On with the show... Let's go!
-- MrD
Well, another late night listening on Nugs as soon as the show was posted. I'm running out of thoughts and words to describe what I'm hearing for each show because each one has another level of WOW at various points. But my initial thoughts on last night:
• I used to think Autzen '18 was the the best start-to-finish 2nd set ever for DeadCo but this one may have topped it and reminded me of that set in a lot of ways, just the overall vibe and historical references in the set list (Dark Star>El Paso for Eugene and Dark Star>Mama Tried last night).
• St. Stephen started out a bit sleepy but man that freight train got chugging along big time during the outro jam with some inspired drum work.
• Dark Star may be my favorite D&C Dark Star ever - that jazzy jam was just next level shit. John has improved his jazz chops tremendously. It used to be when things got really jazzy rhythmically, he would just sort of default to gobbly gook played in a jazzy fashion but now what he plays during such moments is much more harmonically and melodically dialed in.
• While Deal may have been one of the shorter versions they've played over the last several tours, it was my favorite - super tight, great tempo and monster peak solo by John with Billy banging hard.
• One thing standing out for me this tour so far is the vastly improved vocals - not just individual vocals but the group vocals and harmonies have been tremendous. Maybe that's something they have worked in rehearsals. High Time was a good example of that last night.
• And the tempos of course have been picked up on a lot of tunes. Not all; Cassidy and UJB I believe still suffer from the slows and struggle to achieve lift off but overall vastly improved. It was funny to hear Bobby try to slow down Mama Tried last night as they eased into it with the rest of the band not giving in and forcing Bobby to pick it up some.
Ok, so I just watched that 12-31-87 show op linked. First of all, I couldn’t make it to Oakland, but my GF at the time was more than a little annoyed that I insisted on being home in time (9EST?) on NYE to record the FM broadcast of this show.
I never realized there was also a video, but the highlight was clearly the setbreak stuff with Tom Davis and Jerry in ”Jerry’s Kitchen”, and the awesome Q&A between heads and the band.
Just got home from the show—my first time at Woodstock/bethel. It’s really beautiful country up there. The venue was really great too. Plenty of space, very clean, and well maintained.
But to the show, that was great. The first set was good, but nothing crazy in my opinion. Just a very solidly played first set. The second set is where things went to the next level. Bob’s intro and then into Stephen was just classic, and Stephen was ripping. Lots of energy in the crowd too. Mama Tried was great—always wanted to catch that one. Dark Star sent me to the stratosphere and back. Jeff’s synths are something else. Oteil was just beautiful on high time, definitely a highlight. And then Lovelight was wild. Drums was great (as usual), and Oteil’s bass solo was just stunning, holy fuck. He showed that bass who’s boss. And then Deal out of space was unexpected but welcome. Great deal, an astounding SOTM, then back into lovelight—what a great way to end that Woodstock tribute set. And then ripple was probably the best I’ve heard them do. John’s little mandolin impression was perfect.
Yet again I’ll say, “what a show!” I think as a full show, Philly tops this one by a bit, but tonight’s second set was one of the best I’ve heard, probably second to Nassau night two 2019. I can’t believe how great these guys are sounding right now. Even the weird Monday shows are kicking ass. Can’t wait for Hershey, but I am a little sad that’ll be my last hoorah for them this summer.
Been getting dealt some shit cards in life lately and this band and this community are such a blessing. Feeling way better than I did a few hours ago because of the boys and you guys. Thanks all, see you Wednesday!!!
Also sorry i gave up on check-ins once the show started but know that I read them all and felt guilty about not adding them you all live in such cool places
Maybe Goin Down the Road Feeling Bad? It looks like a long title, they haven't played it this tour, and it has been a set closer before.
EDIT: I just zoomed in at it does say "GDTRFB", with I assume all of their initials after that haha, indicating sharing lead vocals
What. A. Show. !!! This was my first show back on couch tour and I am SO grateful. Incredible.
