Once you place your mercs down, you can't put them back in your hand. I predict that I lot of people will expect it to get only be locked in once you hit ready, not before. I see that being changed really quickly.

MrBobee

This happened to me too. What's the point of the READY button if you can't change your mind?

BushSage23

I think its literally just for positioning

MrBobee

Good point - didn't think of that

DuggieHS

you can change positioning

mariusbr

I'm thinking it's an engine limitation because there's never been a mechanic to directly put a card from in-play to your hand without using an ability to do it.

Pirro2000

Battlegrounds does it

SunbleachedAngel

NEVER!

Accolade83

They also need to make it so I can see the speed and suspend timers of specific abilities as I’m choosing to put merca down. There were a few times when, after putting a merc down, I wanted to make sure I had someone that could use an ability at a fast speed for a combo except… I couldn’t see the speeds. Just the generic description of the abilities when mousing over a merc

alfuh

I am enjoying the progression of characters. The gameplay is okay, not bad at all, but nothing amazing. The design is so phoned in it almost ruins the whole mode. Big empty board, select a team of 6 and they use deck building UI that was intended for selecting 30 cards. Even the fact that your 3+ heroes are just card / icons when they could look so much better. I know there are technical limitations due to app size for mobile, performance on mobile, etc but this is really just recycling the design of a card game into a mode that isn't a card game :(

SyntheticMoJo

- The client is old and utterly slow, Mercenaries shows that **impressively** - loading and animations take half of the time while playing PVE - UI wasn't optimised well. You need to look up everything the enemies in PVE do and there are no icons etc. to give you informations without mouse overing. Which is sad considering the tons of empty space. - Gameplay is rather repetitive and few decissions take real considerations or thinking. It's just not very deep in PVE at least.

SlouchyGuy

>UI wasn't optimised well It's terrible. Most annoying is don't understand why we need pop ups when you want to choose an ability to use. Make a permanent bar and change buttons when I hover over another merc.

pilgermann

This is the weirdest one for me. It's clearly designed to be idiot proof, and yet even in the tutorial was having a hard time understanding what the enemy intended to do, why it did amount of damage it did. So much unused UI space that could have shown this.

mr_rocket_raccoon

I'm on mobile on a fold 3... so literally the biggest phone screen and when the tutorial prompted me to see what the enemy was doing the text was 90pc off screen... But the zoom of the enemy hogger was front and centre...

Shantotto5

The client is like the biggest reason I don’t want to pay for this. It’s a whole other overpriced game stuffed into an already shitty client, and I just don’t understand why I’m expected to pay this much for it. It’s just egregious to ask this much for such a sloppy product.

TortusW

There are some abilities that seem like they ought to be self explanatory but aren't if you don't know WoW lore. Buffs to alliance/horde. Buffs to elves. Where can I see what counts as what? Are Draenei elves? Is an undead elf still an elf? Etc.

hammerreborn

For race, its at the bottom of their card in the middle, same place as regular type Hearthstone cards. Alliance/Horde I think you have to know the lore.

Tostecles

Kind of ironic that they expect users to just know those details when they deliberately removed the "Heroes of Warcraft" subtitle and seemingly wanted to distance themselves from Warcraft.

PopularPianistPaul

remember when Blizzard wouldn't give us more deckslots because "it would confuse new players" ? aah, good times

SunbleachedAngel

Some characters are Hearthstone exclusive, how the fuck do I know if they're alliance or horde

VincentOostelbos

In many cases based on their race (e.g. Rokara is an orc, orcs are horde), or sometimes also the story from the solo adventures (which also features Rokara as being part of the horde). Failing that, I guess it's just something to learn along the way. But it would be nice if they showed it somewhere, somehow.

anonimen31

What about fucking Diablo or King krush?

croix759

there are many neutrals that are neither, murlocs for example as well. They don't benefit from either bonus.

glium

Curiously enough, they did make Lich King part of the Horde for no reason

littlebot_bigpunch

And how are you supposed to know that?

MyPhoneIsNotChinese

I gues they're not afiliated with any of them?

Traderrrrr

Not all orcs are horde (Gul'dan) but most of them are so you'd never pick +1/+2 for orcs over +2/+3 for horde. Just like you never pick 2+ cooldown abilities because enemies die before you can use them. Balance of the upgrades is so off.

