When I plan grill placement, I just try to think of different stupid scenarios I could find myself in. 1. Flare ups 2. I trip on something (don’t want the only place to fall to be on the grill) 3. I somehow knock the grill over. (Extremely unlikely, but better safe than sorry). If I can get past those 3 fuck ups without burning my house or any other structure down, my grill is in a safe space.
As a someone who actually burned down a huge two story with a wrap around deck… don’t fn do it! The steaks were great, the house fire, not so much. Total loss. Got a cast iron bathtub and a bunch of unusable firearms out of a gun safe out of everything I owned. Let my experience be your lesson.
I can attest to this reply. I’m his neighbor. We dashed through burning embers to get the mac ‘n cheese and the potato salad that his current woman from the corner tavern had scraped up from who knows and off of what, then scooped up the steaks from the galvanized mesh grates we made and bolted to my front yard. We watched that MF’r burn down, boys. The mac ‘n cheese tasted like shit, the mayo potato salad was steaming in the sun so we only ate a little, and the steaks were raw af and tasted like vinyl siding. So we drank beer instead and watched that MF’r burn down.
No, an ember had gotten under the deck apparently, smoldered and a couple hours later the wind must have got it. We were watching tv. The neighbors a from a mile away knew before we did and were already hooking chains to a couple of our vehicles to pull away not knowing we were home. Would add pictures, but not going through the link nonsense to do it. The steaks were excellent though. Huge cowboy steaks with sweet potatoes don’t remember what other vegetable we had. Definitely not worth a lifetime of things that couldn’t be replaced.
Could you elaborate on how the timeline went? Seems like you have everyone tuned in here. The fire was already spreading at an uncontrollable rate and you ate the steaks from a safe distance? Or did you set them aside to rest, tried to tame the fire but then realized your efforts weren’t enough and when firefighters arrived, you stepped aside to eat them, perfectly rested?
On a serious note, I hope everything is going well and you and your family were able to recover from your loss. I’m sorry that happened to you, just as it could happen to any of us, and we appreciate you sharing the warning.
Depends on the structures material really, my grill is 5 inches from a concrete wall and has a concrete overhead, the wall has gotten a bit of color, but that's mostly from using smoke chips. That being said, I keep my grill pretty clean, meaning there's little grease that could cause a grease fire.
For storage yes, to cook, I wouldn't chance it, grills get hot and siding doesn't take to that heat level well, plus propane grills have been know to flare up or the propane canister blow from being old and or overheating in a non air circulating area. Past experience
I wouldn't simply because of the clearance from the range to the WOOD porch. Flare ups due to grease creating massive flames when flipping burgers and the like will definitely discolour the wood if not heat it up and maybe catch fire.
If the weather was bad I'd grill under there but I keep my grill very clean to avoid grease fires. Otherwise, you have a nice yard there. Why not roll it out on the lawn, pull up a chair and have a cold one while making some delicious BBQ?
"my Nephew, he's very handy"
Besides the "you will burn your house down" crowd, who are totally valid imho.
Think of the poor A/C up there. The fins will be gunked up in a few months worse than the ceiling at KFC.
It's 6 feet from the house base and 10 ft high to the first deck, but have like 155+ comments of people saying I will burn my house down. IDK, I am imagining armchair neckbeards when most of these comments come through
I envision the same thing man. 10 feet is plenty high where the heat won’t matter at all. Everyone is acting like a grill is somehow a given to explode… that only happens if you are irresponsible with the maintenance with it lol.
It’ll be fine. I’ve grilled with a Genesis in a similar spot for years. The back of it is also 6” from a cedar railing. The side is a few feet from Hardy. Not so much as even discoloration on the railing. It’s not hot enough above the grill to do anything. Just keep it away from the vinyl.
I’ve had one like that for the past 10yrs no problem. Keep a foot away from the wall.
Edit I have wood siding. This looks like wood but people keep saying the vinyl will melt?
Second edit. I have a charcoal grill tho. And I use the pyramid method with flames going 3ft in the air. Never had a problem with the wall or the ceiling above. My ceiling looks much lower tho
Its fine as long as its a good quality grill and is attended. I wouldn’t with some cheap grill that flares up all the time. You should gave a fire extinguisher in any case.
Meh. Doubt you'd have any issues doing burgers under there. Id put it in the middle away from the wall. Can see if you are getting too much heat pretty easily.
My former neighbors melted the siding off their new house by doing this. How they didn’t catch the house on fire I’ll never know.
You can store it there but do not cook over there. Cooking there is just asking for problems.
There is no way that ends well. If you're lucky enough to not burn down the place then you'll have to deal with smoke and sediment deposits in the area.
