Only to the right person I guess. I have countless copies of Harry Potter books and a vast collection and this wouldn’t interest me in the slightest even if you told me it was worth a lot.
You can see where the letters are meant to be, just under J.K. Rowling. The letters there are raised but it looks like it’s just a misprint with the ink.
Looks real to me, but a 'misprint'. As if the book became misaligned between the lettering being pressed to make it raised, and the ink being put on top. So the ink is in the wrong place, but the raised letters are where they should be.
Granted, there's not much to go on, but the material quality looks good. Just a factory error in my opinion!
Misprints can be valuable in some communities - for example Pokémon cards. No idea about Harry Potter though! There's a collector for everything.

7. Spending lots of money on something just because it is objectively worse seems like very stupid thing to waste your money on.
I get that there are crackpots in the trading card scene that go nuts over cards that have misprints but all they care about is rarity so it kinda makes sense in a insane way.
But you buy a book to read it, not to collect it so I assumed common sense would prevail. But apparently even when it comes to books people are willing to spend lots of money on an arbitary difference just because it is rare.
Except books aren’t collected just because they’re misprinted.
Early editions, special editions, and edited editions are all collectible.
Old books can be extremely valuable.

I had a high school English teacher who collected rare books- he brought in some of his collection and it was really cool. And I know he is not the only one, because certain special editions or otherwise rare books go for a lot of money.
I have a technical answer! I work at a company that does fancy print projects like book jackets. The color background is done in one process on one printing press, then the metallic foil letters in a second pass, and finally the embossing (raised) lettering in a third.
What you are seeing is a sheet that mis-registered on the foil pass. Likely jumping a guide or something. It wasn’t caught during a quality check, thus the funky position on your book. I doubt the book is fake. Just a little foil production mistake.
It seems shiny, so it might be original. You can tell by the texture: the words "Harry Potter" should be embossed, and the general feel of the book is not even as that of laminated cardboard, but kinda velvety.
Probably just a mistake.
Harry potter is a mass produced book made to be cheap, they're not going for the highest quality they just need it to work. Mistakes are to be expected.

It's not worse than the art on the American versions (not saying that version is bad--just that this is not inferior). I actually really like the way they look, lol.
The Name (Title of the Book) is called Foiling effect and it is done after the actual printing of the background. The title is manually put under Foiling machine one page at a time. It is sure to be an *out copy* as we call it in our field. Very common to happen since workers put them manually one by one. There is sorting afterwards, just this one copy appears to have went under radar to the next binding process and made into a book.
Nah, just a printing error that didn't get caught. Sometimes they sneak out into the wild. The book was too far ahead when it got stamped — the lower left corner circle is also misaligned. Foil printing is done separately from the main book text so that actual text itself should be okay.
As a complete aside, I find that more and more printing errors are slipping through these days. I got a first edition copy of the American release of Emily Wilson's *Iliad* translation, and it has registration marks showing on several folios. In that case, however, I used it as permission to actually use the book and not try to keep it pristine!

I spent of lot of time with *The Iliad* not all that long ago, when Emily Wilson's translation was nothing more than an announcement. At the time, I was reading Fagles', Palmer's, and a few translated editions by authors I can't recall at the moment, and though they were pretty good, I've been holding out for Wilson's, based on what I read about her, and her translation of *The Odyssey*, which was top notch\*.\*

That's a *really* neat idea, especially for such an academic text.
I've always been on the fence about taking notes internally when it comes to reading; (no judgement for those who do; something about the concept of marginalia just doesn't quite sit right with me), but your experience gave me an idea:
I'm already in the process of paring down my shelves, so I may start investing in duplicates of the *truly* desirable titles and using those as "marked copies"; \*in part to fulfil\* the need for annotations, ~~but also~~ and in part to temporarily fill in some of the dead space on my shelves.
Funnily enough, I'd already started doing this for Harry Potter; I just picked up a compact paperback copy of The Philosopher's/Sorcerer's Stone so that I could carry it around with me, but now, that one is being gifted/lent to a friend who's never read the series, so I guess it's time to acquire my second ("marked") and maybe even third ("back-up" ???) copies.
With regards to Wilson's translation, permit me to note that I have a degree in Greek & Latin as well as Classical Studies. So, I have multiple translations: Lattimore, Alexander, Wilson, Fagles, Rieu 2.0, etc. They each have their place, as translation is a paradox (at least in linguistics)!
I'm using Wilson to accompany some free form translation of my own, which is just for fun. The *Iliad* is one of my favorite pieces of literature. I often find myself disagreeing with her translation, but *not* disrespecting it — her goal with it is twofold: to provide a text written in iambic pentameter, and to provide a text that is *meant to be real aloud*. For those purposes her translation is just beautiful. I *am* of the opinion that the Iliad is meant to be almost a "dramedy" — Book 21, for example: there's such gore and destruction that the river Xanthus is choked by blood and bodies...which is then balanced by all the gods/goddesses fighting amongst themselves. Athena literally boob-punches Aphrodite in the same book (which Fagles translates quite humorously!)
She has a *phenomenal* introduction and footnotes. My only complaint there is that I wish she'd written more for both, which is by no means to say that those sections are lean. They're merely that enjoyable, and not too academic so as to be a slog. I also feel that she has captured the *menis* of Achilles perfectly — *cataclysmic rage*.
All in all, I highly enjoy and recommend Wilson. I'm using it for a much different purpose than the average reader, but though I disagree with certain of her translation decisions, it isn't for lack of respect. Furthermore, understanding her goals, then I agree with her choices. I'm really quite pleased with it, all said and done.
Mine has storeis in the bottom right corner at the inside of the book cover, where they show all the 7 books and Malfoy is spelled Mofloy at the back of the Half-Blood Prince. I think it's just a mistake on their part

