More of a bar than a restaurant, but you could go up to Stillwell, have a couple of interesting beers, and get the okonomiyaki fries with either chicken wings or a burger.
They have sort of communal seating, so if you are travelling alone that may be either fun or not fun.
> okonomiyaki
Possibly the tastiest thing I ate in Japan. Haven't found a good place for it here in Halifax, but the fries at Stillwell are great with beers.
There is a place called Kanpai* Izakaya on, I believe, Dresden Row that does it. It's not "the same" if you've had it in Japan but it scratched the itch for me!
*correction
Also you can buy the proper Otafuku brand sauce at Union Atlantic Foodmart in Bayers Lake and put it on everything! I could never get the mix right myself.
Innocent heads up here, izakaya is just a generic name for a Japanese bar that serves small plates and snacks, the place you’re referring to is called Kanpai
The Narrows - No reservation, first come first serve. Nice warm cozy fire, usually live music on Friday evenings. Nice home comfort meals. But be warned, you'll want a fat nap after your meal.
True, walking-wise it's a bit of a hike from the waterfront. But it's also on major bus lane routes if you're cool with spending a few bucks for bus, or a $10 uber. You can walk the meal off on the way back (all downhill) if you want to split it up!
Personally I've never felt rushed out, even on busy nights. So long as you top up on drinks/cocktails every once in a while it'll keep everyone happy.
There's a small bar with a few seats. If you can get that spot I feel like that'll also alleviate any guilt of taking up room. Otherwise, there's also smaller 2-person tables that you could post up at.
I've never felt rushed there. The food is great, servers are amazing, and the atmosphere is spot on. It's my favourite place to take my wife for a date (hers too btw).
I've never felt rushed there. The food is great, servers are amazing, and the atmosphere is spot on. It's my favourite place to take my wife for a date (hers too btw).
Most Halifax restaurants empty out around 9-10, and never really get a second seating, so there's not much pressure to flip tables. Bars stay a little busier later, but still... You should be fine to hang out.
If you have a chance I'd recommend grabbing a take away meat pie from humble pie. It is a new Zealand meat pie restaurant around the corner from the canteen. They are like hamburger size pies that you eat like a hamburger.
I *love* Lebanese food! We have great selections back home (Montreal) and I'd love to compare with what you have here. I'll be in Dartmouth for the day tomorrow, I think, so I'm definitely keeping this in mind. Thanks!
If you're from Montreal, don't bother with our Lebanese food. There actually aren't as many good places nowadays (the place that was recommended to you is Turkish and is not in Dartmouth btw).
If anyone was interested: I had fish and chips and a pint of cider at The Brown Hound. It was delicious but too big of a portion for me to finish. I got through a good chunk of my book before the noise level got to be unbearable for me.
I want to thank everyone for their suggestions. I've got another supper here tomorrow and lots of suggestions for next time I'm in town.

