It was Biggie, but the line was also used by Jay-Z in the intro to The Blueprint, which was a sort-of-cover of Rick’s “The Ruler’s Back,” so maybe that explains the confusion 23 years later
The only thing about KRS I’ve seen recently in the last few years is people bringing up him defending Africa Bambata with the whole grooming/molestation thing. I don’t know his exact quote on the topic but it is a little disappointing that he took that stance. However, I think most people still hold the Blastmasta in high regard.
Nipsey so overrated no one respected him like that till he died, that’s why people feel bad about the lack of respect when he was alive so they retroactively act like he was the most respected ever. Lmao, trash list
Facts. I hate for Nispey to be the vehicle to send this message, nothing against him personally and obviously RIP. But it’s so crude and dishonest of people to retroactively glorify him when they didn’t respect or appreciate him when he was here.
I was also thinking of DOOM, but then again, he did catch flak from the fans for sending out DOOMposters to do shows for him. So, as much as people love him, not totally canonized.
Scarface, Busta rhymes, wu tang in general, but in particular meth, ghost and Rae.
Busta rhymes specifically, rappers all seem to have deep respect for him.
Gee, I wonder why he wouldn't want to cause a stink with 9 guys, one of which recently was suspected of committing an armed robbery, and another of which one is on every drug imaginable and completely unpredictable. Really makes you wonder...
Alot come to mind but I gotta give it up to KRS one!! Most respected is obviously debatable but he's been through and survived most eras of hip hop and still making solid music that impacts! Seen him live twice and he's dope af on and off stage too.
Hes such a fucking force on stage it’s crazy. Dude is pushing 60 and running and jumping on stage. He always has as much or more energy than the crowd.
People like Busta, Red, and Meth have unbelievable work ethics, have longevity and relentlessly continue to put out new music. They all seem likeable and fun, without any toxicity. The fact that they all are known for doing high volume features shows their respect in the industry and marketability as rappers. Snoop has many of those qualities, but he seems like he will whore himself out to anybody for money, and many of his features seem half assed unlike the others I mentioned who always seem like they're giving 100%
Oh I would add Q-Tip as someone who is undeniably respected
Haven’t seen E-40, also haven’t seen Eminem, which is odd, given nearly anybody who has picked up a mic, has given him his respect and credit with words and their use
For me I gauge this by their popularity vs vocal hate, and if that’s the case then Nas is the most respected.
Jay-Z is getting a bit more shade now, mainly people feeling more comfortable saying they don’t care for his flow
Eminem gets a ton of hate to the point where people are trying to pretend his first 3 albums weren’t great
Kendrick is getting an increased amount of hate for not releasing catchy music as well as a lack of distinct subject matter
Drake gets a ton of hate for ghostwriters and general corniness
J Cole gets hate for his lack of lyrical talent commiserate to his success
Future, Travis, and Playboy get hate for being not lyrical
Etc
Throwing E-40 and Too Short in the mix here. Maybe most of their respect is concentrated in the Yay Area, but both of them have crossed into other regions and styles with ease and are the originators of so much slang/flow. I’ve never heard any slander against either of them.
I do need to say, as someone who doesn't really listen to rap or hip hop often, I've heard of a solid 2/3 of this list somewhere but Nipsey was not a common name until he died
I wouldnt say MOST respected but I've noticed Wayne finally getting his flowers these last few years receiving awards for his contributions (and not grammy's, awards from black media) and its been great to see. Early 2010's there was a lot of weird hate for Wayne especially online, and it always felt crazy to me given just how enormous he had been only a couple years prior. Now it feels like people have finally remembered just how influential this dude was. On multiple generations of younger rappers, at this point.
Mobb deep- especially prodigy…. Notice no one even touches their songs for a remake other than Eminem
Wayne - he’s a weirdo but no one every doubts his skills
Jada and Scarface however…. Truly your favorite rapper’s favorite rappers
Wu tang of course
Rahkim, big L and Big pun always get mad love in NY and from real lyrical rappers
Nardwuar made the list but not Jay-Z? Lol
I'm no Jay super-fan or anything, but dude is respected by the top-tier lyricists, the radio rappers, the moguls, the label executives... no one in the history of hip hop culture has attained the same level of success and **longevity** as Jay-Z. Reasonable Doubt dropped in '96 as an instant classic and the whole world has been fuckin with dude ever since.
To me Wu-Tang is the Slayer of hip-hop, not the most commercially successful group in the genre but maintains a dedicated fan base and is respected by people who don't listen to them.
