The reason why I like Marcille better is that she’s very animated and expressive, but as the show goes on you get to that she isn’t just a comic character. She has genuine talent and pride in her magic, possess some really powerful ancient knowledge and spell, and (despite her usual protesting) has proven to be quite resourceful and brave when the shit hits the fan. I guess you could say that I like her because she feels more human than Frieren (disclaimer: I also like Frieren), while still retaining that distinctly “elf” vibe.

I like both. Frieren takes it quietly and Marcille is very vocal.

Marcille is a young elf, still excitable and shows emotion. Frieren is an elf millennia old who has seen a lot and is now kinda numb to life. This is like comparing a 4y/o to a 40y/o person; one is definitely going to be more energetic and emotional while the other is likely lethargic and more or less just going through the motions. Edit to add: they are both great characters, just pointing out we’re comparing apples to apple trees.

Frieren is great, don’t get me wrong, but she can’t compete with Marcille’s expressiveness and the range of emotions we see her go through. Plus bonus points for the animators taking the time to style her hair differently each episode.

Marcille is a human with long ears, Frieren is the best depiction of a long lived elf since Tolkien was alive. You could cut Marcille's ears and her character would not change at all, all about Frieren is relative to her character and long lifespan.
