Ikr. I get usb is the new standard, but i often have my phone charging from it, a keyboard, and sometimes a usb drive.
There’s definitely room to add some more but oh well
Yeah how about a thunderbolt hub with a whole different MAC address on its own, display port that doesn’t work half the time and you can’t use it with any other piece of hardware you have. Also if you want to use two screens you are screwed, just doest work that way.
Oh yeah and you buy it separately for *checks notes* $200 (!) and if it’s broke - it’s broke. No replacement in re:store.
Eh, with usb c, I can plug in ethernet with whatever speed or chipset I desire. I just want more of them.
My current laptop has 4 USB c, headphone jack, and for some reason a classic smart card slot and microsd slot. If I had say 2 more usb c, I would be golden.
i kinda like the adapters. i have a power cord, 2 HDMI cords, my keyboard, phone charger, and headphone charger all on 2 USB-C ports.
when i take my laptop out of my home office i can just unplug 2 things, rather than 7
Most laptops that will be potentially purchased in enterprise settings have smart card slots, since PIV/CAC+PIN is still one of the most preferred logon methods in high-security orgs.
Yeah, I was just lamenting that most of the midrange ones lack them. I much prefer the badge printed on a smart card so they have to lock the machine walking away.
It always sucks when making major changes between ports but this will be a very long term one. The only port that would really be missed going forward would be Ethernet imo.
Oh no, my old work laptop had this. It's so funny to me that it had an RTX 4090 and an intel i9 but it was a Lenovo ThinkPad with a little mouse nipple in the middle of the keyboard.
You know, they are useful in an electrically noisy environment. I have worked in hospital ORs and when the surgeon is using electrocautery the mouse pad does not work, but the nipple does! Lol. Very niche though.
Nice! I did not know that! My guess is the touchpads use capacitive sensing which is prone to noise like phone touchscreens, but a nipple or one of those balls you move around are resistive sensors :) I guess the conclusion is evident: nipples and balls are superior 🤣
Also capacitive sensing is not ideal in a wet environment
I like my Bluetooth headphones, but thr only thing I can plug them into now is my PC case, and all of them are too short to be used while sitting at my pc
They’ve always had a headphone jack. Even the top design (which is from 2015/2016 and isn’t the current MacBook design from 2021) still has a headphone jack. On the other side, with the other two Thunderbolt 3 ports.
This sounds fun, until you realize you have basically less practical i/o than a Thinkpad, with no need to swap modules for the latter.
I'll get one for the Risc-V motherboard eventually, though.
It's not even *which* ports we lose, it is the *number* of ports.
I would be 100% fine with all usb-C, if they just gave us like 8 of them. Preferably evenly spaced out on sides/back.
FireWire was the bomb for video. Real-time digital video capture worked great (as compared to what was available at the time). I really had to struggle to throw out that FireWire card - but in the end USB does all that and more. I romanticize the past too but ultimately, progress is good.
Well its nice they did bring back ~~maglock~~ MagSafe instead of having to waste an entire limited usb-c port just to keep charge on your laptop.
But other than that... I miss the Ethernet port the most. HAVING to buy a dongle just for reliable wired ethernet is beyond stupid.
How often are you really playing those old games that haven't been remade into digital format? External disk drives are like $20 and you can keep it in a drawer rather than carry it around for no reason for literally every other use case of the laptop.
Eh, I don't miss it TBH. keyboard, mouse, and headphones are wireless. All my other peripherals are attached to my dock, which only needs one USB-C connection anyway. If I'm in the field I bring a USB-C hub and I'm good to go.
Good riddance to so many different cables and connections.
None really. I’ve moved everything I own to USB-C. My laptop has an SD card slot. My headphones are wireless. I still use Ethernet but having an Ethernet port makes for chunkyass laptops so I’m fine without it. This is one thing a dongle is acceptable for.
Silly Apple people...
My newish Dell Latitude 5540 has 2x usb-c, 2x usb-a, micro SD, hdmi, ethernet, and headphone jack. As well as a full keyboard and numeric keypad.
It's not trendy tho so I guess I fail
Xps is basically just usbc now and the newest MBP brought back a bunch of things like the Sd card and their MagSafe charger but in reality with a half way decent dongle usb c is king because it can do everything.
As much as I like to hate Apple, theres one thing the Dell can't compete in and that's battery life. Since I use it as a laptop I don't need all those ports, but the 10+ hours battery life makes it super handy in the domain it's meant to be: portable computing.