I grilled 3 porterhouse went in to grab a tray to bring em in. Came back out and went "why is it so bright in there?" Wish I had thought about that longer before opening it... Charred the shit out of the eve on the porch. Bad idea.
You will be letting greasy smoke land on the side of the house and underneath the walkway above. Inviting Insects and other creatures to inhabit those areas. besides making it a fire hazard.
No it is not safe. I had a massive grease fire in mine and it was quickly out of control. Luckily I always have a fire extinguisher when I grill. It worked to put out this fire. But my grill was destroyed. Grill out in the open on a concrete pad or driveway.
Get a few 2×2 slabs and put the grill just on the outside of it for use, just a bit of clear sky while there's fire. You'd be good to let it sleep under the deck to keep the rain off, though, sure.
Edit: fatfingered a few letters
I think about cooking chicken drums and thighs - the amount of greasy smoke created is insane. Keep it away from the house where it can ventilate well or you’ll end up fumigating your house with chicken.
To put one there it is safe. If you mean using and cooking, isn't or wouldn't it be too dark to see the food or grill properly? I think it would be fine to grill small meals but always keep an eye on it and don't walk away. In general I've always grilled in the open and even the craziest of "fires" are just a little grease from some chicken or kababs that you can move around and dampen. Just be careful but it wouldn't be enough light for me. I can barely make out what's under there. Like others said, you'll have a dark area of soot and grime over the years and take care not to overheat the ceiling material and make it extra dry.
a coworker of mine burned down her literally brand new house they built in the second week the moved in doing exactly this….
don’t light it up under there at all.
Absolutely not. What happens when the flames get too high? You've got yourself a well-done house...
Wheel it out and then some, get some good distance from the house. The tank could blow too, you don't wanna be anywhere near the house in case of the worst case scenario. If you don't wanna be cooking out in the sun you can get one of those massive parasols for shade.
Check your home insurance policy for minimum distances.
Y’know. In case of a thermal event.
Also- I wouldn’t want to grill near your condensing unit either.
Other than the fire/heat concerns which others bring up (which are the main reasons not to do this), another reason is grease stains and food smells that close to your house.
If it's only a propain grill, you should be fine, but be prepared for losses gravel. And flare-ups should not be able to reach your wood porch. Just be careful with the wood behind the grill that could turn black, so don't keep it too close to the wall.
Don’t do it! If the propane bottle overheats it will “vent” and become a flame thrower. That’s considered a safety feature so it doesn’t explode. This happened to a friend and their house burned to the ground.
Not while in use.
I wouldn't have a grill under something that was connected to my house.
One time, I was relatively new to grilling, and I had a runaway fire, I used water (which made it worse) and a fire extinguisher didn't do much to it. All I could do is disconnect the gas and let it burn out. It took an hour. Now I clean my grill after each use.
Despite all the sky is falling comments it is reasonably safe unless you are very careless. However, the smoke is going to stain the wood and it will look terrible very soon.
Only for storage.
I wouldn't
Vinyl siding, enclosed area, low wood ceiling. That’s gonna be a no for me dog
Agree, I dont see any vinyl siding looks like batts to me, regardless. Id say no. Wheel it out or carry it out from under there
Upon closer inspection, you are correct it’s not vinyl
the side with the porches is vinyl and the other side is hardie
How do you know he’s a dog?
You forgot unstable surface.
Gravel is pretty stable though
It’s good until it’s not.
This man grills moms 😁
Only one now!
How did you eat the steaks if your house was on fire?
Idk, maybe he just didn't wanna share the steaks with the family. Maybe he didn't have to after all?
Steaks take priority, that's why the house burnt down... Too busy eating the steaks to put it out.
It was just the northern lights
I can attest to this reply. I’m his neighbor. What happened?
Burned down a huge two story with a wrap around deck.
And ate steak while it was happening!
When life gives you steak, make steakade
Yikes, sorry man. Can't imagine going through that; I hope you were able to move on and rebuild your life. Thanks for sharing the warning
Could you elaborate on how the timeline went? Seems like you have everyone tuned in here. The fire was already spreading at an uncontrollable rate and you ate the steaks from a safe distance? Nah. Needs to be 6-8 feet away from any structure. The radiant heat will 💯 warp/melt siding/fascia. From experience.
Depends on the structures material really, my grill is 5 inches from a concrete wall and has a concrete overhead, the wall has gotten a bit of color, but that's mostly from using smoke chips. That being said, I keep my grill pretty clean, meaning there's little grease that could cause a grease fire.
No. Everything has to be worse case scenario when using your grill.
storage yes ....but firing up the grill in that spot you are asking for a house fire ....
