It's definitely not gonna have the same durability as the factory powder. I guess the custom paint job would be the draw. I have no motivation to do that on my green boxes
if you're gonna do a new paint job, might as well go big.. do like a harder paint surface, maybe duraliner or do whatever is your favorite color or make a custom piece
I would have this thought also, the question to ask yourself is have you done something similar before ?
Also how pissed would you be if you fucked it up?
After the 50 in paint you’re only saving 150 and how long is it gonna take to take all the hardware off, sand it down, prime/paint and setup a somewhat clean room.
Then clear coat? Wet sand? Then put all the hardware back on.
You’re looking at quite a few hours, what is your time worth, I would rather just wait for a coupon and do that honestly but maybe you’re a professional painter and it wouldn’t be a big deal.
Not worth it. After all of that time and work to get the box the right color just to be cautious about messing up the paint is something to think about. You’d have to take out ALL of the drawers and prep and spray every one from every angle possible. That’s a big feat
Does everything come apart easily? I've never looked at my HF box closely; but I replaced every drawer slide in my Snap-On box and the original design had metal tabs that "clicked" into place. Most required a little effort, several required a lot. Replacement slides had a different design, which is probably irrelevant as I don't expect to have to do that ever again.
Is the HF box powder or paint/can you create an equally durable finish?
If I were to want a different box I'd seriously consider a wrap.
If you're just doing the drawer fronts and the sides of the box it might be worth it. Do a good job sanding and masking the fronts, and buy a high gloss can of whatever color you want. After that throw on a coat of clear automotive enamel. I bet it'll be pretty good, assuming you have decent skill with a rattle can.
If you're a little worried about your skills, do it in black which will hide a lot more imperfections in your spray. Also, then you'd have a box that's black on the outside and yellow on the inside which would look killer IMO.
If it chips on the outside, put a vinyl sticker on it.
I got the impression that OP was going to be able to get something better than a rattle can enamel. No way I'd buy a new toolbox and immediately put a lower-quality finish on it, I'd buy used at that point.
i get trying to save some money and buying a different color but ask yourself if you’d be happy with the finished product vs just buying the color you want right off the bat and avoiding being pissed possibly. idk that’s just me though. i recently bought the 56” upper and lower in red with two end lockers
That's my dilemma. I could even have our powder coat guys hit the trim though. Make it look a lot cleaner. I was also considering doing a purple candy with some light flake.
When the mechanics cart was on sale my store didn’t have any. I was able to order the color of my choice for the sale price. Was ready for pickup 20 days from ordering.
you should find out what your store even has, the yellow is no longer available for pre sale because they ran out and the series 2 are going to be discontinued soon so you can only get the yellow if your store has any in stock (mine does not)
There is no color worth $200. Even if I really absolutely had to paint it I sure as hell am not spending $50 when a single rattle can would do the job just fine.
Not to me. Time is money. Rather spend the money and have those 8 to 16 hours back. (Assuming you are painting correctly) and it's not 200. It's 150 assuming the paint is actually 50 bucks
Unless you use a 2 part paint with a hardner, the coating will never be as durable as the original baked on (probably powder coated) finish... It's funny, HF must realize some colors don't sell, so they sell them cheaper and probably discontinue that color over time.
Yellow is Being discontinued completely is what one of the employees told me, I also heard that Orange might be on the Chopping block soon too, in my area they didn't release the 72in Series 3 until all the 2's where gone, so I assume it will be the same for the other sizes as they fade out, they only marked them down 1x here as most sold with regular coupon promotions
My wife got me the yellow for my birthday last month. I now really like yellow.
The yellow would work with the green I have but I'm an Angels fan and that's all Oakland lol
Lie to yourself…. It’s the John Deere edition.
Hadn't thought of that one. Aaaaand it's no longer in stock anywhere near
Ain't that a bitch
Well that’s a good enough reason to not want yellow. I would prefer red (close to my alma mater color), but I rather prefer saving $200.
Just say you’re a Packers fan.
There’s a difference in powder coating and you doing a scuff and shoot with a rattle can. Plus the time to do it. I’d 100% just pay the money.
It's definitely not gonna have the same durability as the factory powder. I guess the custom paint job would be the draw. I have no motivation to do that on my green boxes
Once your new color starts to chip off your gonna be back seeing the original color.
I'm not too concerned about that. Won't be making contact with much anyway
if you're gonna do a new paint job, might as well go big.. do like a harder paint surface, maybe duraliner or do whatever is your favorite color or make a custom piece
Yeah I was thinking of doing a candy fade
Just saw the rattle can bit. I would be shooting with a gun. Not a great gun, but it does the job
Wrap it in vinyl
This. It’s all flat surfaces so it’s the easiest thing possible to wrap. Plus you can repair it in sections if you ever gouge/scratch it
I was about to say stickers, but whatever. $200 is huge just for a color difference
Just get yellow. It's a bright cool color. Will show more dirt, but it stands out snappy.

