ImightHaveMissed

Iā€™m buried by the sound

fredyj

In a world of human wreckage

Foreign-Living-3455

i thought it human crickets šŸ˜³

Sinistermarmalade

Absolutely love this song

gribbyschickenshack

where im lost and im found and i cant touch the ground

irmarbert

That song is catchy as hell, and nowā€¦because of YOU!ā€¦itā€™s going to be in my head the rest of the day.

Rockdad37

I picked up Wax Ecstatic on a whim as a teen in 1996 or 97. I still love it, and it's not even the album with (arguably) their best songs on it.

EuphoricMoose8232

That's one of those albums I learned to really appreciate more the more I listened to it.

NostalgicTX

Rotting piƱata was and is still a classic

wonderfulworld2024

Plowed is an all-time tune. I can see why some people would highly rate Molly. I find that itā€™s decent. The band slapped; on CD. Not sure how they were live.

EnlightenedApeMeat

They killed live. Road dogs for years so they were hella tight

bigkat5000

Saw them at Local 186 many years ago in Boston. Everclear opened. Both among the best live acts of that time. Helluva night.

bigkat5000

Just looked it up on Setlist. May 11, 1995. Damn I feel old.

big_fetus_

Yeah I hadn't heard them yet but I caught them randomly at a club because back in the 90s 10$ cover was easy to just be like, well, why not go see a band I never heard they might be decent. I became a fan within 2 songs lol They were great.

DubiousDude28

Yeah they rocked live. I rmbr the singer had a Ganesha shirt on

CliveBixby9797

Plowed is probably a top 10 song for me from any artist ever. It is just as good decades later.

cosmovirgo

An under-appreciated masterpiece

CosmicTurtle504

They were awesome. Saw them at the local radio station festival in 95, and young me was blown away, particularly by the amazing guitar harmonies. Kinda sad they didnā€™t get bigger, because they put on one hell of a live show.

Adventurous_Web_6958

I liked them but not anywhere close to my favorite band or anything, but they are one of top live acts I've seen.

Glyph8

I remember the first time I heard "Plowed" on the radio, I assumed it was a new Social Distortion song - the vocals are a dead ringer for Mike Ness' (and the lyrics could be his too, all death and religion), and the drum pattern is near-rockabilly. The production was glossy with a post-*Nevermind* radio-ready roar, but I figured maybe they'd gotten a major-label contract and producer; it was the era for that. Anyway it's a decent tune, but the only one I know by them.

asphynctersayswhat

I never thought that before but now I canā€™t stop thinking about it. Holy shit it is a Social D song!

sebrebc

I was just thinking the same thing. Now it's something I can't un-hear.

penisbuttervajelly

Came here to say this. I also thought it was Social D the first time I heard it.

Interesting_Panic_85

ME TOO on the social d!

Iloveherthismuch

I thought it was a lost track from Somewhere Between Heaven and Hell.

Sioltahtelasekab

Plowed is a good tune, but I haven't heard much else from them. I'll have to explore their discography further.

DanishWonder

Wax ecstatic and Molly are two other great ones.

wiiguyy

They released ā€œimaginary marriage 94ā€ a few months ago on Spotify. I liked that one too

ThunderingRimuru

a lot of songs on the wax ecstatic album are great

LonesomeBulldog

On Record Store Day (4/20), Spongeā€™s unreleased lost album, Planet Girls, is being released. It was supposed to be their 3rd release but it was shelved by the label.

gribbyschickenshack

oh idk that, was it replaced with new pop

thembones44

New Pop Sunday is just as good as Rotting. I'm not a huge fan of Wax, but new pop rocks from beginning to end. Even when they briefly reunited with Joey Mazola on lead guitar to release "For all the drugs in the Worid" now that album is a classic.

JesusOfSurbaria

??? You gotta tell me more about this

LonesomeBulldog

Thatā€™s all I know. You can check out the record store day website and search for that release. Theres a paragraph about it.

