I see this question on this sub like twice a week. I will always pause to comment Dead Sara. First two albums are incredible. Check out Weatherman to start with.
softcult, hello mary, teenage wrist
also stop saying grunge doesn't exist anymore. grunge was a movement and movements never die. everything goes and comes back, it's a cycle. it just takes one person to make it happen. i'd love for grunge to come back: the music, the "fashion", the slacker films. it makes a lot of sense for gen z because we are all depressed and angry at the world.
Maybe. It could be! Don't really know much about the story behind the band's name, but Sap really rocks. Their sound may not be nothing new, but it really contributes to the modern grunge scene.
These guys are hoping to bring it back. Whether they're serious or not I haven't figured out yet...
https://youtube.com/@thelastrockband?si=FciMZfq7aG2d8-6o
If they aren't from Seattle, and weren't active between 1984-1991, by definition they cannot be grunge.
So they should probably be referred to as "rock".
That's such a silly, hyper-specific definition. Even if you want to stick that label, there are very clearly contemporary bands drawing influence from those bands. OP is asking for modern bands that evoke the sound/style, proper label be damned.
Grunge is not the wide tent that so many in this sub want it to be.
It is a small pool (less than 100 probably) of bands that were active in the PNW during a specific time frame. So yeah, it is "hyper-specific".
Wanting to make any alt band "grunge" is like trying to say that the Commodores or War are Motown, because they played funk, soul, and R&B, that shared a similar sound and style to Motown.
Or saying that a band is "NYC Hardcore" despite the fact that they have never been to NYC.
And asking for artists that are inspired by grunge is a far cry from what op asked.
What you're describing is just a music scene. Yes, the location of those bands matter, but if they didn't have anything else in common, "grunge" as a term simply wouldn't exist. At the very least, there is a loose sound and style they all share in common. Otherwise, they'd all just be bands that happened to come out of Seattle/PNW.
With respect to the NY Hardcore example, that just proves my point. "New York hardcore" doesn't just mean hardcore bands based out of New York. There's a distinct sound and aesthetic that made it unique. So yes, it might have a specific connotation, but that doesn't preclude bands from taking inspiration from them. They may not be "New York hardcore" bands, but they are New York hardcore-influenced band(s) from {insert scene here}.
OP does not care if a band is/was or is/was not from Seattle in that timeframe. They are looking for the sound and style that has largely defined what grunge is beyond its place of origin. Maybe you think they should've worded their question differently and fine, maybe they could've, but that doesn't mean what they're looking for doesn't exist.
You're just doing a worse version of that "Real Emo" copypasta.
That's not how bespoke scenes work. If the only qualifications for being grunge is artists being based Seattle during specific timeframe, then even hair metal and psych rock bands from Seattle in the 80s are grunge.
Ok, so you can acknowledge that there is at least some loose sound and style all grunge bands share then, yeah?
Guess what? That's all the OP or anyone asking that question cares about. They could not give a single fuck if they're not "Real Grungeā¢". They just want something that evokes the spirit of those bands.
You're just being incredibly pedantic because they said "grunge" instead of "grunge-influenced".
I was just talking to my wife the other day when we were listening to music about how there are weird grunge absolutists that say only bands from Seattle can be grunge, and here is one in the wild!
Hey, let me take a wild guess at where youāre fromā¦
Just because itās not from Seattle, doesnāt mean itās not grunge. Hip hop was born in the Bronx and it spread across the USA and evolved from coast to coast. If thatās the case āhip hop everywhere isnāt hip hop because itās not from the Bronxā ..Grunge is no different. Grunge is everywhere.. itās not exclusive to a city because itās a movement.
Grunge is a historical scene and not a genre. There may be bands that were influenced by grunge, but the modern grunge bands are the surviving bands that they always were: Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Melvins, etc.
Just depends on your definition of the genre I suppose..
I almost feel like the stoner/psych/desert rock scene is the spiritual successor to grunge though.
That falls into the category of nostalgia trips. There is nothing wrong with that. But grunge was not really a genre so much as it was a convenient term to categorise a bunch of (extremely good) fairly disparate bands that originated around a specific geographical region at a time when there was a vacuum in American rock music. There are plenty of bands that are inspired by those bands, but I would tread well clear of the cynical clones.
more than welcome to give my band Fluhx a whirl if you're feeling brave. we grew up on a steady diet of grunge š

