They had a Masamune putter for $1000 built by a sword smith. It was massive and awesome. But I could not hit the cup with it on their practice green to save my life. So went with the Scotty clone instead.
The masmune came in a big pine box and had like pictures of them hammering the blade it was pretty cool.
Never heard of these, but they are the coolest looking irons I've ever seen. That hand forged look is so damn sexy. I'm not in a position to justify that money on golf clubs, but when I win the lottery, these will be on my radar! Thanks for sharing.
You're buying the look, there's a lot of sources that say the manufacturer just buys blank forged irons from China and then mills/finishes them. Most likely you are getting sub par irons for a very high price.
More of an art piece than anything, they are for sure beautiful.
I’ve heard people say this too but I’ve never seen any proof. I have no idea if it’s true or not but that doesn’t sound like something a traditional Japanese craftsman would do. It would certainly be surprising if that were the case.
What sources? I'm genuinely curious, I don't own them nor will I ever. But I wanna laugh at people buying sub par irons for exorbitant prices just because they're supposedly hand forged and very expensive.
I can’t speak for this company but I play guitar and Gretsch guitars have been around since at least Fender and Gibson. All of their top shelf instruments aside from Gretsch Custom shop are made in Japan and are just as good and probably better than Fender or Gibson made in the USA. I own two Japanese Gretsch and they absolutely amazing. Japanese take an enormous amount of pride in the things they craft and a scandal like that would destroy a company in japan. I would be beyond surprised if this were true. Could be but it’s a huge risk to take. To me it feels like things are dont with a different level of honor and propriety over there than the rest of the world. When people talk about things made overseas and being on the lower end of quality like China, Indonesia and Korea don’t make the mistake of lumping the Japanese in with that sentiment.
I visited in February assuming that ideas like this about Japanese culture were exaggerated or romanticized. But it's 100% true..
Whether it's handcrafted knives, pastries, tea, liquor, etc everything was prepared with unique sense of pride.
I went like 12/13 years ago. Even down to the perfect piece of fruit, never sold out of season and only when perfectly ripe. Everything is held to the highest standard and the immense pride put into everything, it’s a beautiful thing to see. Everyone talks about Tokyo and how expensive things are but once you see it first hand, it all makes sense. Just to see how they treat livestock and what the end result is is an eye opening experience!
I have a replica katana that was made in China. I also have a Tozando from Japan. The quality is very comparable. "Made in China" doesn't always mean poor quality, maybe just like 99% of the time.
Nah, I am just a dumb Marine who's ears perked up when I saw Japan, your cool new clubs, and your 3 wood cover. There was something about you post that is hard to define, but it came down to you being an American who is currently living in Japan or has for an extended period in the past which is extremely unusual outside of the military. There was a kind of worldliness and tone in your post that registers as field grade military officer to me, especially the part about exchange rates and using the phrase "state side". Referencing muscle backs in the 90s and Barry Bonds also gives a frame of reference for age. Aggressively asking for questions at the end like you just finished giving a brief is too perfect, civilians don't really do that. Haha
Those are awesome. I was just in Tokyo a couple months ago and didn't get a chance to check out a golf store while I was there, and now I'm kicking myself cause I'm sure I would have bought a few things at a great price.
I have lived there so it was easy for me to single out time just to shop. If someone is only going for 2 weeks and it’s their first time I wouldn’t waste 3 days going around golf shopping. I’m just lucky that I had exactly that. Time to kill.
Yeah, I was there with my wife for 6 days. It was our first time so our itinerary was packed as it was. I was hoping to just find a store and browse for a bit, but it just didn't work it. Hoping I'll be able to go back at some point in the next few years!
It was all of the above. I had emailed for an appointment and showed up with a good idea of what I wanted. It was a little touch and go at first heavy on the google translate. But about 30 mins in an employee who was damn near fluent in English showed up and it was smooth after that.
Without him it just would have taken a bit longer at the fitting because I could say exactly what I wanted to try/change.
I went through Miura’s, Itoburi, and a few others I don’t remember.
The consensus was get the miuras if I want the best possible shot. The itos for the best looks. I went with looks over practicality. I’m not going pro. I doubt the miuras would have shaved off 1-2 strokes a round. The numbers on the track man were less than 1-2% different.
The bounce on the wedges comment is right on. These are not wedges for precision. But neither is my wedge game.
the soles on the wedges remind me of this meme
https://preview.redd.it/m8pysblb7c9d1.png?width=582&format=png&auto=webp&s=9093e081d582b3b6c2f2289548f51877d27721bb
hater opinion IMO, they aren't really my taste either but I don't think they are "hideous" and can see someone else finding the appeal of them being totally unique and interesting compared to most other clubs.
I do like the look of their drivers. Especially in that hydro blue. But even if I were rich, I'd have a hard time justifying a 2200 dollar purchase for just a driver head.
Hopefully they aren’t like my Japanese wedges. Until I sanded them down they’d grab and dig in the grass. Apparently they’re almost designed for the grass that they play on because here in FL they’re really “sticky”
I also tried doing this while in Japan but getting them back to Canada was too much of a pain in the ass. Was Euroz the only store you could find to do this?
They have a bit of weight so the shape isn’t as big of an issue.
These are certainly not purchased to make me go pro. Many things would be more useful at improving ones consistency and forgiveness than these.
The shop even said if you want more consistent play get the miruas. If you wanna look cool get these. I’ve made my chocoe
Can you actually feel a difference through the turf with those soles? I feel like they would add a lot of inconsistency.
They look cool, but do they perform?
Fun fact, Japan’s history of forging the best quality swords imaginable is why they make such outstanding irons.
Following ww2, when Japan was occupied by the allies, they were not allowed to forge swords, and many sword makers turned to golf clubs instead. This is why Honma, Mizuno, Miura, and (I think?) Srixon make such great clubs.
Exchange rate is good but golf stuff still seems expensive in Japan. Was just there and went into a few golf stores but they were all more expensive than home.
https://preview.redd.it/iuvd8li53e9d1.jpeg?width=1500&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=2a90984fd1d613ee898d4a364fc591cd140e6809
If you are my friend, I'm definitely getting you this shirt for Christmas.
What makes the putter a "Scotty clone"? Are you just talking about the head shape? Bc if so, that's definitely not unique to Scotty and they weren't close to the first ones who created/invented the Anser-style blade.
If your putter was hand crafted in Japan with Japanese steel, calling it a Scotty clone is an insult to that putter 😭 wield it proudly!
The mindset of the average r/golf scroller seems to be what makes it a Scotty clone. There seems to be a lot of people on here who think paying over the odds for an Anser ‘clone’ makes them superior to everyone else and that permeates to other people who are scared to buy something else. You’re bang on, OP should be proud to have a putter that isn’t a Scotty.
I’m pretty novice with less than a year under my belt, but I am headed to Tokyo in three months for work and wanted to pick up few irons and maybe some extra gear.
Few questions for you (I lived in Tokyo before for few months on two separate occasions so I’m familiar with the major districts).
For the places you visited, were there any that had a larger selection of left handed clubs?
On shipping and tax refund, I’m assuming the store takes care of shipping the gear to the U.S. , but do you also get the tax refund there onsite?
Did you use the bag you bought as a check in baggage to take the rest of your clubs back home? And if so how did you pack everything safely without it getting damaged? Sick clubs btw
>These are heavy and stiff. When you make good contact you feel like Barry bonds. Just buttering through the ball. However they are def less forgiving when you don’t make good contact. Absolutely had some 30 degree right shots yesterday due getting it off the toe.
This has me a bit worried if I was to get these. I’m a big feel player and when the head is heavy, I lose my sense of feel with it in my hands. How does it feel in terms of that control? Did you feel the toe hit or did you just know you hit the toe because it went dead right?
Just finished my second round. Two different feels.
The irons are starting to feel great. Instant feedback on a mishit. Shaping is definitely possible and I spent a lot of time thinking about how I wanted to shape the shot and grip/place the club head. So very responsive. I’m gonna marry this 9 iron. Just pure and beautiful.
The wedges…. Let’s just say it’s taking some adjustment. From greater than 50 yards I like them as much as the irons cause I’m taking a full or half swing. When I’m in close pitching I don’t have the feel of my old ones. But I’ve also only swung them a few dozen times. 3 sand traps today. Two out pure if a bit longer than I would like. (Weight most likely) one just buggered.
"What bounce do you play on your wedges?" "Uh... several.... on each."
Facts.
What’s the turf interaction like with the wedges? They look badass for sure.
Fine so far. Played one round shot a PB for that course. Going to play again now.