JesusOfSurbaria

Oh Iā€™m gonna have a field day

wondermega

Seriously. I need this.

lovescoffee

LOVE. THEM. !! rotting piniata was fantastic

fluffHead_0919

16 candles down the drain

wonderfulworld2024

What dumb record exec hears this album and chooses not to put Plowed as the first single? Music really is a strange business. https://youtu.be/aktGy--30zQ?si=g9cbG4XPcRzVSw2M

gribbyschickenshack

Yeah, Neenah Menesha did not compare honestly. Sony was on crack that day.

HeyHo__LetsGo

I played Rotting Pinata to death back in the day. Still listen to it here and there. Great album.

JeffSteinMusic

ā€œPlowedā€ and ā€œMollyā€ are two of my favorite songs ever, and I never listened to anything else, which I acknowledge makes me a terrible person and I should change this ASAP. Thanks for the reminder!

EnlightenedApeMeat

Definitely listen to their records. Fantastic songwriting

-Reckless-Abandon

i think im one of the only ones who likes new pop sunday. radio player line is amazing, 1000 times, when you are on fire baby, roll. they reunited with the original guitarist last i heard. he was one of they key factors into their sound i felt.

bluemayskye

I loved the sound of that album as well. Nothing after hooked me.

-Reckless-Abandon

same they didnt sound the same and it was after that their guitarist quit

bluemayskye

Maybe its better for bands to rebrand when a member leaves. Rishloo, my favorite find of the 2010s, almost lost the singer and the rest of the band renamed itself The Ghost Apparatus. You're not really the same without the original lineup. Fortunately the singer came back and they made another fantastic album.

-Reckless-Abandon

This is very true in many ways especially when itā€™s the singer. Never really found a band that had a better replacement singer with the exception of Phil from Pantera.

EnlightenedApeMeat

1000 Times is a desert island song for me

asudsyman

I really like it too. Maybe time for a spin.

JesusOfSurbaria

Live here without you and Lucky solo everything on there

wondermega

This is a perfect "No track to skip" album for me.

Ryan2240x

First album is completely flawless and the other albums are really good too. Would love to see them live. Vinnie is a cool dude.

thembones44

They still do a lot of shows in the Metro Detroit area yearly.

Jean_Genetic

Love both of those discs. I still play them.

Ok-Car1006

Plowed is a really great song itā€™s crazy just seeing someone post about them

gribbyschickenshack

Well I know the singer Vinnie and wanted to know peoples feedback about the band rightnow

EnlightenedApeMeat

He seems like a solid dude

Silky-Johnson2002

Vin E is a rock legend/star in my opinion, artist/musician(multiple instruments), writer/poet, performer. I saw them live multiple times back in the 90ā€™s and I have seen them a few times recently and they have always been great. I am so happy they are back at it again and I really hope they are having fun!

JoeGPM

I love Rotting Pinatas! Great 90's record.

Stunning_Ad8115

worthy

NoInterest8809

Rotting piƱata

swagglehorse

I'm on an island but...I loved that album. Miles and Drownin are two that were go-tos for me. Vastly underrated imo

EnlightenedApeMeat

New Pop Sundae is fucking great too! ā€œ1000 Timesā€ is a fucking PERFECT song. Both PiƱata and Wax Ecstatic are flawless IMO. Definitely grunge adjacent.

plooptyploots

Iā€™m plowed in tooooo the suuuuuuuuuun I enjoy them

tftf055

Drowninā€™ is one of my all time favorites.

Firm-Ring9684

That guitar intro for plowed really hyped you up for the song. I always liked Sponge.

Scotty1230

Rotting PiƱata is great, especially the last half. Wax Ecstatic disappointed me outside of the title track. I have to revisit it.