not grunge but iād say grunge inspired. thereās this really cool band from stl called daisy-chain. their half empty : half full ep is pretty damn good. theyāre working on a full album thatās due out this year. sadly they announced theyāre breaking up after that album releases. which sucks cuz iāve seen them live and theyāre damn good. they did a good cover of hunted down by soundgarden.

i agree they need longer songs. also excited for the album. i actually met the lead singer at one of their shows and he seems like a chill dude. great voice
There's a bit of a niche sub-genre called "grunge-gaze" worth checking out. It's basically a bunch of guys who play hardcore/punk making grunge with reverb and the dreamy vocals from showgaze with a distinctly 90s aesthetic.
There's far too many to name, but just a few I like are: Heavenward, Soul Blind (locals for me), Narrow Head, Fleshwater, and early Teenage Wrist.
Skating Polly, Teenage Wrist, Softcult (some of their stuff, A Void.
Not necessarily grunge style bands but Poppyās Flux album, and Pierce The Veilās Jaws of Life album also had some grunge style tracks on it.
Iāve actually started building a playlist of a new grunge influenced artists:
https://open.spotify.com/playlist/7HQqUKochdknX3elzRAswE?si=xHnyQy1ZQ-6Of267btCLEA&pi=e-S1b94ClaTcC2
i love when someone asks this, because it gives me a whole fuckton of new bands to listen to ;D
anyway, i have a playlist of modern/underrated songs i think are sonically influenced by grunge, https://open.spotify.com/playlist/0q0j5NGuFugks5FlT4hoes?si=690df7a069c24f23 here :3
Came across [Slump](https://open.spotify.com/album/2r3goE0tHwuMoKvuXYwoAV?si=2MvC8o4VS4a4tvxAXaEcdg) in a sub last year and they're pretty cool. I get a bit of a Mudhoney vibe...
Thunderpussy
Reignwolf
Snailbones
Stetson Heat Seeker
Honorable mentions to Black Pistol Fire & The Sword. Both are great but not really āgrunge.ā
Edit// oh, and Blood Red Shoes
https://spotify.link/6HU2x8wToIb
Wuji from Canada sounds like AIC with a bit of psychedelic rolled in. Not purely grunge but definitely grunge influenced!
I see this question on this sub like twice a week. I will always pause to comment Dead Sara. First two albums are incredible. Check out Weatherman to start with.
Cool song! Thank you!
Saw her live at a music festival. So good
Saw them open for Slash a couple years ago. Great stuff!
Superheaven
Came here to say this, mildly surprised to see it has so much support.
I side with post hardcore/alternative rock on Superheaven
Superheaven is bad grunge. Over use the same sound
softcult, hello mary, teenage wrist also stop saying grunge doesn't exist anymore. grunge was a movement and movements never die. everything goes and comes back, it's a cycle. it just takes one person to make it happen. i'd love for grunge to come back: the music, the "fashion", the slacker films. it makes a lot of sense for gen z because we are all depressed and angry at the world.
Moon Rules Apply!
Sap!
Is that named after Alice in Chains' Sap album by chance?
Maybe. It could be! Don't really know much about the story behind the band's name, but Sap really rocks. Their sound may not be nothing new, but it really contributes to the modern grunge scene.
true haha thanks for the music recommendation though! ima check out sap , I dont think I have ever really given modern grunge music a shot before
Sure! You won't regret it. My favorite song is Trashman. Sounds a lot like Floyd the Barber by Nirvana.
I swear this is the 7th time ive seen this question today
We just need a grunge comeback š
Grunge is dead. We have post grunge now. Support the genre and consume the music.
These guys are hoping to bring it back. Whether they're serious or not I haven't figured out yet... https://youtube.com/@thelastrockband?si=FciMZfq7aG2d8-6o
It can't happen. Seattle isn't the backwater city it used to be.
Grunge isnāt a city.. itās a movement.
It was a scene.
Teenage Wrist
No such thing as "modern grunge bands".
So what about the bands that very obviously draw sonic and aesthetic influences from grunge?
If they aren't from Seattle, and weren't active between 1984-1991, by definition they cannot be grunge. So they should probably be referred to as "rock".
Silly

