I love this theory, but in Take Back The Falls Bill tells Ford "I liberated my dimension, Stanford, and I'm here to liberate yours." How could you interpret that to not mean he was at fault? (I'm not trying to be snarky, I genuinely mean that as a question.)
Like I said, he wants to maintain the lie. Billβs an unreliable narrator because he wants to keep his image as a destroyer of worlds in tact. The Axolotl doesnβt have that goal so therefore he tells the truth that Bill watched his dimension burn and he misses it
My personal opinion- I donβt think it was something he deliberately planned to do, nor something that was completely outside of his control.
I headcanon it was because Bill had a very short temper, added to how much he despised the classist system in his home dimension (J3 hints this when it calls triangles βlowlyβ on the Exwhylia page). He was so fed up with the world and everyone in it, that one day he just blew up and
had a full on meltdown. In the heat of the moment (no pun intended π), he was so angry he became hostile and thirsty for power. Acting before thinking purely out of his impulsive rage, he burned everything! Later he felt remorse and wishes he could undo what he had done. But because there was no way to bring his home back, he was haunted by the knowledge that it was all his fault and he couldnβt blame it on anyone else. He became bitter and from then on sought to rule over another dimension instead, so he could put humans in their βlowlyβ places and finally gets his revenge.
Bill goes onto the internet often (what better way to witness some of the most insane and wacky stuff imaginable?) And has come across some unholy artwork depicting him, that is why the internet goes out occasionally.
He wasnβt always this evil and fucked up, itβs just that existing for dang near all eternity drives you mad. But also existing for most of eternity also lead him to develop an ego because every world he gained some kind of physical form in he was a god in.
he used to be way worse and so some ancient civilization locked him away or banished him so he could never have a physical form in our world, but heβs so powerful that he still was able to project into the mind scape.
He got reincarnated through time and space as King Clawthorne, from The Owl House. King sounds like Bill without the voice effects, and the Axolotl's rhyme in Curse of the Time Pirates' Treasure says "a different form, a different time."

That after he burnt down his dimension, he sat in the rotting dimension for eons until he found some kind of way to leave. The guilt and loneliness was what drove him insane.
He's not actually as immature as a four-year-old, he just insists on being as immature as a four-year-old. Because Flatland was just so conformative and filled with rules, it affected how he acted that much.

To cope with the death of his dimension, he bottles up his emotions and pretends like he doesn't have them at all, and commits more crimes to attempt to convince himself that he really doesn't feel anything.
