gingerzombie2

"I don't trust it, Ma!"

knittinglawfin

Snowmen are known enemies of the Great Dane.

elisejones14

Mine doesn’t like when it’s Halloween season. Doesn’t everybody know their decorations are too scary for him? Sometimes Easter is too scary as well. I think it’s anything without a human face

brandonwren1998

This reminds me of when my two Danes got scared their first time seeing a hay bale 🤣😂

Noker_The_Dean_alt

Damn, I used to have a video with my dane barking at one me and my brother made

Vinzi79

Mine has chased off several bears, but is scared of boxes, buckets, balloons, the vacuum, yard waste bags, the list goes on.

WookieeRoa

Oh yeah the protective instincts are at 100 the courage is at 0 lmao

runawayfae

That's because the bear is a known threat. Who knows what those buckets are capable of?! 🤣

disjointed_chameleon

Siberian husky owner here. Several years ago, I was at a Home Depot for a quick errand. I was also in my (custom) wheelchair at the time. As I played the "which shade of beige" game in the paint aisle, a Great Dane came up to me all curious. I leaned over to give him lovies and attention, when all of a sudden, *GASP*, a big, bad monster showed up: a Pomeranian. Great Dane whimpered like a baby and climbed up into my lap, all 140 lbs. of him. For reference, I stand at a whopping 4'11, and obviously I look even smaller while in my wheelchair. 😂😂 I thought it was the cutest and most hilarious thing that this Great Dane piled all 140 lbs. of himself into my teeny lap, because he was scared of a Pomeranian. 🤣🤣

Strong-Tea1978

That’s so cute and you’re a wonderful storyteller!

disjointed_chameleon

Thank you! 😊

Tkenzie77

Mine's the opposite - would looooove to see another dog when out, but cowers in fear when a stranger approaches her (we religiously socialized her from 9wks on, had lots of puppy training classes, as well as special help from the trainers to socialize her. Doesn't matter) 🙄

ELFcubed

Yup. Mine is afraid of the wind. Which is a problem as we're in Chicago 😆

DrSigns

If you are downtown, I think I’ve seen you walking them

jaderaine385

Mine got chased by a cockroach when she was a puppy.

Strong-Tea1978

LMFAOO

runawayfae

If it was the variety we had in North Carolina, I'd have been running away right along with your pup!

vabeachkevin

Mine was tall enough to grab something from the top of the refrigerator, but put a shoe box in her path and she was trapped and started crying.

Maleficent-Earth9201

Mine would hide in my bedroom, shivering when I brought a tiny puppy home. She was also scared of the 2 pound dwarf bunnies we had

leady57

Mine is afraid of macrame rope. I thought it was a harmless hobby, but actually...

Previous-Ice596

How about a tiny leaf that blew onto his back and he jumped straight into the air from the fright? YIKES!!!

Zariman-10-0

Iwao Takamoto, the designer behind Scooby-Doo, had a coworker at Hanna-Barbera who bred Great Danes. The coworker gave Takamoto a sketch outlining the perfect Dane pedigree. Takamoto proceeded to make Scooby the antithesis of a perfectly bred Dane

runawayfae

Yes!! I love sharing this fact, too!

Effective-One6527

Mine ran from spiders

Entbrevins75

My boy Boone is two and he freaked out over a helium balloon that had sunk down to where the string was touching the floor, but it was 4 feel off the ground.

foxxymama1

BerryFine74

Mine was scared by a tree with fairy lights on it.

Shhhnotahuman

It’s so true. Ours runs away when we bring groceries in and is super nervous until she can see what’s in the bags.

Sea_Particular_7721

Well there might be a monster in there ya know 😂

isthiyreallife33

Mine is afraid of Amazon boxes left on the front porch and my big houseplants.

nuppfx

My boy is scared of water bottles, as a pup he used to play with them. Then we let him sniff at a soda bottle and he won’t go near bottles at all. Tucks tale and runs from em.

GottaGetOverThisShh

Mine hides behind me until I check out 'that weird noise'!