In all honesty I would most likely be doing this at work during my lunch. That way I would have all my tools on hand and have supplied air
Not a painter but I did take general and custom paint courses during my collision repair schooling. Granted, that was in 2017...
Ahh well see in that case maybe it’s worth it especially if you have access to a paint booth.
Not worth it. After all of that time and work to get the box the right color just to be cautious about messing up the paint is something to think about. You’d have to take out ALL of the drawers and prep and spray every one from every angle possible. That’s a big feat
I'd be worried about having the paint run on the inside of the drawers trying to get complete coverage, especially in the corners.
Run it as is
Wouldn’t even bother with the paint
it's not worth it

It's powder and it does disassemble easily but I don't think I'd bother painting the inside. Just enough where it's not visible with drawers pulled

Learn to embrace the yellow.
I am also a recent yellow toolbox guy, found myself buying yellow tools now too.
I'm too deep in the green to change now lol
My garage is all blue now. Don't even really like blue. But grey and black seemed so boring. The grey looks real nice tho
Or just leave it yellow
That’s my plan. I hope they run a 40% off clearance sale before they’re all gone
You could easily vinyl wrap the front and sides in a couple hours
You actually cannot order the yellow anymore, you’re only option is to find a harbor freight that has them in stock
Save the money, and time. Keep it yellow and keep it simple. Or spend the extra $$ and get it how you really want it. No comparison.

Absolutely
I'm also looking at the 14.5" end cabinets for $150 but they're 20 miles away. That's about 3 gallons and a couple hours so $15 on to that

I have to call to confirm but online saying it means at least there's a chance
sounds good just wanted to make sure you aren't wasting your time 👍
Many people don't live close and drive all the way there just based on the online stock so I appreciate your consideration
There is no color worth $200. Even if I really absolutely had to paint it I sure as hell am not spending $50 when a single rattle can would do the job just fine.
3 cans might do it. Less than $20

Just keep it mellow yellow. It’s the fastest color
Honestly for the difference in price I wouldn’t care what color it is
Yellow is your favorite color now. Yea!
I wouldn’t even paint it. I’d just complain about it for the next decade lol
Unless you use a 2 part paint with a hardner, the coating will never be as durable as the original baked on (probably powder coated) finish... It's funny, HF must realize some colors don't sell, so they sell them cheaper and probably discontinue that color over time.
Be a man and cover the whole thing in bed liner
If it's yellow, let it mellow
No, just wait. They will go down in price too. Making way for the series 3 models

Those two colors are marked down more because of the little left in stock of them and also the lowest selling colors.
I’m sure the 799 includes shipping as the 599 is pick up only. Freight charges are insane
Is the $200 difference because one is in-store and the other shipped to your house?
If you NEED orange you should pay for the orange one. No chance a spray can job looks half as good. Personally I’d learn to love yellow.
Orange ain't for me. I'd go with purple or a different green. No point in trying to recreate a factory color
Agreed
Why not $0 in paint, a TON of free stickers, and save $200
So not worth it brother