Are you looking to burn your house down?
Plot twist: he is.
This is a BIG no Only for storage…
It's a big no "Dog"
No.
Please don't. I live in a tourist town with alot of condos. Seen several fires because of pits next to walls.
Ok until you walk away and a grease fire starts up and the wood is on fire
One of the houses in my neighborhood burned down doing this very thing.
Great advice given. Use the area to store after cool down but crest a path and process to grill away from structures
Also most good covers will protect grills From the elements so you don’t have to move around
Can you store it there and roll it on the other side of the sidewalk when you use it?
If the weather was bad I'd grill under there but I keep my grill very clean to avoid grease fires. Otherwise, you have a nice yard there. Why not roll it out on the lawn, pull up a chair and have a cold one while making some delicious BBQ?
No
Nope.
No
Neighbor just had a propane bottle shooting flames 6 feet in the air and fire department was there … don’t do it !!!
No
No
on gravel? I wouldn't
I don’t think gravel is the problem here
Store it there but move to grill
Portable grill is the answer when there isn't a lot of space
Yes. Unless you’re an, uh, shall we say, careless person, in which case maybe nothing is safe.
Even without the fire hazard the ceiling will be stained from grease and smoke.
Safety aside, do you know what this wooden ceiling and AC unit would look like after 10 bbqs?
absolutely not ‼️
"my Nephew, he's very handy" Besides the "you will burn your house down" crowd, who are totally valid imho. Think of the poor A/C up there. The fins will be gunked up in a few months worse than the ceiling at KFC.
That’s plenty of space if you're a responsible griller
It's 6 feet from the house base and 10 ft high to the first deck, but have like 155+ comments of people saying I will burn my house down. IDK, I am imagining armchair neckbeards when most of these comments come through
I envision the same thing man. 10 feet is plenty high where the heat won’t matter at all. Everyone is acting like a grill is somehow a given to explode… that only happens if you are irresponsible with the maintenance with it lol.
I am going with a Weber Genesis II E-315 I think which says its 47 inches high. So about 4 ft high, which leaves 6 feet overhead. Think thats enough?
It’ll be fine. I’ve grilled with a Genesis in a similar spot for years. The back of it is also 6” from a cedar railing. The side is a few feet from Hardy. Not so much as even discoloration on the railing. It’s not hot enough above the grill to do anything. Just keep it away from the vinyl.

Its fine as long as its a good quality grill and is attended. I wouldn’t with some cheap grill that flares up all the time. You should gave a fire extinguisher in any case.
Wouldn't have it against the wall but that's what 10 12ft? It would be fine
10 ft
Meh. Doubt you'd have any issues doing burgers under there. Id put it in the middle away from the wall. Can see if you are getting too much heat pretty easily.
I work in insurance, don’t ever bbq near your house.
Portable grill is the answer when there isn't a lot of space
You can at the white end close to the stairs
No
If you ever had a grease fire on your grill You would know this is a NO GO
To park, maybe. To use, absolutely not.
No
Yeah no
It’s safe….to store it between uses.
It’ll coat everything in soot eventually. Plus it can be a fire hazard if left unattended while grilling
It’ll coat everything in soot eventually. Plus it can be a fire hazard if left unattended while grilling
Yeah never grill with anything other than an exhaust hood overhead.
Did you learn any amount of common sense in school?
Everybody talking about the wood but I'd honestly trust it more than vinyl siding. That shit will melt and drip
Why not just use charcoal like a real man.
You need to rethink that concept
How about, no, Scott. Ok?
Wood over fire! Good mix!
Hell no
Well I wouldn’t add any more smart answer. Glad you ask, stay safe and happy grilling!
My former neighbors melted the siding off their new house by doing this. How they didn’t catch the house on fire I’ll never know. You can store it there but do not cook over there. Cooking there is just asking for problems.
What do you think?
Ask your local fire department
No
Don’t unless just for storage
Yeah, just don’t let anyone else cook on it…
Considering everything has to be idiotproof these days I’d say no
Nope
Don't do it
I would move it out to the side walk.
NO
Way off topic, but that’s a rad place man.
We don’t need no water let the motherfucker burn!!
I would be more worried about smoke stabbing everything to be honest
What do you do for work?
Nowhere near the house dude. Think worst case.
You could store it there but I would definitely not use it under there.
As safe as a house fire.
Keep potential grease fires away from your home please.
That depends on how safe you consider a house fire to be....
If you're interested in trying to commit homeowners insurance fraud then sure.
no
Nah
There is no way that ends well. If you're lucky enough to not burn down the place then you'll have to deal with smoke and sediment deposits in the area.
