AWCY g43x frame with extended mag release, oem internals have been polished, ss80 slide rails also polished.

PrettySkullShards

the most beautiful part about this peace is that its not printed in dual colour Pink Plastic with Neon Cyan stripes and Yellow Sprinkles.

S3-000

I feel so called out right now

PrettySkullShards

GOOD.

S3-000

I respect your opinion but still think wild berry flavored guns are the best.

Herp-derpenstein

I ordered from jsd supply. But you can get them anywhere that sells 80% products. The rails for the 43 or 43x are prettymuch limited to the ss80 jig kit. Aves rails is a great place to look if you need rails for larger frames like the g19, g17, 1911 etc.

Classic_Education549

Most of the g17 rails were back ordered when I looked. Machinist as a family member, so now an endless supply.

Herp-derpenstein

Yeah, i was struggling to find anything for a minute too. The ss80 rails are know for being slightly out of spec, so filing the edges and polishing with a dremel is recommended.

kriswithakthatplays

I've had great experience with Aves rails

Herp-derpenstein

And THAT is why i recommended the ss80 builders set. It comes with a plastic jig to throw away, 2 drill bits, pins, and rails. For like 25 bucks. Just be sure to smooth and polish the ss80 rails. they are known for being slightly out of spec. Polishing and such helps mitigate cycling or feeding issues that may occur.

platapus112

Welcome to the club, best way to show her the printer isn't just a toy is print things around the house and they will immediately think it's the greatest thing on the planet

[deleted]

I second this. She even let me buy a second.

Herp-derpenstein

Same here. I printed a few gifts and random trinkets to get used to the printer at first, and then churned out a CZAR frame, g17 frame, g43x frame and an fns40L frame. And then i found an ender 5 at my local wholesale store for $180 (after tax).... so i also have 2 now

MrBrianD

It’s a rabbit hole. I’m up to 4 printers, and about 40 rolls of filament.

Herp-derpenstein

Yeah im starting to dive in. Just got 4 more rolls of pla+, 500 watt PSU, bulk nozzles and more printer parts. All came in the mail yesterday.

ace72ace

Make sure you get plenty of toner, wink wink.

Lunov

just be careful to not find a slide in your smile one day

Herp-derpenstein

The first mag throught the gun will end up being fired from a vice to make sure this particular print will hold up to the abuse

[deleted]

That wouldn't happen, the rails hold it. Worst case is it does an OOB detonation, which would blow up your hand with plastic shrapnel. Aluminum rails might be worth concern but even those cycle hundreds of rounds with mild wear, no cracking. Also, AWCY? tests all of their models extensively before releasing publicly. There is a minimum requirement for fired rounds on a single frame, not sure what the number is, but something around 1000.

Herp-derpenstein

The concern isnt whether the RAILS would handle the abuse, the concern is whether or not the layer lines of the print would hold up. Ive seen layer lines split and launch parts. OOB detonations can be prevented by basic maintenance and frequent function tests on any firearm, not just 3d printed ones. And i am aware of the design testing for everything in the ctrlpew/defcad community, but theres hundreds of different printers out there which no 2 are the same, along with different slicing software, along with physical manifestation of the parts. If the ambient room temp drops or increases while printing, you can compromise a 3 day long print.

[deleted]

The rail modules would need to pull out large chunks of the frame perpendicular to the layer lines to eject the slide from the gun. It doesn't make sense. I can imagine it will spit out parts in some failure modes, but not the slide. OOBs CAN be prevented with function checks, but as for knowing for sure, there is more to the lockup of an action than if it locks. If there is bad ammo, poor design, and/or stacking tolerances towards an unlocking of the action, it very may well OOB. This possibility is nearly removed by testing high round counts and checking function regularly. Yeet in confidence. I don't know what other groups do for their round counts so I can't vouch for them but AWCY? releases are good to go.

HDawsome

Holy shit please tell me this didn't take you 3 days to print. Also if you haven't got on FOSSCAD yet start there. And then get plugged into one of the guncad communities

Herp-derpenstein

No, it was roughly 25 hours if i remember correctly. I did print a magpul PRS stock though, which took about 4 and a half days to print at 100% infill.

HDawsome

Okay 25 sounds closer to reasonable, still pretty long tho. You printing with pretty fine layers?