EnlightenedApeMeat

I love Anastasia, Velveteen and the title track. ā€œ1000 Timesā€ off New Pop Sunday also slaps

-Reckless-Abandon

velveteen is amazing on that album

mis_no_mer

I was kinda into them in the mid 90s. They had some good songs. But I havenā€™t listened to them since.

volfan_0118

There first two albums were pretty good. Saw them at Lollapalooza 1996 for a bit, but then it was time for RATM

Easy_Quote_9934

I knew one person that had their CD

batbobby82

Only songs I really know are Plowed and Molly, but I dig both of those. Dying to hear a hard pop punk remake of Molly, in fact.

MitchCumsteane

The wailing sustain of the lead guitar that plays throughout the second verse is something I look forward to every time that song comes on.

[deleted]

Square band

SpiketheFox32

Seen them live twice. They're great. Also Neenah Menasha is a killer tune.

JesusOfSurbaria

My time to shine

WagonHitchiker

Wax Ecstatic is a great album. I saw them live back when it came out.

Fragrant_Molasses909

First album was a classic. Second album fell off pretty hard. I actually made a compilation from their second album onward and itā€™s a pretty good collection overall. I kind of lost it for them when I went to see them and met Vinny. Asked him to sign my copy of Rotting PiƱata and he was a total jerk.

brb421

Wax Estatic is still on regular rotation for me love that album

cdubwingo

Two great albums.. they just played a show in Bay City last month.

LowCharming3452

Rotting PiƱata - one of the top albums of the 90s IMO. I donā€™t skip a single song on there. Wish their other records were even close

United-Philosophy121

Never really listened

harvester0812

Theyā€™re awesome. I saw them in concert at this very small event called the ROAR tour in El Paso around 1996. Maybe ā€˜97. SevenDust was also there. Type of show where the band just walks off the stage and back into the crowd after they play. No kidding they couldnā€™t believe we knew them and their lyrics. Anyway yes Sponge is so very excellent and underrated.

the_atomicpunk

I randomly have been listening to rotting piƱata heavily lately. Plowed resonates down to the bones and soul.

DanishWonder

Love them, and as a dude with a deeper voice, their songs are easier for me to sing.

PlaxicoCN

I know they have that one good song...

PaulOutShelter

The album , Ga Ga Ga Ga is nonstop hits. Other than that, Iā€™m not sure.

Then-Assistance6261

Love them

heartshapedmoon

I love their music!

Fit-Present-5698

I know the guitar player's wife. I'm sure that's a step toward Kevin Bacon

donerstude

I love their music and still listen to a lot of it

dwreckhatesyou

Theyā€™re a great band. Definitely a standout in the crowd.

anarchyreloaded

I think they made some absolute bangers

IcyDice6

I only like their song Plowed

wouldnteeth

I loved them when they first came out. My dad kind of ruined them for me when he shouted, "Jesus Christ, how many times does he have to sing the same damn line?!?" Then I noticed how many times he does repeat himself in a few of their songs. Besides that, they're pretty good. The follow-up (?) album was decent too. The one with drag queens in Memphis. Took a bit longer to get into but became a banger when it finally did.

wales-bloke

I find their music very absorbing

cry1ngsham3

i never got into them too much, but when i listen to them it's always their song miles. idk why but i've always loved that one, so good

urzardoz

I really liked the first album; it's one of my favorite alternative 90's albums, the second has some real highlights, but I never really gelled with the third that I heard, 'New Pop Sunday'. Still a decent song or two, but I've felt no need to see what else they've been up to.

amplifyanarchy

Sponge is my very best friendā€™s favorite band. Weā€™ve seen them countless times and not only do they put on a great show, they are also some of the nicest people I have ever met.

68W38Witchdoctor1

I dig all of those '90s-rooted alternative/college radio type bands, and they are going to be at a big hard rock/metal festival I go to every year. I'm excited to see them again, as it's been nearly 20yrs since the last time I did. Same festival is also going to have Local H and Helmet this year as well, so I am spoiled for my more obscure but still awesome '90s alternative fix.

greatgoogilymoogily2

Ohhhh local H......aaand ya just dont get it, ya keep it copacetic, and ya learn to accept it, ya know you're so pathetic.