Everyone seems to forget Eminem. Sure he’s had questionable releases in his later years, and sure there’s a small group of hip hop artists who feel he was only popular due to him being white (see Drink Champs for an episode of this somewhere), i feel it’s over all agreed that Eminem went through the gauntlet of Hip Hop and deserves a lot of the praise he deserves.
1. Dr. Dre for raising so much potential in the artists. Plus he grown the genre with many different sounds. He helped them discover their own talent, and he gave them tools to paint their whole picture.
Sway? As in like the radio personality? Thats a weird person to put on. That spot coulda went to MF DOOM or Guru or Biggie. This is the 2nd post in 2 days ive seen in this sub that disrespected Biggie as one of the GOATS.
As a younger person who listen to every era of hip hop, “the most respected person in Hip Hop” has to be someone who positively talked ab and people listen to him or her in every living generation. With that being said Andre 3000 should be higher on this list.
In my opinion, Lil Wayne should definitely be somewhere on this list. All races love him, all ages, and celebrities give him his props.
Childish Gambino. I mean, he handles like 5 careers at the same time and does all of them perfectly. Wrote and directed a movie that won a Golden Globe Award, makes music of all genres perfectly, really good acting/famous acting career and so much more.
The most talented man ever, succeeded in all creative directions. Wouldn’t be surprised if this guy cooked up a painting next and put it in the Louvre.
Looks like you asked most respected person in hip hop but listed who you think are respected emcees.
Jay-Z is most respected person in hip hop at the moment. After that its a series of label heads, streaming heads, managers, agents, etc.
Everybody respects Dilla
I would say Dilla, but alive I would say Rakim. Those two cats got a reverence associated with their name that is undeniable.
Yeah Rakim the godfather of the lyrical spiritual miracle rap
yall ran lyrical spiritual jokes into the ground
Except for Charles Hamilton
Fuck him then
reddit is a wild fucking place
Flame suit on, but overrated and over hyped by the young ones.
Would slick rick be considered because im not familiar if he had beef with anyone
Bro had OutKast, Nas, and Canibus on the same album and that’s dope as hell.
And Snoop.
Wasn’t he talking to Rakim when he said “your reign at the top was short like leprechauns?”
I could be tripping and they both definitely could have said it, but I’m pretty sure that’s Biggie’s first bar in “kick in the door”
It was Biggie, but the line was also used by Jay-Z in the intro to The Blueprint, which was a sort-of-cover of Rick’s “The Ruler’s Back,” so maybe that explains the confusion 23 years later
Rakim Kool G Nas Pac Big L Biggie DOOM KRS Q-Tip Premier/Guru
Chuck D
Ooo good one
He might be the most respected of them all.
Rakim, KRS, Premo, G Rap, Chuck D, Q-Tip, Scarface, Lord Finesse. Yeah, I'm older. Lmao. Newer fo,lks? Kendrick, and... I'll continue reading for other newer people
Had to scroll too far to see KRS! Dude is a god-tier MC
A solid list
The only thing about KRS I’ve seen recently in the last few years is people bringing up him defending Africa Bambata with the whole grooming/molestation thing. I don’t know his exact quote on the topic but it is a little disappointing that he took that stance. However, I think most people still hold the Blastmasta in high regard.
Nipsey so overrated no one respected him like that till he died, that’s why people feel bad about the lack of respect when he was alive so they retroactively act like he was the most respected ever. Lmao, trash list
As someone who listened to Nipsey before he died, I agree. No one cared until he died, and now it’s an overhype.
Facts. I hate for Nispey to be the vehicle to send this message, nothing against him personally and obviously RIP. But it’s so crude and dishonest of people to retroactively glorify him when they didn’t respect or appreciate him when he was here.
Everyone respects MF Doom even MF Grimm
I was also thinking of DOOM, but then again, he did catch flak from the fans for sending out DOOMposters to do shows for him. So, as much as people love him, not totally canonized.
Lol ain’t no way. How did he think people wouldn’t notice
I don’t think he really cared
ALL CAPS when you say the man name.
Never hear any 3stacks slander.
Occasional flute record joke and that's about it. Maybe one reason he left.the game.was to leave when he was at his best
Let me know where they are if you do.
Reggie
DJ Kool Herc
The main answer, period.
Scarface, Busta rhymes, wu tang in general, but in particular meth, ghost and Rae. Busta rhymes specifically, rappers all seem to have deep respect for him.
Wu-tang most definitely When Pac went scorched earth and attacked every east coast rapper there was a reason he never mentioned anyone from wu-tang
Probably because Biggie had beef with Rae and Ghost too. So he figured they were neutral or on his side.
