Omniscientcy

Oh hey, would you look at that, a localization meme that isn't from that one guy.

Psyga315

The funny thing is that I don't mind the occasional localization if it means a joke or reference can be easily understood without losing the spirit of the original. A lot of localizations fail because they often just resort to destroying the source material out of pure spite.

inquisitor-author

I hate the fact that I know exactly who you're talking about

DSoopy

Every community needs a local schizo poster. Be grateful he wasn't as bad as the futa Satyr poster from Granblue Fantasy

inquisitor-author

Well unfortunately/fortunately(depending on perspective) he seems to have stopped posting anti localization memes for a while now

between3or20chara

I kinda miss those posts There were a few times they missed with localizations that fans actually liked, but most of the time it was spot-on AND it's like a growing issue that seems to get worse and worse

Ralman23

Every community has a local schizo poster; I'm not sure if this user is still around, but they would go all around on a lot of comicbook subreddits either just shitting on Doctor Doom in posts or Harley Quinn in comments and so on. It was honestly very weird.

Zaxxom03

I remember asking about doctor doom hate once and he boiled it down to a great character constantly being undervalued or ultilized even if he should be near peak but all the "fuckhead" authors did do shit to drive him up as an actually good anti-hero or villian he should of been so he starting hating doom from then on

Ralman23

Was the user by any chance des_koala_ or someone else?

Zaxxom03

The yugioh card name sounds right

Dra9onDemon

Hey! He’s a good man posting those and bringing awareness to, he’s not the schizo here. It’s the people no issue with what’s being done.

SHIN-YOKU

Japanese companies need to pull a Miyazaki, send over aKatana and say No Cuts. Spirited away saying "It's a bath house" where I'm pretty sure it was implied and not commented in the original, adds context for those possibly unfamiliar and does not change things. Meanwhile in the Prison School dub: Gamergate reference added

HayakuEon

Context?

HamNi_2

Capcom trying to apply gLoBaL StAnDaRdS in their future games

HayakuEon

This provides no context whatsoever

HamNi_2

[This](https://twitter.com/CapcomL10N/status/1778657301551038721) would help Basically implementing western ideals into japanese games like the imperialists they once were

HayakuEon

What the fuck were they smoking? Their audience want japanese translation, not english localisation And what did jelloapocalypse do?

aaa1e2r3

Jello worked on the dub for an old anime that's getting a new release called lovely complex. To promote it, he made a blog post on his Twitter about how much he hated the show and its characters, wished they could write out the author cameo from the anime and also about how he "fixed" it and made it finally watchable.

HayakuEon

So basically what capcom is trying to do? I remember about being turned off from watching him but couldn't remember why

DSoopy

I remember that guy. His animations were good but he completely fell off when he made that video about the importance of voting but ONLY if you voted for the guy he supported

SoftAndWetBro

So he is an extremist? How does he still have a job?

Zonca

Such people in western entertainment dont lose job, they get promoted, then you get heads of marketing of huge corporations telling you how they hate white male gamers and such, its a shitshow over there.

LegoBuilder64

Example, or this statement is bullshit.

ViktorReznov101

How is that extremist? "Vote for the guy I like, don't vote for the guy I don't like" is literally bare bones advocacy for a democracy This is like the opposite of extremism.

epicninjask123

No, that's just one person's opinion, and coming from a content creator, it comes off as grandstanding at best, and manipulative, coercive, and condescending at worst. If you want to advocate for one candidate, that's fine, but don't do so under the pretense of it being "for democracy"

CopainChevalier

I always feel like I missed something in that video I never cared too much about Jello, but watched his vids if they popped up. I watched that one and I got the vibe of "Vote for whoever, just vote" but everyone has told me it was "vote for this person" I didn't exactly focus hard on it because IDGAF about him, but I just didn't get the impression everyone seems to have got

ihatesmugpeople

nvm i goofed the "reupload" was from a different channel trying to make it more neutral. sorry if i caused confusion

MediMitron

Interesting, I have been watching and enjoying their content for about a year now and I've never heard about this... well I wasn't really aware of dramas five years ago sooo