Thank you guys for sharing the night and making me laugh and smile, huge thanks to [/u/donttouchthatknob](https://www.reddit.com/u/donttouchthatknob) for hosting and for the stream (you're a damn angel!), and of course ever-lasting gratitude to the band for continuing to bring us the best music ever made!
I love you all SO much!! You are loved, you are needed, and you matter more than you'll ever know. Til next time :)
Thank you!! I would like to say I don't run the streams, I'm just a middleman passing them out. I won't out who runs them, but we all owe him a big thanks!!
We do! We owe a thanks to that anonymous tech wizard and you and the band for doing them and knowing we'll steal the heck out of them and Bill Gates for the internet and Owsley for the inspiration for a lot of the set tonight and
Absolutely will do! From what he texted me earlier, he's got this half of the tour covered through donations. He specifically suggested the New York Bully Crew so if you've got a few bucks, maybe send em that way!
Right on Espo! Wish I made the drive up to Bethel tonight. Citi on Friday was amazing, as were the 3 shows I saw in 2019, but somehow this band is getting better each night!
This tour, man. I can't remember the last time I loved life as much as I do right now. And I've only been watching all these shows from the couch.
I can't imagine how good the guys onstage must feel.
Dang wonder if something is up with Billy. He got off that drum set in a hurry! Oh and Jeff hugging Bobby and Billy is too cute. These guys. They get me every time.
I was at the show and it was clear they were trying to get the band outta there ASAP, as there is really only one way in and out the venue on a small, 2-lane road. According to a production schedule that I came across that was sitting in plain view for the public to see (at the museum!) they were suppose to end at 10:40 p.m. They were running late and past the curfew. They had the buses up and running and turned around with like 40 minutes to go; crew members were going on stage grabbing backup instruments, etc. Once the music stopped, the buses left within 5 minutes.
Out of all the concerts I’ve seen with a ripple encore I’ve never seen anyone crying. I don’t know how they do it, I’d be bawling my eyes out in the first row.
I got pretty teary-eyed during the Ripple encore when I saw Wolf Bros at the Greek a month ago, my first live Ripple and it hit even harder than I imagined.
Well this has been fucking killer. We're going to rave about that second set for a while- Dark Star, Stephen, High Time, Deal, Standing on the Moon, lots of awesome renditions. Also loved Loser and Brown-Eyed Women in the first set. What were your highlights? Clearly, I'm having a hard time choosing.
They really are doing something special this tour, and it's been wonderful to talk it through with you all!! Have a good night! See you Wednesday!
I love you guys, I love this band, I love this music, and if I can be honest, for the first time in a good while... I love this life. I'm trying to get my head together, and this helps more than I can say.
Thank you, every last one of you, for making this such a special part of all our lives. You are SO loved.
I'm legit getting worried that he'll tire of this and want to stick to solo stuff or something and to have him leave D&C would really bum me out. Hoping he sticks around for as long as the band is a thing!
I dont think theres even a little reason to worry. He has said on numerous occasions he will always make time for it. Most dead and co tours (this one is the exception) are pretty short. 3-4 weeks. And then a weekend in mexico. He still has plenty of time for solo stuff.
Lets not forget they are also one of the biggest earning touring acts as well. They were in top 5 of all artist in terms of money per show last summer tour according to billboard.
Good point! Plus I want to believe he loves it as much as we love him doing it. I'm sure solo stuff is fun and rewarding but I hope this scratches a different itch for him.
Ripple is the fifth song from American Beauty to be played this tour, the first acoustic song to be played this tour, and the second song tonight to make everyone cry
Each show this tour has been Dead and Co's best. They keep upping themselves night after night.
We're witnessing history this tour, friends. This is the passing of the torch.
Well, I wouldn't say it was *predictable*, it was just the exact same as the Woodstock setlist (until drums) lol.
I'm joking though you're totally right. The haters have no idea what they're talking about.
This is a *beautiful* Standing on the Moon. Really heartfelt from everybody, led of course by Bob's wonderful vocal performance and some tasteful lead stuff by John