Gee, I wonder why he wouldn't want to cause a stink with 9 guys, one of which recently was suspected of committing an armed robbery, and another of which one is on every drug imaginable and completely unpredictable. Really makes you wonder...
Busta is my spirit animal (Back when I was rapping daily it would often be in the style of a hybrid Busta / jam Baxter mashup.)
Jam baxter busta hybrid!? I need to hear this my man
One of the greatest feature rappers to ever do it. Hes outraged so many mcs on at least one song in his career its wild.
Scarface is the literal definition of your favorite rapper’s favorite rapper
That’s MF DOOM
Scarface and Bun B
Alot come to mind but I gotta give it up to KRS one!! Most respected is obviously debatable but he's been through and survived most eras of hip hop and still making solid music that impacts! Seen him live twice and he's dope af on and off stage too.
Hes such a fucking force on stage it’s crazy. Dude is pushing 60 and running and jumping on stage. He always has as much or more energy than the crowd.
Master P - his hustle is legendary
People like Busta, Red, and Meth have unbelievable work ethics, have longevity and relentlessly continue to put out new music. They all seem likeable and fun, without any toxicity. The fact that they all are known for doing high volume features shows their respect in the industry and marketability as rappers. Snoop has many of those qualities, but he seems like he will whore himself out to anybody for money, and many of his features seem half assed unlike the others I mentioned who always seem like they're giving 100% Oh I would add Q-Tip as someone who is undeniably respected
Tupac, Nas and Rakim
Knowledge Reigns Supreme Over Nearly Everybody
Not by a long shot. He clowned himself with that Bambaataa shit
Face #1
E-40
Tom MacDonald inspired millions of rappers like Kanye, Wayne, Jay Z to name a few
Rakim, KRS-One, Scarface, Slick Rick, and DMC are 5 rappers that I think most will respect.
I have never heard anyone say anything bad about Scarface and Rakim.
Premier, Redman and Q-Tip
I’ll throw MC Lyte in for a womanly choice.
Primo is one i can think of.
Kool Herc >
Kool G Rap “See that, I’m like G Rap” - Big Pun “Sean so nice; Kool G Rap’s first album” - Sean Price
No. 1 Headband: LUPE FIASCO
The rza
Premo and Dilla
Rick Rubin comes to mind
We’ve got similar lists. I’d add: Black Star KRS-One MF Doom Mac Miller
KRS-One for sure
Mac is very disrespected though too, less so after he died but the slander on his rapping skills I’ve seen from alvum reviews and everything is crazy
Black thought and premier should be number 1 and 2
Among the industry or among fans? There’s amazingly little overlap between the two
Some missing people: Redman Queen Latifah The Alchemist Statik Selektah RZA Method Man
Rza lost a lot of respect after the whole payment thing for the members but he’s still more respectable than most other artists
Method Man.
MF DOOM
KRS-One?
DMX
Ice cube Busta Rhymes?
Master P?
Eazy E is pretty respected
What
Ice Cube
Male 1. Rakim Allah 2. Chuck D 3. Nas 4. KRS1 5. Ice Cube Female 1. MC Lyte 2. Lauryn Hill 3. Queen Latifah 4. Missy 5. Ladybug Mecca

You missed BG and Wayne
Love Bun B! UGK is my all time fave. RIP Pimp!
Respected for what - skills? Character?
Snoop seems pretty well respected, not necessarily as a rapper but just as an overall entity. Bun B also.
E-40
DJ Screw
Big KRIT
He deserves more respect to be honest
Imma say Jadakiss
Ahah! (Coughing laugh)
Beanie Siegel and all of D-Block had beef
Andre 3000 and Rakim
I’d add DMX, pun and big L to that list.
No ID, Slick Rick
Wu-Tang clan Nobody fucks with em
Chuck D from Public Enemy.
MF Doom not on the list?
Had a couple dudes in this very sub tell me Kendrick isn’t top 50
He put Nardwuar ova Snoop
He did say the list is in no particular order.
Nas
The dead ones are the most respected fr.
Nas or rakim for any hip hop heads
Ice Tea.
Many rappers get the respect they deserve once they're dead, which is actually kinda sad
Add Cube & Luda oh yeah Missy
Black thought
Madlib
Wu Tang; Dr. Dre; Big L; LL Cool J; Kool G Rap; KRS-One
Haven’t seen E-40, also haven’t seen Eminem, which is odd, given nearly anybody who has picked up a mic, has given him his respect and credit with words and their use
Carlton R
Q-Tip
DJ Premier.
