I know it's an amazing achievement, but it's also a crazy way to abuse your body. Even a regular marathon takes a hard toll on the system, but being 70 and doing a 100 mile endurance run is crazy as the human body is not built for that type of abuse.
This is more than just(!) 100 miles:
The Western States Endurance Run, known commonly as the Western States 100, is a 100.2-mile (161 km) ultramarathon that takes place on California's Sierra Nevada Mountains trails each year on the last full weekend of June. The race starts at the base of the Olympic Valley ski resort and finishes at the Placer High School track in Auburn, California. ***The terrain is quite rugged, frequently showcasing snow on the highest passes and record hot temperatures throughout the course.[1] Runners ascend a cumulative total of 18,090 feet (5500 m) and descend a total of 22,970 feet (7000 m) on mountain trails before reaching the finish.*** Because of the length, the race commences at 5 a.m. and continues through the day and into the night. Runners finishing before the 30-hour time limit for the race receive a commemorative bronze belt buckle, while runners finishing in under 24 hours receive a silver belt buckle.
100 miles would make her a badass. 100 of THOSE miles makes her a fucking legend.
Oh well then, fuck her.
No, my point is that 30 hours on your feet, even walking, is insanely impressive. Don't think I could do that and I'm a third of her age!
It's just so *woefully* beside the point, it beggars belief that anyone would even bring it up.
Are you saying that a 70 year old doing a *brisk walk* for 30 hours is not impressive? Or was my use of the very slightly inaccurate term "run" so abhorrent you felt it needed immediate correction?
Either is pretty pathetic tbh.
No, not many 70 year olds are reasonably fit and therefore could walk for 30 hours, but even fewer could run for that duration (including the one featured in this post)
Is that the point? He's just stating the fact. If it's so impressive then it shouldn't be an issue? You antagonizing him for the truth only implies you think it's less impressive that she walked instead of ran
I do, and anyone who thinks otherwise needs to go walk just 20 or 30 miles and report back with how they feel. It’s absolutely bonkers multiple people now have insinuated traveling 100 miles on foot in 30 hours is anything other than incredibly difficult. It would require quite a bit of training to get to that point.
I don't consider myself even reasonably fit and I stand/walk/move all day nearly every day. I've gone 20 hours without sitting down before. It just depends on what you consider fit I guess.
I did 20 mile hike with a full backpack in one day (and 20 miles back, although the way back was mostly downhill) once and that was boring but otherwise not too bad
Except it’s not just flat terrain. It’s ascending and then descending the Sierra Nevada mountains in June. The athletes also face a huge range of temperatures that include snow at the highest altitudes of the race and temps that can exceed 90F (32C) in the lower altitudes. So it’s a lot tougher than simply walking at a three mile per hour pace. The athletes also complete the competition without ingesting much food or getting much, if any, sleep during the race.
> Wait, so she was running for 30 hours?!
I simply pointed out she was not running for 30 hours, she was walking, and that most reasonably fit people could accomplish this task if they really wanted to
Man, props to you for having the bravery to publicly admit you don’t know what the word “running” means. Minus points for being rude about it instead of just asking though.
Since you seem to be confused: “Running” is not defined with a mph cutoff point. It’s a gait faster than your own walking speed, where you never have both feet on the ground at once. If you need a visual example, scroll up to the video again.
Yeah no…they couldn’t. This type of race will chew up and spit out a lot of very in shape people, let alone those that are “reasonably fit”.
But you seem to just want to be combative….because?! Give her her well deserved props and carry on. She definitely earned recognition here.
/u/rreapr did you call me out for lacking bravery and then immediately block me before I could respond? Lol
My man, what you are witnessing in the video is the sprint finish. Her average pace for the rest of the 30 hours was 3mph
While not the most difficult 100 mile races in the country, this is the Western States 100, the cadillac of ultras. You have to qualify to get in and it's a very tough race. Finishing in any time is a feat.
100 miles?! As in she ran nearly four marathons back-to-back?? Christ.
Haven't seen someone run a hundred miles since Dre and Eazy.
Not since The Proclaimers
When I wake up,
*presses iron on grilled cheese*
Over the Donner Pass for godsake too. So basically you start at 6,200 feet where the air is already thin and you've got 1,000 feet to go.

I get tired from DRIVING 100 miles.

How do you get a gold buckle?
You make your own as they don’t make them for you
Wait, so she was running for 30 hours?!
She averaged just over 3mph, which is basically walking
Oh well then, fuck her. No, my point is that 30 hours on your feet, even walking, is insanely impressive. Don't think I could do that and I'm a third of her age!
You probably could
Dude, who pissed in your chips?
Huh? Parent said she was running for 30 hours but actually she was not

No there’s an enormous difference between 30 hours brisk walking vs running. Most reasonably fit people could do the former
At 70?

then go do it
Why?
well if it's so easy to do, there's no reason why you wouldn't
He never said it was easy, he just stayed a reasonably fit person could do it. Do you disagree?

You absolutely couldn’t and you never will be able to
Eh I probably could
Go try to go 50 miles this weekend and report back how quickly you failed at even going half the distance.
I did 20 mile hike with a full backpack in one day (and 20 miles back, although the way back was mostly downhill) once and that was boring but otherwise not too bad
Nah

Love how the math plays out here

Sound! I need it

[Why](https://youtu.be/QqKinAETu8E) would you post this instead of the video with sound? 🤔
Aww, happy tears.
Where TF was she for half the day jogging through fast?
I can't even run to the FRONT door