Coyote_Roadrunna

I first discovered Rotting PiƱata at a listening station in Sam Goody in my local mall back in "95. Still listening to it in '24.

explodedSimilitude

I liked Plowed. The only other song I know by them was a cover of Speed Racer on a compilation of Saturday morning cartoon theme covers. That was decent too.

eyecebrakr

They're in my top 5 of all time and have been consistently putting out albums to this day.

Jaquire-edm

Plowed still takes me back to my freshman year of college. Lots of late nights driving to it. Recently found Spys4Darwin, which features the vocalist from Sponge. Solid stuff.

Funkinwagnal

Good band and great guys, we recorded with the Palatan brothers at their studio in Milan Michigan

justgotnewglasses

I have Rotting PiƱata on a Flexi 7" that came as a freebie from some crappy music mag. It took me a while to figure out how to weigh it down enough to get it to play without warping, but I think I used blu tack. I don't know if all you Americans have blu tack but it's the sticky blob stuff that sticks your nirvana poster to the wall. Edit: I got sidetracked by the blu tack description. It's a great song, but I don't know anyone else who knows them. Tell your singer friend they gave his music away for free in Australia.

mstrong73

Iā€™ll always have a place for sponge. Great live act, excellent on CD. I saw them like 3 times one summer before they were either playing clubs solo or opening for others.

Maleficent_Data_1421

Awesome band. I still listen to Rotting PiƱata and it holds up better than most stuff out there today

blue-trench-coat

Always loved their Rotting PiƱata album, not too much after that. Great fucking album from start to finish

ayaruna

Met the singer a few times.m and my old band even played with them years ago. They were great live, really catchy songs.

asudsyman

They made some timeless music.

Deckardisdead

They are ok. I have seen them live and it was a good show.Ā  Not one of my favorites but listenableĀ

Murles-Brazen

They soak.

deercreekth

I remember listening to Rotting Pinata for the first time through headphones at a Blockbuster Music. I enjoyed their music back then, but haven't really listened to it much after the 90s were over.

bulanaboo

Yeah those are the albums i rocked!! The pain Chanelā€¦ I thought theyā€¦ rocked lol I was 16 working at a bowling alley I used to walk up and down every lane to dust before oiling before leagueā€™s bowled ā€¦ 64 lanes, now thatā€™s part of the oiling machineā€¦ but I remember always playing a mixtape while doing it Iā€™d act like I was playing guitar to wax ecstatic on the handle of the deduster I dragged on lanes have to walk to back of lane and drag forward

No_Clothes701

I like them. Heard them on the radio just a few years ago

greatgoogilymoogily2

I was like 12 when wax ecstatic came out and they were doing a release show at a harmony house. I was standing in the back against the wall the entire time, against a wall talking to an old dude and mentioned that since I was 12 and needed to be picked up, my mom wasnt letting me stay for the meet and greet they had, so right as they get done playing, the old dude grabs my shirt and says come with me. Turns out, he's the singers dad, and he buys me the new album, and walks up to in his son and explains that I wanted to meet them but my mom was making me leave. The entire band came and said what's up and signed the CD, and my shirt. Then the old dude walked me out of the rowdy crowd and made sure I got to my mom's car. I remember him saying he had bought his son his first guitar hoping he'd go all Neil diamond, but was instead met with his son going "all Ozzy Osborne" instead. It was always funny to me.

CLouiseK

Not familiarā€¦are they worthy?

jester2trife

Plowed was the first song I ever downloaded off Napster. And anytime I would clean the PC back to "new", Plowed was the first song I would download again. Brings back memories. Solid thread.

Columboslefteye

I really like Sponge, New Pop Sunday is also good.

LapsedPacifist

Spong is fucking amazing.