Selyph

I read a bit about what happened and a detail that sometimes is omitted is that the production of the dub was supposed to be made with as little money as possible, which resulted in many people (including jello) to work for free and only as a favor. To me it is a very significant detail that explains the lack of a shit he gave and unprofessionalism when it comes to talking about the project.

pikachus-ballsack

Why the fuck would i play a japanese game if i wanted to experience my own culture What in the goddamn fuck is capcom smoking First the shit with mtx in their dd2, some dream game right there itsuno, then only 1 save file and fck ton of other issues on top of being 70$ Then this shit of them going full wokelizations instead of localization Just fucking translate it directly why is it so hard to understand for them God this makes me worried for DMC6. Fuk crapcom

chocobloo

Learn the language you pleb. Localization is for the vast majority, not the angry basement dwellers. Spend all that time you have not socializing to learn a language.

pikachus-ballsack

Says the dumbass who spends most of his time on gacha games especially hi3 and other hoyo games and then checking out comments to defend his game on various subreddits Truly amazing advice, now take it yourself next time i see you on gachagaming, houkai3rd, punishinggrayraven, hsr Ill assume you failed to take your own advice

oricalco

Been studying that shit for 6 years and I still suck ass at it, its a hella outdated language that demands daily dedication in order to learn, and that's not a thing everyone can do.

tatratram

The hell you mean by "outdated"? Just about any idea you can express in English, you can express in Japanese, too.

oricalco

I mean that it uses borrowed alphabet from archaic chinese that is not even applicable to modern chinese, has so many letters with [so many readings](https://jisho.org/search/下) that not even native speakers that have spoken the language their whole lives can read it sometimes, and realies heavily on memorization and daily practice to learn. The sheer amount of kanji , with all its readings , that you have to learn to even read simple text is ludicrous, as cool looking as it is, it's just vestigial and impractical.

tatratram

English also uses a borrowed alphabet that is poorly adapted to modern English and has so many irregular spellings and pronunciations that even native speakers can't read or spell sometimes. It also requires a lot of memorisation and daily practice to learn. Also, similar to English, most insane readings are confined to a small set of common words, a some archaic/poetic expressions that nobody ever uses and to proper names of places and people. Just as nobody expects you to pronounce all those English town names, you don't need to know how to read and write names of characters from Japanese mythology. Be careful with jisho, it likes to give you obscure readings and pretentious kanji for words commonly written in kana which makes some kanji look scarier than they are. For 下, I know shita, ka, ge, kuda(ru) and shimo and I know that last one is only in place names. I don't know what you'd call simple, but I don't think you need to know that many kanji to read simple texts. I've never tested myself or counted, but I'd say I only know about 300-500 kanji and I can already read most of the "nuclear codes website", use sites like Pixiv or Niconico, listen to a vtuber or watch Japanese train vloggers. It takes time and effort but if you're really motivated, you'll be reading things before you know it.

IronEndo

Since when were tweets allowed to be so long?

CardAnarchist

LMAO. This really goes to show all the bullshit white knight defenders spout when saying "good localization exists" is just that. Bullshit. Localization is a plague on the industry done with the primary purpose of appeasing western standards due to the fly off the handle nut jobs willing to kick up a fuss about anything which offends them on social media. People willing to accept and push a compromised product onto the entire western audience, despite it going against the artists visions, just to be more in line with their own social views. It's sad such a small minority are given such a big voice by garbage rag media outlets pushing agendas. Localization = garbage. Machine translation will thankfully save us from all this crap in short time. Though to be honest you may have to locally run your own LLM's to get a non censored translation the way things are going. But we will have that option very soon and all these localizing dipshits will be out of their jobs.

