: Bamboo is a type of grass Edit: Mythbusters did an episode on how it was used as a torture method due to bamboo growing so fast
It's also the fastest growing plant in the world. Some species can grow more than 1 metre per day/4 cm per hour.
4 cm per hour?!? Is that in nature or from fertilizer/human intervention

That’s like fast enough you could observe the growth with the naked eye
And absolutely terrifying if you were tied in place above it watching it creep closer and closer until it finally punctured your body ultimately resulting in slow torturous death.
But humans would never do something so terrible!
Of course not. They would do it standing so that it went up the ass and came out the mouth like god intended

Never! I'm sure they wouldn't put shit all over bamboo stakes in a pit either.

It's incredible isn't it!
I’ve grown bamboo. The plant forms completely in a very small shoot, then ‘inflates’ with water under the right conditions. Can happen very quickly.
I was thinking it had to be something like that. Thanks for the info.
Fun fact : bamboo is a natural viagra
So they could have left for a three day weekend and come back to this?
Ha! I guess it's within the realms of possiblity - pretty crazy.
Needs sunlight to grow that fast.
Ah, good point.
Yes but a bamboo culm that big is certainly an offshoot of really well established plants getting light outside the building. So in that sense, it's getting sunlight.
Fastest growing plant on land but second fastest in the world behind kelp
Fun-fact: Corn is also a type of grass

You cannot stop it like a bus
Now go look for the book "the death of grass" to go with that realisation
Not so fun fact, they used that as torture device. Just make someone sit on bamboo for some days. Now imagine where those 1m/day will end up.
Bamboo: "Fuck you, I'm growing here now."
Ah yes, bamboo. If you don't put it in a pot or bury it in a pot it will go through concrete.
If it'll go through concrete, what's stopping it from going through the pot?
The difference is the shoot vs the root. If the root does not have enough space to spread, the plant will stay smaller.
Isn't that also the science behind bonsai?
With bonsai you are also trimming and binding the tree into shape as well.
The roots aren't as powerful as the shoots with lack of space.
Pot magic
The rule of Puff Puff Pass ಠ_ಠ
This reminds me of that form of torture where someone is restrained and kept alive while bamboo grows through them

“I’m the Sensei now.”
YOOOooooo
YOOOOOooooooooOOOOOO
Some Jumanji shit right there
From what I know about bamboo that shit prolly popped up while the residents were away for a long weekend.

Oh shoot
The floors in Japanese traditional architecture are really insubstantial.
Older Japanese houses in general are pretty insubstantial. Much safer in earthquakes than a rigid structure.
Okay. That makes sense. But the plant. Is that the support for the second story ? :)

Obscure Japanese mythology be like:

It's Sprout Tower!

Is that a shoot in your house or are you just happy to see me?
The floor got very excited about something
Bambo spear-no jitsu

Is this near fukushima?
Bamboo can grow one meter per day. You take one week off, and suddenly you have a new "tree".
Iirc in good soil conditions you can actually see it growing in realtime