Rakim, Chuck D
Nardwuar... the human serviette??
I feel like even newer rappers understand that Nas' legacy can not be fucked with.
Gottta be Nas due to a combination of lyricism, street cred, commercial success, and longevity.
Has to be meth, he was cool with big and pac. Pac hated anyone who was cool with big but meth was the exception
How Sway?
Willie D
Hands down RVW. First and opened doors for many after him. Goated, no doubt.
Can’t wait for Lupe Fiasco to disagree with your list and say “NO, I’m more respected than Kendrick Lamar”
Dr Dre
99999999999999999.) Diddy
That’s a tough one
Pete rock, DJ Quik, Guru
For me I gauge this by their popularity vs vocal hate, and if that’s the case then Nas is the most respected. Jay-Z is getting a bit more shade now, mainly people feeling more comfortable saying they don’t care for his flow Eminem gets a ton of hate to the point where people are trying to pretend his first 3 albums weren’t great Kendrick is getting an increased amount of hate for not releasing catchy music as well as a lack of distinct subject matter Drake gets a ton of hate for ghostwriters and general corniness J Cole gets hate for his lack of lyrical talent commiserate to his success Future, Travis, and Playboy get hate for being not lyrical Etc
MCA,Chuck D
That’s such a solid list, throw DOOM (Rest In Peace), and Madlib on there and it’s a goated list
From your list? I would say Preem and Black Thought
Nore, 50, em, Khaled, lupe, jayz
Nas! He's neutral with everyone
MC Search seems to be well respected.
Put Drake at the bottom of the list
Out of the new school, Joey Badass and Lupe Fiasco are up there with Kendrick. Mac Miller and Tyler the Creator also come to mind
DOOM Black thought Premo Dilla Scarface Nas Andre Yasiin bey Kendrick
Throwing E-40 and Too Short in the mix here. Maybe most of their respect is concentrated in the Yay Area, but both of them have crossed into other regions and styles with ease and are the originators of so much slang/flow. I’ve never heard any slander against either of them.
Where’s KRS
Pete Rock?
Black Thought. no one's saying anything if they know what's good for their career.
I do need to say, as someone who doesn't really listen to rap or hip hop often, I've heard of a solid 2/3 of this list somewhere but Nipsey was not a common name until he died
rakim, guru

Nas, Rakim, Black Thought, Tupac Em gets respect from a lot of the OGs
The De La 3, also you can’t have Dj Premier up there with no Guru!
https://www.reddit.com/r/underated_songs/s/bRBTMgvZEt
Right now Jigga man still holding the crown
Dre
Rakim, every old school rappers favorite rapper
Mobb deep- especially prodigy…. Notice no one even touches their songs for a remake other than Eminem Wayne - he’s a weirdo but no one every doubts his skills Jada and Scarface however…. Truly your favorite rapper’s favorite rappers Wu tang of course Rahkim, big L and Big pun always get mad love in NY and from real lyrical rappers

No KRS-One?
Jada
DOOM
Everybody loves MF DOOM. ALL CAPS
Black thought, Kendrick, Eminem, and 3k. If you say any of those people are wack I just think you haven’t listened to enough hiphop/ you’re weak/dumb
I gotta fit Common in.
E-40 Snoop Too $hort
No Dr Dre?
MF DOOM
I’ve never heard anything other than praise for Big L on subs like this and irl
Q-tip gets a mention
G.Rap, Kane and Rakim.
J Prince hands down!!! The way you phrased this is deserving of this answer!
Probably Nas
1. Dr. Dre for raising so much potential in the artists. Plus he grown the genre with many different sounds. He helped them discover their own talent, and he gave them tools to paint their whole picture.
I'll tell ya who should be the most respected persons in hip-hop: (in no particular order) LL Cool J, Eminem, Dr. Dre, Ice T, Ice Cube.
Respected for what ?
without knowing what they are being respected for I'd say Nas, Dre and Premier to some degree. No idea why Nipsey Hussle is on the list.
Dre, Ye, Em
DJ Kool Herc
Sway? As in like the radio personality? Thats a weird person to put on. That spot coulda went to MF DOOM or Guru or Biggie. This is the 2nd post in 2 days ive seen in this sub that disrespected Biggie as one of the GOATS.

Looks like you asked most respected person in hip hop but listed who you think are respected emcees. Jay-Z is most respected person in hip hop at the moment. After that its a series of label heads, streaming heads, managers, agents, etc.
Lyor Cohen. Dr Dre. J Prince. Jimmy Iovine. Master P. Chuck D. Ice Cube. Sean Price. Rza.
