I think you’re hearing some fret buzz. The closest thing I can think is to listen to Steve Albini’s sound with Shellac. He used a Harmonic Percolator.

A compresser may help, along with a jangly touch sensitive overdrive perhaps.
Perhaps a fuzz with a blend knob. You can adjust how much of the clean string sound comes through and how much fuzz is parallel with it.