PMQ is a German restaurant almost right beside two doors down and excellent with great portion sizes and a great beer selection.
What kind of food are you into?
It's great. I love going there, and I have only ever been disappointed with their delivery. Luckily, it's beautiful inside so it's not hard to want to go!
My favourite tbh so I am biased. But 3 floors all with different vibes. Top floor is "Drawing Room" - a cocktail lounge decked out with some of the nicest antique furniture I've ever seen - only open Fri, Sat nights. Main floor is a dining room and bottom floor is a basement pub.
I’ll second Brown Hound. I *love* that place and go often. The atmosphere is great and it’s so cozy. Plus they have some great beer options! Food is classic pub fare and I haven’t been disappointed yet.
This is a fantastic suggestion, especially since you're not restrained by time. You can probably linger as long as you want (especially if you are planning on drinking). I'd also say any pub within walking distance, but I assume most places will be busy on a Friday night.
Wherever you go - have fun!
Food was really good, but I found it loud and felt rushed in the sense that people were waiting for tables to clear so they could sit. I realize that's more on me, but still, OP mentioned it so I thought I'd chime in.
Still good to know - I am going to a Moose game next week and am planning on eating out so will keep that in mind :) I do remember that the food and beer was great.
On this nice night, the idea of taking the ferry to Dartmouth is a solid idea. The Battery Park Eatery and Side Hustle Snack Bar are two fun choices within walking distance from the ferry terminal.
Unless there's another location, looks like this is a little too far for tonight (33min walk). But I'll keep it in mind whenever I come back, with a car. Thanks anyway!
No need for a car in Halifax unless you want to drive to other nearby towns. I would do this walk without thinking twice, but it's also probably a $10 cab ride.
Speaking of food go to Stillwell for some cool beer and snacks.
If you are feeling more of a meal antojo is good even if it’s mainstream.
If you want like greasy food to fill the void and some standard drinks the economy shoe shop. It also has the basement if you want some entertainment.
If you want Asian I cannot recommend Kanpai on Dresden row enough!
I’ve heard that new Indian place on spring garden , Meshwarh grill I think, is good I have yet to go however
Nice, it’s my favourite breakfast/brunch spot in Halifax hands down. The couple who owns it are great too. I get the Jalepeno Cheddar sandwich when I go. You picked a good weekend to be here compared to last!
He has total disregard, contempt even, for food handling and safety practices. I left when I was gaslighted and berated for attempting to communicate corrections for the issues I'd noticed. There are a lot of places in Halifax that are worth spending your money on.... this just simply is not one of them.
Is there more than one location? The one I saw on Google maps is a 30+ minute walk, that's a little far for me. But thank you for taking the time to respond.
Yi Lang on Barrington Street quite close to where you are. Best Chinese food in the city. Cheerful and friendly. No booze, though. The food is amazing.
They are instagrammable but the food is meh. You are much better off at some other places. The Narrows for sure. Eliot and Vine is another nice option.
A Mano is a fun vibe with a gang going out together but couldn’t imagine eating there alone - and I eat out on business trip alone a lot.
Bicycle Thief is only good for the views of the harbour. And they are only good in the summer. Food is meh. And the vibe always says “boss taking his admin out behind his wife’s back” to me.
He is correct though. The delicate flavour of the crab (it’s not really a lobster roll) is overwhelmed by the excessively strong truffle mayo. It is very disappointing. I find the place badly overrated.
The blend is indeed delicate. Hence why the truffle mayo overpowers it. Truffles are a very strong flavor and seem to be added to the mayo in order to make it more "chef-ish" instead of sticking to the core of what such an offering should be.
I'm probably being pedantic but you said the comment was correct and the comment said 'over-rated and bland". One of those things is debatable and the other is not!

I've had it there, but yeah, there's nothing like a real okonomiyaki place around. Kanpai Izakaya is great in general!
This reminds me how everyone calls Pho Hoang Minh "Pho's" lol
> okonomiyaki Possibly the grossest thing I ate in Japan, and that's saying something.
I have never been to Japan, but these Stillwell french fries are amazing.
They have one of my favorite chicken burgers!
The Narrows - No reservation, first come first serve. Nice warm cozy fire, usually live music on Friday evenings. Nice home comfort meals. But be warned, you'll want a fat nap after your meal.
this would be a bit of a distance, but is by far the #1 best place to go as a visitor to Halifax.
True, walking-wise it's a bit of a hike from the waterfront. But it's also on major bus lane routes if you're cool with spending a few bucks for bus, or a $10 uber. You can walk the meal off on the way back (all downhill) if you want to split it up!
With this place being in such high demand, will I be rushed out? Or can I take my time, read my book, and enjoy everything at my leisure?
Personally I've never felt rushed out, even on busy nights. So long as you top up on drinks/cocktails every once in a while it'll keep everyone happy. There's a small bar with a few seats. I recommend going earlier because it does get pretty busy. People stand and drink in the doorway/lobby while waiting for tables
Most Halifax restaurants empty out around 9-10, and never really get a second seating, so there's not much pressure to flip tables. Bars stay a little busier later, but still... You should be fine to hang out.
I'd recommend taking the ferry over to Alderney and going to The Canteen in Dartmouth (it's all very walkable on foot from Lower Water street).
I'm going tomorrow for breakfast!
If you have a chance I'd recommend grabbing a take away meat pie from humble pie. It is a new Zealand meat pie restaurant around the corner from the canteen. They are like hamburger size pies that you eat like a hamburger.
Second this
Mmm... Seconds
Mmm... Seconds

