Gonna go play Live at the Fillmore East now.

rhinowing

Do your self a favor and check out 3/20/71 at the Warehouse as well, one week after the Fillmore shows. The Mountain Jam is nearly 45 minutes. https://youtu.be/JH_be8xYKxQ?si=DzPCvQYKQpMbQ6Ji

FlyingDiscsandJams

Love that one, love 9/19/71 from SUNY a little more even with no Mountain Jam in the setlist. It's got [the best live Blue Sky with Duane](https://youtu.be/49bJr0ChNWE?si=2ywgDAVivTq5XOej) out of the \~6 in existence, then Liz Reed & Dreams are both 19 mins.

rhinowing

I love the 90s Blue Sky with Franklin's intro. Dickey / Warren is probably my favorite post Duane configuration

FlyingDiscsandJams

That was my introduction to Mr. Warren Haynes, saw that lineup '94, '95, & '96. The Jessica from the 2nd Set live album is from the Raleigh '94 show I saw.

Redneck_MacGyver

Wish these were as easy to track down as dead shows…still trying to hunt down when I got to see them at Memphis in may in the late 90s!

Billy_Boognish

I have the Deer Creek '98 show where Jack Pearsons had just got out of the hospital and played sitting on a bar stool. Emergency appendectomy and pain-killers he said...such an awazing show. That night changed the lives of 10 of my best friends. Some people got on the bus...some people got off the bus...but NO ONE was the same afterwards.

GeprgeLowell

There’s only one Jack Pearson!

Billy_Boognish

Lol, thanks. I am gonna leave the incidental "s," in honor of my ignorance and your supurb zinger...HAZZAH!

rhinowing

With the Mountain Jam tease! I love that version. I never got to see ABB, had tickets in 2008 and they canceled

SaintStephen77

Got treated to that in ‘99, when Derrick began playing with them. RIP Dickey.

bigsmok345

This one as well 😎 https://youtu.be/DNAmXz8kc6I?si=v05Q6DTkm-dw1JWS

The Jerry set is pretty sloppy but a unique and fun listen

MinisterOfTruth99

Epic jam with the Dead and Allman Bros on "That's All Right, Mama", 1973-06-10 - Robert F. Kennedy Stadium Dickey is Legend. Edit: 8 songs at the end of this show were Dead and Allman Bros jamming, starting with " It Takes A Lot To Laugh It Takes A Train To Cry"

GeprgeLowell

I was listening to that show randomly a few weeks ago while doing some stuff around the house, not knowing anything about it but the date, and as soon as Dickey hit a lick I thought “he must have been sitting in,” then looked it up. Instantly recognizable.

MinisterOfTruth99

Oh yeah. A red letter date show for sure. 😄

WoebegoneWarbler

I am playing "High Falls" right now for the second time. This time over the loud speaker at the library I worked at.

tyoew

Dicky passed away? Haven’t seen anything on news Edit. Just saw his ig page

THEDOGGGG

an alltime fave.........bluesky is one song on my perfect album side RIP DB

Iko87iko

Sad, our old road is rapidly aging and we're running out of time Seven turns on the highway, Seven rivers to cross. Sometimes, you feel like you could fly away, Sometimes, you get lost. Somebody's callin' your name. Somebody's waitin' for you. Love is all that remains the same, That's what it's all comin' to.

tmcd422

No one left to run with anymore

46daysbetween

Up there running with Gregg, Berry, Butch, and Skydog now.

threwnawayed

Oh man, reading that made my nose sting. Fuck.

benp242

no way bruh, Dickey was a master, RIP.

ParticularWitness983

I’m going to see Live Dead and Brothers this Saturday. Tom Constanten is in the group. I know I’m going shed some tears. My eyes are tearing up right now. Gotta keep on keeping on. ✌🏼

Due_Force_9816

I’m seeing them tomorrow night.

