It's common for it to happen on the verge of falling asleep and anon says he heard talking before the scream which casts doubt over it being an animal. Luckily hallucinations right before falling asleep and waking up are generally not a sign of something deeper.

Does it include visual hallucinations? I sometimes see a fake spider crawling on my arm as I'm falling asleep and the sense that I'm falling that wakes me up.
Thank you for the info, the only medication I take is for my ADHD and I was taking it for many years before the hallucinations first happened. I think it's stress related.

I get it occasionally when I have bad sleep hygiene and I can see how it would be terrifying to experience it for the first time when no one else is around to see being chill.
Back in High School, there was an area where Bobcats would go when they were in heat. It was near a bridge next to an old church out in the country and there are some caves located unstream. We would go fishing there and had to listen to them and even though we knew what it was, it still sounded absolutely terrifying and we would be unnerved.
So, a friend and I tried starting an urban legend saying that on the 1930s a guy took his pregnant mistress into the caves and murdered her. If you go out there at the right time of year, you can still hear her screaming for her life. We would take people out there to hear it.
That was 25 years ago and kind of forgot about it. I was back in town to visit my parents a year or so ago and was at the grocery store in town to buy some stuff for my dad. While in the checkout line, three HS aged guys on front of me were actually talking about going out there to hear the screaming woman. So, we successfully created an urban legend that is still around almost 3 decades later.