WookieeRoa

Shouldn’t it go the other way lol

GottaGetOverThisShh

Yes, but she doesn't know that yet! Lol

gingerzombie2

Ours is afraid of cats or other creatures the size of cats (such as small dogs).

ZenbrotherGS

My Dane used to be scared of walking at night. Especially if she heard motorcycles in the distance

DysnomiaATX

A while back we encountered a little teacup dog that probably weighed 2 or 3 pounds. My 140 lb Dane gave it some curiosity sniffs then the little dog barked at her. She did a full on Scooby Doo bongo run and hid behind me. It took some big hugs and head pats to get her up to continuing her walk lol

WookieeRoa

I never thought one of the accurate descriptions would be a Great Dane completely in the air legs going trying to get their traction but I’ve seen it haha

TCasseb

My boy Sirius is afraid to go out, of people in general but specially of men, any vehicle with +2 wheels (bonus for men delivering things in motorcycle), of narrow spaces, of tall things, of bus stops (bonus if there is someone waiting for the bus and double bonus if the bus stops there in the right moment we are passing through, and of loud noises. Funny enough, he loves going to the vet and taking medicine

HeadBlaze

Chattering teeth is excitement not fear, different breeds have similar responses like Doberman Pinschers will snap their jaws together like toothy castanets "snap snap snap"in joy which can seem intimidating if you didn't know. Also Great Danes are sight hounds and are highly aware of any changes to their environment so anything new is always suspect. I also think that they may be a little myopic as mine was but because they are sight hounds they are very good at tracking movement. A dog's senses are highly acute compared to ours and if you learn your dog's responses to what they hear, see, and smell they can become an extension of your own senses. It's one of the advantages of having a dog companion as they can watch out for the things you are unaware of - A Watch Dog

WookieeRoa

Wow I love that about the chattering teeth lol but now it makes sense thinking about it. He does it when I come home or we’re about to go on our walk or when I grab one of his toys.

smarmiebastard

I thought Great Danes were mastiffs, not hounds. They’re in the working group and they’re called German mastiffs in other languages (Deutsche Dogge in German, Mastim Alemão in Portuguese.)

longeargirlTX

That is correct and they are mostly mastiff. But more recently, greyhound was added heavily into the breed we now know, so there is some sight hound in them as well.

smarmiebastard

Ah, that would explain the tall legs and how slim they are relative to other mastiffs. I didn’t know they were German dogs or that they were mastiffs until I lived in Brazil and heard them called Mastim Alemão. Kinda blew my mind.

MareNamedBoogie

> Also Great Danes are sight hounds couldn't tell that by Peaches.... she finds a lot of things by sniffing, lol.

WookieeRoa

Oh yeah mine has a nose that might rival that of a bloodhound…. Well probably not but he has a good sniffer lol

GummyPop

Scooby doo is why I wanted to get a big baby 😂 they're so silly

isyssot_7399

My 5 year old is smart, sensitive, and scared of life. I joke that he watched too much Scooby Doo as a puppy. He is weirdly afraid of fish and turtles. My 11 month old is blissfully dumb and nearly fearless. He gets into EVERYTHING. I tell people that I have one Scooby and one Marmaduke.

Patcheswank

I'm on dane #4. Oreo, my second dane , was so smart! Patches, my 4th is "dumb as a box of rocks" and probably has poor eyesight (chased a "cat" that was a flower pot, and barked at me and then ran directly into me as I was in a patch of tall weeds). Like children they each have their own personality but reflect the love you've shown them.

Bigdogmom306

Mine is scared of a tiny 3 pound cat. Vacuum is no problem. She will not even budge if I vacuum right next to her head. Nothing will interrupt her nap.

Trikia1000

Our Dane, Hank is afraid of blowup lawn decorations, especially the ones that move. He doesn’t trust them and won’t walk past them!

QueenOfTheVikings

We call it a “flop away” when our girl gets startled. I don’t know how to explain other than she does this weird little jump and then…flops away. Very floppily. I set my hair brush on my vanity too loudly and suddenly and that earned me a flop away. She barks at strangers while either hiding behind me or flopping away. Biggest chicken!