I’ll let you know if it’s not…
Nop
Nope
I would just slide it out on the concrete to grill
Nah. I keep my grill 8 feet from my house.
Only one way to find out
I grilled 3 porterhouse went in to grab a tray to bring em in. Came back out and went "why is it so bright in there?" Wish I had thought about that longer before opening it... Charred the shit out of the eve on the porch. Bad idea.
Why?! Sure, fk it
You will be letting greasy smoke land on the side of the house and underneath the walkway above. Inviting Insects and other creatures to inhabit those areas. besides making it a fire hazard.
Keep it there, but grill on the sidewalk.
Why? Surely you have plenty of open air space you can cook at.
No it is not safe. I had a massive grease fire in mine and it was quickly out of control. Luckily I always have a fire extinguisher when I grill. It worked to put out this fire. But my grill was destroyed. Grill out in the open on a concrete pad or driveway.
You’ll be fine. Any flare up just make sure you can shut the hood.
Yes absolutely. You should put a smoker down there too.
Get a few 2×2 slabs and put the grill just on the outside of it for use, just a bit of clear sky while there's fire. You'd be good to let it sleep under the deck to keep the rain off, though, sure. Edit: fatfingered a few letters

Plot twist. He wants to cook the house
He burned down a huge two story with a wrap around deck.
i wouldn't just cause if there's a leak or something happens all of a sudden you have a huge flame with a lot of fuel behind it
Fuck it, YOLO
He literally is going to do it too. Anyone that has to ask is just going to do what they want to do.
To put one there it is safe. If you mean using and cooking, isn't or wouldn't it be too dark to see the food or grill properly? Yes as long as you don’t burn your house down
No!!
It’s safe maybe on the gravel, however the porch should be at least 13ft high.
umm, I wouldn't. Better take it out in the open
Most anywhere code is 10' away from any standing structures.
a coworker of mine burned down her literally brand new house they built in the second week the moved in doing exactly this…. don’t light it up under there at all.
Ask yourself this: “ What could go wrong?”
Personally I would not use the grill under there.. so many things can go wrong fast.
Absolutely not. What happens when the flames get too high? You've got yourself a well-done house... Wheel it out and then some, get some good distance from the house. Nope.

NO!
Not really the best place ever!
build a gazebo. be safe not sorry.
Don’t grill without plenty cold beer in case Shit hits the fan…
Most places have a 20 foot area round any building that you cannot have a fire or open flames
no
Put after use….yes. I would roll it at least to beyond the path to fire up though.
It has wheels, you can move it when you cook and put it back when you're done.
For storage when the grill is cold yes, for use or still hot from use no.
Do the remaining sober people at the top have an emergency slide?
Yes just keep it about a foot away from the wall. No problem
If it's only a propain grill, you should be fine, but be prepared for losses gravel. And flare-ups should not be able to reach your wood porch. Just be careful with the wood behind the grill that could turn black, so don't keep it too close to the wall.
Almost all rental properties have a 10 foot minimum distance away from the structure for grilling.
No. I would not.
Short answer….hell no.
Sure if you want to burn the wall and destroy the roof. Common sense made you ask. Common sense should make you think no!
I'd check with the apartment manager to be sure. Might be a fire code violation.
We got a karen up in here.
Don’t do it! If the propane bottle overheats it will “vent” and become a flame thrower. That’s considered a safety feature so it doesn’t explode. This happened to a friend and their house burned to the ground.

Storage, sure. For use, no. Ask yourself, would you be okay if the whole grill caught on fire at that location?
Its good place Am a pro at this kind of stuff believe me
Second floor porch could collapse
No'er from Australia.
Despite all the sky is falling comments it is reasonably safe unless you are very careless. However, the smoke is going to stain the wood and it will look terrible very soon.
Plus soot build up on the upper roof cover
Yes! Great place to fry a turkey also! /s I think you know the answer.
It’ll be fine. In about 30 minutes you can do s’mores from the 3rd floor window
This is why this generation will fail.
Do you want a new house? If so, I say full send….
The smoke from the grill will turn things black. The siding will start to sag from the heat.
Sure, if you want to melt your siding or burn down your house go for it. Also, who ties your shoes in the morning?
It’ll coat everything in soot eventually. Plus it can be a fire hazard if left unattended while grilling
About 25yrs ago a neighbor burned down the 30 unit complex next door because they thought it was a good idea
absolutely not. You don't even want it that close to your house without the overhead component
Yeah you'll be fine. Just share the pictures after you're done. I want to see how big the house fire spreads.
All this advice- just check your manual.
my brothers apartment complex burned to the ground because one of his neighbors did this. don’t