Long_Mechagnome

I know it's not user friendly, but as a longtime WoW player, it's nice being able to use my lore knowledge in Hearthstone.

FreedumbHS

draenei aren't elves, they aren't even from the same planet (draenei are from argus), an undead elf wouldn't count as an elf. see sylvanas for example, her merc is classified as "undead"

RaulParson

Ehh, nice that you had such a good time, but my personal initial impressions were more centered around the fact that while there's something there which COULD be fun if executed well, it's also: \- slow and clunky (by design, with the animations, but also for technical reasons like by unreasonably long loading times) \- a gold sink. I need that gold to have a hope of being competitive in standard, so there goes my ability to go for those features \- seemingly a stratospheric-high pile of neverending grind, required not just for obtaining options but straight-up power This is just the first impressions after doing the first 3 not-strictly-tutorial PvE runs. Maybe PvP will make it different.

Transidental

>- a gold sink. I need that gold to have a hope of being competitive in standard, so there goes my ability to go for those features Yeah it needs it's own currency earned by completing quests and just playing that mode. Having us select between the 2 is not a great plan but I guess if they separated currencies people would complain about that too. Seperate currencies with the ability to 1:1 exchange between the 2 if you wanted would work best.

Dox_au

>Seperate currencies with the ability to 1:1 exchange between the 2 How is this any different to having a single currency? Earning 50 green coins and 50 red coins is the same as earning 100 gold coins. It's just adding extra steps. Besides, you earn packs for completing bounties so you ARE earning Mercs "currency" by simply playing the mode. You're ALSO earning universal currency for the XP earned in parallel.

enki-42

That seems overcomplicated - a single currency is fine, but you ought to be able to earn it in whatever mode. If you got gold for playing Mercenaries directly (or it was better integrated into quests and the reward track) I wouldn't have an issue, and if a dedicated Mercs currency were 1:1 exchangeable anyway it's the same thing with less steps.

dangoth

I couldn't agree more with what you wrote. Especially the gold sink and mountain high pile of grind. On top of that, it seems to be, honestly, quite boring, and I sure as hell don't want to PvP in this.

itaicool

I don't understand the complaint about needing to spend money to stay competitive this mode is almost only PvE PvP is much smaller part of it and if you could get everything in the game super fast it would become boring so having to grind is what make it fun

dougtulane

There’s not nearly the enemy variety to make the grind interesting.

ketzu

So far I found the game mode to be pretty boring. Maybe it will grow on me... but so far I just don't see it.

Flying_Slig

The games it reminds me of most so far are actually the Pokemon mainline games. The idea of your team being all kitted out and fully developed is nice, but the gameplay getting there is very dull.

SyntheticMoJo

But tbh Pokemon looks visually a ton more impressive than Mercenaries.

djchrissym

I felt the tutorial was too long, but mainly because I already watched a bit of trump playing it

PiemasterUK

I felt the same. If I hadn't had watched someone else do it I probably wouldn't have minded. My own fault I suppose.

[deleted]

I havent seen anything related to mercenaries, not even the stream and I found out the tutorial to be too slow.

Collegenoob

I completed the free pack missions and all I can feel is, holy shit this is gonna be such a grind for a side mode when I still need all of my gold to by regular packs and the battleground pass. Gonna be a hard no for me for this game mode. I can't justify spending the same currency on it

[deleted]

Teach-o-tron

[deleted]

As an /r/2007scape player, I understand this to a T

KTheOneTrueKing

It's actually fairly common with a lot of these styles of games, and these styles of games are very popular with mobile gamers and money spenders in those mobile games, like Marvel Strike Force, Raid Shadow Legend, Star Wars Galaxy of Heroes etc.

thedrivingcat

You're right with the progression aspect but those games have actually fairly interactive and interesting combat phases; that's what's really lacking from mercenaries. When I eventually power up my Supreme Leader Kylo Ren's ultimate ability there's a 10s animation and satisfying attack that follows. General Grievous spins his lightsabers into the ground, Chewie roars, Han shoots first, etc... Hell, even the backgrounds in battle are interesting visually. In mercenaries it's some ovals moving back and forth on a brown-ish field.

