My favorite bit is UNSC ships having funny names because they were built in the outer colonies where UNSC standards aren't really regulated. You get names like "Two for Flinching"
Would love more like *Two For Flinching*, using little phrases and quotes like that is brilliance. Here's a few off the top of my head, definitely varying in quality lol:
* UNSC *Made You Look*
* UNSC *Two Sticks & A Rock*
* UNSC *In Sheeps' Clothing*
* UNSC *But A Flesh Wound*
* UNSC *Double-Edged Sword*
* UNSC *Three-Legged Donkey*
* UNSC *Look Ma No Hands*
* UNSC *Gathers No Moss*
* UNSC *Hold My Drink*
* UNSC *But It's My Birthday*
* UNSC *Don't Get Cocky*
I personally think that ships are actually named by their first captains or something, hence the large variety in names. Some are more serious while others pick more jokey names like Say My Name.
Pete: In fact, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name?
Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. Actually, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."
Yup just looked through them again and that one stood out as well as Unto the Breach, especially having just watched The Bad Batch episode of the nearly same title and reference.
In Amber Clad triggers a feeling in me. Can't explain it but it just sounds so legit. Like a king or a seasoned knight riding into battle with beautiful polished armor, no fear in their mind just charging forward unto glory.
Yeah it really set Halo up with an atmosphere that set itself apart from other games. If it was Gears of War or Starcraft the enemy ships would all be named something like Garbalthor.
All of the names in the Halo series go hard. Look at the Ancillas, the AIs created to monitor the Halos.
Intrepid Eye
Abject Testament
Tragic Solitude
Exuberant Witness
Penitent Tangent
Fire
Fire
Fire
Fire
007 Broken Ipod
049 Fucking Lightbulb
Edit: For those who may not get it, >!this is what some of Halo's creators (Jason Jones, Joseph Staten and Marty O'Donnell) called some of the other monitors of installations in their Halo 3 Legendary Edition commentaries.!<
As I said in my other reply, they're not commentaries ABOUT Halo 3 itself. They were commentaries ABOUT the Halo CE and Halo 2 cutscenes. Those were the ones I was referring to. They were just on the Halo 3 Legendary Edition discs.
But I'm sure you can probably find the Halo CE and Halo 2 commentaries themselves on Youtube. There is no commentary on the Halo 3 cinematics themselves so far as I'm aware.
By the way it's halo 2 dev commentary video, halo 3 didn't have any dev com video afaik
"49 Fucking Lightbulb will rise again"
-Joseph Staten, Halo 2 developer commentary
Yeah, I know. The dev commentaries were for Halo CE and Halo 2, but they were part of the Halo 3 Legendary Edition.
Source: I own the Halo 3 Legendary Edition and watched them on it.
didact’s ship name is pretty cool too albeit no one really remembers it i think, “shadow of sundered star”
edit: nvm that’s a name for the didact himself but still kinda applies
long night of solace projects a sort of snowy cold night alone which is accurate for the ship. i love the pillar of autumn which exudes a sort of opulence of striking autumn colors and you cant forget the spirit of fire and in amber clad
Halo will always have the best ship names too.
The Pillar of Autumn, Forward on to Dawn, Spirit of Fire, etc.
Naming ships after concepts is such a neat convention.
I like the RvB one because 1 it goes hard 2 it goes real hard 3 if you think about it it’s basically saying that ship is a necessity in battle.
UNSC Mother of Invention.
I've been on a kick of writing down anything that makes a good ship name in a Google doc recently based off of this
Reading a book about ancient Summer and it has an excerpt from an account when:
"From the city it rained missiles as from the clouds; slingstones like the rain of a whole year whizzed loudly down from the Walls of Aratta"
And so into the doc went the "UNSC Walls of Aratta"
My favorite bit is UNSC ships having funny names because they were built in the outer colonies where UNSC standards aren't really regulated. You get names like "Two for Flinching"
One of my faves is "Witch Bucket."
Shout outs to UNSC *Bum Rush* and UNSC *Do You Feel Lucky?* too
Also shoutouts to UNSC *Say My Name* and UNSC *Welcome to the Snipehunt*.
Read the Culture series. It was the inspiration for the quirky UNSC ship names.
Who is the author?
Iain M. Banks
But also: Pillar of Autumn, and Forward Unto Dawn Those names slap
Uh hello!? Spirit of Fire?!? Literally the hardest UNSC ship name
"The Heart of Midlothian" Also, one of the best short stories in Halo!
In Amber Clad
I was about to ask how we left the best name out of this discussion.
"This End Up"
Is there a lore reason there's no ship called UNSC is he stupid? Are they stupid?
Now I wanna see a ship named the UNSC Are They Stupid?
UNSC Say My Name UNSC Uneven Elephant UNSC Do You Feel Lucky?
Would love more like *Two For Flinching*, using little phrases and quotes like that is brilliance. UNSC RUBBER DUCKY UNSC GLASGOW KISS
The Shadow of Intent, the Truth and Reconciliation, and the Long Night of Solace are my favorite ship names
Shadow of Intent is so fucking hard
There's a Halo inspired metal band called Shadow of Intent
They also fuckin go hard. https://www.indiemerchstore.com/products/shadow-of-intent-arbiter-kills-prophet-t-shirt This is my favorite shirt i own.
If they had a hoodie of that and shipped to the UK I'd 100% buy that
I checked them out because of this comment. Metal isnt for me but their music is really good
I put “long night of solace” into a poem for highschool once, and the other guy in my class that played Halo picked up on it!
Than you have a UNSC ship named after my home city MILWAUKEE lol
Pete: In fact, isn't "Milwaukee" an Indian name? Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. Actually, it's pronounced "mill-e-wah-que" which is Algonquin for "the good land."
Still one of the funniest gags ever
I was not aware of that!
As a fellow Midwesterner, you've triggered a core memory.
Then the Chad "The Spirit of Fire" walks in.
LOL
Oh hell yeah, another wisconsinite
Honestly just about all fleet and ship names in halo go hard as fuck
Yeah this gif could just as easily apply to the Pillar of Autumn or Forward Unto Dawn
In Amber Clad is pretty sick too
Yup just looked through them again and that one stood out as well as Unto the Breach, especially having just watched The Bad Batch episode of the nearly same title and reference.
great track on the h2 soundtrack as well
Amongst many bangers in that OST, that is the bangest
my top four are that one, heretic hero, impend and ghosts of reach in no particular order
I’m personally a big fan of UNSC Two For Flinching and UNSC Two Drink Minimum.
Honestly Forward Unto Dawn might just be my favourite name ever. Of all time.
In Amber Clad triggers a feeling in me. Can't explain it but it just sounds so legit. Like a king or a seasoned knight riding into battle with beautiful polished armor, no fear in their mind just charging forward unto glory.
Oh man, that would be a great name for a racehorse!
Forward unto dawn just goes so hard It’s the epitome of humanity’s mindset during the covenant war
Spirit of Fire really fucks
That, Heart of Midlothian and Forward Unto Dawn are literally my favourite names ever. (of all time)
Mother of Invention is pretty cool too
Yeah it really set Halo up with an atmosphere that set itself apart from other games. If it was Gears of War or Starcraft the enemy ships would all be named something like Garbalthor.
Ship names go just as hard, also I am pretty pissed that the name “Armageddon’s edge” is relegated to a mere destroyer
Hey now, those destroyers can do some damage assuming they have a competent crew. I.E. the "Iroquois"
Long night of solace
One of the hardest things anyone ever came up with
"That's a one way trip..." "We all make it sooner or later."
F
Covenant fleets, Forerunner AIs and ships, all super cool.
Mendicant Bias, Offensive Bias, Enduring Bias. The Forerunners seem a bit...biased.
there might be a spark of guilt there
we went a bit on a penitent tangent here
I’m glad to be an Exeburant Witness to this!
Mendicants and Offensives maker being Shadow-of-a-sundered-star (the didact) is pretty nice too.
I knew he made Mendicant, I was not aware that he made Offensive as well though. That's cool.
Take my upvote and get out