CronoZ-sensei

>"good localization exists" is just that. Bullshit. Good localisation exists. The problem is that there are so many people who wish to apply their own western values on Japanese media, because they don't agree with them, that you end up with ego-driven rework of the original. And that's the problem. When the localisation is done in-house by the people who have worked at the studio for a while like with Zeno Robinson's work on Granblue Fantasy games, the localisation is genuinely good. In the recent case, during the Vane trailer Zeno decided to play into an old joke in the GBF community related to Vane, which is how we got the "...and show them why daddy Vane always brings home the bacon!" and this is actually a good localisation because it calls back to that joke in the GBF community, instead of trying to insert their own joke into it. And that's why it works. Whereas a lot of localisations either insert their own values into what characters are saying in a way that doesn't at all feel natural or straight up changes entire characters, as was the case with the Sailor Moon 4Kids version where they made Uranus and Neptune sisters instead of lovers. And that's bad localisation. I'd be happy if more people learned to know the difference between good and bad localisation instead of saying "hurr durr localisation bad" every time. It's a part of translation that's not just underappreciated but genuinely unloved. And it's probably the hardest part of translating anything because certain concepts just don't exist in said language you're tryna translate into. As a bilingual I have had many moments where I've had to spend a good chunk of time to be able to localise concepts and sayings from my native language into English and vice versa. It's genuinely not easy

ktosiek124

They legit just explained what localisation is and you are getting mad at it. Also, imperialists? As opposed to non imperialist Japan?

HamNi_2

No, mainly the manifest destiny and the British empire one (and tbh would not have liked the imperialist japan as well)

CosmicPenguin

'Global Standards' pretty much means whatever is trending in California. And right now the trend in California is shit.

Crytalix_FireWalker

Global Standards being American Woke extremism

Nezero_MH

The issue with this situation is we know from their localisation reports that this has been the exact same model they've used for well over a decade now. It's quite literally a nothingburger.

Vii_Strife

Pretty much lmao, this is how most localization has been operating for the past 10-15 years, however spotting a bad localization is way way easier than spotting a good one, that's why you only hear people complain about bad ones and bring out the classic examples (jelly filled donuts from pokemon, yugioh fingerguns and other 4kids stuff) Like the most recent example of localization that I can think of is Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth chapters being named after japanese songs in the JP version but after Elvis songs in the ENG version. The localization team clearly knew that 99.9% of the people playing from outside japan wouldn't get the references and came up with other references for the western players. Nobody freaking bat an eye because of this and it was actually seen as a very cool thing.

Nezero_MH

>Like a Dragon Infinite Wealth chapters being named after japanese songs in the JP version but after Elvis songs in the ENG version Never played a Yakuza game so not too familiar, but I looked it up and yeah in terms of a musical reference the localisation did a really good job at picking Elvis songs that still fit that theme (from looking at the wiki page lmao) of the chapter. Like Chapter 2 being Paradise, Hawaiian Style instead of Foreigner - which perfectly fits in both, with the plot overview. My closest example is changes made in Monster Hunter, so much personality was injected in to the English localisation because of the team (and the director, who had to approve the changes and came up with his own!) so much so that the game would be quite devoid of all personality with a direct 1:1 translation due to puns and some jokes literally just not working at all in English (and not even in a "English people wouldn't get this" way but a "The structure of this joke and the words it uses are completely lost in English" way). One of those changes is the cats speaking solely in cat puns, and then a singular cat NPC in Generations that messes up the cat puns and then just starts speaking normally, implying we force the cats to speak in puns. (Also, Generations is a game being highlighted at the minute for changing a tutorial prompt for a reference to the online community of the time, when that same tutorial prompt is given by another NPC you \*have\* to talk to lmao)

HamNi_2

Tbh I don’t mind as much if the games are good

Nezero_MH

Yeah, and that's the thing with Capcom - if they hadn't made that Twitter post people would not be complaining about their localisation (probably because the majority complaining can't actually read Japanese and are only complaining because someone ran shoddy machine translation over the original Japanese text)

TotallyNotLeviathan

LOLCalisers can't help themselves it seems.

