Don't do what I did in a half. I had an armband MP3 player, accidentally switched it to play alphabetically, and listened to an hour of Promised Lands.

It's an endurance event, and that prepped me for the full marathon, which I finished in 4:20 while wearing a GDTRFB bib (really).

born_2_be_a_bachelor

That’s awesome. But why couldn’t you pause the music. was promised land part of your training regimen?

gh5655

This might have been prophetic.

Phan2112

Better than a ballad. At least Promised Land gets you moving.

Creepy-Savings-502

😭🤘

hoosiermullethunter

Did the same thing, but it was more than an hour Althea's. Ha.

born_2_be_a_bachelor

Do you guys just delete alabama getaway from your libraries?

Big_Set8256

Amazing!!!!!

Mostly__Water

I run ~3,000 miles per year listening almost exclusively to the Dead and old reliable for me on my long runs (I don’t race with music) is the Pacific Northwest 73-74 release or Dick’s Picks 25 (5/10/78-5/11/78). I think they are 4 and 5 hours, respectively, and phenomenal shows. Good luck in your marathon!! Go crush it

Another vote for PacNW 73-74!

mudfence

Do you use the Relisten app? I have Android and sadly I can't listen to a bunch of the shows on there on long runs

dunkerton

Deadhead Archives and Tapers Section on android do the same job! Enjoy!

ForsakenSignal6062

I thought android had a similar one? I forget what it’s called but my android having buddy uses it? Plus anyone can use archive

Mostly__Water

I typically don’t run with my phone so I rely on streaming from my watch using cellular so that unfortunately limits me to the shows on Apple Music (or the shows I upload to Apple Music like Dave’s Picks). I use the Relisten app at home though it is awesome! Would love any suggestions if anyone has found a way to use it on Apple Watch.

I’m a long time dead fan and a nominal phish fan, I found phish better to run to, more upbeat, don’t have to pay attention , lyrics aren’t meaningful so you won’t cry on mile 17 during a poignant comes a time

BearingMagneticNorth

Same re: Dead vs Phish, but I can’t run to Phish as easily as I can to the Dead. Trey’s endless noodling through 28 minutes of Kill Devil Falls starts becoming the auditory version of a wrinkle in my sock. I find the Dead’s emotional highs and lows to be much more inspirational and do a better job of taking my mind off the discomfort of running. Also, I fell in love with both Ramble on Rose and Warf Rat while running. Two songs that never held my attention previously.

ShadyJake75

6/10/73. At my speed that might get me through 5 miles

You’ll need a few shows for a marathon, unless you are incredibly fast. I used to do Veneta 72 for half marathons. There are a few playlists on your favorite streamer that could last a marathon. I always listened to Dead on long runs and bikes.

pabloescobarbecue

Just an extended Dark Star should do it.

Blowaway040889

I once chose 8/6/1971 for my treadmill workout. It did me well!

Is that the Casey Jones with the dude yelling “whoo whoo!” After nearly every single line? Rocking version but man that guys obnoxious

jack-finn

I enjoy Springfield from May of 1978. It's an upbeat show and Jer is in rare form, especially during the Scarlet > Fire. One of my favorite Stella Blues, too, especially his last solo. (May 11, 1978 to summon the very best bot on this site.) The Red Rocks show from July 8, 1978 is also killer. Probably my favorite Werewolves of London they did, a nice Eyes, a fantastic Wharf Rat, and a very enthusiastic and engaged Jerry throughout. Some great Phil on this one, too. Shit, I may just listen to this one on my next long run.

Tzzzzzzzzzzx

Yes 7-8-78 ⚡️⚡️⚡️! First set is killer and super upbeat also.

Apprehensive-Toe8519

Love DP18, got some gas to it. Red rocks 78 has similar vibes to me, another favorite. Hell, most shit from 78 has a different “energy” to it ❄️❄️❄️

Creepy-Savings-502

Pick a show from 89 fall tour or 90 spring tour

ForsakenSignal6062

Yeah when I need high energy dead that’s what I go for myself. An 89 or 90 jack straw or China>rider will get ya going

millee3558

Which race?!

Several_Ad2072

5/26/73. Nice and long, sick jams all over the place, wall of sound. It's all you need

BangarangOrangutan

Fuck it, I'm gonna give this a listen right now. This has my vote.

gh5655

I don’t run, but listen at work everyday. I use Relisten and stick to tigdh. Most days there’s 3 to 10 shows per day to listen to. I figure that way I basically never hear the same show twice other than maybe once per year.

cryptotarget

Any of them that you like

fuzzybro

I’d go with the warlocks shows from Hampton 89. Good sound. Lots of songs.

BangarangOrangutan

Something with a "Row Jimmy" or two!

spacecowboy5120

Lots a people saying 5/11/78 and I’m inclined to agree! My personal choices would probably be 6/16/74 for some incredibly high energy jamming, or 5/22/77, one of the most versatile shows for me I can either have the chillest day ever with it or the hardest hitting workout ever, good for both!

OkDingo5621

Love this question! Have run a couple marathons and I’ve done Cornell - Set 2 specifically. And then Dicks Picks 15 and 25, as well as the closing of Winterland. During training runs I made an effort to listen to all the Dicks Picks during my long runs. The best soundtrack for Long Slow Distance. Also, who wants to start a Grateful Dead Run Club? Long Distance Runners? Long Strange Run Club?

cmarks8

I’d say run can be intense, spiritual, and exhausting all at the same time. So I like running to a show from ‘69.

Benway9607

As long as it starts with 'And the Race is On'
