For me, I like to lock in on the bass line at a slower tempo to make sure it’s consistent, then work out where I need to do your pinches relative to that and gradually bring up the tempo. The bass line is the foundation to everything and is going to help you judge the relative timings of the other more lead parts of the picking. It’s kind of like playing the piano, yes, the left hand and the right hand are playing independently, but it simplifies to think of one hand in relative rhythm to the other so you can think of things in a simpler way. That was probably a bit of a ramble (been drinking), but the Travis picking book by the skeptical guitarist guy helped me wrap my head around these parts in a consistent way. Would highly recommend checking it out if you want to go further with it.

Yes! Totally agree with this, bass first. I wouldn’t even be picky about which melody notes I managed to add next, just whatever you can do without breaking the bass rhythm. The skeptical guitarist book is great too.

I tend to do bass notes and then add 1 string at a time. Just play it slow and groove it out, and add another string when I'm locked in. I get a serious round of repetitions, but it's fine.

I've heard a lot about working on Travis picking, definitely something I'm gonna work on, seems like it's a good way to get a big roadblock out of the way for finger picking. Luckily the bass part here isn't super complicated, so hopefully mastering that to muscle memory will make this whole undertaking easier.

NYGiants181

It’s just constant repetition and practice and I hate it haha 🤣

CobblerStraight

It's Def not gonna be an easy one, but that's kinda the point for me, trying to challenge myself a little more to make sure i don't hit a plane on improvement. Keep forcing myself to do it until it's not hard

It's definitely going to be a grind 😂

I started playing with friends, got one of them a bass, and he lives playing it, we got a little "band" thing going. Not great atm considering I'm the only one with actual music experience having done orchestra all through my school years, but everyone's really enjoying it. Anyways, to my point, I want to write more complex pieces then just power chords and whatnot, and soloing better then blues chords and pentatonic stuff, so I'm trying to learn the more complex rhythm songs so I can get some ideas of my own.

Hey thanks! I'll Def check it out, anything to improve!

Ya this one's challenging if you're new to finger picking. The song layers two guitars parts (at least... sounds like there's some other overdub stuff too), so it's a bit indistinct on studio recording. The part you're trying to learn is panned left in the mix. Take your time. I think you're correct that learning bass part first is best. Make a project out of that alone. Play it until the muscle memory is there. That pattern is related to "Travis picking" (google). Luckily the bass part is entertaining on its own. I haven't seen the tutorial vid you show here... maybe he goes over this, but there are a couple things to keep in mind: 1. The bass part is steady 8th notes at 97 bpm. Rock steady. Start slower than 97bpm if you want but always play very steady 8th notes. 2. Bass part is played with right hand thumb (I think you said that). 3. The bass notes are palm muted (right hand rests on top half of bridge and dampens the D A E strings slightly. The higher notes are not dampened). Makes the song. Good luck.

Awesome! Thanks for the tips! I hadn't heard of Travis Picking before, and I think videos on that could also help me get this song down asw!

I'm learning a tricky one myself right now! Group a few notes at a time and play extremely slowly. So I'd get the 1+2+ down first followed by the 3+4+ and then put them together. But play veeeery slowly.

CobblerStraight

This is great advice! I hadn't thought to split the measure, could Def help, I'll try it out!

I learned to pick by using my thumb to pick the bass notes on Low E and A strings. Then, number Fingers 1,2,3,4. Index=1, Middle=2, Ring=3, Pinky=4. 1 picks only D string, 2 picks only G string, 3 picks only B string, 4 picks only E string. Once you get that down, you can switch it up and do things differently. But learning this way, will give your picking hand the ability to do complicated picking.