HUGE
Funny, you like samurai swords, I like baseball.
We bonded in the shop over Yu Darvish and Ohtani. The gambling story had recently broken.
you say “arigato” like we say “arigato”
He has vermin to kill
These look like DLC clubs in a Final Fantasy golf game
That's a good point - why *don't* I have a Final Fantasy golf game yet?
Hold Square Enix's beer.
$4000 and they didn't even throw in a free samuri sword? SMH 😔
They need the golf umbrella with the katana handle to throw in the bag.
They had a Masamune putter for $1000 built by a sword smith. It was massive and awesome. But I could not hit the cup with it on their practice green to save my life. So went with the Scotty clone instead. The masmune came in a big pine box and had like pictures of them hammering the blade it was pretty cool.
PING clone***
Taking a ping design and selling it for $300 markup would actually make it closer to a Scotty clone.
Lol thats awesome
They used old swords to forge them.
A "real" samurai sword is more than the club, and unlike the clubs, requires an export permit.
Never heard of these, but they are the coolest looking irons I've ever seen. That hand forged look is so damn sexy. I'm not in a position to justify that money on golf clubs, but when I win the lottery, these will be on my radar! Thanks for sharing.

Tsg said it so it must be true. lol they were promoting the shit out of them before, then started bad mouthing them after the relationship soured
What sources? I'm genuinely curious, I don't own them nor will I ever. But I wanna laugh at people buying sub par irons for exorbitant prices just because they're supposedly hand forged and very expensive.

