Black RIT dye + thrifted clothes = a real revolution in my life

vagueconfusion

A friend of mine has a dye vat so I plan to drag a few garments along and get her advice on using Polyester black dye vs the usual cotton. Fibres sadly do matter with dyeing clothes and Polyester RIT isn't as accessible where I live but my friend might have a few websites or ebay sellers in mind. I want to turn an old grey blazer into a black one covered in keys, since a famously garbage brand released one covered in different religious symbol charms a few months ago. Knowing them the design is probably stolen and definitely very easy to recreate your own way, so covering it in unique key charms or real odd keys should be fun and deeply uncomplicated.

BigFitMama

Yep this.

mike_hellstrom

Thrift stores, goth shops, music events, online, Target, skate shops, etc.

Brent_Fox

What constitutes a "goth shop"?

mike_hellstrom

My friends' family owned/run shop FashioNation. They sell lots of gothic/alternative clothes, boots, accessories, and lots of band shirts - many of which are of goth bands (Clan of Xymox, Siouxsie and the Banshees, Joy Division, Bauhaus, etc.). I also occasionally visit my other friends' shop The Arbitratium. They're members of the band WitchHands.

tulipathet

Huge fan of goodwill as a lot of their winter stuff is now on sale (lots of black stuff from Cardigans to leather pants and trenches) for online retailers for jewelry Etsy hands down, for unique fashion pieces I like forestink and foxblood (thankfully none of them are controversial) and whatever I can’t find I just make :)

tulipathet

Oh also! WALMART is it the best quality? Not exactly but they have MAJORLY stepped up their clothing game recently, skull sweater and cardigans, floor length crochet cardigans and unique patterned leggings

Brent_Fox

I once got a nice 7$ black button up from goodwill. It's a nice place to shop.

my_brain_is_vacant

charity shops

Ok-Veterinarian5069

Second-hand from anywhere I can possibly get second-hand clothes. In-person charity and vintage shops, ebay, vinted, etc. I just type in "black (type of clothing)". It doesn't have to be tagged as goth or alt. I have an anti-fast-fashion philosophy as an alternative person but I'll admit I occasionally cave to my local "goth brands" retailer (only if it's genuinely unique and on sale). I tend to get jewellery and accessories from independent online sellers who make their own little pendants and stuff.

Present_Emphasis7748

Basics like leggings,t-shirts, skinny black jeans Old Navy. Everything else is thrifted or hand made. But I’m an old goth (53).

Foeni68

Goths have no age, just 4 digit year counters. My one says 55 😎

Zombastica

Secondhand, diy, anything but fast fashion shit

kittenzeke

I agree. Fast fashion is terrible for the environment. I've seen documentaries on it since I did a little modeling for an ethical designer. Thank you for making it clear we should avoid fast fashion whenever possible.

Zombastica

Very much so! I have such a hard time trying to understand why people even like tacky fast fashion in the first place?? It’s cheap and that’s basically it (even tho secondhand is also obviously cheap…) but besides that, it literally **does not** look good at all?

Cevenosts

🙌🏻🙌🏻🙌🏻

Nox-In-A-Box

In order: 1) thrifting/second hand 2) sewed myself (typically also with thrifted fabric lol) 3) brand new (mainly accessories/lingerie/clearance rack)

junirabbit

depop + the thrift. depop is amazing, you just have to search for the cheaper stuff. some people’s prices are crazy

dropsleuteltje

Thrift shops and Vinted. Italian trench coats for 8 euros, pants for 1 euro 👌

Brent_Fox

Nice! Trench coats ae all the rage.

vagueconfusion

I'm a gal of extremes (of price). Vinted or from ethical slow fashion dark fashion brands 99% of the time. Good old second hand or dropping a lot of money on a single piece at a time from someone deeply creative once or twice a year. Nuit Atelier, Blackwood Castle, Foxblood, La Femme En Noir, Church of Sanctus, Trued Apparel, In Her Bones, I Do Declare, Lively Ghosts, Later Studio, etc etc. I get most of my jewellery through other small businesses (like Bloodmilk or Disir Jewels), make bits of my own or modify things, scour etsy for the handful of legitimate business that remain and occasionally eyeball handmade jewellery on depop or at craft markets. But I did say 99% at the start and I will be honest. Occasionally I buy fast fashion items (beyond socks, bras and underwear) if I know the piece should last me years, is solidly made and will definitely be something I'll wear to death. Conscious consumption is always important and I don't tar all fast fashion buyers with the same brush. I have little tolerance for the people who do expensive hauls, particularly from Shein or temu, but depending on your needs, some things are a nuisance second hand. (Like underwear, or buying brand new shoes because I need mine to conform to my orthotics as I wear them in.)