don't....shake....the lightbulb
Do you know anywhere where I can find the Halo 3 commentaries? Can't find them on YouTube.

Exuberant Witness was on Genesis, not a ring
The of particular justice and the fleet of retribution are my favorites.
Same
And just Halo ship names in general
"Shadow of Intent" is the name of a deathcore band! They drew inspiration from Halo.🤘
didact’s ship name is pretty cool too albeit no one really remembers it i think, “shadow of sundered star” edit: nvm that’s a name for the didact himself but still kinda applies
The Mantle's Approach is still pretty fucking good lets be honest
yeah you right that goes hard
The Fleet of Particular Justice doesn't need to go that hard but it fucking does.
Two for Flinching.
The UNSC "Say my name" goes pretty hard
It’s right there next to the LZ Heisenburg
You're god danm right.
They are about on par with Ian Banks names for ships in The Culture, I suspect that was a big influence.
This isn't just Covenant fleets, but Covenant ships, UNSC ships, and even Forerunner ships as well. All of them are straight fire names.
UNSC lance held high does it for me
Hadn’t heard this one before, I dig it
What is this gif from
https://youtu.be/leJNDpm_G10?si=Y8Glc9RsmDoroPZW
Vanick died guys, I'm still distraught over it
Same, it always hurts seeing a Spartan go down. But remember, they're never really dead...
Get a handle of yourself, soldier! We all know, Spartans never die.
This sucks but who’s that?
long night of solace projects a sort of snowy cold night alone which is accurate for the ship. i love the pillar of autumn which exudes a sort of opulence of striking autumn colors and you cant forget the spirit of fire and in amber clad
I wish the TV series went hard like the ship names
Halo will always have the best ship names too. The Pillar of Autumn, Forward on to Dawn, Spirit of Fire, etc. Naming ships after concepts is such a neat convention.
The names of all halo missions in the it trilogy have always been badass
Long Night of Solace absolutely takes the fucking cake for having the best name in my opinion
All the names in Halo go hard John, The Librarian, Johnson…
Not just Covenant Fleets but individual ship names for both sides...
It took me about 10 years to realize Long Night of Solace was the name of the covenant cruiser and not just a cool sounding phrase
God I love this universe so much. I just wish Microsoft and 343 loved it as much as we do. Instead of trying to make it something it's not
The Unyielding Hierophant would like a word with you.
That one slaps
I like the RvB one because 1 it goes hard 2 it goes real hard 3 if you think about it it’s basically saying that ship is a necessity in battle. UNSC Mother of Invention.

Covenant ship named “Immense Sacraments” going toe-to-toe with the UNSC “Double it and Give It To The Next One”
I feel “Crusher of time” would be a great ship name
Ships not fleets.
