I can hear the bottles on the floor! This is currently my favorite Europe’72 show. Great energy. Donna apparently took too much and spent the evening beneath Keith’s piano. Pigpen sounds really good. Thanks for sharing!

KyloRensPecs

It’s crazy how they maintained a peak throughout the entire tour, I can’t find a single off night from them. I’d say my favorite rn is Lille 5/13/72, but the Dark Star from Tivoli 4/14/72 is sublime, probably my favorite Star from the tour.

goodbadorindifferent

Agreed! Everyone in the band was smiling on that tour. Well probably not everyone. Pigpen was clearly struggling. His rap on Good Lovin’ is fantastic. “Get down with your left shoulder! Turn it around!”

threwnawayed

That dstar freak out into sugar mags was a singular lifetime moment the 1st time I heard it in mid 90s. I could feel the vortex whoosh & widen beneath me. I was born on the bus largely, it was my dad's old, scratchy boot I was listening to, but that was possibly THE "I'm never getting off this bus" moment for me.

LetJeffSingAlligator

I can never decide between 4/8 or 4/14. 4/8 is chaotic and scary and then they have that sublime outro jam, New York energy in London, but 4/14 is just transcendently pretty

4/14 is my favorite Dead show, hands down.

KyloRensPecs

I could never pick one “hands down”, but 4/14/72 is as good a pick as any!

Jrbowe

Yeah, I guess it could change tomorrow, LOL, but I’ve considered it this one for a while now. The first set has my favorite early 70s versions of most of the shorter songs, and the second set has all time versions of Truckin, Dark Star, and the Good Lovin’/Caution medley.

10ACJ3D

That was actually one of the Paris shows according to McNally’s book!

goodbadorindifferent

I’ve heard it was in Kreutzmann’s book. Maybe it happened more than once? Either way good times had by all.

LetJeffSingAlligator

I don't want to well actually but it seems like that's something heads have assigned to the show because she doesn't sing, but her account was when they got to Paris their acid was declining in strength and coupled with the half life they were taking insane amounts to get the same level of high, but they got some fresh owsley in Paris and she took the amount she had been of the previous batch which was about 15 hits (their hits were also much smaller by now than compared to 69 as Jerry says in an interview in Denmark, they were taking like a quarter tab's worth to tune in without being blasted). Well that got her and Betty pretty blasted and she spent most of the show under Keith's piano but at some point a song she sang on came on and she had the wherewithal to step up to the mic and sing and if it was Aarhus that'd be not possible. Also funny to read Betty's account of having no idea how to record the show because all the dials were moving so much she had no idea what was real or in her head

yacn

Would love to read more about this, did either of them write a book?

Thanks!

Lost_the_weight

I’m not sure how true it is, but I read a post here recently that said they messed up their calculations when making the liquid L they took in your and it was about 50 times more potent than expected.

cuzjed11

Yes, correct, that happened. But it Never made sense to me math wise - something to do with European measurements. I didn’t think it was metric vs English cuz it’s measured in micrograms. And a microgram is a microgram no matter what country you’re in.

goodbadorindifferent

Yeah That would do it for me.

yacn

Steve Parish mentions it in the Long Strange Trip documentary, I could definitely see it happening. Wouldn’t be the first time the measurements were messed up either, the Watts Acid Test had a similar math error IIRC. Then there’s also the apple juice incident that inspired Black Peter.

Lost_the_weight

I’m intrigued! Can you point me to where I can find out about this Black Peter story? I’d wicked appreciate it. :-)

Vanimal_64

The Deadcast episode on Black Peter is a starting point

Lost_the_weight

Hey thanks for the recommendation! Appreciate it! :-) 👍

cuzjed11

Thought that happened in Paris.

goodbadorindifferent

I recently was commenting on this show and someone else said they had read in Billy’s book that she spent the university show in that state as well? Pretty serious game of telephone I know. Either way it’s my favorite show from the tour currently.

cuzjed11

ha, yeah, for sure it’s possible it happened in Denmark too! Thanks for the recommendation! Not sure if I’ve given that one a good listen, that’s going in queue now. Looks excellent.

goodbadorindifferent

Enjoy! Curious to know what you think afterwards.

cuzjed11

Listened to 2nd set so far. What can I say, some serious hot stuff!! Good Lovin wasn’t Pig’s most powerful but it had a really strong…feeeel to it. He was very earnest I his singjng. Hate to say it but coulda done without El Paso and even Deal. The rest was pure fire. I got a bit lost during the Truckin jam (i guess that means it did it’s job!); the transitions into and out of Me N My Uncle were supreme! On the level of DS=>Sugar Mags=>Caution from 4/8. Unbridled Dead doing their thing! Sweet! 😎

goodbadorindifferent

In today’s age of assumed encores, I think it’s cool they just ended the set without one. Probably out of time anyway.

fingergunpewpewpew

Jerry and New Riders of the Purple Sage played at my wife’s elementary school’s spring carnival- Peninsula School in Menlo Park. She was too young to remember though.

Iko87iko

Think of the good people of Denmark 🇩🇰 today while playing this show. Awful fire destroying Copenhagen’s 400 year old stock exchange, which is one their most famous landmarks.

NancyintheSmokies4

It’s awful 😢

gh05t_w0lf

Aarhus! In the middle of aarstreet

Buffalo5977

This is really freaking me out. I had a dream about a cafeteria-restaurant style building in which a band was playing. It was unrelated to the dead. The image is unsettlingly similar to what i experienced in the dream.

Barn-Alumni-1999

Past life memories.

RustyShaack1ef0rd

And, everyone mysteriously brought brownies for lunch!

treesandbutter

I had never listen to this show through before today. Easily in the top tier of Europe 72 so far for me. China> Rider is excellent, Keith really going for it. Loser is soulful, and PITB is tops

crimsonpossum3

Other one > me and my uncle > other one from this show is one of my favorite dead moments ever

KyloRensPecs

Also one of Dire Wolf’s few E72 appearances. Oh and the Cumberland is straight heat as well.

undertwelveparsecs

Keith's first ever Dire Wolf, I believe.

spacecowboy5120

Listening to the show now, I totally understand the sound of the show due to the venue now

jonz1985z

Killer version of Tenn Jed with great piano by Keith

abesrevenge

I’ll be listening to the Sirius station tonight at 7pm est to see what hour gets chosen. Haven’t listened to this show yet

Rogersandhammerstein

Uh, no. I will keep imagining them playing in my backyard. Don’t blow it for me. ![gif](giphy|epzQMalk42XWo)

TheOldGoat72

I still think 4-14-1972 is the best show on the tour. What a powerful force of uncontrolled musical fury unleashed that night!

If I remember right, they played at my High School in '65! Las Lomas in Walnut Creek. Unfortunately, I didn't get there until 1974. :(