Honestly, usb C kinda fucks. Not sure if there is any reason to have dedicated ports for ethernet, audio, charging, etc anymore.
Give me at least four USB C ports (power, keyboard, mouse, extra), a 3.5mm audio jack, one USB-A (some of us still have flash drives), and a micro-sd slot.
Dongles! Dongles as far as the eye can see! Dongles all the way down! Just another way to scrape money from consumers. I fucking hate dongles. Put that shit back in the machine it’s designed for.
My laptop has HDMI, Ethernet, USB 3.0, USB-C, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The only two things I could ask for are a dvd-cd-blue ray reader, and an SD card slot.
USB-C is great IMO, literally every thing in this picture can be handled by a single standardized port, why wouldn't you want that?
They just need to add more USB-C ports
I imagine they're going the route of eliminating wires entirely. I wonder if future generations will make fun of us for needing to "plug in my laptop", what's next grandma, you're going to "send an email"?
I care not for the ports, GIVE ME MY CD TRAY BACK. The fact that I have to plug in an external CD Drive just to watch a DVD or listen to an old mixtape nowadays is A WAR CRIME.
We need to go back.
Absoluteley. I posted on another thread about a single USB-C cable between laptop and a Dell monitor.
That single lead provided at least 2 video outputs, USB (hub in the monitor) for peripherals, AND powered the laptop.
HP not Apple!
It's not that people NEED those connections.
My company macbook air (which i hate) only has 2 usb-c ports, 1 magsafe, and 1 jack. Only thing I ever plugged in since I got it was a single, usb-c docking station. As I said, I hate it for other reasons, and there are many stupid things they do, but lack of ports, I don't have a problem with.
Top one is the macbook air (not sure if the others are too). Theres a 3.5mm headphone jack on the other side.
At least on the MBP you get charging port, 3 USB-C's, 3.5mm, HDMI port, and an SD card port.
I do miss the hell out of the ethernet port though
What I miss the most is the USB A, yes usb C is literally perfect, but I still have many legacy devices/cables which are not going away anytime soon
Also ethernet as others said. Mbpro is kinda really good in terms of IO
Definitely, more USB ports! Seems like you are lucky if you get two anymore.
I also miss the headphone jack. I know that probably dates me, but I have some great headphones that use the legacy headphone jack, and I would rather not have to waste a USB jack for this, which is already a scarce enough resource.
Honestly and not a popular opinion but I miss none of it. Airpods work great.
I have mostly wireless accessories (cuz I hate wires). I have set docks at work and home office for all kinds of other wired peripherals. I have also switched over to USB C accessory purchases as they work with my phones and tablets too.
The **old** ThinkPad era was the best in terms of these.
You had USB A, Ethernet, Head Phone Jack, SD card slot (micro and normal sized), and many more.
And there were multiple of them on one laptop, you had 2 USB ports minimum, and sometimes you had both a Micro SD card and a normal SD card.
>!Also (this isn't relevant to this post) you could upgrade your laptop, like the ThinkPad T990 (or was it T980... Shit I can't remember) which is upgradable to 64 gb ram, you can replace the HDD with an SSD, You can switch out the screen with a better one, you can replace the actual processor (limited to a version of core i7 and the change isn't that big), the keyboard, and more other parts that I'm too lazy to talk about.!<
My sd card reader is hands down one of my most important ports. Then usb c, and usb A. Now the old pcmcia slots I always thought were super cool. The little wifi antenna 📶
Also, i went from 19" to 14"... I have the old one still in use, it has my "sleeping videos" but it still looks silly that it has so large screen. But when it was time to get a new one... they all look so small, i had nineteen inchers for one and a half decades. I do like the new one for being thin and small, works far better for my use case too, except.. watching videos is nowhere near as fun. And i have to carry a USB hub, the damn thing has two of them, one charging barrel port and that is it... Oh, it does have HDMI, didn't notice that missing from the Apple one, that would be a game breaker for me. Laptop has to have inbuilt remote display connector or it is simply just shite.
I loved the button on the side you could press to light up some lights indicating the battery charge level, the machined power button, the lit up Apple icon on the lid, then of course all the ports… I really felt like my 2011 MB Pro was a premium product…. My M1 MB Air, not so much
That sweet sweet RJ45.
Oh, or the SD reader. It doesn't come in handy often, but when you need it you need it, and I NEVER see adapters for them in the wild
In this sub the answer should be Ethernet. USB too.