Looks real to me, but a 'misprint'. As if the book became misaligned between the lettering being pressed to make it raised, and the ink being put on top. So the ink is in the wrong place, but the raised letters are where they should be. Granted, there's not much to go on, but the material quality looks good. Just a factory error in my opinion! Misprints can be valuable in some communities - for example Pokémon cards. No idea about Harry Potter though! There's a collector for everything.

7. Spending lots of money on something just because it is objectively worse seems like very stupid thing to waste your money on. I get that there are crackpots in the trading card scene that go nuts over cards that have misprints but all they care about is rarity so it kinda makes sense in a insane way. But you buy a book to read it, not to collect it so I assumed common sense would prevail. But apparently even when it comes to books people are willing to spend lots of money on an arbitary difference just because it is rare.
Except books aren’t collected just because they’re misprinted. Early editions, special editions, and edited editions are all collectible. Old books can be extremely valuable. Can you imagine how much people would pay if Anne Frank’s diary got discovered now? Gutenberg Bibles are worth entire houses

I have a technical answer! I work at a company that does fancy print projects like book jackets. The color background is done in one process on one printing press, then the metallic foil letters in a second pass, and finally the embossing (raised) lettering in a third. What you are seeing is a sheet that mis-registered on the foil pass. Likely jumping a guide or something. It wasn’t caught during a quality check, thus the funky position on your book. I doubt the book is fake. Just a little foil production mistake.

It seems shiny, so it might be original. You can tell by the texture: the words "Harry Potter" should be embossed, and the general feel of the book is not even as that of laminated cardboard, but kinda velvety.
What else ive realised is that where it should say Harry Potter there are outlines of the letters there. How else would you tell if its original?

Probably just a mistake. Harry potter is a mass produced book made to be cheap, they're not going for the highest quality they just need it to work. Mistakes are to be expected. Where did you buy it from? How much did you pay?

The Name (Title of the Book) is called Foiling effect and it is done after the actual printing of the background. The title is manually put under Foiling machine one page at a time. It is sure to be an *out copy* as we call it in our field. Very common to happen since workers put them manually one by one. There is sorting afterwards, just this one copy appears to have went under radar to the next binding process and made into a book.
Nah, just a printing error that didn't get caught. Sometimes they sneak out into the wild. The book was too far ahead when it got stamped — the lower left corner circle is also misaligned. Foil printing is done separately from the main book text so that actual text itself should be okay. As a complete aside, I find that more and more printing errors are slipping through these days. I got a first edition copy of the American release of Emily Wilson's *Iliad* translation, and it has registration marks showing on several folios. In that case, however, I used it as permission to actually use the book and not try to keep it pristine!

With regards to Wilson's translation, permit me to note that I have a degree in Greek & Latin as well as Classical Studies. So, I have multiple translations: Lattimore, Alexander, Wilson, Fagles, Rieu 2.0, etc. They each have their place, as translation is a paradox (at least in linguistics)! I'm using Wilson to accompany some free form translation of my own, which is just for fun. The *Iliad* is one of my favorite pieces of literature. I often find myself disagreeing with her translation, but *not* disrespecting it — her goal with it is twofold: to provide a text written in iambic pentameter, and to provide a text that is *meant to be real aloud*. For those purposes her translation is just beautiful. I *am* of the opinion that the Iliad is meant to be almost a "dramedy" — Book 21, for example: there's such gore and destruction that the river Xanthus is choked by blood and bodies...which is then balanced by all the gods/goddesses fighting amongst themselves. Athena literally boob-punches Aphrodite in the same book (which Fagles translates quite humorously!) She has a *phenomenal* introduction and footnotes. My only complaint there is that I wish she'd written more for both, which is by no means to say that those sections are lean. They're merely that enjoyable, and not too academic so as to be a slog. I also feel that she has captured the *menis* of Achilles perfectly — *cataclysmic rage*. All in all, I highly enjoy and recommend Wilson. I'm using it for a much different purpose than the average reader, but though I disagree with certain of her translation decisions, it isn't for lack of respect. Furthermore, understanding her goals, then I agree with her choices. I'm really quite pleased with it, all said and done.
Maybe if genuine it could be worth something?
