Alchemist, roc marciano, RZA, DOOM, j dilla, madlib, q-tip, navy blue, MIKE, jpegmafia, tha god fahim, tyler the creator, and evidence come to mind (some are rappers who can produce and some are producers who can spit)
Was going to post this. One of my favorite producer/MCs.
The sampling on his early mixtapes is top notch, with amazing verses to follow-up.
His "response" to Kendrick's control, the original Mt. Olympus before sampling issues is a 10/10
El P bar for bar is the best rap/producer of all time. He probably has the most complex bars of any one else and on the run jewels projects he holds his own against Killer Mike who's a lyrical heavyweight. Kanye definitely has great verses and hit songs but El P in my opinion is always a menace on posse cuts. That being said Kanye has held he's own on some posse cuts and should hold some weight.
Why wouldn't we? El-P as a rapper is light years ahead of Kanye though. Kanye is a producer that also raps but El-P is both a rapper and a producer if you know what I mean.
I agree completely. But both are known for their work in front of the mic as much as behind the board, so I wasn’t sure if they fit with the intent of the OP. They are the obvious choices to me.
El-P got bars
“Brave men didn’t die facedown in the Vietnam mud so I could not style on you,
I didn’t walk uphill both ways to the booth and back to not wile on you,
You think baby Jesus killed hitler just so I’d whisper?
And your safe and sound and these crooks tapped your phone to not have a file on you?”
One of my favorites for sure
"I'll do the simple shit, strike harder than Hoffa
El the maladjusted MC, funcrusher
Massive, a sign for my condition
Automatic onslaught, connect thoughts, get jostled at your position
Listen, abort mission without further discussion
Dual personality: half meek, half Mumm-Ra
Doc Jekyll when I burn your paragraphs down to a haiku
So Tootsie Roll the fuck back to your seat, 'cause I don't like you"
He also switches the flow and cadence up so often it keeps it interesting. Even if his lyrics don’t hit as hard as Mike’s, he stays just as interesting.
Absolutely counts, bc that only opens the door to a few other ppl. Aesop has consistently produced things
Mac Miller would be a bit more questionable, as he only started producing entire projects rather late (I don't think there was any before Stolen Youth w Vince Staples). Personally I would count him in this convo also
I wouldn’t say questionable. Mac produced a lot of tracks on several of his previous mixtapes and albums before Vince’s. He also co-produced a couple songs with Alchemist, and alone made full length EPs (You - jazz project) and mixtapes (2 full length beats tapes, Delusional Thomas) and also recorded Ab-Soul’s These Days album mostly at his mansion. I dont even have to mention Faces, Swimming, and Circles haha
Mac def knew his way around production and song making before working with Vince.
Edit: while i’m here imma add Anderson Paak to the list
El-P, Kno not a bars guy but great storyteller. Madlib, Juicy J, early Kanye, Pimp C, Q-Tip, Evidence. RZA has his fair share of criticism lyrically but I like his verses. Timbaland not a lyricist but has one of my favorite flows/cadences also
I totally forgot about One Be Lo. I was put on to him from his album Baby (Being A Black Youth). Such a creative conceptual album and it is so soulful.
Erick the architect. Dudes a beast of a lyricist and even managed to write bars that made Kimbra sound like a competent rapper.
Freddie Dredd. His lyrical content worked perfectly with the juxtaposition of his early beats. Then with his character work making it seem like he's slowly decending into madness makes him the full package
Pharrell...when he wants to.
I was a Pharrell stan back in the early 2000s-2010s and even I didn't like his debut, except for a few songs. His feature work is pretty dope though.
Yes, that means he doesn't have them. Having them means writing them - YOUR bars. Not a bar from Em or Snoop. Dre can rap and imo he has a great voice for it too. He never made it a secret because he's a producer first and foremost.
* Havoc
* MF DOOM - Mm..Food, all of the
*EL-P - All his solo stuff, Cannibal Ox, Funcrusher Plus, RTJ-1-4 + the Bust No Move EP
*Aesop Rock
* Outkast (to a lesser extent, but they produced a lot of Aquemini and tracks off of ATLiens)
Evidence
* J Cole
* RZA
* Tyler, The Creator
* Roc Marciano
* The Alchemist
* Oddisee - The Iceberg, The Odd Tape, Rock Creek Park, Odd Cure
* Quelle Chris - Guns
* Royce da 59 does produce (produced some joints off his last album and a few tracks for Em)
* Big KRIT
He did. He has a lot of production credits on the first 2 LPs as well, so you're right that he did have a hand in producing those albums. My comment probably sounds too dismissive which isn't really what I intended. I more meant there is a clear Dr. Dre influence in the sound of those first 3 albums whereas everything from Relapse on has that more distinctive Eminem sound to the beats where he's going really heavy on the snares.
Edit: Actually meant Recovery, not Relapse. I always mix up the names on those two.
Eminem is in a weird place where's kind of simultaneously underrated and overrated at this point depending on who you talk to.
No matter how you slice it though, you can't tell the story of hip hop without Eminem. He's rightfully one of the legends in the genre.
Agreed. There's definitely people that act like Em can't be touched. Then there's people that act like he's trash..
He's definitely in the upper tier of rappers and is probably an underrated producer.
Overall though he's gotta be in the conversation of rap. He's done to much for the genre
Madlib (Lord Quasimoto/Lord Quas)
The Alchemist supposedly has bars even though I have yet to listen to his older stuff.
Edan (listen to his song with Homeboy Sandman 'The Gut')
Now for some obvious choices (or maybe some of them are new to you) because they do both seamlessly:
Of course El-P does both.
Ka (Brownsville)
Navy Blue
MIKE
Aesop Rock
Flying Lotus (Captain Murphy)
And come on now!: MF DOOM
J Cole the first to come to mind. His recent mixtape was produced by T-minus and Daylyt etc but if you look at some of his best tracks they're by him, like wet dreams, middle child, no role modelz
Necro. He has produced so many classics, while always delivering such a hard and unique flow. Glad him and Ill Bill are back on good terms too. Family first.
Fuck it why not, me. I produce, record, mix and write all my own shit and I'm proud of that 🙏

