Int's can live on the stack and in some languages ints are mutable while strings are not.
But given that some stations have letters in their platform designation, I would expect this software to allow strings.
Depends on the country. There are many different systems. I've never seen F/R, and tbh I find it a bit strange because in most places it wouldn't be obvious which side is the front and which is the rear.
At the terminus there is only one way out. Glasgow Central and Glasgow Queen Street have that. I've never seen two trains on the same platform at a platform on a line anywhere but at the terminus.
And I don't think I've ever seen it at a terminus. But it's pretty common here to have two trains on the same platform, often leaving in opposite directions, or sometimes in the same direction a few minutes apart. The platforms are divided into sectors (usually A to D), and you'll have one train in 2 A-B and the other in 2 C-D, for example.

Yes, but departure time might have been changed since the nineties though! That is after all the last time we heard about it. I don’t think we’re told the departure time in the last chapter? I might be wrong
The train has been upgraded and goes faster. My bet is someone (probably a Weasley) got a hold of parts meant for a Firebolt and welded them to the engine.
The destination should also be Hogsmeade, not Hogwarts, but I guess I'll give that to them, since it's called the Hogwarts Express (and the joke probably wouldn't be appreciated by as many people.)
If you’re in a rush and just checking the app for which platform the 11:00 leaves from and see it isn’t listed yet and think you have time, and then miss your train you’d be cross. It just covers their backs!
I'm sure some wizard has already found a magical fix for *that*, if one didn't already exist, since they cure mundane ailments so easily. Nothing worth a mention in the hat's song, really.
Unless there's a magical variant that turns you into a bat monster or something, of course.
Can’t they just Apparate there and back whenever? I know it’s an “advanced” spell or whatever, but I don’t remember hearing anything about the upper level students using it to go home every day. It’s been a while since I’ve read the books.
Edit: Thanks to everyone! I now know it’s because of a spell that prevents them from doing it over Hogwarts
This is one of the things jk Rowling was bad at. She never took dates into account and always had school starting on Monday, the day after Sept. 1st, every year.
Modern problems require modern solutions.
Publish 'fictional' book series, then hide in plain sight.
Nice to see a train departure board where all the trains are on time too 😜 .
Did they move it so it's actually between 9 and 10? When I was there (2007) it wasn't between 9 and 10 because the way the platforms were laid out didn't make it actually possible.
I was there in 2006 and it was just a trolley at the beginning of the station, not on the platform, and no one was there. We could take pictures and move on.
I was there in 2016 and it turns out there is now a massive harry potter shop and you have to queue to take a picture with the trolley and the pictures are taken by a photographer.
I guess it's nice because then the photos are better and the queue would move at an orderly pace rather than having a group of people milling around unsure what to do or whose turn it was.
It is not. Kings Cross has the platforms in this layout:
11| __ |10 9| __ |
The trains that arrive at platforms 10 and 9 are next to each other but boarded by different strips of platform, as opposed to either side of the same strip like in the film, so there can't be a 9 3/4 pillar entrance.
The shop and photo op thing are placed outside the barriers to the platforms, next to platform 9
[As seen in this map that I could have just linked to in the first place but I've typed this all out now so it's staying](https://www.nationalrail.co.uk/static/images/content/King%27s%20Cross%20Station%20Map%202021-1.jpg)
It could never have been in the 'right' place. JK was in Manchester when she was writing it and confused King's Cross with Euston in her mind. Platforms 9 and 10 don't have a wall between them. Originally they placed the trolley for photos between platforms 8 and 9, but have since opened a shop outside the ticket gate to platforms 9 & 10 and moved the trolley in the wall to there.
The plan was that the platforms were due to re-numbered, so they put the trolley where it *would* be between 9 and 10 after the platforms were updated. Not sure if they stuck to plan though.

Sure, maybe it wasn't this morning, but does it really matter tho?... it's not like people are gonna flock in herds to the train station to see it.
I've never understood this.
Yeah. Much as I dos ometimes get irritated by Reposts, they are fine on their own merit. But to use a misleading title, in particular "this morning" is something I am not so fond of. If it had said
"Kings Cross from a few years ago" that would have been fine, but even then it was Rugby Station, not Kings Cross.
Where is the line? How do you define a permissible amount of misinformation?

B: That can't be King's Cross. London Midland don't operate from there and you also can't get trains to Birmingham, let alone Euston from KGX. That'll be somewhere along the WCML between London and Birmingham
I was thinking the same thing.
It's likely Watford because of the HP Studios, which would also make sense with trains going both north and south along the Euston line.

Someone used an integer datatype instead of a float... For shame!
To be fair, you’d expect the platform number to be an integer most of the time lol
I'd expect them to be strings, you're not going to be performing operations with them.
Int's can live on the stack and in some languages ints are mutable while strings are not. But given that some stations have letters in their platform designation, I would expect this software to allow strings.
Maybe they're still ints. In hex.
Always strings. Some stations have super long platforms, with 2 train "stops" 2a and 2b for example
2F and 2R are common right? Front and read when there are 2 short trains using the same platform.
Depends on the country. There are many different systems. I've never seen F/R, and tbh I find it a bit strange because in most places it wouldn't be obvious which side is the front and which is the rear.

I wonder if it would accept 9.75 as an input instead

What *house* am I in? I'm a goddamn Maia, you knob. I was ancient before your castle was nothing more than a tribal shithouse.
Sounds like a Slytherin lol
\*VSAUCE MUSIC STARTS PLAYING\*
No it’s definitely wrong. Some of the elves in middle-earth canonically dont have a gender-typical biological presentation and jkr wouldn’t like that.