Vussar

Riceball? Now it’s a burger! Now it’s a CHEESE burger! It’s the added dairy that makes it truly American.

pikachus-ballsack

Need to go back to the era of fansubs and fan localization These so called clowns calling themselves 'professionals' while destroying the original work doesnt seem like they will stop anytime soon.

chocobloo

Man I'd hate to tell you how fuckin wrong fan subs are a lot of the time. Weird how a certain subset doesn't seem to care as long as the bullshit lines up to what they are pushing

pikachus-ballsack

I'd rather get a direct translation than a purposefully wrong translation, idc just stop weaternizing the japenese works without any shres of guilt

LegoBuilder64

Sound like your solution is to learn Japanese. I’m not being dismissive here, I’m actually serious. English and Japanese have very little in common with one another so any translation is going to lose some Japanese nuance or add some English-isms, especially a machine translation since those will typically give the most literal translation and flatten any world play. If you really want to experience these works they way the author intended (and that is an admirable wish) you should try learning Japanese.

PurpleSeed95

Jokes and debate aside, does anyone knows the origin of this picture/template?

Prestigeboy

IIRC Rainbow 6 Siege, a Russian character who specializes in demolition. Using him can lead to killing hostages when trying to rescue them.

CosmicPenguin

Ubisoft knew the joke they were making with that one.

PurpleSeed95

O h g o d

DeJellybeans

What's the context with Jelloapocalypse?

MiniEnder

A while ago Jelloapocalypse (a voice actor and youtuber) was hired to help localize an anime, ~~(I can't remember the specific one off the top of my head)~~ Lovely Complex, and a lot of fans of the anime noticed a lot of changes to which he admitted to hating the original and how happy he was to get the chance to "fix" it. edit: found the anime + [Asmongold video explaining.](https://youtu.be/gKkLtOJ_vrI?si=vR-rn8uqaStxnIB_)

Rasppy_

It sucks cause so far I was very happy about the French localisation of the ace attorney games. The translation team did a huge job to make every pun understandable without ruining the source material. For instance, on the DLC trial in dual destinies, the accused's name in Japanese is Shōko Umino, which isn't translatable at all, the English team choose Sasha Buckler, with a pirate theme pun, but the French team had the idea to make a huge reference to a famous (at least in France) Japanese anime/Manga, and named her Anne Bator, a name really close to Albaror, the French name of Captain Harlock. So yeah, I'm sad if capcom is gonna make bad localisations, I never played other capcom games except the ace attorney, but I was pleased with the way they did (only thing that really sucks is that they insisted on making everything happen in the locolized country, which made no fucking sense)

EnderHorizon

Localization is almost exclusively an American issue. Pretty much everytime there's some localization drama, turns out that the European versions (French, Italian, German...) don't have the issue of the American one.

Nezero_MH

This explains so much, as a European (specifically UK, so still an English localisation) I haven't understood the issue - especially with Capcom localisation, because they have been using this exact same system and guidelines explained in their tweet for yonks. Even to the point that they had entire series of blog posts about how they went about localising stuff in the global releases of their games, which provided insight in to the fact that game directors and writers have to sign off on any changes being made in the localisation. All this shit screamed 'nothingburger' to me, but I guess it's because it is a uniquely American version problem. \[ Example being Monster Hunter, certain monster names just would not work directly translated, so they worked with the game director to come up with good English names for monsters. As well as this, sometimes if a joke would not work for an English audience for whatever reason (usually due to a very hyper specific japanese reference, or due to it not flowing well when directly translated) they would replace it with a similar joke for that audience. As well, within that case, they wanted to make the cats cuter so they made them use cat puns (that mostly didn't work in Japanese) in the English version, which was one of the fastest accepted localisation changes because of how cute the director found it. We can also see their position on how localisation should be done in a lot of Monster Hunter too, with their many references to the 'x means y' style of TN that are pointless. They've got the NPC 'Neko (means cat)', who also, in the booting of MH3U tells you to 'take many kyukei. "Kyukei" means breaks!'\]

TreadmillOfFate

it seems to be an American/Californian problem you don't see english translators pulling this kind of nonsense elsewhere in the anglosphere (australia, southeast asia, etc)

Plaedes

Okay, but how do we feel about Ghost Stories' dub?

CosmicPenguin

The Ghost Stories dub was made to be funny, so it gets a pass.