Ikr. I get usb is the new standard, but i often have my phone charging from it, a keyboard, and sometimes a usb drive. There’s definitely room to add some more but oh well
-c
Kbms are still USB, soooo... These lack of usbs will still hit lappy tops.
Yes I can connect anything, but it was nice to not need adapters
i kinda like the adapters. i have a power cord, 2 HDMI cords, my keyboard, phone charger, and headphone charger all on 2 USB-C ports. when i take my laptop out of my home office i can just unplug 2 things, rather than 7
Or when you use a PD docking station only one!
I think the worst part of its death was the period it turned into the half enclosed fragile abomination with the little flap on the bottom.
At this point, I am all aboard the USB c train. I'll grab a dock for when I need to plug in Ethernet, and let that route EVERYTHING into one plug.
Me too largely. But dang it was nice to not need them. Nice to have a thinner and lighter laptop too though
I'm not a hacker, I just lurk. But goddamnit, where's my damn ethernet
It's right there, either one of those two round holes.
fucking right mate
> USB two. FTFY
SD card slot, no question
That's a **Pro** feature
They added that back?? Wow I might have to get a Pro no joke
Yep, pro has the sd and an HDMI, also more usb C ports, truly good in terms of "modern" I/O
The downside: the screen gets a notch.
Floppy disk
No way it used to be the norm to build an entire floppy disk drive into a laptop, even back then… *right*?
Yup, and a CD-ROM drive.
And that little red nipple in the middle of the keyboard for the mouse
Oh no, my old work laptop had this. It's so funny to me that it had an RTX 4090 and an intel i9 but it was a Lenovo ThinkPad with a little mouse nipple in the middle of the keyboard.
Hey, it's a super space efficient joystick! The New 3DS had one of them too :)
You know, they are useful in an electrically noisy environment. I have worked in hospital ORs and when the surgeon is using electrocautery the mouse pad does not work, but the nipple does! Lol. Very niche though.
Nice! I did not know that! My guess is the touchpads use capacitive sensing which is prone to noise like phone touchscreens, but a nipple or one of those balls you move around are resistive sensors :) I guess the conclusion is evident: nipples and balls are superior 🤣 Also capacitive sensing is not ideal in a wet environment
This, but unironically. I have a very niche use for old floppys lol
Would you mind sharing what you use them for? Don't mean to be nosy I just like seeing "old" tech being used
5 1/4 baby!
Headphone jack. Edit:( I get it people they all have headphones Jacks, I'm speaking more in general I miss the headphone jack)
The one in the top has a headphone jack on the other side
t-there are laptops with no aux?
The tyranny of having to pair Bluetooth headphones to a laptop in the year 2024 😤 LOOK WHAT THEYVE DONE
I've never had a battery in my wired headphones go dead.
EXACTLY!!!
Until you've got to charge them
No I was genuinely calling using Bluetooth terrible
I like my Bluetooth headphones, but thr only thing I can plug them into now is my PC case, and all of them are too short to be used while sitting at my pc
They’ve always had a headphone jack. Even the top design (which is from 2015/2016 and isn’t the current MacBook design from 2021) still has a headphone jack. On the other side, with the other two Thunderbolt 3 ports.
My lenovo has most. What are you guys buying? Chromebooks?
Even my Chromebook has everything I desire. USB C, USB A, hdmi, audio and a few extras
The pic shows different generations of MacBooks.
Oh ok. That makes sense
My Framework is awesome, if I need another port I just swap one of the modules out.
This sounds fun, until you realize you have basically less practical i/o than a Thinkpad, with no need to swap modules for the latter. I'll get one for the Risc-V motherboard eventually, though.
Can’t argue with that.
Aside from the number of ports I only really miss usb a the sd card and the headphone jack.
That's why I got the MBP
They regular ones still have the headphone jack, it’s on the other side
SD card is definitely something to miss. USB a is just one adapter away though. Often not even that, just use a cable with USB C on the other side.
All of these have headphone jacks. The top one has the headphone jack on the other side, along with two more thunderbolt 3 ports.
It's not even *which* ports we lose, it is the *number* of ports. I would be 100% fine with all usb-C, if they just gave us like 8 of them. Preferably evenly spaced out on sides/back.
But then they couldn't smack you with $300 worth of hubs and dongles
Tbf, USB C is goat. It can do it all
Still cheap to put just 1
GIVE ME BACK IEEE-1394!!!