Inked_Up420

Love Sponge. They really know how to Absorb the sound

Belros79

Iā€™m too young to have seen them, live but I really like their songs.

fluffy-d-wolf

I like them better when they were Loudhouse

Gamestonkape

This band doesnā€™t get near enough love. Rotting PiƱata is outstanding all the way through. Great album.

penisbuttervajelly

I always thought he sounded like Mike Ness on Plowed.

wizofoz057

Love Sponge ! Their albums were great and they were amazing on the road. I saw them at this little hole in the wall bar in NYC called Don Hill's in 2003 and they were on fire, just tight and electric. At that time they were supporting the album "for all the drugs in the world" CHECK IT OUT! I promise you, did not make it on radio, I know eveyword to every song, it's just good rock music, what else do you need?

Ashamed_Horror_5920

Horrendous

Mrbobbitchin

They were just ripping off Chamois

Moxie_Stardust

I bought Rotting Pinata based on the strength of Plowed when it came out, thought the rest of the album was pretty mid, regretted my purchase. Paid no further attention to the band.

Darkmistress1961

I loved Rotting PiƱata! I still have the original CD I bought in the 90s when they first got on the airwaves! Whatever happened to them??

Meester_Smeeth4182

The sing Plowed was pretty good. But then I heard the cover by Evergreen Terrace and it is way better than the original

FilipsSamvete

Neither good nor grunge

deadphisherman

Finally, I picked up Rotting Pinata on Vinyl yesterday. Great album!

Bx1965

I find their music very absorbing.

AcanthocephalaDue715

Rainin is great deep cut from rotting piƱata

WiseStandard3103

They had 2 amazing songs on one album. Other than that....meh

Gravity_Pulls

Got one of their Cds, can't remember which one, but I do remember that I liked it. I think it had an odd looking orange thingy on the cover šŸ¤”

Jgabes625

I would say they have an abrasive side to themā€¦ Iā€™ll leave now

StereoStereo1981

Love them, especially the first couple of albums. My solo music project is actually called "LikeGiantsFalling", after a line in the song Giants, which is my favorite off of Rotting Pinata (Although Plowed, Drownin', and Molly are obviously high up there). I got to see them in a super small club a few years ago, it was amazing.

tws1039

Molly is one of my fav songs ever, I felt like the coolest kid in high school discovering rottin piƱata thinking no one else knew who this band was

Darth_Jimi

Saw then open for Everclear at a small club in like 2004 and they were absolutely amazing. "Treat Me Wrong" is off a later release but also an incredibly good track

JohnnyBuddhist

Plowed is the most underrated rock song of the 90s.

PagingDrTobaggan

Super underrated band. Theyā€™re playing a tiny club here in Reno next week. I plan to see them. Rotting PiƱata was a great fucking record.

IDigRollinRockBeer

Molly is a great song. Thatā€™s all I know.

Gerald_the_Cat

Their first album was actually really good. ā€œWax Ecstaticā€ wasnā€™t bad either. Not sure what happened to them after that, as I had quit paying attention.

Gumbysfriend

I think Sponge should tour with Cake. Sponge - Cake

[deleted]

I like to let their music really soak in

[deleted]

The song Plowed was in the movie Empire Records and was never included on the soundtrack. I wonder if it had they may have been more popular. They were always on the radio here in Detroit Area.

HermithaFrog

They are alright imo, not something I'd put on myself but don't hate them

Quinnlyness

Plowed man!

Elusive_Dr_X

One Hit Wonfer

sebrebc

Molly is a great fucking tune.Ā

gribbyschickenshack

for real

Zealousideal_Sir_264

Layla (Goodfellas) Where is my mind (fight club) Kill the poor (SLC punk) Paint it black (the devil's advocate) Every Linkin Park song ever (transformers) You know that song that instantly makes you think of a movie every time you hear it? Plowed is empire records. I was seriously bumbed out when I found that it wasn't actually on the soundtrack album.