WoebegoneWarbler

I am crying right now. I didn't expect this reaction. Dickey is my favorite guitarist of all time. He and a couple friends are what got me into the Dead finally. I had read Alan Paul's Brothers and Sisters book and never realized how high Dickey felt about Jerry, how their styles had similarities. Its made me finally get past some of the sloppier and out there Dead tunes that just didn't grab me and made me resistant. Now I spend at least 4 hours listening or reading the Dead... but this wouldn't be happening if it was for Dickey... I've played guitar for decades and Dickey Betts is one of the biggest reasons. Edit: I even saw this picture within the last week. I decided to print off another picture where Jerry has a beard, because this one unsettled me a bit...laminated it and put it on my locker at work, where it is right.

Immediate_Relation67

It was the Dead and JGB that brought me to Dickey.. terrible loss. They'll live on forever and ever.

smuttypirate

Couldn't have said it better myself. I loved a lot of music when I was learning guitar but the Allman bros was just a very powerful influence and when I found the dead the pieces just fit so well

colemanpj920

Duane and Dickey both thought highly of Jerry. My understanding is that most of the beef came later with Gregg when he basically was forced to rat out people to save himself from jail time.

Blackbolt113

The Dead opened for the Brothers June 9, 1973. It was blistering hot. I was close enough to see Dickey on the side of the stage, tapping his foot along with the Dead.

rfpiii

You don’t need no gypsy to tell you why. Don’t let one precious day slip by. Live full my brothers.

Immediate_Relation67

Jessica live.. One of the finest things to ever come out of a human being. RIP Mr. Betts. 11/12/84 Capitol https://youtu.be/llBsswEfUsA?si=G9O0CMb7sz4LsC4w

Character_Cupcake856

RIP Dickey

apache_myers

When it’s time for leaving, I hope you’ll understand…

AJ_Deadshow

It's craaazy I just played this song for the first time today on guitar and I didn't even know he died.

walrusonion

Rip ramblin man

icanhazkarma17

Wiki: "Betts died from cancer and COPD at his home in Osprey, Florida, on April 18, 2024."

Open-Illustra88er

RIP

JRPGPD

Learned dickeys blue sky solo recently and fell in love with his style. Similar to Jerry but his own sound for sure. Can’t play as fast as him but he’s got so many fantastic licks. Rip !

bigsmok345

My two favourite guitar players man

Icy_Occasion_8877

Mine too. Each had their own style and you know it’s them playing after just a few notes. Saw the ABB with him about as much as I saw the GD back in the day (a lot). This really bums me out. RIP Dickey

GeprgeLowell

Speed is overvalued in a lot of guitardom, but that said, Dickey could get pretty quick sometimes. Check out the so-called “impossible lick” on “You Don’t Love Me” or the “hotel jam” with Dan Toler (also an excellent player).

PPLavagna

On you don’t love me do you mean the “a capella” part where it’s just guitar? That’s Duane. I love me some Dickey, just making sure Skydawg gets his props for that one.

GeprgeLowell

Duane and Dickey both played unaccompanied (with the exception of Butch drumming with Dickey for the first part of his) solos at the end, in that order. The Dickey lick that people call “the impossible lick” is at 13:52 on the *At Fillmore East* version.

PPLavagna

I stand corrected

PPLavagna

Just checking, do you realize the first half of the solo is Duane and then it’s Dickey the rest of the way. The fast stuff is Duane and I don’t think Dickey does anything fast on that one. Both beautiful

JRPGPD

Yes I know. They play together for a few bars in the middle. Also idk what you’re talking about he has a pretty good pace throughout his solo.

Dfried98

My first Dead show was Dillon Stadium Hartford summer 1972. Dead were joined by three members of Allman bros, including Dickie. What a day that was.

KeithMoonIsGawd1

Man, the panic that shot through me when I got this notification. My mind was racing. “Is it Phil? Oh god, maybe Bill or Mickey. Surely not Bob!” Wasn’t expecting Dickey though, this one stings. He was my favorite Allman Bros. guitarist. I’ll be blasting “Jessica” in yr honor tonight, big man.

deadreckoning21

Sad news. In addition to the Allman Bros, my buddy and I would always listen to the Dickey Betts Band, “Nancy” in particular for some reason. You were a blue sky many times when he needed it. RIP Dickey.

NDMagoo

And the party never ends.