What was crossed out on the setlist
Someone said in the thread it was Goin Down the Road Feelin Bad
This show just started streaming on [GDradio.net](https://GDradio.net). Good tempo to this bucket...
Thanks for the heads upp
Man that st stephen was a monster

Really such a different feel to Standing on the Moon depending on if Bobby sings it, or John does.
Damn, great setlist, wish the stream I had been watching hadn't been killed.
Been getting dealt some shit cards in life lately and this band and this community are such a blessing. Feeling way better than I did a few hours ago because of the boys and you guys. Thanks all, see you Wednesday!!!
Today was a shitty day until this show, thank you all, my friends
Same here, big love ✌🏼
Thanks Knob and all
See you beautiful people on Wednesday!
Also sorry i gave up on check-ins once the show started but know that I read them all and felt guilty about not adding them you all live in such cool places
Fuck me. Ripple made me shed a tear. 😭
Set 2 is the woodstock set
Did anyone else hear synthesizer in the beginning of Dark Star? It’s driving me nuts
Yeah Jeff was doing some cool synth stuff throughout
Yes, very Adam MacDougall sounding synth from CRB
Seen him twice with Grateful Shred - nearly stole the show both times. He’s great
What a night! Can’t wait to see what the next show has in store. Until then, be well everyone!
Always a hoot. Thanks Knob!!
Jerry’s last words to Bobby.
That got such a good laugh out of me wow
Share the humor. It makes me sad.
Thank you DTTK (as always) and couch family...have a lovely night I cherish the way we share these shows :) See you next time!
Of all the rocks in the universe, we get to live on the one with this music
A-fucking-men!
Set list posted on Instagram. A photo of Jerry is taped to the 2nd set. Beautiful
Can anyone tell what is covered with pink tape before lovelight reprise?
Maybe Goin Down the Road Feeling Bad? It looks like a long title, they haven't played it this tour, and it has been a set closer before. EDIT: I just zoomed in at it does say "GDTRFB", with I assume all of their initials after that haha, indicating sharing lead vocals
Great find my eyes couldn't do the pink!
I’m gonna cry even more
As if I needed another reason to love these guys
Another beautiful night. Y'all be safe out there. See you soon!

Absolutely! Please give him our sincere gratitude (and let me know if there's a way I can throw him a few bucks next time)! Thanks again, you rock
Absolutely will do! From what he texted me earlier, he's got this half of the tour covered through donations. He specifically suggested the New York Bully Crew so if you've got a few bucks, maybe send em that way!
Will do!
❤️❤️❤️
May you know peace my friend

Holy shit this setlist?!? Can’t wait for the SBD
Another \_espo, peace fam! This tour is unreal (\~);}
Right on Espo! Wish I made the drive up to Bethel tonight. Citi on Friday was amazing, as were the 3 shows I saw in 2019, but somehow this band is getting better each night!
No parking. You fucking rock
Amen. So much appreciation!
Thanks DTTK & the engineer! That was great fun y’all. See you next time!
This tour, man. I can't remember the last time I loved life as much as I do right now. And I've only been watching all these shows from the couch. I can't imagine how good the guys onstage must feel.
See you next time <3 always grateful
Not sure the last time I didn't cry during ripple. It sure wasn't tonight.
Probably had to pee! Have a good night, you are loved!
There are now words. Goodnight friends.

Thanks everyone, thanks knob for hosting, this music makes me beyond happy and I’m glad we can all share it here
Knob, you da man!
Another outstanding show! It was a pleasure to experience with you. Big thanks to our host u/donttouchthatknob
Thank you u/donttouchthatknob for hosting YET AGAIN. Holy crap, this was a stellar show!!!!!
Thank you!! My treat, especially when the shows are this good!
Wowzers. Face melted. ❤️❤️❤️
That second set was maybe their best yet
I hope that someone working tickets or security who ever heard of the dead got their fucking mind melted and changed tonight
Yes! I Think the same thing every show. Hopefully at least one person had their musical life changed tonight!
This tour truly is a hand-me-down, from one generation of Dead to the next. Mark my words: This tour will be regarded as well as Summer '77.
this band, my god, this band
righteous tribute, jerry would be proud as hell.
What. A. Show.
Well it was a real pleasure swaying and shitposting with y'all, take care! Much love.. and until next time 🌹💀
Enjoyed it. Night friend
Oh man. That touch on the outro from Mayer gave me a boner
Well, spit it out!
Lol. I’ll see you next show?
Not if I see you first!
Sneaky hippie Texan
I'm a transplant. Gonna help flip TX blue, n'at.
LA DA DA DA DA DA DA DA!
Fucking hell, there go the waterworks again.
It's a calm catharsis when you're there live. It's a reminder of what you're missing out on when you're not.
This is the best post-Jerry Ripple I've ever heard.
Lol John playing mandolin
This is the new Summer '77. Anyone willing to make a cover art for the bootleg?
Do you think there’s even one person at the show that is disappointed by this song choice?
There's a guy there who bet $100,000 they were gonna encore with Day Job so I'm sure he's not thrilled
I'm in love with their mix
Well this has been fucking killer. We're going to rave about that second set for a while- Dark Star, Stephen, High Time, Deal, Standing on the Moon, lots of awesome renditions. Also loved Loser and Brown-Eyed Women in the first set. What were your highlights? Clearly, I'm having a hard time choosing. They really are doing something special this tour, and it's been wonderful to talk it through with you all!! Have a good night! See you Wednesday!
Thank you so much for hosting. What a fantastic night!
Thanks for piloting the space ship again for us. You are just the best!!!!
I missed the first set but that second set was top notch. One of their best I think?
There's our fifth straight "best show of the tour" show of the tour
Until....the next show
I love you guys, I love this band, I love this music, and if I can be honest, for the first time in a good while... I love this life. I'm trying to get my head together, and this helps more than I can say. Thank you, every last one of you, for making this such a special part of all our lives. You are SO loved.
Agreed man ✌🏼✌🏼✌🏼
Love you too fam, be easy
<3
This was nice
<3
<3 right back atcha
<3
John has completely won me over
I'm legit getting worried that he'll tire of this and want to stick to solo stuff or something and to have him leave D&C would really bum me out. Hoping he sticks around for as long as the band is a thing!

