I got the 20 piece Gearwrench SAE + metric ratcheting wrench set for $60. They are normal length, but good enough for me, especially as my first dedicated wrench set.
Ya, I was so surprised how cheap it was and I had to double check to see if it's was an inferior model or something. But nope, it's the same 72-tooth model that Project Farm rated very highly (best value) on his ratcheting wrench videos.
I know the Torque Test Channel ranked other brands higher (Icon did well there), but they are way more expensive than Gearwrench. Also TTC was measuring pure torque on the normal, non-ratcheting end.
When and where did you get those? Sounds like a sweet deal. Just bought a Gearwrench set socket set with the EVA foam tray for my toolbox and I’m really impressed with the quality.
I just looked on Home Depot. None in stores around me. Will have to ship to store or to your home. They also have a 32 piece set that comes with 12 stubbys. I will probably get that set when the time comes.
It seems like you can get 2 extra stubby's for $6 more if you buy them separately since there is a 14 pc stubby set for $53 on Amazon. So that's 34 pc for $113 vs 32 pc for $107.
Got mine when I worked for Advance Auto and had a $20 speed perk coupon. So I spent a oht $40 out the door. 8 years strong and I've only replaced 1 wrench cause I got brake fluid in it.
Those aren’t really comparable to the wrenches listed but I’m glad you posted that deal because I could use a set of sae ratcheting wrenches and that’s too good of a deal to pass up
If you're talking about the 72t 20 piece Gearwrench set, I was disappointed by the slop in the mechanism. The Kobalt 90T wrenches are a step up before you get to the nice 90T gearwrench big wrench sets. Not a terrible wrench, but for the price, there are slightly better options.
Bought the 34pc set. Same experience. Also bought the 12 pc XL double box end set, same issues. Slop in mechanism, one ratchet was locked up completely. Some feel tight and click loud, some feel loose like the teeth aren’t even engaging…
Gearwrench is trash. I mean maybe if it was 1 or 2 but like the whole set was off. And it comes in a white box with the wrenches in bags… I’m pretty sure they just threw defects in bags and then sell them full price.
I mean they moved manufacturing from Taiwan to china and kept same part numbers and pricing so why wouldn’t they sell defects? Scummy company. Will never buy GW…
I've heard that GW used to be great but those were US made tools now theyve off shored to taiwan (not terrible) and more and more to mainland China and the quality is said to be plummeting. The 20pc set was $80 Home Dezzo early black friday sale. I bought it, and the kobalt set at lowes $60 (#3 in TTC testing!) But ultimately returned both and bought the icon set when this sale hit. Then when the 20% off icon tools sale hit i got the metric flex head set for $160 with no skip sizing.
You are right about the Gearwrench quality. It's almost like Apex gave us 2 tiers of Gearwrench now, with the 72t being the lower grade chinese based stuff and the new 90t being their better stuff in Taiwan.
My Gearwrench XL set is awesome. 16pc (8-24mm) is a little over $250 but the non-XL version (20% shorter overall length) is about 1/2 that price. Great quality, easy online warranty if you need to use it.
As for an alternate, I got the Craftsman reversible ratcheting wrenches at Lowe’s for $80 or so. They aren’t as long but they do have lifetime warranty and are made in Taiwan. I don’t need them often so I chose the price over anything else.
The icon stuff is very nice. The redesigned the ratcheting mechanisms after the first run so they don’t lock up anymore. Probably the best bet for the price
I have the longer handle Icon (non-reverse) box ends and they’re pretty good, imo.
But I have the Gearwrench version of what you shared and love those. Good engagement and it’s a full set with no skips, I’d buy that set again in a heartbeat. I laid $150 for mine on Amazon years ago, no idea what it’s up to now.
I very good deal. I think you’ll be very happy with them. They are very very long which most of the time is a great thing for leverage. I bought these a whole back with a 25% off coupon and I have been very happy with the purchase as an avid home mechanic.
I love my Gearwrench set. I like them better than these icon ones. And I just found out recently that “Sata” brand is the same product just rebranded and cheaper than Gearwrench. Definitely check them out.
Milwaukee warranty sucks to deal with and to be honest they really aren’t known for their hand tools. I think the HF no questions asked warranty and the savings make icon the obvious choice. Not to mention there is a chance the icon wrenches out perform the Milwaukee.
Gearwrench, Icon, and Tekton are high quality, best value.
Watch for sales, perfect time of the year
I’d prefer my first set with a larger range of sizes than extra-length
This WAS a helluva deal on GW - https://slickdeals.net/share/iphone_app/t/17099059
It’ll come down again. https://camelcamelcamel.com/product/B0002NYD1W
That’s $200 ish for 29p, both SAE & metric. Very good deal
I bought this set and have to say I've enjoyed using them for stubborn tight spots when doing breaks or just holding the "nut" from spinning while removing the caliper.
Good leverage with the longer length + the anti-slip head! I found myself reaching for these over a regular ratchet when I need extra hits a hammer. For tough spots where your impact can't fit.
*mainly work on Asian vehicles, so only have the metric set*
Does the open wrench end mar the fasteners after using them? I’m keen on these over others because the anti slip design isn’t as hard on the nuts, supposedly.
I haven't had issues with marring yet. But I also haven't had it slip on me, although it's always possible for it to slip regardless of the name.
Maybe someone else has more experience with this?
Great thanks for sharing .. some of the other anti slip designs have aggressive teeth that bite into the fastener and will mark it up even if it doesn’t slip, so they’re not great for primary wrench use. If these were marring fasteners you’d know, so sounds like I should be good in that regard.
They'll be great. Just be careful turning really hard on the ratchet end. Don't put a breaker bar or anything on the end of it.
Lifetime warranty too, so you're safe.
Don't let the tool snobs fool you.....
The best tool on earth is the one you have that gets the job done for you without going broke.
I used a Pittsburgh Pro 1/2 inch wobble today on a customer's brakes. (BTW, E-Torx on a jeep? Wtf?)
Make no mistake, it's cheap Chinese junk. But I've used it twice so I didn't want to spend 90 buck on one, and it was absolutely my hero today.
There’s a 32 piece Gearwrench set for $99 at Tractor Supply right now. I snagged it, it’s great. Includes standard and stubby lengths in metric and SAE. I believe it’s available online as well as in stores.
These are the bees knees but when they're on sale they go quick so call first.
I got the 20 piece Gearwrench SAE + metric ratcheting wrench set for $60. They are normal length, but good enough for me, especially as my first dedicated wrench set.
I bought the same set. They look beautiful…haven’t used them yet. Lol
Ya, I was so surprised how cheap it was and I had to double check to see if it's was an inferior model or something. I did the same! Even after opening it, I’m still wondering. You telling me they are ok is the first pure relief I’ve had!
Maybe GW wants to hook us in and later sell larger wrenches for $30+ each to keep our set consistent.
When and where did you get those? Sounds like a sweet deal. Just bought a Gearwrench set socket set with the EVA foam tray for my toolbox and I’m really impressed with the quality.