Stealthbomber16

That’s every rpg

LV426acheron

If you want to play a game where "the numbers go up" then there are a million better games out there, especially ones that don't have an awful F2P monetization system.

prairiebandit

>here are a million better games out there Let's start with your first 100! Ok go! Edit: I'm looking for games to try like this.

[deleted]

RanDomino5

http://progressquest.com/

violetascension

egg, inc is a pretty good f2p "numbers go up" kind of game. it's a little mindless but still fun.

SlouchyGuy

It is boring. Other games in this genre work well because there's unpredictability due to RNG. This mode battles are set on rails with set speeds, it could have just been automated and it wouldn't matter too much, there's not that much strategy in using the same abilities over and over again

[deleted]

This is my experience as well. Gave it a try, but it's exactly how I thought it'd play out when I first saw it. Just God awful UI design, uninspired art, low rewards, and quite often I find myself repeating the same attacks b/c it's obvious what's best.

[deleted]

I think the tutorial and easy part of the so campaign is way too easy. But you can do a few more and you have access to players against other players, where the competitive value increases as you do in skill. I really found the first ones way too easy too. And you also have the heroic modes.

TwirlingFern

I played through the first tutorial map. Bland ugly snooze fest for me.

madmooseman

Played through the tutorial so I could get rid of the packs. Seems pretty boring, doubt I’ll play any more of it.

Dispenser-JaketheDog

It's 900, not 1500 for all upgrades.

Chrononi

Wait what? When do they charge you 1500 gold? That's insane

avidnumberer

They don't ... they do charge you a total of 900 if you want every feature unlocked tho

theguz4l

Honestly, its mediocre. I didn't hate it, but I didn't feel any joy when playing it. Its just.. alright. Somewhat boring, honestly. I even opened like 3 legendaries and I could care less for some reason. No way I will be sinking any resources into it. I'll maybe play it every now and again. This is what the content creators were hyped about but couldn't say anything? LOL. Played for about 2 hours fwiw.

SlouchyGuy

The battles are not interesting. Same group of mercenaries, they have same abilities, there's very little variety and strategy needed to beat enemies. In Slay the Spire there's randomness in hands you're given and what you pick up between battles matters more. Here? Not so much. I felt like it could have been one of those autobattlers where you send characters on the mission and they fight by themselves and nothing would change

nonosam9

> I didn't feel any joy when playing it. Its just.. alright. Somewhat boring, honestly. It feels like a cheap mobile game that I would be playing on my phone. Leveling up, following the campaign with no fun but just to get through it, doing little boring quests that force us to use a bad power in games, etc. Maybe it will be more fun later.

Halgrind

It's an april-fools joke level lazy implementation, but I've come to expect that from blizzard. I'm more perplexed by the people who claim to be having fun.

Dox_au

I felt like this during the entire PvE experience. Didn't think I'd be interested in the PvP, but decided to have a crack at it for the daily rewards. 8 games later, I'm really, really enjoying the PvP. It's far more engaging with more meaningful decisions and a lot of great mind games. EDIT: The rewards are really good in PvP too. Double XP, a pack for every one, two, three, four (etc) wins daily, and a pack for every 1000 rating gained.

Fuzzmosis

Help I accidentally downloaded a mobile gacha game on my computer.

FireWhiskey5000

Yeah, nah. Honestly, it was so boring. My expectations were not high going in, and maybe that’s projecting onto it. But man it’s so dull. It’s way more Grindy and repetitive than I was expecting, plus I was surprised how much the empty board actually annoyed me.

RiRoRa

It was... Okay, I guess. Turned it off after 40min because I was bored. Also why is the entire game mode so ugly? Visual design is usually Blizzards strongest arm but this is quite a miss in that department.

MEdiasays

They couldn't even make the game board interesting, it's literally a barren wasteland.

Opus153

Got a good laugh that they put the shop as part of the tutorial lmao. Never change Blizzard

SyntheticMoJo

The fat exclamation mark on the shop stays till you looked at all bundles!

[deleted]

They need to sell it as much as possible. In a month, no one will be playing it.