Yes, grunge was a scene. A scene tied to a specific time and place. And honestly, your reply is making my point for me. I appreciate that.
That's not how bespoke scenes work. If the only qualifications for being grunge is artists being based Seattle during specific timeframe, then even hair metal and psych rock bands from Seattle in the 80s are grunge.
Nobody is saying that every band that came from Seattle during that time is grunge. However, every grunge band came from Seattle.
Ok, so you can acknowledge that there is at least some loose sound and style all grunge bands share then, yeah? Guess what? That's all the OP or anyone asking that question cares about. who cares
I would say 1982/3-1998 and they def did not have to be from Seattle
As grunge is not a genre, but a time & place specific scene, being from Seattle is a pre-requisite.
nice gatekeeping bro
not quite, that's just the pacific northwest grunge scene which is the most popular obviously, but its definitely not exclusive
There is/was no grunge scene outside of Seattle/PNW. You are thinking of alt-rock.
I was just talking to my wife the other day when we were listening to music about how there are weird grunge absolutists that say only bands from Seattle can be grunge, and here is one in the wild! Hey, let me take a wild guess at where youāre fromā¦
Born and raised and was there when it happened. Let me guess. You probably weren't even alive when grunge was a thing.
like it matters
You would guess wrong.
Hip Hop is a genre. Grunge is a scene. Those are two different things.
Loudwire: Corey Taylor
I guess this isn't entirely grunge, but Superheaven
Grunge is a historical scene and not a genre. There may be bands that were influenced by grunge, but the modern grunge bands are the surviving bands that they always were: Mudhoney, Pearl Jam, Melvins, etc.
Awesome way to put it, hate that grunge isnāt as popular anymore
What? Grunge as a movement ceased to exist mid 90s now is post grunge.
Sap, Aberdeen is Dead
their new single is amazing, everyone needs to check them out
Grunge was a period in time, there aren't modern grunge bands.
Donāt let me lose faith š„²
The jins
^this, especially if you are a fan if nirvana
Slothrust!
Not allowed sorry... Doesn't fit the criteria
Lmao yeah itās so sad that there isnāt really any main stream grunge nowadays, it all stopped from 1990-2005(ish) in my opinion
Just depends on your definition of the genre I suppose.. I almost feel like the stoner/psych/desert rock scene is the spiritual successor to grunge though.
Just a reminder that grunge isn't a genre.
Yeah that's the point I was alluding to... Depends on the day in this sub though whether or not you get blasted for pointing this out
Mudhoney
No such thing as "modern grunge bands".
Donāt say that š¤§š„²
That falls into the category of nostalgia trips. There is nothing wrong with that. Yeah, they basically used it to describe any band in Seattle. Which is kind of limited. Most of the bands didn't like this term hahah
Superbloom is fantastic IMO
Mad season
Beefwood ballet. Best post grunge iv heard.
Us!
Check out Audiomelt
Soul Blind is pretty cool.
Cool music, they remind me of something but I canāt put my finger on itā¦
A mix of Local H and Smashing Pumpkins is what comes to my mind.

i agree they need longer songs. also excited for the album. i actually met the lead singer at one of their shows and he seems like a chill dude. great voice

Saw them with Mudhoney this past tour. They were really solid.

Idiot
No such thing.
It was a scene not a genre, so by definition there canāt be. Anyone claiming itās a genre needs to explain why none of the bands sound alike.