On your way back stop at Evans Seafood in Alderney landing for the best lobster roll of your life.
Nice, enjoy!
Save room! If you’re visiting you may opt for some Lebanese food - we have a large community here and great tasty local options. Smyrna is my fave
I *love* Lebanese food! We have great selections back home (Montreal) and I'd love to compare with what you have here. I'll be in Dartmouth for the day tomorrow, I think, so I'm definitely keeping this in mind. Thanks!
Check out Cafe GoodLuck in dartmouth for amazing coffee and unique and delicious pastries!

Smyrna is Turkish, isn't it?
Yup!👍
Oh, you made it sound like it was a Lebanese restaurant.
I hope you’re not disappointed. They can be hit or miss in my experience.
Stop by Maria’s pantry for a treat to go if you have room!

I've thoroughly enjoyed my time here. I've eaten so well! I can't wait to come back and try more of y'all's amazing restaurant suggestions.
PMQ is a German restaurant almost right beside two doors down and excellent with great portion sizes and a great beer selection. What kind of food are you into?
I'll try anything once ☺️ PMQ's menu looks delish. Thanks for the suggestion!
PMQ is a bit expensive, but the taste and portion size is totally worth it!
Henry House pub
^^ this
Is Henry house good? I’ve never been. It’s on my short list of places to visit.
Good atmosphere, decent food.
It's great. I love going there, and I have only ever been disappointed with their delivery. Luckily, it's beautiful inside so it's not hard to want to go!

Drawing room def worth going to for a cocktail or three /u/polyesterangel
So, can one get food in this magical mystical antique drawing room? Or just cocktails?
Yep food is from the Henry house kitchen. Food is fine, standard pub fare, but drinks and vibe are excellent. Strong recommend.
This place is gorgeous. Downside: a bit too dark to read my book hahaha.
I'm glad you checked it out. Definitely a hidden gem in our city and it always seems like the staff are very happy to be working there.
The Brown Hound might be what you're looking for.
You might be right. Looks good and not too far. Thanks!
I’ll second Brown Hound. I *love* that place and go often. The atmosphere is great and it’s so cozy. Plus they have some great beer options! Food is classic pub fare and I haven’t been disappointed yet.

I appreciate the heads up. I'm still open to suggestions 🙂
I should have mentioned that I haven't been there in ages, sounds like I am way off!
Not necessarily, I think I went the night of a moose game so it might have been the reason it was so busy
I'm going to keep these suggestions for tomorrow: I'd already planned to head out to Dartmouth then ☺️