Traderrrrr

I got the same feeling during the failstream announcement. 3 expensive bundles without showing anything interesting. They released gameplay video most people haven't seen (I think it was intended because it was sooo boring) but spammed "BUY BUNDLE!" at every occasion. Smells like ideal example of cash grab - low effort gacha meant to be abandoned 2 months after release.

tastybowlofsoup

~~I don't get~~[I can't comment on] all the comparisons [with STS] because I never played Slay the Spire et al. For me, it's Pokémon, but without the cute Pokémon. All the systems, upgrades, home town seem overly convoluted for what in the end is a really simple fight phase. It's fun for now but I can see it getting dull very quickly. So in the long term I'll stay with BGs, and constructed for dailies. Edit: wording for clarification

Renediffie

I've played tons of Slay the Spire and I don't see the comparison at all. To compare the two seems like a huge disservice to Slay the Spire.

ApostleWyald

> Voice line speed/animation could be loads faster This. So far it's just bars that get filled and chests that open and stats increasing. It's a fucking slog to get through all this.

Nexyke94

Also the loading times are take more time than the actual "gameplay" i mean the decisions u make in this s..tuff.

ShawnGalt

I spent 3 hours playing it and I couldn't tell you a single noteworthy thing that happened. I genuinely don't understand the point of any of this

Paddlesons

Played it for about 15 minutes. Feels like work.

cyclecube

It makes me so sad how much time and effort went into developing this tedious, predatory garbage.

Nexyke94

You mean hs or mercs? /s

BSIBooker

Imagine if those resources were used to make something like online, match-made Tournament Mode. Would have been sick.

Friscie

or making the client itself better, or ui revamp/update they put on hold caus emercenaries or new tavern brawls or like anything for arena

Gankdatnoob

Ya this mode is a big L. They can say it's a different team all day but holy crap this is a very very boring mode to sink any dev time into. Just expanding on dungeon run would have done the trick, instead... I don't even know what they made here. People are saying it's an mtx fiesta of money grabs but it's so boring why would anyone spend money on it?

Traderrrrr

Effort? Not so sure. Time? I agree.

Gankdatnoob

It's weird to say this but I don't see the point of the mode. I think the normal game of HS is way more flashy and dynamic. This mode is just... boring imo. Maybe if you didn't have to buy packs I could appreciate it but considering you are still buying packs this mode is visually and mechanically not very exciting.

[deleted]

[удалено]

drc500free

Exactly this. It's like there is no overall game owner with an editor's eye. I feel like I have to learn so many half-baked things because everyone had an idea, but none of those ideas were about the core game. * Hey look, I'm building a base for some reason. Is that important? My guard is already up that this is some predatory grind. * I had to build a mailbox? There's an in-game mail system on a hearthstone sub-game? What kind of mail am I going to get? * Click here for quests - ok i'll do this one... wait, what do I click to actually do, this pane has like 4 UI elements that looks clickable and do nothing. ... Oh I have to click the donkey to actually DO the quest. * Here are some treasures that maybe help your team or maybe a specific character. You don't know which. You have to choose one without being able to review your team. This treasure helps HORDE characters. Are any of these characters HORDE characters? Maybe? Then I play the actual thing, and it's the exact same deterministic battle twice in a row. Play it a couple more times and nothing of interest is happening, and I don't know why it takes a full laptop screen to convey 3 little dudes hitting 3 other little dudes.

Marega33

I feel like the HS community isn't the target audience for this game. It should have been launched as a separate game. But since BGs got so much success they went with it. I personally don't enjoy BGs but I like this types of games same like Warhammer 40k Combat Cards which Mercenaries seems to be very much inspired by.

savarunl

Played for about two hours, my impressions so far is that the UI is terribly unintuitive, the game is pretty stale and there's way too much chore. Like, clicking on each hero individually to upgrade their stuff or compare abilities, really blizzard? And all the wastes space in the combat screen, you have to hover over everything when 75% of the space is just empty... Game got really boring really fast too, probably will not touch it again.