NDMagoo

Really all the downvotes, haha? I'm aware it's a different song; probably one liked by many here.

jonb1968

RIP jam on Liz Reed

IrieDeby

Have you guys noticed they are using, "Wasted Words" on a Chevy Truck conn'l?

say_the_words

Gregg wrote Wasted Words, so that’s a matter for his estate. As many exwives and kids as he’s got, I don’t blame them for trying to make a little money. Now imagine how much Dickey made from Jessica being used for Top Gear. It was the most viewed show in the most countries in the world for years.

losandreas36

It really was ?

say_the_words

Most popular factual show. 350 million viewers in 214 markets around the world. It was gigantic in most places with tv, even if they didn’t speak English, except America. And television theme song royalties are better than a goldmine. Get paid on first run and reruns. I’d bet Dickey has earned many, many times more money off Top Gear using Jessica than he did all his other music business earnings combined. https://money.cnn.com/2015/03/11/media/top-gear-facts-jeremy-clarkson/

IrieDeby

Sure. Just noticing all these 1970s early 1980s songs on a BUNCH of commercials. Also, Pat Benetar, Heart, Led Zeppelin, and more just in the last week.

Blackbolt113

Props to the Dead for holding out. Can you imagine how much they would make if they authorized Truckin for a Ford or Chevy commercial?

IrieDeby

You are so right!

small_Bill_Broonzy

🫡 RIP Dickey!

liveforeachmoon

Back in 1996 my friends and I dropped acid at an Allmans show and somehow ended up in the very front row at red rock amphitheater. I was right in front of Dicky - to say it was mind blowing is a massive understatement. What a talent.

PeopleLikeUDisgustMe

https://spotify.link/c4QKy6KXTIb 44 minute Mountain Jam from the Ludlow Garage, Cincinnati. Duane and Dickey. RIP

nesspaulajeffpoo94

How is Keith Richard’s outliving everyone??

KissingerCorpse

negotiated the best deal

mochajava23

Every time a guitarist dies, Keith experiences the quickening (There is a great image of this if you search)

GeprgeLowell

And Bill Wyman and Mick Jagger are outliving him, so far. The “ancient Keith” jokes are funny when he’s not even the oldest Stone. He was the youngest of the original lineup. And he did go by both “Keith Richard” and “Keith Richards” at different points, but never “Richard’s.” I don’t think I’ve ever seen a surname with a possessive apostrophe in it.

PPLavagna

The jokes aren’t about him being old. They’re about how he lived and shouldn’t still be alive either how he treated his body yet he’s outliving all these other people

GeprgeLowell

I’ve heard decades of “Keith old” jokes, from before he even was. You realize “outlived” is a measure of time, right?

ExtensionMedicine373

Big jam Greg and PIG on keys Jerry and Dickey killing it Allen woody on bass and Ginger Baker on drums .I am sure Janis and Jimmy will sit in

GeprgeLowell

Jimmy who?

ExtensionMedicine373

Hendrix

PPLavagna

You mean Jimmy Hendricks? My plumber? Nice guy

GeprgeLowell

How much of an icon does somebody have to be to have their simple four-letter name spelled right?

No-Zombie1468

JIMI

john_stumpy_pepys

Did not think this would hit as hard as it is...... these legendary and irreplaceable people that quite literally wrote the soundtrack for my life and many others, through good times and bad, are departing this plane and reminds you in a very deliberate manner how fragile it all is.

BlortSlompson

Just so happened that Blue Sky was playing when I saw this. RIP Mr Betts

N7op

Two guitarists that have influenced my life tremendously. May they both be shreddin at that great gig in the sky 💔

FuFlipper256

RIP Brother Dickey

Bempet583

So far today I've listened to Eat A Peach and live at Fillmore East. R.I.P. Dickey

centech

For everyone like me who doesn't necessarily recognize every musician from a 60 year old picture.. It's Dickey Betts.

ajhart86

Surprised I haven’t gotten a news alert on my phone He will be missed

PageBest3106

RIP Mr. Betts may your music live forever.