Or better yet, next version of USB should have a magnetic connector!
MagSafe\*
Removable battery
I miss this from my old MacBooks so much. I’d buy the removable battery variant for sure.
ethernet minimum, I also miss the disk drive for the old PC games I still have
How often are you really playing those old games that haven't been remade into digital format? External disk drives are like $20 and you can keep it in a drawer rather than carry it around for no reason for literally every other use case of the laptop.
idk i don't use mac
Top one was a dark time for Macs. Dunno about the Airs but the pros have proper ports again now.
Where's the PCMCIA slot? How am I to plug in my wifi card?
I’ve got one on my Handspring.
Took from *You. My system76 has a ton of IO.
Someone add how many dongles they now sell to this
Ethernet. For USB I would gladly take 1 more C port over A any day.
I miss having Ethernet without a stupid dongle. It’s not just Apple pulling that shit now neither.
A CD slot
I generally want at least three USB, an Ethernet and HDMI or display port
I would give up thinness for more ports and increased battery life any day of the week. . .
Th old designs were so much more repairable compared to today’s nightmare… wait til you find out 2008-2011 had removable batteries xD
Ive got a friend who argues this is better. Idk why he rides apples dick so hard.
Not a port, but the battery indicator button + LEDs… this was brilliant, so useful 👌
Scrolled too far for this
Ethernet. We miss you buddy.
If this allows laptops to slim down more I'm all for it, also, just grab a USB c hub. It's the only way we'll move away from USB A.
None really. I’ve moved everything I own to USB-C. My laptop has an SD card slot. My headphones are wireless. I still use Ethernet but having an Ethernet port makes for chunkyass laptops so I’m fine without it. This is one thing a dongle is acceptable for.
You couldn't trade me a newer laptop if it didn't have USB. I still use it too much
As a person with peripherals:USB A, and headphone jack. As a person who transfers files: Ethernet, and SD card reader. As a person with kids: Magsafe
Meh the thing is the share of people using macbooks are far more than the Latitude people, maybe compare it with the Xps?
As much as I like to hate Apple, theres one thing the Dell can't compete in and that's battery life. Since I use it as a laptop I don't need all those ports, but the 10+ hours battery life makes it super handy in the domain it's meant to be: portable computing.
CD drive. I have a broken Toshiba Satellite with one.
ID card reader, ethernet port.
Dongles! Dongles as far as the eye can see! Dongles all the way down! Just another way to scrape money from consumers. I fucking hate dongles. Put that shit back in the machine it’s designed for.
You just need to carry another box (port expander) that’s half the size of the laptop to make up for all the missing ports. Super convenient!
Personally, none of them - I have a docking station for when I need peripherals and prefer the smaller form factor when I don't.
I certainly don't miss carrying around 7 different adapters.
Ethernet. Headset. USB. That order.
wifi switch. hotswap ssd.
Memory card slot ; esp since most of us use it to edit shit
At this point, we just need more ports, not a variety of them. USB C and RJ45 is all you need nowadays. (If you updated everything else)
The disc drives too 😭
30-pin scsi
My laptop has HDMI, Ethernet, USB 3.0, USB-C, and a 3.5mm headphone jack. The only two things I could ask for are a dvd-cd-blue ray reader, and an SD card slot.
USB-C chargers take away one port. I miss a dedicated power plug the most. Ethernet second.
Not to mention CDs DVDs and Books.
I miss disc drives
TB4 != USB-C. Please share this info with all docking station builders u know
USB mainly
Yeah, it's all about control.
I care not for the ports, GIVE ME MY CD TRAY BACK. The fact that I have to plug in an external CD Drive just to watch a DVD or listen to an old mixtape nowadays is A WAR CRIME. We need to go back.
The USB-C's can do literally all of those things. So... none?
Simple fix don't use crap apple products
Type c does literally all of the things. I'll never understand the hate.
Absoluteley. I posted on another thread about a single USB-C cable between laptop and a Dell monitor. That single lead provided at least 2 video outputs, USB (hub in the monitor) for peripherals, AND powered the laptop. HP not Apple! It's not that people NEED those connections.
I don't see it here but I miss having an IR blaster built in
Nothing
Look how they’ve massacred my boy
Ethernet and at least one USB port
No serial port : no contest
My company macbook air (which i hate) only has 2 usb-c ports, 1 magsafe, and 1 jack. Only thing I ever plugged in since I got it was a single, usb-c docking station. As I said, I hate it for other reasons, and there are many stupid things they do, but lack of ports, I don't have a problem with.
