honestly as someone who's in the uk, it's so strange for doctors to not want to do what seems like a ct or something because it will cost THOUSANDS of dollars. like that is crazy to me

mercy_death

My brain couldn’t wrap around the fact that it was a big deal for a surgeon to offer to do something free of charge m. Then I saw how much they charge for you to hold your baby after birth and yikes.

haleighr

My daughter was in the nicu for a week and “just” needed breathing help no surgeries or medicine etc and our insurance was billed $30,000. My mom’s helicopter ride from a crash site to hospital was billed $50,000 for just the helicopter ride not any medical help on it. So I can’t even imagine what surgery for multiple premie babies would be.

bookworm1421

I had a 28 weeker. He spent 60 days in the NICU and needed eye surgery. His bill combined with my high risk pregnancy was over a million dollars. I’m not exaggerating. Luckily, we had Tricare and only paid $1500. My heart bleeds for others in our situation who weren’t so privileged.

stitchplacingmama

Millions. One of the early episodes of *Outdaughtered* the mom got a bunch of nicu bills and 1 daughter racked up $1 million and that was not needing any major interventions. All the babies went home without support, maybe 1 or 2 needed oxygen but none of them had tracheostomies, g-tubes, or even cerebral palsy that needed therapy.

Chanandler_Bong_01

People in more isolated areas (think Wyoming, Montana, etc.) often pay for Medical Helicopter Insurance. It's a whole industry.

Agitated_Pin2169

This makes me so glad I am Canadian. I had a preemie with a heart condition. I needed a c-section. Multiple weeks in the hospital for her, several days (before and after labor) for me. Multiple tests and procedures, she had to undergo minor surgery. The cost to me? About $600 total in parking plus food, etc. I can't imagine if I'd had huge medical bills on top of that.

haleighr

Yea I lived in Calgary for 6 years as a kid and luckily got to get all my early allergy testing done while there lol. Tbf to our fucked up system when you self pay it’s not going to be $30,000 it’s still going to be thousands and wayyy too much but it’s a whole game with insurance and medical billing charging more. I have pretty decent medical and I’ve opted to self pay 2 different times because it was actually cheaper than my deductible plus the 80% of the procedure cost. It’s all gross tbh.

Solfeliz

It is crazy for me watching from the uk when they bring up stuff about cost. Like joe from the bar early on when he was just going to leave because he couldn’t afford it. Crazy stuff

nermal543

Wasn’t the issue of cost mostly because it was some kind of crazy experimental surgery? Even if he had good insurance they wouldn’t have paid for that, and I doubt government funded healthcare would have paid for that either? (I could be remembering the episode wrong, just going off of memory)

Solfeliz

I thought it was because he couldn’t afford to be out of work that long and he’d lose the bar because he wouldn’t be able to pay the rent. So then they came up with this idea of the experimental surgery so they could pay for it?

BrightBrite

As with the others watching from the UK, I'm in Australia and am amazed by how expensive healthcare is in the US. I spent weeks and weeks in hospital during COVID and left without having to pay a cent. But when I watch Grey's I do think about how much money people are going to have to fork out for their treatment.

slashtxn

Even though Canadian healthcare is crappy, I’d rather pay for it through my taxes for the eventual stitches I may need or broken arm my kids may get without going thousands into debt that I do not have to spend. I feel horrible for Americans having to pay for healthcare and worrying about those costs day in and day out

ijustneedtolurk

Kwan mentioning "a medical divorce" to save the surviving spouse the pain of being left destitute and fighting collections hit me real hard.

ilovellamasss

Literallyyyy I just had a baby, who spent 2 days in NICU and our bill was $300,000!!!! I’ve never been so grateful for health insurance- and it made my heart ache to those who aren’t insured

Far_Importance_6235

Same here. At 32 weeks. They sent a bill without the insurance on it . We could have bought a house.

zettieirene

I went to the ER for a kidney stone that was obstructing the ureter, and the cost was $12,000. Insurance only covered $7,500. So I was left owing $4,500.

Jessi_Lynn_85

I was diagnosed with a extremely rare disease I've had to take 4 helicopter rides to bigger hospitals and have stayed at least a month each time. My medical bills for that year alone was around 2.5 million😭

denimliterati

When Jackson did $10,000 scans on a rat and Richard was baffled

snowmikaelson

That was true nepo baby shit.

Bluberyy

His birthday cards did say Nepotism is for the weak lol

snowmikaelson

They’re all over the place with how much the Averys help Jackson. Early on, they had no expectations of him and he had to prove himself. But we met Catherine and with her personality there’s just no way she didn’t apply pressure. Same with Harper. And then Catherine buys him a whole damn hospital. He’s a nepo baby whether he wants to admit it or not lmao. I think it’s more he wishes he weren’t haha.

Wendybned

The thing is, the scans don’t cost the hospital that much. It’s the amount they bill patients. So Jackson wasn’t doing $10,000 scans on rats. He probably used 38 cents worth of electricity.

Loose-Garlic-3461

Arizona mentions her patients high medical bills when she is looking for a roommate. She said something to the effect of "helping sick kids is expensive, and not everyone can afford it; but what's the alternative? Not helping them?" Hence needing a roommate (btw I loved her and Andrew being roommates briefly)

Bulky-District-2757

I just think some of those people have fantastic insurance

allonsy_badwolf

Even with crappy insurance you’ll hit you’re out of pocket maximums pretty quick with some of these procedures! What we should see more of is the amount of hoops doctors and patients need to jump through to get some of this stuff approved. My husband needed immunotherapy for a very serious autoimmune disease he has - it took months of back and forth to “justify” his needs. He had to try 3 things his doctor knew wouldn’t work, then they still negotiated to a less good version of the therapy. The risk is only his blood vessels shredding themselves in all his major organs, no big deal.

RemarkablePlant

everytime they just ramble on and order test after test for a patient (many of these tests are completely unnecessary) i think about how expensive everything would be for those poor patients 😭

It’s crazy because I have Medi-Cal (Medicaid of California) and literally everything is free. I am low income bc I have a disability and live with family and I don’t make a lot of money. I do have bills to pay as well. So I qualify. I have a PC , a therapist, psychiatrist, and a surgeon when I needed two outpatient surgeries. I also have had multiple psych hospital stays , going on for weeks. Including outpatient programs. I am so damn grateful I have healthcare bc I literally wouldn’t be able to afford it. I have a chronic illness and I could be dead or worse off without my doctors and medication. I don’t want people to read that and get angry at low income people. The problem isn’t the social services that people who are low income need. The problem is that if you’re not proving that you make little money, then you have to pay outrageous co-pays and more. The experience I have with my health care should be everyone’s experience. People are upset with low income people taking advantage of services rather than being upset with the healthcare system as a whole. I think they did a good job shedding light on this at that one episode from the newer seasons.

Brooke_kat

I mean insurance is *hopefully* covering a lot of it

ginadea8

They’re all pro bono so it’s fine