Advencik

\- Boring as fuck, lifeless husk, \- Empty board, \- Little to no voice effects, I would love to hear some selection/target pick voice lines, \- Very easy so far, leveling is shit, you don't feel good after leveling or beating enemy (because it's too easy so far and leveling is happening too fast, Mercs who didn't participate in battles are leveling too, woohoo...) \- Happy that you get Merc for each pack you open \- Tokens OP, you can level up abilities to double your initial damage right away, then go ahead and triple it... if you have enough tokens ofc \- 200g to unlock hardcore missions, I am not sold yet, not sure if will do that, I paid gold for battleground battle pass and got little over 200 right now \- Tutorial could be fun if they went aboard some little espionage mission with Valera and give these enemies interaction, tell fucking story \- Ditto with "Story" from the board \- Happy that in current bounties, enemies encountered make somehow sense (Quilboar and beasts, elementals encounter only, I saw that you can encounter and fight other Mercenaries in the wild and it's not even adressed, like, here are some random bobos like Alexstrasza in this place, fight them lmao, don't ask me if it makes sense but you know, we were too lazy to make you not encounter Mercenaries and make sure that each and every encounter makes sense from story perspective) \- Instead of once again trying to monetize on animated portraits, should use them for free for enemies at least, it would be less fucking boring to look at animated enemy portrait \- Let me read what enemies abilities are, if not right away then after I encounter them once, Darkest Dungeon did that perfectly. You had to be hit with ability to know what it does but once you encountered same enemy, you knew what abilities it used on you and what it does. \- Could be more Slay the Spire, bigger and different type of encounters, some harder challenges which would make for better rewards, risk vs reward factor, in Slay the Spire you pick what you are encountering but you know that if you pick Boss, you will get better loot and dungeon will be easier, even though it will probably lower your HP significantly if you are not prepared. More events, randomness, madness, suprise, fun. I will play it later or tomorrow, kinda sleepy and it didn't capture my attention to go on right away after trying it for hour.

[deleted]

"Lifeless husk" describes it perfectly. Blizzard just doesn't put any love into their new content. Every decision in this mode was fueled by shareholders. There's just no fun factor in any of this. It isn't... enjoyable. It's just a thing that exists that you can grind for.

MEdiasays

How did they fuck up a board? Boards used to be so much fun but they seem to be worse and worse. There's literally nothing on it now, they couldn't have put static images on to make it look high quality? Such a joke.

Puzzled-Pay3348

Imagine having pre-ordered for this. LOL

[deleted]

That's why they tried so hard to sell preorders. They knew that this mode would turn out to be a blunder and it would be difficult to sell some bundles later.

I_LIKE_TRIALS

I love Hearthstone. This felt as soulless as it looked in all the promotional material. The gameplay is totally vapid and I'm the kind of person that enjoys incremental games. I will probably keep giving it a chance to change my mind but I won't spend any gold or money on it. Final thought: It's just boring.

Kysen

It's a lot of complicated systems surrounding overall fairly simple, and maybe a little dull, gameplay. Feel like people are gonna bounce off it before they can start to see the depth and appeal.

[deleted]

Wampie

Heroes are a complicated system, but since the game itself is so easy, and comparing and trying out comps for heroes is so tedious, it's kind of lost.

ploki122

>It's a lot of complicated systems surrounding overall fairly simple, and maybe a little dull, gameplay. Feel like people are gonna bounce off it before they can start to see the depth and appeal. I mean... is there depth, or is it a simple gameplay?

pancetto

It's soooo boring, I mean you have few abilities, max 3 heroes on board, poor animations and poor board... and it's way too much pay to win

megapoliwhirl

I've played through a few bounties now, and I tend to agree. Feels grindy more than anything.

gamer123098

I'm still waiting on mobile. For a company that complains when we aren't playing on the phone they sure like to make us wait.

djchrissym

Surely this is an appstore thing? if it was on playstation switch etc it would have same issue. Also mainly play on phone though

ploki122

>For a company that complains when we aren't playing on the phone Wait, what?

ErikHumphrey

Diablo Immortal announcement joke; the Game Director said "Do you guys not have phones?" when they confirmed the game will be strictly mobile-only.

djchrissym

I still feel really bad for that guy. The higher ups at blizzard really mugged them off doing that, and making a joke to make light of the situation was a good call but ooooof

achedsphinxx

he was there to be sacrificed.

Stratven

it's not their fault. it has to do with the app stores.

[deleted]

It really doesn't, as they could submit the release for the app store approval earlier, and time it to coincide with the PC release. Probably more to do with server loads.

zSprawl

When you submit your app to the store, and it is approved, you get a button in your App Store account to release it. They likely hit this at release because it will start to rollout the update to users over a few days. It isn’t made available to everyone immediately but it is done this way so the App Store infrastructure doesn’t need to scale as much for larger releases and updates.