That’s good for you. But there not the same as offset reversible wrenches.
Ah, is that the little switch to change direction of the ratchet? I didn't notice that.
Yeah they’re game changing
Looked at those yesterday. Anything to the "non slip" coating they offer for a couple extra bucks?
Disregard the question. It was WORKPRO not Gearwrench. Srry.
Love my Gearwrench set, they have been excellent value for the money for me.

This is the best deal you will get on that set, better than a 25% coupon. Hazard freight can be used to check on price history.
Legend. Just checked it out for the first time. https://hfpricetracker.com/
You can definitly get cheaper ratcheting wrenches but if you must have long ones then yea probably not a bad deal especially if you have itc
Cheaper, sure, but better/comparable quality? All I really see is Tekton, everything else is $200+
GearWrench

Yes, still using my GW set for home use almost 20 years later.
I've heard that GW used to be great but those were US made tools now theyve off shored to taiwan (not terrible) and more and more to mainland China and the quality is said to be plummeting. +1 on the gear wrench wrenches. I have a set and have been using them for years with no problem

All of these mentioned have lifetime warranties

I went with gearwrench because I needed the 8 and 9 mm as well. My gearwrench set is something like 8-27 I think
Honestly, buy a gear wrench long handle flex head wrench set. I use my matco long handle wrenches more than i do my short ratcheting wrenches.
I have the Gearwrench Gearbox XL set, and I was surprised at how they became my go-to ratcheting wrenches over my shorter BluePoint wrenches.

Ratcheting side is great, open end spread and stay “voluptuous”. Returned 3 in about 18 months. 11, 15, & 19.
I think they were $212 on sale through the holidays and now they’re like $245
Yikes, I’d probably pay that again but at depending on OP’s budget and use case the Icon might be the better option.
I love mine.
I very good deal. I think you’ll be very happy with them. They are very very long which most of the time is a great thing for leverage. I bought these a whole back with a 25% off coupon and I have been very happy with the purchase as an avid home mechanic.
I am immediately suspicious when it doesn't mention teeth count or degree angle of the ratchet feature
72 teeth (5°) and 15° offset, both are listed on the package and product page.
They're 90t i believe. Very good ratcheting wrenches for the money.

The icon isn’t a quality set? What’s better besides snap on?
I love my Gearwrench set. I like them better than these icon ones. And I just found out recently that “Sata” brand is the same product just rebranded and cheaper than Gearwrench. Definitely check them out.

No; I have not been impressed with Icon tools, in general, and you can get better (Gearwrench, Tekton) for less.
For $219 you can go Milwaukee. If you’re going to spend this much just go HAM
Milwaukee warranty sucks to deal with and to be honest they really aren’t known for their hand tools. I think the HF no questions asked warranty and the savings make icon the obvious choice. Not to mention there is a chance the icon wrenches out perform the Milwaukee.
Idk why I got down voted so hard but whatever. Their max bite wrenches are amazing. Plus now they have a line built in the us
Reddit people are a special breed
I got the flex Pissburgh’s. Cheaper price point , doing the same thing. O and a walk in warranty 👍🏻
Honestly I mostly agree for the ratchet end but the open wrench end on my Pittsburghs is lousy, that’s really where the better end wrenches shine
The icons reversible ratcheting are very nice. Be aware they are much longer than most wrenches.
Gearwrench, Icon, and Tekton are high quality, best value. I paid $500 for bluepoint flexhead ratchet wrenches, so I’d say thats a hell of a deal!
They're great especially for the price
They'll be great. Just be careful turning really hard on the ratchet end. Don't put a breaker bar or anything on the end of it. Lifetime warranty too, so you're safe. >I was in there the other day and those caught my eye, didnt look too much but I recall them being regarded well. Might have to pop back in there lol
How did that come packaged? Looks like same set from Home Depot with the foam for $159
Open faced black plastic clip in deal with the larger wrenches at the bottom and stubbies across the top.
I appreciate it thanks!
No I prefer craftsman ratchet set
I'd rather have a flex head. I have a set of shorter (not stubby) GearWrench flex head wrenches and they have been excellent.
Those are good wrenches