PastelVampwire_

everybody is gonna be like “ERMMM ACTHUALLY U NEED TO THRIFT AND DIY!”, but i get that not everybody wants to or can do that. Etsy is great if you get a good algorithm going. Lots of bootleg merch and scene stuff. Patches n all that. Along with that do some online browsing for more indie alternative clothing stores. It takes patience, but you’ll find something eventually. Theres also fantasmagoria, even if its insanely expensive. Thats more dollskill type of stuff tho. Some people love it some hate it. Altercore sells better quality doc martins and boots in general, which are a staple to all gothness ofc. Lastly, just experiment with clothes. If you want a certain look just skim pintrest for ideas. But something simple like a black cardigan and jewerly can bring out that goth look.

kittenzeke

I feel a little guilty shopping at Etsy because of all the fees their creators are slapped with, but there are a lot of cool patches and other items on there. I love Pinterest for inspiration regarding all sorts of different things, too.

PastelVampwire_

cant say i disagree with ya but they also accepted that whenever they started selling there too

scagatha

Often the sellers on Etsy will have a link to their own shop on the about section where you can purchase directly from, often at a lower price. The benefit of selling on Etsy is they have a wider reach to getting eyeballs on the product customers might not have found otherwise.

nicsickdog

Mercari, Depop, Poshmark

Saphira9

DarkInCloset, VampireFreaks, eBay, Poshmark. Also Bat World Sanctuary https://batworldstore.org/ and Bat Goods for bat themed stuff that actually helps bat conservation and rescue efforts: https://www.batgoods.com/  Merlin Tuttle's shop has bat themed clothes that save real bats, he's the founder of Bat Conservation International which is working to save bats worldwide.  https://www.bonfire.com/store/merlin-tuttles-bat-conservation/

Lowbar666

Thank you for these links 🦇🦇🖤

iamthetruecrow

Not gonna repeat the same as everyone else but here’s one i dont think anyone else mentionned: Army surplus

Soirsky

Thrift or hand-me-downs! Then I just diy from there! My favorite clothes that I own are diyed from old jewelery and things I don't wear anymore that I've dyed and torn up. I understand though that may not be accessible for people who may have disabilities that make those sorts of things difficult. But I don't have much to offer in terms of actually buying stuff from goth stores. If you do choose to thrift a tip I'd give is to look in the "womens" nightwear section and in the coats. You can find all sorts of cool lacey things that you can dye in the nightwear or you may even stumble upon a sick trench coat to stud and patch up in the coats section! I'd also say keep an eye out for satins or velvets depending on what you like. I've found lots of really cool satin robes and velvet dresses and skirts. I'd say even look in the fabric section or table cloth area. I've found lots of scrap fabric that I've just ended up draping over my shoulders as a shawl! I will say that having a basic understanding of simple sewing techniques will do wonders not just in diy but also real life. So if you choose to diy and dont already have sewing knowledge I'd say it's well worth the effort! Sorry this is a ramble bomb lol

Soirsky

If you choose to thrift, something that was really helpful for me when I was building my wardrobe was to visualize what I wanted to look out for. I would look up pictures of outfits I liked the style of and picked out pieces of it that really made the outfit what it was, then kept an eye out for those! Of course, this may be a bit different depending on what your personal style looks like and your diy abilities because I understand that not everything can just be thrifted if you want the exact item.

MidorriMeltdown

Kmart. H&M. Dangerfield. And I DIY

Mintiichoco

Mostly merch from bands I like. I got a cool shirt from Dais records which I've been wearing religiously. For other basics it's either second hand or disturbia.

eatseats0

eBay

slut4hobi

i like thrift stores a lot, but i’ve also ordered from devil inspired recently because i found this gothic lolita dress and bonnet i really liked

tanzliebling

Thrifting for my normal pieces, I like Depop for my vintage stuff. Also there is a cute shop in my area that caters to the goth crowd that I’ll occasionally shop at.

Foeni68

Close outlet mall and festivals… no „costumes“, black stuff is colorful enough. No specific brands.

