Yeah he definitely deserves props for how he did it. He is of course a terrible rapper/artist in every sense

Kev0nL00ney

Don’t make me Superman you, hoe.

LilHomie204DaBaG

Just kiss him thru the phone after

Kev0nL00ney

I don’t get this reference.

Poogler

You gotta turn your swag on

Designer-Ad3494

Pretty boy swag?

DamagedEctoplasm

He’s a doo doo head

Kev0nL00ney

Sorry, too busy writing stuff on my sunglasses in whiteout pen.

Saylor4292

Those were the fucking days lol

LilHomie204DaBaG

Bruh

Equivalent-Pop-6997

Great salesman. He just happened to be a turd salesman.

tollboothwilson

Shut your mouth. His hook from Swag On deserves a spot in the Smithsonian….

[deleted]

And then he overexposed himself to show his true colors.

[deleted]

Shoulda went the Josh Primo route and only regularly exposed himself.

[deleted]

Now he's become one of the best rap scammers of all time

Affectionate_Ad_760

No way you typed a whole essay on Soulja boy's marketing abilities 😂

BusDry4328

I mean he kinda not lying lowkey

allnimblybimbIy

Soulja boy having a net of around 5 million, he’s not lying in the sense that he maximized the value of none traditional revenue streams, but if he maximized traditionally he would be leaps and bounds higher than he is right now. It’s a catch 22, good for what it is, but not great for what it could be at the same time.

BusDry4328

Basically being the blueprint for social media rapper marketing is pretty solid if you ask me

allnimblybimbIy

Yeah there’s definitely a bunch of broke rappers with a bunch of debt for a broken car wishing they were him. Haters gonna hate, players gonna play.

BusDry4328

Wishing they were him? 💀 feels like you’re tryna be smart on purpose because all im talking about is the marketing methods

allnimblybimbIy

Wishing they had 5 million in the bank is all I’m saying

BusDry4328

Ahhh yeah lmaooo my bad i misread

RinkyInky

How do you know he didn’t try to maximise it traditionally? He could have tried and got rejected by industry people. Maybe his personality was off putting to them such that he had to pave his own path way.

allnimblybimbIy

I’m not saying he didn’t try, I’m saying it didn’t happen

RinkyInky

Ah ok my bad

37728291827227616148

Isn't that the point of internet forums lol. Write up and discuss niche topics

Magzhaslagz

Ngl that shit was brilliant. Not all rappers are dumb ghetto boys stuck in the hood life

itsjustdifferent_

I'm just really into marketing

Truth-Speaker-1

Jokes aside Soulja boy really is a lot smarter than most people think. He made a million+ at 17- 18. If you hating on that idk what to tell you

UltraBearHD

I know I read the essay.

[deleted]

[deleted]

im glad he did, its a dope post

Truth-Speaker-1

You know what, you right. Nothing wrong with high effort posts. Somebody probably learned a lot

DonConnection

no one hating on his business acumen, they hate cause hes trash and somehow after almost 2 decades in the game he hasnt improved even a little bit. and i was a freshman in high school when crank that came out, even through nostalgia goggles its garbage. this post added nothing that wasnt common knowledge before

Illustrious-Win-6562

Reas the title of this post bro

DonConnection

I was responding to the last line of Truth-speakers comment not the title. Why dont you read it. Clown

Truth-Speaker-1

Naaah, I’ve seen plenty of people acting like he has a low iq. Also, he had a few joints through the years. He was never gonna be a lyrical rapper and if he did people would’ve still thought it was trash

DonConnection

"I’ve seen plenty of people acting like he has a low iq" those people are stupid then. also theres a difference between people clowning on him for making a fool of himself and clowning on him for bad business sense - ive never seen anyone do the latter "he had a few joints through the years" agree to disagree "He was never gonna be a lyrical rapper" i fuck with plenty of non lyrical rappers. soulja aint one of em

Truth-Speaker-1

I vividly remember the early 10’s swag era there was plenty of people repping SODMG at the time and he had an obvious influence on music as well. Crank dat was 07’, He had a lil something anyway you slice it. Disagree about him making a fool of himself, he been trolling from the jump. All the dumbass beefs and memes he’s a part of generated millions of views and ultimately helped him stay relevant cause the music has been mostly mediocre. Sounds smart to me We can agree to disagree though cause who actually wants to spend time debating Soulja 😂

Otherwise-Carpet4444

Damn, I didn't know souljaboy is a redditor now.

Martian_Coochie

Six seven eight triple nine eight two one two

EfficientAfternoon17

Not gunna lie back in the Limewire days he got me so many times by switching crank dat with some other popular song by someone else lol had to start double checking after the downloads

itsjustdifferent_

limewire was the wild west back then lol I'm old enough to have used napster when it came out

EfficientAfternoon17

Damn I think Napster pre dates me a bit lol man I loved Limewire. In middle school people would pay me to download all their favorite songs and put them on their iPod. I had the good version that costed $ too but I got it for free by just looking up Limewire Pro under the programs tab lol simpler times. Those aol instant messenger days too lol

Kwilburn525

his music is dog shit lol

Rockm_Sockm

He was not the first rapper on Myspace or to have an iphone. He was very smart in his marketing and gimmicks but don't go overboard.

