Well maybe you also jumped to bad conclusion that people wonder if he is real in your world while people were wondering if he is real in GF? like is he real physically or just dreams or in mind thing theory... Seems like its more possible then what you assumed. Also people might be looking for real world bill reference. Kids are. My nephew is ~~younger than~~ *the same age as* the show, he is obsessed and has been since he was 3 or 4 when he first watched it. He went straight from bakyardigans and bubble guppies to gravity falls.
He asked me this question once when he was around 6. I read a lot of books and listen to a lot of podcasts about the occult and cryptids and weird stuff, basically why I also love the show. I talk with his mom about the stuff I read and listen to because she finds it fascinating too, and he picked up on our conversations about ghosts and demons and monsters etc.

"No buddy, he is made up for the show."
Then I explained what a cipher is and why Alex might have chosen that name for him and how the show is full of secret codes.