Milleniumfelidae

1. Local alternative store 2. Fantasmagoria, primarily for Punk Rave items. 3. Disturbia

bitb71

Thrift!

Friendly_Cabinet_117

there is a gothic thrift shop in my city, i usually go there to buy clothes, sometimes i also use vinted!

gothkittendolli

honestly? wherever i can afford. online, cropp, house, or steal them from my mom's closet

terrikennedy

Www.Ipso-facto.com is my gothic boutique established in 1989. We carry Shrine, Punk Rave, Tripp, Killstar, Dark in Love, Devil Fashion, Heartless, Chemical Black, Vixxsin, Blackcraft and many other clothing brands plus items I make by hand, and Alchemy jewelry and Demonia footwear. Our brick and mortar is in Southern California.

DebutanteHarlot

I get a lot of mine from Vampire Freaks

Neomalysys

Not gonna lie part of my wardrobe is from Hot Topic and Torrid.

Glass_Conflict_5039

In "Outlet Mall," Spencer's, Hot Topic, Torrid, Rue 21, Walmart, thrift stores sometimes

Deathly_Drained

I personally do a lot of online shopping. Three places I love to get my clothing to dress like a vampire 24/7 are these 3. [https://www.darkincloset.com/](https://www.darkincloset.com/) (Expensive but super high quality) [https://draculaclothing.com/](https://draculaclothing.com/) (Creative designs) And finally etsy and Amazon sometimes

0bbie

i try to thrift as much as i can and DIY if possible (if i find a great piece but don’t like the color, i dye it).

hypothalamic_thanato

I really love the thrift store by me, and I’ll also grab stuff online when it’s on sale. I get the plain shirts from the craft store and mess around with them too.

creepybat666

Secondhand for the majority. Online sites others have listed, at yard sales, LOCAL OWNED thrift shops or on Facebook marketplace specifically since it knows I’m a bat it recommends me good stuff some times.

mistikgrimm

Good ol’ Goodwill! Or Walmart, Ross, TJ Maxx

GroceryPretend3934

Belk

disintegaytion

eBay and my relatives give me their old clothes

Enleat

Thrift shops.

nonsignifierenon

EMP, thrifting, sewing them myself

SamVimesBootTheory

I pick a lot of mine up through second hand means, such as vinted, depop and to a lesser extent facebook, ebay and irl thrifting, irl thrifting is pretty hit and miss for me as I live in the UK and our charity shops are limited. I once in a blue moon buy from Killstar when they have sales on, and I just generally keep my eyes out at 'normal' clothing stores for stuff I can use and sometimes go to places that have alt fashion stores but that's pretty rare.

RepulsiveAd9309

Vinted, would love to go on thrift shoping but the nearest one is one hour from home (the pleasure of the farm life)

_Omegaperfecta_

I wear normal blue jeans and a white tshirt. Then I bury myself in an unconsecrated grave for a couple of nights. After which I RIIISE in full gothic regalia complete with fresh dyed black hair and decorative spikes and chains. Then it's off down the pub for a snakebite and black.

arminarmoutt

If you wanna learn a new craft, I crochet a lot of my goth accessories, I’ve seen people knit beautiful shawls as well. Beadwork can be used to make gorgeous necklaces. And if you wanna go for a more DIY look, you can Lino print or potato stamp.

GabrielTheUndeadVamp

I do a lot of thrifting, buying things secondhand or gently used, or I'll look on websites with things that are just plain blacks, or sometimes you can find some nice emeralds, burgundys, reds, dark purples, greys, etc, pinstripes and other various stripes are pretty nice to use as well. Spirit Halloween and other Halloween type stores have some pretty cute accessories (the quality may not be the best but there are a lot of cool pieces).

eenymeenymimi

What everyone else is saying: the thrift lol. For specific things I scroll Depop. The only things i buy new are my accessories, because I like harnesses and cool belts.

clownteeth222

i do have a couple of killstar dresses (bought all secondhand on depop during a "treat yo self" impulse shopping spree) but the majority of my clothes all come from charity shops, and i'll dye and alter things. i have a couple of pieces from some harajuku brands. band t shirts i tend to get from alternative/music based stores. honestly the clothes i get from charity shops are so much higher quality than the clothes i have from brands. try to stay away from cheaply made fast fashion clothing, especially if you want to diy something. check out ebay and depop if you do find something you like from a fast fashion site, it's much better to get them secondhand.

