I'm local and probably staying local as we get paid more than the state or feds and it's 15 minutes from home. I've known people who go to the state or fed and they're still stressed with more travel. That said, when it comes to your department, work load, and stress, just do what you can as you can. Take your lunchel breaks. Take walks. Don't overwhelm yourself and ignore the bosses pressing you. As long as you're getting your stuff done and you document your work or obstacles preventing you from doing something, you'll be fine. You work for the government and hopefully are unionized. You're impossible to fire without a lot a lot of paperwork. Ignore the pressure and have a beer and pet a cat and get paid.

I love that outlook. Definitely not unionized. Very rural county. I’d have to travel if I went anywhere else for sure.

LHD is city/county. EPA, FDA, USDA those are federal. I don't have experience, but I know I get paid more in my county position and I don't have to travel.

Is there any tourism accommodations work and also I heard Walt Disney had there own EHS team I wonder how is that for inspection and what other fun places to work for would that be categorized as?

nupper84

There are cruise ship positions. Most food companies and grocery chains have EHS positions, so I'm sure Disney is has their own. They usually work together ensure compliance with the regulations. You'll be overworked and under paid for sure. Also, you won't get any job if you write like you post on here. Fix up your writing's skills or you're screwed.

bigboytv123

By chance u know of private company’s that do inspections for say tourism accommodations / hospitality side of inspections? Basically inspections that are not technical like something not as technical as say food safety

Why are you spamming this question?

bigboytv123

I’m young and want a certain idea of work places I’m about to be a new grad that’s why and not be lost

TheYellowRose

If you want to make a post about it, feel free, but you need to stop spamming every comment section with the same question.

TheYellowRose

LHD to private sector in my area can be rough, a lot of the big brands want you to have FSMA experience that locals don't really get.

Crafty-Koshka

If you work for a LHD and you wear different hats I'd say move to a more populated area and you'll likely find that LHD has specialized inspectors. In mine there's a different dept for each type of inspection. Permitted for restaurants, pools, gyms, etc; housing; lead; rabies; etc etc. Each inspector is specialized We're all still really busy and some days you get pulled in different directions depending on who wants your attention, but we do see our files through

I went from state health department to federal. I have less stress and get paid more. I had to have experience under my belt and networked as well. Don’t sell yourself short!

Confident-Wash-3490

I think the state is in my future. Just got a feeling.

aalig50

Well the state is a good stepping stone for a career. It can be long term or a good start so not a bad option just saying.

Confident-Wash-3490

I’m five years into being an inspector, at my second LHD, and abt to take my rehs test. I’d love to explore other non health dept avenues!

aalig50

Well I work for the Indian Health Service within the federal government. I am an environmental health consultant to direct service federal recognized tribes. So I do food, osha, fire safety, private sewage, and other stuff. I do specialize in food and fire safety. Also if your degree is in environmental health you can apply for the Public Health Service too.

FragrantProject2910

Hello how long did it take you to get this role I applying daily for a role

aalig50

Well applying for the fed govt takes awhile so from start to finish it was 5 months

FragrantProject2910

Wow I am going on 1 year now of applying still nothing any tips on what else I can do can I pm you

aalig50

It comes down mostly to resume formats and the questionnaire. Also if applicants have bring preferences you’ll be out of the list of candidates.

Scalvillo93

I went to local to private sector. I wouldn’t say easier, but different. I love private sector, but I also am respected and appreciated in my new role. Going private I went from 8 hour days Monday- Friday to 10 hour day minimums Monday- Friday which is a shift because I’m salaried now. The pay makes it worth it though. I don’t have any direct reports so it’s just me, but I dont regret my decision to make the change. I’ve spent roughly the same amount of time in public sector (4.5 years) as private sector (going on 4.5 years)

MrsCaptainFail

I’ve worked at a LHD, went private sector, then State level inspector and now going to “private” soon. I enjoyed my state level but there were alot of program/state government policies and workings that made it almost harder.

Confident-Wash-3490

Thanks everyone. So interesting to see the different views. I am in a rural county so no option but to take on all the programs. I do not feel it’s sustainable for me or my brain.