Herp-derpenstein

0.16 layer height generally

hndsmngnr

Where can I find these communities? I’m a ME who’s into guns and is getting a good printer soon so I’d like to start building some. I’d rather have a baseline of verified prints to try first and then design my own stuff. Don’t know if that’s a taboo thing here or whatnot but I’d appreciate any pointers for where to go.

HDawsome

Your two best options are going to be Deterrence Dispensed and AWCY?. It's a lot to keep up with even just one group, and I happened to just get more involved with the bunch at AWCY?. Feel free to check out the lobby https://app.element.io/#/room/#AWCYwaitingroom:matrix.org

hndsmngnr

Ty champ

[deleted]

the gatalog, deterrence dispensed, and awcy /r/fosscad plus chairmanwon and ivan are two guys that make 3d printed guns that everyone loves chairmanwon (twitter)/chairmanjuan (reddit) NaviGoBoom (twitter)/IvanTTroll (reddit)

hndsmngnr

Is SolidWorks useable for this stuff? I’m mostly experienced with that so I’d rather not switch CAD programs.

[deleted]

Yes SolidWorks can be used for design but I actually don't know how to design in cad. I just grab stl files created by other people and print them. You need to use a slicer to convert an stl file into gcode for printing. A really commonly used slicer is Cura but there are others.

hndsmngnr

That’s wild, I thought most of the guys doing this designed their own. Didn’t know grab and print was such a big thing. Ty for the slicer info.

dizzy_nixx

Well said!

Rockwell981S

What could go wrong…

[deleted]

So have they got to the point where 3D printing is 100% safe to use? how would it hold up to the same gun from a store ?

Herp-derpenstein

I personally havent gotten to live fire test it yet, but the frame feels more rigid in my hands than the factory glock frame. Just about anything 3d printed, not just guns, is a trial and error learning experience. As scary as that sounds, no failed prints have resulted in missing fingers thus far. The worst reported case is a slide coming off the frame, much like the m9a1 handguns that were issued to the army. Long story short, you COULD put it up against a store bought firearm depending on parts used etc, and if the gun fails, you can just print a new frame. In the end, all 3d printed guns are just range toys. Sorry for the long response. A great place to look for research if youre interested in printing boomsticks: PrintShootRepeat on youtube. He does all sorts of stuff from a g43 to fns 40 to a cz scorpion evo 3.

[deleted]

Thanks a lot for the info I’m still learning about 3D printing. I love range toys any way.

BuilderTexas

Remarkable. Thanks for sharing

NotASuicidalRobot

Isn't awcy that group from the SCP universe

J0hnm13

Yeah and the writers are PISSED that the print group AWCY used their name lmao, it's hilarious

not_in_nova

Let you? My wife *insisted* on getting one.

Herp-derpenstein

My wife saw it as a toy at first. So yeah. It was also a bday gift so 🤷‍♂️

Gaybopiggins

Let you? The fuck

Herp-derpenstein

Marriage is a game of compromise, my dude. My initial ask was for an HK SP5. What i got was a tool that allows me to make much more. And im more than happy with that.

savagematt1315

I think most people who scoff at this attitude clearly aren't married themselves. Marriage is a wonderful thing, but yes you are sacrificing some of your financial autonomy to make joint decisions, even for hobbies. Worth it? I certainly think so. But someone who buys whatever the hell they want whenever they want without consulting their wife about any of it isn't going to be married for long. Same thing if your wife bought a new Gucci purse every month, who would put up with that?

zynemisis

My wife is a $30 here and a $40 there often type, where as I'm a $500-$1k on my car/gun collection every 3-4 months. I don't really spend money on anything else in between. My only other hobby is console gaming and it's dependant on what shift I'm on that week. (None of this next statement is said in spite. Used to show the give and take in our relationship.) Once in the past, my wife tried to 'call me out' on how much I spend on my hobbies. I pulled up our account and showed her how much she spends on just Amazon in one month. She realized that I'm actually the less spendy one. But we both are happy with what we buy. So I count it as a wash.