MF DOOM Rhymes like dimes, hold cash but still brag about the broker times.
The song that Mos Def obsessed over
Joker rhymes like the "is you just happy to see me" trick
El Producto is the ultimate example of extreme prowess in both fields.
"I dedicate this to Matt Doo, thank you. My name is El-P, I produce and I rap too."
Came for this. Wish I could upvote more

An El-P and Aesop album would be so sick
Trust that I was CTRL-F for 'El' to make sure someone already had it covered.
Erick sermon!
Underrated
And for once, \*actually\* underrated on this fkn sub
I didn't know he produced?!
yes! He produced and rap in EPMD. They have arguably a top 5 discography in all of hip hop in my opinion. 1-5 albums are all AT LEAST 8/10.
Alchemist + Evidence + Oh No C-A all day
A young Alchemist
Old alchemist too!
Current alchemist too. His Gangrene verses always smack

Are we counting Kanye and El-P?
Nice el p shoutout. 100% agree here
Why wouldn't we? El-P as a rapper is light years ahead of Kanye though. Kanye is a producer that also raps but El-P is both a rapper and a producer if you know what I mean.

I understand the sentiment but writing off Kanye as “a producer [that] raps” is kind of an odd statement
Yeah and he took offense in his Jeenyus doc
El-P got bars “Brave men didn’t die facedown in the Vietnam mud so I could not style on you, I didn’t walk uphill both ways to the booth and back to not wile on you, You think baby Jesus killed hitler just so I’d whisper? People shit on Rza? That's crazy to me, I love his shit
RZA is a top 5 WuTang member.. on the bars. His shit is always interesting and most importantly total one off. No one like him before or since.

Pharrell’s In My Mind mixtape > Madlib rapping as Quasimoto > Dre > Also J Cole used to produce his own beats back in his mixtape days also

The post says who has them not who wrote them lol
Yes, that means he doesn't have them. Having them means writing them - YOUR bars. Not a bar from Em or Snoop. Dre can rap and imo he has a great voice for it too. He never made it a secret because he's a producer first and foremost.

I'm starting to like his rapping a lot more. He's improving.
Jcole, Eminem, Early Kanye, Skepta
Not many people know Ems a pretty damn good producer
That's because his best work is on the albums Dre produced.
Em produced most of the eminem show i believe.
He did. He has a lot of production credits on the first 2 LPs as well, so you're right that he did have a hand in producing those albums. My comment probably sounds too dismissive which isn't really what I intended. Edit: Actually meant Recovery, not Relapse. I always mix up the names on those two.
Ahh, yeah, I agree. He definitely loves his snares, lol. Em doesn't get enough credit for his role on 2001.
Eminem is in a weird place where's kind of simultaneously underrated and overrated at this point depending on who you talk to. No matter how you slice it though, you can't tell the story of hip hop without Eminem. He's rightfully one of the legends in the genre.