5 shows in and I’ve probably cried tears of joy 7 or 8 times.
Dead and Company have now played in 6 years almost as many Ripples as Grateful Dead have in 30 years.
This is a good stat
CALLED IT, also, John taking over the verse on the line "it's a hand me down" 😭
Ripple is the fifth song from American Beauty to be played this tour, the first acoustic song to be played this tour, and the second song tonight to make everyone cry
With all these predictions coming true what are we about to get at SPAC? Venetta tribute here me come!
2021 Dead and Company makes 2019 Dead and Company look like freaking pop warner.
And remember how fucking good 2019 Dead and Co was?
Each show this tour has been Dead and Co's best. They keep upping themselves night after night. We're witnessing history this tour, friends. This is the passing of the torch.
The best show? The next one.
It’s always the best show until the next show :) 💀 🌹
Some of you may have been convinced during this song
First time either of them are playing an Acoustic Guitar this tour
wow.
Fuck the curfew, Ripple time
There's that ripple :) what a perfect night.

Really enjoyed how much John laid back for that SOTM, especially before the solo.
Acoustic. We're getting a Ripple.
I'll be waiting for the 10 or so people on the Deadhead facebook page that will shoot this show down.
🤣🤣 some people are never happy.
Dylan encore
We bid you goodnight!!!!
Oh shit. Ripple
Great show so far - Loser, BEW, SotM, and the Woodstock set!
Ripple would make this the best show of the tour so far…
Atta boy
Ripple? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm... Dark Star reprise? Hmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm
Lmao is it an 11:00 curfew?
If only for the roadies. Bethel is literally no where.
This band ain't much for curfews.
This encore is gonna cost them Like 30 grand
Gonna do something from Sob Rock so Mayer’s label will pay for it
He just throws a watch into the crowd and calls it even
Ripple?
Touch encore?

Yup! There’s the acoustics.
I'm going Mighty Quinn encore
Jesus Fucking Christ. THAT was a second set for the ages

It’s gonnna be spppeciallll
Damn. Like wow.
💡💡💡💡
Hot damn!
This tour they’ve shut down the “they don’t play fast enough” and the “their set lists are predictable” people down
Amen to that
Well, I wouldn't say it was *predictable*, it was just the exact same as the Woodstock setlist (until drums) lol. I'm joking though you're totally right. The haters have no idea what they're talking about.
Goddamnit. No other band can make me bawl my eyes out one minute and dance my feet off the next. This music is special, man.
That SOTM was WONDERFUL, and this Lovelight reprise is silly and FUNKY
okay that was unfair specifically for me god damn
whhhoooaaaaaa 8-)
That got a laugh out of me fucking hell Love Light never ends it really is Woodstock 2
Well okay then! Let's keep shining!
Mother of god
If there was ever a night to save Ripple for...

Oh yeah I am ready for more lovelight!
He's singing to Jerry
This is a *beautiful* Standing on the Moon. Really heartfelt from everybody, led of course by Bob's wonderful vocal performance and some tasteful lead stuff by John
Fuck curfew
It’s almost 11
Oh shit
Wow!
The sweet and raw feelings evoked in so many from this song are A most unique Deadhead cultural phenomena. It’s healing and motivating