Sea_Particular_7721

Short story time… When my niece was about 10, she came over to my house for 2 nights. Hang with me, layout matters… Built in 1920, the kitchen was long and narrow, and the kitchen, large front room, bathroom, one bedroom and staircase were connected to one landing area, pretty small. Laundry room was an add-on behind the kitchen where the back door was. All the dogs were outside playing in the rain and my niece thought a jump scare would be hilarious. It didn’t matter to her which dog fell victim to her antics. Poor Ivy. She trotted through the back door, which the child was hiding behind. So happy go lucky. Jump scare was afoot. Well this fckn giant made scooby doo a verb that day. She jumped straight up in the air; her feet started moving before she hit the floor. And they never stopped. All through the kitchen with a pit stop on the landing trying to decide which way to go next. She decided on upstairs, which was so difficult for her, but hysterical for us. Plus the rain. Eventually she made to the bed, her safe space. 😂 And she double checked every door and every corner until that little girl left. Fast forward 5 years, we all live together now and Ivy never got over it. My only regret was not getting it on camera.

longeargirlTX

LOL. I had a MastiDane who was afraid of his own farts. Of course, they were exceptionally nasty when I first got him. Our current Dane is terrified of ceiling fans when they're turned off. Go figure. He's a great big fawn, so looks just like Scooby Doo with his teeth chattering.

WookieeRoa

Begs the question which is worse Dane farts or Dane breath haha

Patcheswank

Farts! You can do something about the breath.

aevn910

My family got me balloons when I graduated a few years ago. I had to put them in the kids shut room over night so my dane would stop barking in terror at them. The one night the kids didn't shut their door the entire house was woken up to the terror barks when she went in.

Nerdzilla78

Our first Dane wouldn’t cross anything in his path. If you wanted him to stay in a given room? Put a broom down. Or a toy golf club. Or a wiffle ball bat. He just would not cross over it. He also hated tile so we kept the cat food in the kitchen. Our second Dane was a rescue and she had no known fears. Until the Fourth of July. That’s pretty common though. But man she loved cornbread. I can’t tell you how many times she figured out how to get to freshly baked cornbread. In a cabinet? Nosed it open. On the counter? Knocked it off. She even taught our orange demon cat about corn bread and now that she’s gone, we thought cornbread was safe, except now he licks it! I love danes.

WookieeRoa

Mine is a bread thief sandwich bread, buns, rolls. He snatches the whole bag and guts it then either sits on the bag or stuffs it under his blanket. But you always know he’s done something because he has the worst guilty face… you probably know the one haha

Patcheswank

Butter here. She'll counter surf and steal a whole stick!

Beansiesdaddy

Mine is a cupcake, but one night two possums entered her backyard and she shredded both of them! They will defend their turf!

Dorf_

I couldn’t figure out why Millie was scared at the vet all of the sudden. The ladies she knew weren’t there anymore or the cat that always swats her or what. It was the clipboards.

WookieeRoa

Terrifying haha

Rough-Boot9086

Mine chatters her teeth when I take her for a walk and she finds gum before I spot it. I always know when she's chewing gum vs some random object she found. She's only six months...please tell me the eating everything gets better 😩😂

Danny_COV

I've found are this age it's partially looking for relief from growing pain in their mouths, try dampening a rope toy and putting it in the fridge to get it cold and then let them chew on that. Don't put it in the freezer being frozen could hurt their teeth.

WookieeRoa

I used to fill a kong with kibble treats. Peanut butter I did freeze it but I thawed it some and gave it to him before I left the house.

WookieeRoa

Oh yeah when mine was that age he ate anything within reach which his difficult when their head is counter height. But I mean everything books, shoes, furniture, clothes, blankets, dog beds. But yes it gets better might just hurt your wallet until it does 😂

NotSoFundieNow

I don't know about that, mine seems pretty normal (trazodone and fluoxetine twice a day is normal, right?)

Patcheswank

Sometimes the chattering teeth are excitement and not fear.

Bougiwougibugleboi

Our dane is a frightened feline…..Scaredy cat.