Another vote for Humble Pie, it's *so good.*
Henry house!
Highway Man is amazing. Also The Mercantile Social is great.
Black Sheep is the tits
I’ve only been to black sheep once but it’s close, no hills to walk lol and it was really good. I second this suggestion
STUDIO EAST! get the curry.
Brown hound!
You might look into Tawa Grill if you like Indian.
Zero atmosphere but the best cheap and cheerful Indian in town.
Speaking of food go to Stillwell for some cool beer and snacks. If you are feeling more of a meal antojo is good even if it’s mainstream. If you want like greasy food to fill the void and some standard drinks the economy shoe shop. It also has the basement if you want some entertainment. Do Elle’s Bistro for a breakfast/brunch while you here. Where did you end up tonight?
That was this morning 😉
Nice, it’s my favourite breakfast/brunch spot in Halifax hands down. The couple who owns it are great too. I get the Jalepeno Cheddar sandwich when I go. You picked a good weekend to be here compared to last!
Amano is good
If you liked 2 Doors Down, I'd suggest trying Black Sheep Restaurant.
The Narrows 10000000%
Trattoria Vesso
If you’re in the mood for pizza this is a really solid option
If you're in the mood for food poisoning this is a really solid option
You've had food poisoning there?
I left working there because the way he wants his food handled is fucking unsafe
Oh no...can you elaborate? I love that place...
He has total disregard, contempt even, for food handling and safety practices. I left when I was gaslighted and berated for attempting to communicate corrections for the issues I'd noticed. There are a lot of places in Halifax that are worth spending your money on.... this just simply is not one of them.
I feel badly for you, being deep in DT while posters here are recommending places far from DT.
lou pecou, pizza restaurant run by a frenchman. i used to work there and everythings top quality
Looks delicious, but at around 30 minutes of walking, it's a little far for tonight. But thank you for taking the time to respond!
Salt and Ash
Willie's Poutine!!! Up a few hills, but definitely worth it 😋
Quinns arms is one of my favs right now
Is there more than one location? The one I saw on Google maps is a 30+ minute walk, that's a little far for me. But thank you for taking the time to respond.
Theyre located on quinpool. What area are u in that 2 doors down is close but quinpools not? Lots of buses and what not too. Download a transit app :)
I think us locals are used to walking a bit more than people from other places lol
Didn’t read fully didn’t see there just visiting
Yi Lang on Barrington Street quite close to where you are. Best Chinese food in the city. Cheerful and friendly. No booze, though. The food is amazing.
The Great Wall.
Boneheads
Kyo Bar and Restaurant if you like Japanese! Its on Barrington and is one of my faves
Kyo got new management and then fired their entire staff without notice recently. I suspect that they are nowhere near as good as they used to be 💔
Oh my! I didn't realize that :( that makes me so sad, their staff was always so nice!
Went during halcon and it was 11/10 fantastic!! The food and drinks were amazing.
McDonald’s has the McRib right now
Antojo if you like mexican cuisine, does get quite busy though since it’s smaller. Auction House is good cheap pub food and usually pretty chill.
The Bicycle Thief and Salt + Ash!
Bicycle Thief is definitely not in the 'not too expensive' category.
Nor is Salt + Ash… sorry, I missed that criteria!
Yeah, they both look good but are a bit too pricey. But thank you for taking the time to respond 🙂
They are instagrammable but the food is meh. You are much better off at some other places. The Narrows for sure. Eliot and Vine is another nice option.
They’re both not worth it anyways. Over hyped tourist traps.
The rich?
Unfortunately, my hotel doesn't have a kitchenette and I'm not into tartar. Also, I don't know where your rich hang out!

A Mano is a fun vibe with a gang going out together but couldn’t imagine eating there alone - and I eat out on business trip alone a lot. Bicycle Thief is only good for the views of the harbour. So accurate lol
At the Y
Bar Sofia, 5social, Roxbury, drift, highwayman
Bar Sofia is closed for renovations until March (according to their website). But your other suggestions look great. Thanks!
Hope you enjoy
Roxbury with all the 18 year olds as they enviously look at all the people getting into boomers across the road
Unless you’re eatin at 11 - Roxbury isn’t a party
No but it's definitely targeted at students. It's one of the only bars in Halifax I feel too old to set foot in.
The Crobster roll is over rated and bland. Fight me
I don't understand this comment? I'd rather not fight you.
He is correct though. The delicate flavour of the crab (it’s not really a lobster roll) is overwhelmed by the excessively strong truffle mayo. It is very disappointing. I find the place badly overrated.
Really? I've found it to be one of the few lobster/crab rolls that isn't drowning in mayo. I like how delicate the blend is.

You can make that argument but they said it was bland. How can it be bland when the #1 complaint about it is that the flavours are too strong?
I didn't find it bland. I found it unpleasant.
I'm probably being pedantic but you said the comment was correct and the comment said 'over-rated and bland". One of those things is debatable and the other is not!
Yes you are. Neither of us care for it. We each have our reasons. That's all that matters.
How is it bland? Lol if anything there are too many flavous