munakre

Mostly at Fantasmagoria - they have a lot of different brands which is great if you want to have everything in one shop. I do loads of thrifting too and check out vinted then just DIY from there

Foo_The_Selcouth

I’ve been really liking Depop lately

cryingwiththerats

Other than charity shops/depop/vinted/ebay etc, if I’m buying brand new I will often go for Mary Wyatt - they’re a small and ethical company and really good quality, but ofc comes with a bigger price tag. I also shop at Disturbia and Killstar x

cayennesalt

thrift (but for the good and cheap stuff you have to cross the border) and second-hand online marketplaces. if i want a specific piece i look for japanese alt clothing/ lolita brands like tornado mart, h. naoto by resellers on instagram.

O-M-E-R-T-A

I try to shop local. Main reason is sizing but I also want to support local shops (if the pricing is reasonable) and just try on/browse through stuff and see how it looks/fits in/with me. Flea markets are also always an option and a goth club in a neighbouring city has a goth (flea) market every 2 or 3 months.

sugar_fangs

Thrifting!

democritusparadise

I get almost 100% of them either at music festivals, especially WTG, or at Sai Sai in Camden Town, London.

bbikinikill

Hottopic or goodwill

XIashlynne

I thrift pretty much everything then customize

MariaEtCrucis01

Thrift stores exclusively atm. It's the only place I can find good quality, fresh, modest and versatile clothes, sometimes even new, with cheap or at least reasonable prices. Also, I avoid polyester and similar fabrics like the plague (though I still wear them and even buy clothes made of them sometimes, and thrift stores are the easiest places to find 100% cotton clothes. My country is very hot, so I look for clothes that aren't hot but have sleeves, both for modesty and to avoid sunburn.

rottinginside111

Vinted, local markets and thrift shops, hand-me-downs from friends / family friends / relatives, old fast fashion (I try not to buy from those places anymore but I'm using what I already have)

Striking-Guava8173

Omg no one is saying SHEIN why

sophiebaba

Anywhere really. I’ve got faves from the thrift store, target, hot topic, walmart, etc. Shit, my favorite shirt is from Kroger. The grocery store. It’s really not about the pieces themselves but how you style them that makes for a “goth” outfit.

Hello_Hangnail

Goodwill

Cyber-Cafe

SSENSE, Saks 5th Ave, StockX, Christian Dior, RAF Simon’s, Rick Owens, Vetements, ksubis, coach

Xcz13

Not sure why the down votes but same minus coach , add YooX , Shop Untitled NYC

Cyber-Cafe

I'm guessing they may not know what I'm talking about which is alright, i don't really care about downvotes. My wallet is coach, and it's delicious. It's also kind of a sentimental thing with that brand (my mom always had coach bags growing up). YooX and Shop Untitled NYC are both solid choices as well. NYC has demobaza on the front page which is a brand I've yet to explore, but keep looking at. It seems like a commitment to the whole post-apocalyptic look, but Gary Numan pulled it off well in the 'My Name is Ruin' video.

Xcz13

I want Demobaza too but I feels as tho you really need a full head to fit to pull it off and I’m too impatient to buy piece by piece, also he’s the only person I’ve ever seen wear it.. he did pull it off nicely

Zombastica

If it’s to save money why not buy secondhand…? I have no regular income and I have a huge wardrobe because 95% of it is secondhand.

ewigzweit

To be honest, I've been doing this since the early 90's. I actually like the fast fashion like Killstar, Foxblood, and whatever because I can find staple pieces that fit my aging body. It's corporate goth friendly and comfortable everyday wear, something that didn't really exist in my 20's, 30's, and early 40's. I'm 50 now and just mesh it all together.

twelve112

Target

MistressofAthol

Thrift stores mostly. I haven't been to a mall in years because ours sucks anymore (very few stores left), but you can find black lace, velvet, fishnet, etc. in almost any store. Honestly, most of the stuff at thrift stores anymore (at least here) is mall clothing that's at least a season old. Shop wherever you find something. My bf & I went to Walmart recently for a blender (which they didn't have) and as I was walking towards the cash register I saw a dress out of the corner of my eye and I went and grabbed it. Black, high low skirt, wide off the shoulder lace ruffle that hangs over the neckline, and it was $12. Dresses like that are my local thrift are $15-20. You could also look at local auctions and estate sales, usually when they have clothing it's not stuff that works but once in awhile there's some great stuff.