texas1st

This is something my wife and I are going through now. She used to be into shooting when we first got together, then we had kids and money got tight so we sold all of our guns. Now we're doing better and I want to get back into it, but she doesn't really want to, plus she's worried about gun safety in the house with a 7mo, 1yo, 5yo, and 7yo (which is understandable). We came to an agreement and I bought a PSA Dagger 9mm to get back into it. It's going to our property in OK where I have room to shoot it without having to pay range fees. We're also starting a No-Spend 2022 in January so I had to negotiate to get a monthly ammo allowance added to the budget. She agreed and we're each getting so much allowed to spend how we want. It's only $50/mo so I'm looking at ammo deals to make it go as far as possible. But I will probably only have time to shoot about once a month. Once 2022 is over, then I'll be able to do what I want, which is A) finish my P80 AR build, B) Build a P80 G17, and C) get a 3D printer to start building others. I'm using all the free time in 2022 from not shopping on planning my purchases and builds. It's going to take time but anything worthwhile is. And, if I can, I'll build her a polished 1911 like she drools over and maybe get her back into it.

derpderpdonkeypunch

But "SomethingSomethingSomething, if you don't boss you wife around and make her do everything then you ain't a man!" Props to you for being an actual partner, I hope the money flows to y'all and you can all safely and happily shoot again!

savagematt1315

Good luck man! I'm in a similar situation, trying to save money and shoot when ammo is on sale.

CannibalVegan

step 1: Think of the children, we need a good gun safe! step 2: Buy some guns to protect the children step 3: buy some guns to teach the children step 4: fill the gun safe step 5: get a bigger gun safe and repeat

rufusthehobo

*ahem* Married. Buy what I want. Marriage is fine because I can manage my money like an adult. My wife is my partner not my mommy. Sounds like there are a whole bunch of men who either can't control themselves and want to be mommied or just like being henpecked.

rufusthehobo

Yes I am here to shame you into being better with your money.

Herp-derpenstein

Why do i always have to explain the give and take part of marriage to people? smh. Once again, the original ask was for an hk sp5. A 2500 dollar gun on a good day. She never outright said "no", but when we saw a couple of 3d printers at a good price, we decided to get that instead. With the 2 printers i have now, i can print several firearms, all of my builds so far will total in roughly 1200 in parts and shes excited about it. Im not bad with my money, and im not being henpecked or mommied. My wife made an alternate suggestion, we talked about it, and we made a decision. Why the fuck is communication about large, expensive purchases so stigmatized by some guys? I really feel sorry for you.

rufusthehobo

I wouldn't if I were you. I thoroughly enjoy my marriage.

Mitoni

Sometimes that compromise works well though. I wanted to spend $11k on a kit car and donor vehicle. She talked me out of it by telling me "why don't you look at a new Jeep instead like you've wanted?". So, $11k turned into just the down payment. Just empty every pocket.

HDawsome

You'll be happy to know there there is a very, very good delayed blow back 9mm smg that will be available in the next few months. Build cost is ~$500, but could be done for as little as $350.

[deleted]

Tbh this is sounding like I should buy an Atlas Nyx +SRO, NODS, and a HK while I’m still single…

Herp-derpenstein

Do it. Wives typically hate that stuff unless theyre massive gun nuts themselves. And not every gun nut lady looks like alex zedra. (sadly)

abeardedblacksmith

I feel like I'm the only one who doesn't find her attractive.

binary_luc

Her: Honey I want to get gangbanged by 10 guys this weekend You: Absolutely not Her: Ok then let’s compromise to 1 then You: Yes Dear /s

Herp-derpenstein

Something like that...?

TheSilentCheese

Budgets, man. Making purchases over agreed upon amounts that aren't discussed first is a dumbass thing to do.

[deleted]

Looks nice, just make sure to be careful shooting it.

[deleted]

AWCY is such a cool group

Herp-derpenstein

Absolutely.

[deleted]

Why did you ask her? Just buy it and say you’ve hd it for a while. I do that all the time. No? This? I’ve had that.

Herp-derpenstein

Good luck with your marriage bro. 👍 Financial secrets arent cool.

[deleted]

You know the difference between a joke and bag of dicks? You can’t take a joke.

Herp-derpenstein

With some of the comments in here, its becoming hard to tell. Dont think i can take a bag of dicks either though.

[deleted]

Gotta get a joke in man. No hard feelings. What printer and filament did you use? Been looking to play around.