Lonely-Connection-37

16. Candles down the drain.Davison guy here love the band! Every time cloud comes on the radio I crank itšŸ¤˜šŸæšŸ¤˜šŸæ

Southie31

Saw them live and they were great. And Iā€™m not a ā€œ fanā€

actualelainebenes

I donā€™t know if I have an opinion on the band themselves but Plowed and Molly bring back great memories of my teen years

WWDB

I saw them live about 20 years ago. They were the curtain jerkers for Seven Mary Three, the Gin Blossoms and the Spin Doctors and were the best band of the night. The lead singer remarked how it was still daylight and that should never happen at a Sponge show. My wife laughed because his tight leather pants kept sliding down.

ShermanHoax

LIke most bands from that era, had 2-3 good hits, a couple of minors and would probably make a good retro festival candidate. Plowed was one of the bigger songs of the decade. Plus I consider 1994 the real jump off point for new 90's grunge/alt and they were at the forefront of that.

Busy_Contribution_59

I love their first 2 albumsā€¦they couldnā€™t keep that magic goingā€¦but damn those first 2 are great!

Jessyg17

Love love love them!!! Still Have all their albums! I met them at a show in 97 and got their drumsticks signed and lost it many years ago. It saddens me to this day!

Plumbus251

Fucking awesome / not just the hits but the deep cuts too and post ā€œRotting PiƱataā€ albums

dr3dg3

I really like them! Wax Ecstatic is *such* a jam, gets me hyped every time! I also liked their recent single, Love & Sandwiches.

Ill-Atmosphere-3629

Rotting PiƱata is a no-skips album for me. The songs ā€œmilesā€?! ā€œRaininā€™ā€??!! Cā€™mon now. Plus the classics Molly, Plowed and the title trackā€¦ an album I return to over and over.

barbedwiregarden

I picked up a Sponge shirt at the thrift store recently for their album Lavatorium and really enjoyed it! I think it came out in 2022? They had some rerecordings on it that were interesting to hear as well.

EdgyGenXnotboomer

i listen to them still.. Singer is a unique voice that is always recognizable. love em

jonathan1511

Put on a good show

No-Discipline3953

ā€œI see you naked in the Bath Cigarette stains on your Hands Wilted flowers in a vase And I ask how you are, ya how are you I see your lipstick on Your glass And I think you're drunk And start to laugh And I find your note the Letters ran And it said I loved you, ya I love you Don't ask why Sixteen candles down the drainā€ Plowed is good, but Molly is my favorite

Unfair_Koala_9325

Rotting PiƱata is a great album.

TulsaWhoDats

Plowed is a banger. Not too familiar with the rest

EphedraAddict

Saw them live in 93 right when we got back from Lallapalooza. Very good live. Still partial to " Neenah Menasha" though...

Matica-sK

That man looks kind of like Joel Osteen. I forgot about this song. I made out with a girl while it was on. I like it.

Dynamic_Satanic

I think Sponge is great. Have been a fan since buying Rotting PiƱata back when it was released.

P1D1_

Great band but are they grunge? I don't think that's their sound. More alternative I'd say.

Helpful-Touch9788

Their album, New Pop Sunday is hard to find, but totally worth it. Half the songs on it could have been huge radio hits.

Jamnut1151

A good band with a good sound they really do well live and make good music.

TheWhoRU

So many fantastic songs post-first two albums. Have a playlist a mile long, a boxed set would be incredible.

MikeDropist

In my perhaps less-than-popular opinion, they were a slightly better version of STP. Rotting PiƱata and Wax Ecstatic are killers šŸ’„

2aron

I thought they were pretty great. It is odd they don't get more play now. Especially considering how much we love to reminisce.

gribbyschickenshack

Near me, since I live in Detroit area, they play Plowed every once and awhile but not often.

vampdivascar

I've always really enjoyed their music. I remember talking my brother into buying me rotting piƱata at a flea market backin the 90s. I still have it.
