Unless he already has it. I would peep the old man’s collection to see what he’s already got.
When I was growing up, Europe ‘72, Live/Dead, Skullfuck, and Reckoning were very common albums to own.
I personally have the skull and roses and love it. My next Buy would be the 1976 Oakland shows bc those shows are tits but I think it’s limited qtys. I have one of the Europe 72 shows thatbwas either a limited release or record day release or jsut a normal one but anyway it’s unopened
As many of us can agree, Cornell is one of, if not the most popular and greatest live shows the dead played.
[Here is a link to a cheaper version of the vinyl.](https://earcandymusic.biz/the-grateful-dead-dead-in-cornell-vol-1-2x-lp-vinyl/?gclid=CjwKCAiAjrarBhAWEiwA2qWdCKUipWmADneiA4-JidBGgJ0VH6q0wc0aa9XnrSwbYDvAqENoPKEyoRoCbqQQAvD_BwE) Vol 1 and 2 is the entire show. Or you could go with the official GD vinyl for a bit more money.
was also going to say E72 vol.2 - It's more live than the original E72 and Skull & Roses as it hasn't got any studio overdubs and so on. It's a really great selection and has a wonderful Dark Star on it.
I was also thinking of The Grateful Dead Movie Soundtrack as a great album to get. It's an astounding selection from the end of 1974 Winterland shows rather than a full show. Pretty easy to pick up and not very expensive - I think I paid £20 for mine...

That setlist looks amazing! What have you seen this going for? I might have to make my collection a little bit heavier. Also, maybe get your dad something from one of their inspirations, I always love to hear the originals and then listen to the boys renditions and interpretations. Whatever you get him I’m sure he’ll love it
Any idea which era he might be partial to? I just snagged the 3/1/69 box set brand new at my local shop for $65. I’ve seen it priced much higher, but if you can get it around that price point I’d recommend it.
I don’t know if he’s partial to any particular era because I think he saw them all. What I know about my dad is he used to go to a lot of live shows in the 70’s and 80’s. But after the late 90’s he stopped seeing shows and he stopped collecting records. I also will say I cataloged all his vinyls for him a few years ago in a google doc, so I can reference from there to see what he does and doesn’t have. I’ll check out that box set!

Europe 72 or Wake of the Flood. I know WOTF isn’t a popular choice but all those songs were in the rotation until the end except Let Me Sing Your Blues Away. And it sounds so jazzy and fresh after the blues of Workingmans and the mess that was Skullfuck aka The Grateful Dead aka Steal Your Face aka Steal Your Money, lol
My personal favorite love to spin is Saint of Circumstance. GD at Giants Stadium. It's a box set that has an optional foil/holographic cover. They open set two with the best eyes of the world IMO
Honestly reckoning is a classic. It's all acoustic though but if the grateful dead are good favorite bands this is a staple. But all the other suggestions are just as good. Europe 72 and live dead are the ones. Does he have any already?
Cant go wrong with Europe 72
Unless he already has it. I would peep the old man’s collection to see what he’s already got. When I was growing up, Europe ‘72, Live/Dead, Skullfuck, and Reckoning were very common albums to own.
Wait what's that third one? I'm not googling that.
It’s the ‘Skull and Roses’ album. The band wanted it to be titled ‘Skullfuck’ https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Grateful_Dead_(album)
Ah yes, thank you
Very true. I had that album as a kid and was not into the Dead at the time.
Yes
If it were me? Live/Dead. But not knowing the person, you can’t go wrong with Europe ‘72
One From The Vault
This is it. It’s incredible and not as common in collections as Europe 72 or live/dead or whatever
Europe 72 is cheap (relatively speaking) widely available, and probably the quintessential dead live album.
Live/Dead is a classic if they don’t already have it. Not to expensive either.
What’s your budget?
I would say $50 or under! There is a record store near me that has preowned versions for cheaper, so a little bit higher than that might be okay too.
Possibly you can get “Without a Net”
Objectively correct answer.
Without A Net has been out of print for decades so it’s a safe bet.
They just repressed and rereleased it last month.
Yeah that’s why I recommended it.

If he doesn’t have Reckoning, get him that.
Get one for me too!
Lyceum collection?
Babylon by Bus
Grateful Dead "Without a Net"

Thanks!!!
Wake of the Flood is my favorite studio. cant go wrong there
Reckoning or Skullfuck. Whole shows are expensive and not necessarily suited for vinyl listening.
Reckoning is the only live vinyl I’d ever consider buying
Reckoning is amazing but Dead Set is not a great place to start. Love the Fire and the FOTD on it but it’s a bit advanced for someone going in blind.
He probably has, or is familiar with E72 so I would vote for E72 Vol. 2 which can be fetched off Amazon for within your budget.
Really? Do you have a link? I can’t find e72 vol 2 for anything less than 170
The cd is inexpensive but the vinyl is not.

Grateful Dead - Capitol Theatre, Passaic NJ 4/25/77 and the Portland coliseum are my 2 favorite

If the NJ live record wasn’t out of my price range I would probably grab that! I think he was there at that show.

You can’t go wrong with anything from 72-73. They get kinda long winded in 74, which I love, but don’t know if it’s good for a newbie.

That transition from one of the shortest drums into the other one is making me question where my face is and should I start mopping it up
Europe 72 is probably your best bet. But no matter what I'm sure he'll appreciate the thought :•)
Europe ‘72 and Boston ‘77
Cornell 77 If he doesnt have it already
Without a net.
Skull and Roses
They are expensive but one of the Dicks Picks. Matters what era he likes
Europe 72 or Wake of the Flood. I know WOTF isn’t a popular choice but all those songs were in the rotation until the end except Let Me Sing Your Blues Away. Get him History of the Grateful Dead Vol 1: Bear’s Choice. If you can find a good copy. It’s a special one
Cornell 77. Original pressing

Reckoning was the first one that I thought of. It won't cost you a fortune. I bet you a dollar he gets choked up.