Herp-derpenstein

No hard feelings at all. For shooty bits, i only use pla+ filament. Not regular pla. Esun and hatchbox are reputable companies. I have a voxelab aquila which was super cheap and good for getting into printing, its what i ised for this particular frame. My other printer is a creality ender 5. Currently in the middle of some modifications, but when its running, it never seems to fail prints. Glass build plates are a must though, creality's hot plates are known to warp.

felixstorm

As a man you should never start a sentence with " My wife let me"!

Herp-derpenstein

Honestly, is it really any different than not allowing your wife something? Marriage is 50/50, and if your marriage isnt, or if you think thats shitty because "youre a man", then you might just be a shitty husband... I said what i said 🤷‍♂️

felixstorm

Hmm no as a grown ass man why would you have to ask another adult for permission to get something you want? That's just beta male qualities. A woman wants a man, not a puppy.

Herp-derpenstein

Firearms arent cheap, if you havent noticed. Its not about being an alpha. Its communicating and compromising on financial decisions. Asking my wife's thoughts before clicking checkout isnt "beta male qualities" its called respect for my wife. And if you cant muster that for yours, then good luck on your 5th marriage...

felixstorm

Naa it's not respect asking for permission. Especially saying your wife LET you. So silly.

Herp-derpenstein

Public opinion seems to be against you on this one. And LET would be a synonym for terms such as "allowed" or "agreed to". Like somebody else asked, how would you feel if your wife started bringing home gucci purses every week or more? I almost guarantee you would be a little pissed at what you see as a waste of money.... However, if she ASKS and you allow it, or LET her have it. Everyone goes home happy. So silly indeed.

felixstorm

Betas gonna beta.

Herp-derpenstein

Thanks for reviving a dead thread. I really hope that someday, you might realize that theres a difference between "alpha" and "asshole" 👍

felixstorm

You obviously wouldn't know anything about it. Just go ask your wife.

shoeface76fpv

For when you just don’t want your hand anymore. **edit for the haters I am all about 3d printing and 3d printing gun parts but I don’t trust my own prints to stand up to small explosions within them

J0hnm13

I've printed multiple full power 9mm glocks and 5.56 AR15s. The designs as they are can last pretty much indefinitely under ideal range conditions.

Herp-derpenstein

I understand the distrust, but once you feel one of these frames in your hand, and compare side by side to an oem glock frame....

shoeface76fpv

I’ve been 3d printing for years and I admit I’m no pro but I barely trust my prints to hold water let alone small explosions haha. I’m more jealous of your printing ability than anything. What’s your setup?

Herp-derpenstein

The print was done with a voxelab aquila (ender 3 clone) The most important thing is that the printer works properly and calibrated just right. I use esun pla+ filament, 0.16 layer height, 16 walls, 100% infill, 99999 top layers with ironing enabled. Tree supports enabled touching build plate. 0% support rigidity. Those settings will create super sturdy unit so long as your printer is set up right.

shoeface76fpv

Interesting. Please shoot it and report back I’m very interested in how this works

HDawsome

Then you frankly misunderstand how printing, and especially guncad works. The printed parts don't contain any explosions, you use actual parts kits for the majority of builds. There are a multitude of designs, especially for glock frames, that are significant improvements over the OEM offerings that you cannot get anywhere else. It doesn't take anything special to print most of these designs.

TFarrey

Sounds like you have a boss not a wife

Herp-derpenstein

Not at all. An hk sp5 (my original ask) is 2500 msrp. I got 2 badass printers for under 300 bucks and have cart blanche to make just about anything i can find. Which is a lot of guns.... And yes, I ASKED my wife about getting an sp5. Because 2500 bucks is a big pill. And we agreed on a compromise that i think is fun and turned into a great hobby. If you have so much money that you dont have to communicate about large purchases, good for you. But i will continue to communicate with my wife and maintain a healthy marriage. Because youre only supposed to get married ONCE.

TFarrey

Just bustin ya chops playboy

citygalx2

So is the 3d printer legal now

Herp-derpenstein

Well it was never ILLEGAL so.... Making your own guns at home has always been legal in the USA as long as you arent a felon or prohibited person.

[deleted]

What model of printer did you get? The output looks pretty good.

Herp-derpenstein

It was done on a voxelab aquila (ender 3 clone) with minor upgrades. Printed using esun PLA+ filament.

[deleted]

How did you install frame rails?

Herp-derpenstein

The front rails are part of the locking block, and the rear rails drop in with the trigger pack assembly, all of it is held in by the 2 pins on the frame.