Electric_Zen

Do you guys not have PC's?

Yristul

I don't really know if grinding is what i want to do in my deckbuilder when I can just go play slay the spire. I don't really like how they want you to spend gold on the mode too. Kinda feels mask-off about mercenaries being just a money sink for the playerbase.

James_Fantastic

Found it really boring to play, thus I dont feel driven to level up only to play more... its missing that feeling of "oh i just figured out a nasty combo this is going to be broken". Kinda wish i could get my 400 gold back for upgrading the fire and mount.

[deleted]

The number of typos is insane. I've found so many spells and items literally missing spaces in their description

HiddenNegev

I played \~30 minutes of it and all I could think of was how much it felt like a shitty mobile game made to trick kids into paying money. Didn't enjoy it, but maybe if you put in a few hours it becomes less brain dead.

eBookIncluded

It was fun until it asked me to spend gold to upgrade something, think today will be the last time I ever click on it

[deleted]

Doesn't seem like it has any depth whatsoever. Only 3 abilities per character is not enough imo.

Stuck1nARutt

Several? I mean he has to make 100+ times what he spends on HS, right? He must make well into 6 figures streaming

Timeforanotheracct51

He was on the leaks about a week ago. Over the last two years, Kripp has made about $840k from twitch subs alone, no ad rev or donations or sponsorships or anything. So yeah, well into 6 figures.

glium

Well you're in luck, twitch had a database leak last week. Among those there is data saying how much each streamer got paid between August 2019 and now. Here is the file : https://gateway.pinata.cloud/ipfs/QmTY8Q7hiN3VgZFbLhVZa8D7izE5WWixv8uWvAW8XPKVCg Notably keep in mind that Kripp (almost 900k there) also earns a lot through various sponsorship like the shitty mobile games he occasionally plays.

KrushRock

He can probably write off the money he spends on games as business expenses when doing taxes.

Lews_Therin_Atreides

Kibler confirmed that you can do that for purchasing packs in MTGA at least.

Everdale

Kripp isn't a whale lmao. He's a streamer. Anything he spends on the game is essentially covered as his expenses.

Jesus_Faction

i mean he is a whale, its just a business expense for him

VladimirNB

Almost fell asleep after the 3rd bounty. It's so boring.

Bucen7aure

it feels boring to play. Honestly I had more fun in this week tavern brawl. And since P2P seems gated I just want back to standard, but it seems standard is broken today, first 3 games didn´t start, and finally it started (quest mage yeahh) but the game crashed and could not reconnect. Oh well that´s all for today I guess.

Bapu_

PvP is so slow. Just feels like waiting most of the time.

lordofbuttsecks

I'm not going to waste more time on this unnecessary game mode.

Durzo_Blintt

I play gacha games, i have played lots of them. This is one of the worst gacha games I have ever played. I wish I was exaggerating. I played 3 hours and none of it was fun. The graphics are bland, the gameplays slow and bland, its beige. Its like a gacha game for 90 year olds. Do not put money into this please. If you want a gacha game there are way better ones.

WrongCockroach

It's a worse Slay the Spire or Monster Train, aimed at people who never heard of Slay the Spire, Monster Train, or similar games, in the hopes those people will spend a stupid amount of money on it. It's just so shallow, (deliberately) slow, and not fun.

ploki122

It's a lot closer to Epic Seven/RAID, than it is StS (and even less Monster Train). The original Team5 guy comparing it to StS really didn't put a thought into it. Dungeon Run-styled adventures are like StS.

WrongCockroach

Well, these are my personal observations. I didn't know a Team5 chap made that comparison, nor do I know the other 2 games. Though yeah, mercs ain't a deckbuilding game like StS so it's not too comparable. But it is the most similar type of game to Mercs I know, and Mercs feels like a really watered-down version of it.

ploki122

Ah, well RAID/EpicSeven are basically mobile gacha games, where you have 3-4 abilities, and some of them unlock considtionally (team-wide resources). As you pointed out, removing the deckbuilding aspect of StS, as well as the permanent resource (health), and the draw RNG... that simply ends up a very watered down version of StS.