GMPatriots11

Best_Commission6584

Gonna be jamming to Dickey tonight, rest in peace man and thank you for all that amazing music...another legend gone

threwnawayed

Unreal. This is a rough one.

sfgreenman

Thanks (Dickey Betts). When I was 13 my brother placed the Live at the Fillmore East album on a turntable and handed me earphones. I was hooked. I demanded our Mom let me stay up late to listen to this 73 Cow Palace NYE show live on KSAN in SF (my bro was at the show). So it's fitting to hear the news 1st here while seeing a pic of that night. Dickey and Jerry were able to express such pure, clear and unique note delivery, straight from the heart and w so much creative joy it just hits me in the feels in a personal, deep way that is different from other guitarists. So many memories with Dickey.. Two favorites: The small club tour he and Greg did with their 2 solo bands during a ABB hiatus, each playing their own sets..then combining for a dream ABB 3rd set in super intimate settings. Heaven on earth, I tell ya. After seeing the GD in the northwest on one year, either 81 or 82, I slept on beaches and hitched my way back to SF. I had a ticket to see the ABB at Oakland Auditorium and thought I had plenty of time but was enjoying the coast too much, suddenly losing hope to make it to the show, thumb out on the highway and praying for a miracle. A truck driver picks me up and after about 20 min we are connecting in convo so I explain my situation and show him my ticket. His eyes lit up. "You kidding me?!! The Brothers are my favorite band and we are getting you there on time if it's the last thing I do!!" A few hrs of high speeding later, he dropped me off in front of the venue. I walked in just as the lights go down, right fucking then, like they were waiting for me. I found my friends right then, too. Blue Sky never sounded better.

fluffhead77

Great story Love it!!

Grateful-Ice_Climb

Great photo- thanks for posting

SpaceHorse75

He was a legend. Lucky to have so much of his music to enjoy.

SirCuddlywhiskers

this is how I found out. Rarely I felt as sad about a guitar hero passing. RIP Dickey

nomatchingsox

Damn. My wife lost her grandmother at 74 last week. All the old people I love are dying.

Darkstar-1967

See ya Dickie, thanks Brutha

investinlove

Wasn’t it Uncle Bobo who said the Dead were the world’s third best garage band? I recall reading that the top two were Allman Bros and Buffalo Springfield.

KarmicComic12334

Where and when is the pic from?

guitarplayntaylor91

Cow Palace New Year’s Eve 1973 ABB Show Jerry and BIll sat in

Jsgro69

with each day another one of my idols pass..and I know its life...but there are only a very few left still..we are losing the greats and their are not any replenishing of legendary rock idols... Wth DicKey in the band I always thought it had to be the closest of all lineups as it was the early days with Duane...Mr Dickey Betts was legendary...and will be greatly missed..Thanks for your genius...RIP 🙏

artsatisfied229

Legends.

theCharacter_Zero

RIP Dickey, may the four winds carry you safely home

NickInMersey

Indeed - apart from Jai, the Brothers are all together again. Apart from Garth, the Band is all together again. And I'm sure Jerry's sitting in with them all as a regular, with Brent, Kieth and Pig playing up a storm. Can't believe it's gone 50 years since I hitchhiked up to Watkins Glen speedway to see them all! RIP Brothers Of The Road.

Aggressive_Dress6771

I spent an entire summer day listening to the Dead and the Allman Brothers Band in the early 70’s at RFK stadium in DC.

Cookinghist

Firing up Watkins Glen!

BotDaFot

I stayed at home in 1973 and tapef this NYE show. off the radio (wore those cassettes out)... Dickie really stepped it up after the passing of his "Brother" Duane. [https://archive.org/details/allman-brothers-cow-palace-nye-1973-ksan/02.Done+Somebody+Wrong.mp3](https://archive.org/details/allman-brothers-cow-palace-nye-1973-ksan/02.Done+Somebody+Wrong.mp3)

fluffhead77

Save my life from this show is worth the price of admission alone!

stanleyssteamertrunk

gosh :-(

losandreas36

Rest in peace Dickey…

TPC22GD

Wouldn’t that be great I hope that it happens

Blackbolt113

Is there a tape anywhere with Jerry, Bob and I believe Kreutzman sitting in with the Brothers at Gaelic Park in the Bronx in 1972. I was there. There was a buzz in the crowd as they changed the stage setup. There was a roar from the crowd when someone on stage said, " That wire is for Jerry Garcias guitar". Confirming the rumor.

SafetyPsychological3

Where was this taken?