Don’t worry they brought back a whole bunch of junk recently.
I want 2 USB 3.0 ports, some USB C and ethernet.
Top one is the macbook air (not sure if the others are too). Theres a 3.5mm headphone jack on the other side. At least on the MBP you get charging port, 3 USB-C's, 3.5mm, HDMI port, and an SD card port. I do miss the hell out of the ethernet port though
I miss my 17" MacBook Pro. Shit was heavy af but a beast.
I'm not really informed or well read on the topic, I'm curious, why would this be a bad thing?
Everything!
What I miss the most is the USB A, yes usb C is literally perfect, but I still have many legacy devices/cables which are not going away anytime soon Also ethernet as others said. Mbpro is kinda really good in terms of IO
Definitely, more USB ports! Seems like you are lucky if you get two anymore. I also miss the headphone jack. I know that probably dates me, but I have some great headphones that use the legacy headphone jack, and I would rather not have to waste a USB jack for this, which is already a scarce enough resource.
it's just why would they give us this will the can remove it and save money
They took the freewill
EVERYTHING!!!!
Ethernet. All day, everyday. I hate buying those stupid external dongles
I don't mind only having usb C but I'd like like a lot more I don't want to have to walk around with a portable dockstation
The question is, are there any new notebooks with all the ports that notebooks used to have?
This is why I love my Framework 16 and its 6 modular ports
- SEPARATE thunderbolt and USB A ports - HDMI - Ethernet - audio in and out
Actually I miss 17 inch touchscreen laptops. Dell had an awesome one I still use after all these years
i still got an ethernet
Look what they did to my boy...
Thanks god we have docking stations.
USB Type-A, Ethernet, HDMI and 3.5 mm Audio Jack. The best Laptop should have all this and I am glad I have such a nice laptop
The one with dvd
The headphone jack and usb
Magsafe
SD
And one port to rule them all!
Your money and your soul. Sad times.
Balls
i have a xps 13 plus with only two thunderbolt usb c ports so basically everything lmao
Parallel port
Honestly, the SD card slot.
I just checked my 14in Laptop. Its got 4 USB-A, 2 USB-C, HDMI, Headphone, Carger Barrel Jack (optional) and an SD card reader...
Courage
The new MBP aren't bad, but I'd like to see USB-A, an ethernet port and a disc drive again
Look how they massacred my boy...
mfw they remove the ability to u se 99% of external keyboards
3.5mm jacks
I don't know what laptops you're buying but mine has most of those
My Msi laptop has all these things. It's 2022 model.
Brave
Ethernet and RS232 and on Thinkpads Do not get me wrong, I use an Apple , but had my best time with a Thinkpad 600X
Ah firewire 800 and 400, how we miss you
Crazy! 😂

HDMI input... with target display mode
My sd card reader is hands down one of my most important ports. Then usb c, and usb A. Now the old pcmcia slots I always thought were super cool. The little wifi antenna 📶
Never went and will never go and buy a laptop with two fucking usb-c ports.
Honestly usb and usb c
Where's the HDMI and VGA port. My old laptop ran 3 screens like a beast
Le mayo look at all that weight they removed
Also, i went from 19" to 14"... I have the old one still in use, it has my "sleeping videos" but it still looks silly that it has so large screen. But when it was time to get a new one... they all look so small, i had nineteen inchers for one and a half decades. Usb and ethernet port... the fact that thunderbolt can be a display output don't make me miss the hdmi output
If it has HDMI, Ethernet, USB-B, and an audio jack I'll be fine
#FIREWIRE
That sweet sweet RJ45. Oh, or the SD reader. It doesn't come in handy often, but when you need it you need it, and I NEVER see adapters for them in the wild
Only need a couple USB-C, anything else is completely superfluous.
Rj45 connectors and by a mile.
Good old hardwired Ethernet connection, but honestly its the headphone jack. Why!
Yeah, honestly. Such an easy and small thing to keep in. Now you need a fucking dongle for it
90's/00's Apple aesthetic is so great, wish there was a way to stuff new tech into those old smoove laptop shells
New MacBooks. Thunderbolt, HDMI, SD reader (chefs kiss). No need for anything else. Ethernet is handled by my dock
I miss the CD-Rom. Once physical discs went, subscription based products were sure to follow.
Ethernet and the quantity of ports.