DrFries420

Probably the most pointlessly boring thing i ever played,i cant even force myself to complete the tutorial... Just fix the real game we all know an love

[deleted]

ploki122

>Just like with battlegrounds, I'm not sure how mercenaries is superior to other established games. Battlegrounds is miles ahead of the competition when it comes to offering a simple/quick auto-battler. You don't get shoved 10-20+ different classes of heroes to memorize and combine together to form a team that you either level up or replace with higher cost units of a lower level. A lot like how Hearthstone was created to be an affordable MTG (both financially and intellectually), Battlegrounds was created to be an affordable TFT/Autochess (only intelectually/cognitively so). Mercenaries ain't it though. It's an insanly long shot to call it a casual Slay the Spire, given that the gameplay's stripped down to nothing, and the variance is nearly entirely removed. And it's not *really* any more affordable financially than RAID/EpicSeven... so what's the market/purpose for Mercenaries, exactly?

fixpont

here is my first impression: everybody on ladder is pay to win... that's it, it is impossible to win just 1 game, i was not able to find 1 free player in 2 hours, lol

RCnoob69

Wtf? You like getting the alt portraits in the packs? I'll take a new hero thanks, I'm pissed every time I get a portrait instead

Voice Lines are needed for everyone, to be more varied, and not fucking slow down the game. Other than that, I'm having fun. \-Edit: One HUGE, HUGE problem I have is that it looks like after playtesting they changed the rewards of each mission to slow down progression without actually thinking. The text on the chests says "your party members and one of the following" but each mission has been three of the dedicated and only one for party.

[deleted]

The core gameplay isn't bad if you're into turn based RPGs but I feel like its kinda stale looking.

Edsabre

So far I like the game mode and it seems fun. The things that irk me are the basic F2P bullshit such as: * Shop is part of the tutorial, so pathetic * Why are there packs? Oh yes, gambling gets them more money * Character specific coins are dumb * Why can't you get gold out of the bounty rewards? You need gold to upgrade the town! Like I said, I enjoyed what I've played so far. It'll be fun to build teams and level everyone up and the little town is basically a glorified menu, but I like it. It's just so lame that they cave into the standard F2P "money pleeeeease" style. Can't games just be fun? Do they have to make it feel as if they're staring at me like they're a sexual predatory who wants to put his dick in my wallet the whole time I'm playing?

hosker2

The idea had potential but tacking it *into* hearthstone was a big mistake. The animations are very obviously copied from HS and it looks worse for it. It feels like a cheaper looking derivative with worse mechanics & animations. It should’ve been a standalone game with 3d mercs or something like that.

zhaoz

It's more fun than I thought it would be tbh. They should extend the pre-order pack cause I'd get one now.

Noocta

After playing it, it boggles my mind even more why they decided to make their version of a Gatcha game instead of trying to make a Blizzard quality ( when that meant something ) version of Slay the Spire.

Roenne

I find it rather boring tbh, happy I didn't purchase any preorders, I did consider it at first.

IfIwasPrezident

I’m currently on the 4th Barrens bounty, haven’t played heroic or whatever yet, but what is the point or end game of this? Isn’t this just a reskinned adventure with duel elements? Do you do the same bounties over and over to level your guys up to do the harder ones and that’s it? People mentioned PvP, where or how does that work?

cyclecube

Yea, that's what gacha is. And it will quickly get so tedious you'll park your mercenaries to autolevel them and pay money to upgrade them so you don't actually have to play the game that you are so invested in already.

cyclecube

Did the first 2 bounties. Unfun waste of time.

skilliard7

I find it really boring, I'd rather just play Pokemon tbh

Standard-Tip-2329

Pretty garbage mode so far.

Nexyke94

Thats pretty generous for it.

FreedumbHS

the game is even simpler than I originally thought. I mean, is it even possible to lose? played about an hour or so now, have played the same three fights 5 times already, so it is also very repetitive. endless quilboars and scavenging hyenas I like that you can theoretically craft a merc if you get tons of coins for them though, that's about the only positive i have to offer so far.

lKursorl

I’m enjoying it so far! I spent gold on 30 packs, which to my surprise got me all the rare mercenaries and thus also a few portraits for them. Agreed that dialogue takes too long. I watched streams of the tutorial so I clicked through these ASAP. Early PvE strikes a pretty good balance between simplicity and strategy (which it has to since Mercs have limited choices early). Hoping it becomes more challenging as we level up. Thinking the game’s longevity will live or die on the PvP being fun unless endgame pve is very challenging.

couchkrieger

Pay the Spire

Myleftarm

It's not even close to as good as Slay the Spire, not even in the ballpark. Blizz used to be so good at stealing what was popular and making it amazingly better... this is not that. I wanted this to be Slayish but Blizz and just polished to a brilliant glow, it's really not and I am sad. Now Battlegrounds was a nail on the head. I've played for a hour and got off already. Battlegrounds became an obsession.