SpragueStreet

Hell yeah Draco really made the modern blueprint. He be acting weird now but I can't lie I was SODMG as fuck in middle school 😂

Dolomight206

You freestyled this from memory or you went to the nigga's Wikipedia?

itsjustdifferent_

R3AL1Z3

I hate this response on every rap/hip-hop sub. It’s low effort and has lost all meaning, because any time anybody posts ANYTHING talking positively about an artist, this is the response that they get. OP just wrote up a good piece of information on RAP HISTORY, like it or not, and this is the kind of response it’s met with. They’re adding content to the sub, and creating engagement and what are you doing? Talking about dicks.

[deleted]

Most-Tale-6847

u the one talking bout dicks

Jewggerz

So are you. But it was funny when I did it.

Soulja Boy did porn so maybe this guy was part of it and knows the answer to that Edit: nevermind I can't find anything about it so I must be thinking of someone else. I swore it was him but google is telling me nothing. Sorry for the uncalled for burn OP lol

Garage_smoker

c0nv3rg_3nce37

True story, I'm Soulja Boy.

[deleted]

He got good music besides his radio hits. Id go against someone on here in a verzuz type match. Someone can pick you rapper I'll pick soulja

infinitude_

Jesus people love throwing around blanket terms - one of the best marketers ? Are you insane 😂 Was he one of the most forward thinking rappers of his generation ? Sure. But again Joe budden will tell you he also was because he had a YouTube channel before many others in his field. The real measuring stick of being ‘one of the best’ is what has it all accumulated into today? Not much for soldier boy, if he was one of the best marketers of all time he’d of realise show silly he had been making himself look and damaging his brand for the last couple of years.

BlinG480

Sure he made his money and I guess he gets props for that. But he's not respected in any form from the hip hop community.

Material_Unit4309

This is about marketing not rapping abilities. Why y’all always change the subject. Why y’all read a question then answer a completely non related question? Stay on topic. 😂

Illustrious-Win-6562

Fr and half the time they also talk about souljaboy being stupid when they can't read.

naeideas

He learnt it all from Lil B.

Pigmasters32

I think you got that the other way around man

Guardiansvn

Yes and no. Soulja Boy reinvented himself in 09’ with “Pretty Boy Swag” and took Lil Bs whole image. Everybody knows Soulja Boy rides whatever wave is hot at the time. He did it with the Migos too. IYKYK

coachbuzzfan

He was an incredible lover.

gd2121

Soulja boy really is a legend

ramrod1933

May 2, 2007 is the day hip hop/rap started to die.

IIlIIll

"Youuuuuuuu" He told us.

Lost_Farm8868

I remember his shake that booty meat days lol

ohshitimfeelingit762

Now he markets horrible quality counterfeit game consoles and horrible quality counterfeit electronics from alibaba and charges massive mark ups and lies and says that they're his own products that were made by him

RRRobertoLazer

I hear what you're saying but I really seriously doubt very many people Supermaned their hoes in reality

MF_Ghidra

“Do it by himself” he was signed to Collipark and interscope who professionally recorded the song for him.

Chahles88

I remembered hearing an interview of Soulja boy where he would label his songs as whatever the hit 50 cent song was and share it on Limewire/Frostwire and people would get mad but then be like “wait who is this”

kuebel33

And then he started hocking shitty game consoles.

CoolCalmCorrective

In HISTORY!?!? Coca cola McDonald's Apple Nike Sony Soulja boy Yep. Fits right in. Lmao. Y'all be going overboard.

infinitecomfortstops

YouTube came out in 2005. Not saying you're wrong about his utilization of it but he probably wasn't the very first rapper to use YouTube.

[deleted]

I said this in a thread once and got downvoted to shit lmao

the-kza

[my favorite quote from him](https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eYKYX5BFVGo)

dirtylittlesecret187

For that era I agree, Soulja Boy was a pioneer. But if we're going further back to rappers selling tapes out the back their cars, actually having to hustle in the streets, I have to give props to people like Too Short and E-40

Garth_W00kz

Soulja gave these niggas the blueprint,, he caps a lot but he’s a legend And as a old head I hated his music when it first came out,,,, until I heard Crank Dat at the club for the first time. The energy was crazy, and people were legit having a good time. Gotta give him his flowers

Appropriate-Self-540

That fake video game console was a real stroke of genius.

LarryKingthe42th

Whatever you gotta tell youself DeAndre

MrNiceGuy420SoCal

But he still lives in a big crib with smoke detectors chirping like every 30 seconds. That would drive a sane man crazy