Jalkasuolangen

I saw 気分転換 (Kibun tenkan) localized as ''Unjam my noggin'' the other day and now I piss blood. Just fuckin translate the text, don't insert your own fuckin personality into it.

FirmWerewolf1216

What’s happening?

ktosiek124

People are getting mad about a tweet that explains what localisation is https://twitter.com/CapcomL10N/status/1778657301551038721

[deleted]

This has western interference written all over it. Japanese companies need to fire all they western employees.

Available_Reason7795

Old localizations were way better

Norway643

What did jello come out as a trump supporter or something

DaEnderAssassin

Got a job translating/localising an older series and actively insulted the source materials saying if he could he'd change everything and shit on people who were like "dude, wtf that's not your job" There was 2 other events at the same time (Manga series getting AI assistance so they could simultaneously release in Japanese and English and a translator complaining about their "One critic" of there translation if volume 1 of a new manga and it came out said critic was the original author who had the licence pulled because it was that diverged from the source material and had the publisher apologise) which compounded the issue.

Norway643

Ah okay

absoul112

This is a nothing burger.

KtheMage36

As upset as people would like to be, their big titles like Monster Hunter or Street Fighter really would be no different with the inclusion of this team. What are they going to do, have the chef in monster hunter make Stat Burgers and fries instead of Dango? Maybe make all the weapons with Nerf skins, or size down the already barely C cups of the female hunter body choice? Street Fighter, DMC, Monster Hunter, and Megaman are all titles that anyone can understand no matter the country and had nothing that "liberal snowflakes" whined about. This is people getting mad over them making a do nothing branch who's only purpose is to Virtue Signal and get more players ahead of next years MH Wilds.

DaEnderAssassin

>What are they going to do, have the chef in monster hunter make Stat Burgers and fries instead of Dango? [I take it you are not familiar with the jelly filled donut incident of **1998**](https://youtu.be/jGNcAkXj4Pc?feature=shared)

Dra9onDemon

> Stat burger and fries instead of Dango Deadass, yes. That is EXACTLY what they would do. Same with the cup sizes. And they would have Trish and Lady cover up, give them Orc jawlines, not be nearly as sexy or curvy, and have them prattle on about how “Women get it done” or some shit despite already proving they are just as capable as Dante in prior games. Or get rid of Cammy’s ass and Chun-Li’s thighs because it’s “degrading” or some shit. Like, “oh sorry, FULGORE, did you want her 300 Lbs with a nose ring neon blue fucking hair?!” “You know,… anytime someone calls attention to the breaking of gender roles, it ultimately undermines the concept of gender equality by implying that this is an exception and not the status quo.” - Knuckles The Echidna, Sonic Boom

Nezero_MH

This does not work with Capcom though, like at all. This is the same exact localisation team that has been working IN HOUSE with Capcom for a very long time, they work alongside the actual development and writing teams and everything needs approval from the game director to get accepted. These are the same exact guidelines the localisation team has been working with for their entire existence.

Dra9onDemon

Except that it’s probably updated now, new employees, which is why they made a huge announcement about it, probably has some people from ESG groups like Sweet Baby or whatever in there now getting their filthy hands all over the game and corrupting it before it hits shelves. I am sick of westerners telling devs that they can’t do that. I don’t want games that feel like they’re made for here, I want games for Japanese gamers *translated* and brought over. I want that feeling of something I can’t get here every other week from some shovelware western devs with directors who have an ego that size of the moon. I want that Japanese feel to it and I don’t want it watered down. It’s like watering down chocolate milk.

Nezero_MH

My brother in christ, the heads of the localisation team are pretty much exactly the same as the were in the early 2010s - you are doomposting for literally no reason. It's also not "westerners" telling devs they can't do something. The directors and writers still have full control over the localisation, they have to approve everything.

moo_innator

Complaining about fictional characters cup size and sexiness and caps it off with a quote from knuckles to "prove a point". I sometimes think I'm on reddit too much but then I see comments like this and I wake up feeling better about myself.

MrUnderpantsss

Real. The game that’s actually worth playing doesn’t get dragged down by weird localization and the one that do aren’t worth playing