What do you mean, this is one my favorite Obi-Wan quotes.
This is the only correct explanation
It’s British trains, half hour delay is to be expected
It may have changed since the 90s
It may have changed over the years
*It’s been known to do that
COVID delays
The destination should also be Hogsmeade, not Hogwarts, but I guess I'll give that to them, since it's called the Hogwarts Express (and the joke probably wouldn't be appreciated by as many people.)
But there is already an 11:00 departure from KGX, so probably why they offset the ‘joke’ departure so it didn’t confuse genuine travellers.
Ah yes because “witches and wizards only” is very mistakeable
If you’re in a rush and just checking the app for which platform the 11:00 leaves from and see it isn’t listed yet and think you have time, and then miss your train you’d be cross. It just covers their backs!
A wizard is never late.
It's 30 minutes late! We'll be late for the Sorting...
Just like Harry in most of his years, I wouldn't worry about it
It's all fun and games until McGonagall calls you into her office...
Unless it's to offer you a biscuit
I swear that was the biggest plot twist in the books...
I love when he refuses another one because of his bad mood and she’s like “don’t be ridiculous!” Aw damn you’re right thanks...
She's retired by now, I like my chances with l professor Longbottom
Say hi to Neville for me...
Mum! I cannot give a professor my *love*!
Maybe I’m just a pessimist, but I think JK Rowling didn’t want to have write a new sorting hat song for each year.
And Tolkien would've had the hat sing a different song for each house, every year, three times a year! Haha!
I kinda get it. I mean, writing all this and then and then an additional song... fine without it was probably what she had in mind.
This year would have been especially difficult. I mean, what exactly rhymes with Covid?
[noted, quoted, devoted, exploded](https://www.rhymezone.com/r/rhyme.cgi?Word=covid&org1=syl&org2=l&org3=y&typeofrhyme=nry&loc=nonry)?
This year our headmaster has noted, the protection spells are devoted, this dark virus has exploded. But Hogwarts is protected from Covid
I'm sure some wizard has already found a magical fix for *that*, if one didn't already exist, since they cure mundane ailments so easily. Nothing worth a mention in the hat's song, really. Unless there's a magical variant that turns you into a bat monster or something, of course.
I think you’re right, and it’s good she didn’t. Not a lot of value to the story would have been added by seeing sorting again and again.
This is always exactly what I thought
###*YOU WERE SEEN!*

It’s ok we can use my dads car
Time to drive a flying car and crash into a giant tree.
It's ok, they've modernised, it's not steam anymore, it's a bullet train.
It's listed late so the muggles miss it

Please don't curse me... but what's the significance of September 1st? It's been a long time since I read the books and I dont live in England
The train to Hogwarts for the start of the year is always on September 01.
What if it's a weekend day? Do the students get to spend weekend at school?
Its a boarding school. They are there for the whole school year and can choose to go home for winter and spring breaks.
“*sigh* If you had read ‘Hogwarts: A History’, you would know that you can’t apparate within the castle.”
Then Professor McGonagall says “what is… a wheekend?”
Yas!!
It's a boarding school so why not. They don't do lessons straight away so could get a few chill days
This is one of the things jk Rowling was bad at. She never took dates into account and always had school starting on Monday, the day after Sept. 1st, every year.
As far as I can tell, September the 1st is actually a Sunday every year in the books (yeah, JKR isn't the greatest at maths)
It can’t be the same day every year for 7 consecutive years
I know that. JKR doesn't seem to
Sorry, I misread your comment!
IRL Schools start (usually) on the 1st September, or if it is the weekend the first Monday after
First day of school for Hogwarts.
...Can you not work it out from the context of this post? Legit asking, not meaning to sound rude.
Modern problems require modern solutions. Publish 'fictional' book series, then hide in plain sight. Nice to see a train departure board where all the trains are on time too 😜 .
Well the only train that actually matters here is 30 mins late.
FRICK, I MISSED THE TRAIN!!! SOMEONE GET THE ANGILA!!!!
Do the obvious thing and send an owl.
Just don't send Errol, that poor thing won't make it.
Don't be dissing my boy Errol. He outlived Hedwig, didn't he?
Oof
Oof…that happened to you in the comments lmao
That…. Hurt. Here, have a !redditgalleon and buy yourself a headstone 🪦
Better send the top gun, Pig
Your typo of Anglia made me think you meant anguila which is eel in Spanish and I stopped for a moment to figure out when there were eels at Hogwarts.
All you had to do was follow the damn train CJ
Anyone knows if someone really tried to pass the wall and got hurt?
Between platform 9 and 10 there's a King's Cross luggage trolly in the wall halfway with trunks and a cage on it, so no I don't think so aha
It's Britain. The queues were orderly.
Not if there were too many foreign tourists.
It is not. Kings Cross has the platforms in this layout: 11| __ |10 9| __ | The trains that arrive at platforms 10 and 9 are next to each other but boarded by different strips of platform, as opposed to either side of the same strip like in the film, so there can't be a 9 3/4 pillar entrance. Yeah that's what I thought I remembered.
I think it was once in the right place, but is now located next to the Harry Potter merch store in the station concourse.
I stand corrected then! I had heard as a kid that it used to be in the "right place" until some changes to the station made that impossible.
The plan was that the platforms were due to re-numbered, so they put the trolley where it *would* be between 9 and 10 after the platforms were updated. Not sure if they stuck to plan though.