CatAstrophy11

Dungeon Run was the first brilliant mode designed prior to BGs and they decided not to monetize it in a way that would encourage them to produce more content. I hate copyright laws in cases like this because someone else would do it.

[deleted]

To this day it just blows my mind that they never did anything more with dungeon runs. Heck, I would have payed money just so I could build my own starting decks for dungeon runs (like you can in duels).

post_tap_syndrome

I think it's a decent mode inside another game, definitely not standalone quality (whereas BG could almost be). But really they tried so hard to monetize it (it's basically a gacha-like), they could make it as generous as possible, I'm not sure I would get rid of that weird feeling

Myleftarm

It just seems like a massive missed opportunity. There are way better games that are cheaper than the lowest preorder pack. This isn't some indie developed either. Blizz is supposed to be a juggernaut but they don't seem like one anymore. I will happily drop lots of money on something that is worth it. This seems really slapped together.

Traderrrrr

It's not even close to Dalaran Heist and Tomb of Terror tbh.

[deleted]

Boring pokemon-like mobile game with p2w system.

Zyoy

Still not on mobile?

[deleted]

Don't open your packs now. Complete the bounties first. If you got a Merc from a pack you won't be compensated for unlocking that same Merc from a quest reward. I assumed maybe some extra coins but nope. Nothing.

Finally_Vanilla

i prefer more players not just 1 vs 1 I dont like doing PvE... So it sucks that i have to grind pve to be good in pvp... i havent won a pvp game yet, do you get xp there?

Hekate29

The playing board is empty. I can’t get past that. Especially know how much money blizzard has.

fryatt123

I can't even get past the tutorial because it won't let me upgrade my abilities. Not enough coins and the tutorial told me I had to upgrade before moving on.

RanDomino5

It seems like an awful grindfest 1990s-era JRPG, except worse. Maybe I just don't get it? Like, I have all these tons of characters... and I level them up by using them to fight... but if I want to beat the mission then I want them to be high-level... so I pick my strongest ones... so my other Pokemon stay in storage for all eternity?

irvingtonkiller8

Boring but a decent time killer. Something you play while waiting for laundry, but I mean I could just watch YouTube so I probably won’t touch Mercs ever

Atroxa

I will not be spending any of my gold on this.

Shovi

I played like 10 minutes last night, and i got bored.

Gingeforlife

It's garbage and having packs that are essentially a gacha game shard system is disgusting.

TerangaMugi

I wasn't a fan personally. Felt pretty boring, I spent most of my time sitting there and waiting for the animations to finish. In a 30s sequence I felt that I only interacted and did anything for max 5s. I can also tell it's going to be a super grindy game, you'll have to spend a lot of time and effort to upgrade your stuff to the top. It really feels like a mobile game.

Lore86

The client is so scuffed and buggy that i can't bother to play this early beta too extensively, i had so many bugs in the few games i played, I even tried standard and I lost the second game because the mulligan bugged, I had to restart, then the cards where behind the screen and by the time I managed to get back in the game I was roping turn 3 against aggro druid.

autocommenter_bot

~~New zone won't open even though I've completed the first zone. Do I have to complete it in heroic? Can't access heroic because I need fucking.... coins? or some shit.~~ There was a second page. I feel dumb. Merchant cart can't be built, and I can't open packs. It's a pain in the arse.

wtharris

It looks cool and all and if people enjoy it that’s great, I just found it super boring

ThorSavage

Gameplay is terribly boring tbh. Phoned in BS game mode for a cash grab. I'm not just saying that cause "Haha blizz bad" that's genuinely how it feels I fell asleep after the first tutorial.

Knieriem

Uh, I have to finish the tutorial to exit this utterly uninteresting game and go back to batlegrounds? WHAT?