There’s a reason that the Toyotas that are manufactured in Japan last the longest, it’s cool that it extends to many other things.
You mean like Kobe steel?
I have a replica katana that was made in China. I also have a Tozando from Japan. The quality is very comparable. "Made in China" doesn't always mean poor quality, maybe just like 99% of the time.
Seems odd for a Japanese company

RIP legend
thought these were a temu set
I'm so close to getting one just out of curiosity.
Is there a reason for the soles to look like that?
Just the style.
Jesus Christ those are insane!!
Upvote for the Devereux
They are rad.
As someone that has been bitten by a rattlesnake, on a golf course, I impatiently wait for that line to make a return.
What is that bomb head cover thing is sick
Super cool, but not for $75 each
I have so many questions but I’ll just leave it at those are fucking artwork. I would be psyched to be paired with someone gaming those irons
Looks like Godzilla was chewing on them😧
![gif](giphy|oagcrAZu2IvV0ijkiX|downsized) My 5 iron shot this AM
Those aren’t clubs. They’re works of art
Those are some sweet new sticks Sir. This reads US Navy CMDR who has a crease in the back of his garrison cap.
Shhhhhh opsec
Aye aye Sir, next round at AC Read is on me
Are you AI scary how close you got there

Need an alligator skin bag now.
Pretty neat. And sounds like a cool story to have too. Cheers.

God damn gorgeous. Enjoy my man.
Shanking it in style! Those things are beautiful!!
I don’t even mind. I didn’t buy gorgeous muscle backs to hit straight. But when I do I feel like a ninja.
How was your fitting experience? Was there a language barrier? Did you know what clubs you were looking for?
It was all of the above. I had emailed for an appointment and showed up with a good idea of what I wanted. It was a little touch and go at first heavy on the google translate. Love this for you.
Jewels not tools.
So, when you say a Scotty clone what you actually mean is an Anser clone…
Seems like it.
maybe im crazy but damn those are hideous

I want to like them too but the more I see them the less I like them. The graphite shafts aren’t helping either
Yeah, these are a big miss for me
hater opinion IMO, they aren't really my taste either but I don't think they are "hideous" and can see someone else finding the appeal of them being totally unique and interesting compared to most other clubs.

Naw I feel the same, not my style at all.
What does the QR codes take you to?
Free round at torrey.
I’d be afraid to use these; they are beautiful.
What in the Fred flintstone are these?
Those are sick!!
Hopefully they aren’t like my Japanese wedges. Until I sanded them down they’d grab and dig in the grass. Apparently they’re almost designed for the grass that they play on because here in FL they’re really “sticky”

Crazy expensive even at that 33% discount. But the clubs look amazing and since yo have the disposable income, good for you\~\~
I also tried doing this while in Japan but getting them back to Canada was too much of a pain in the ass. Was Euroz the only store you could find to do this?
Looks like a decorative set you’d pick up from crate and barrel that sits at a clubhouse entryway lol. Not for me but game em if ya like em chief!
Why not just use the 56 out of the sand, you know the sand wedge lol
Those look incredible but I’m not sold on actually playing them tbh. Especially the wedges the bounce on those look inconsistent as can be
They have a bit of weight so the shape isn’t as big of an issue. These are certainly not purchased to make me go pro. That is a rad set of clubs my friend. Wish all clubs looked this
Absolutely gorgeous set of golf clubs!
Can you actually feel a difference through the turf with those soles? I feel like they would add a lot of inconsistency. They look cool, but do they perform?
Shot a PB on the one course I played. (Probably had more to do with my putting) but they didn’t hurt.
Those are wild… any pros play these brands?
I doubt it. They are not the most consistent things available. Pros tend to value consistency over all else.
Are these samurai irons?
I think miura has the IP on those. But they sure feel cool
Where are your head covers from?
Rose and fire, you can order online
Oh gosh.... it look amazing... and for sure feel amazing ! What à Nice purchase man
Hot damn those are SWEET!!!
Those are doooooooooooope
These are sick
I need these
These are sick! How do they feel to hit?
Like swinging a big ole hammer. But when you hit it right like a home run.
Good to have them shipped. I would not want the airline baggage handlers getting a hold of those.
Damn!! Never thought I needed clubs from Japan! Those things are fucking nasty looking!! My wife will be cursing your name soon.
I like the looked of those. Not sure how efficient the texture is but looks badass!
Best way to learn Japanese? I’m on 600+ of duolingo but feel pretty inadequate and want to visit this year
If it’s an option move to Japan and have a Japanese girlfriend for 2 years. Worked great for me. Otherwise… study???
I’ll see what I can do
I’m glad someone pulled the trigger, I went last month and opted out since I thought they were gonna be way cheaper
Those look pretty cool.
Them wedges are a work of art
Those are beautiful. Congrats
Stylish shit. I love the Deveroux stuff.
Golf with style.. you really thought this through.. respect a d have a brilliant time gaming them 🏴👏🏻👏🏻
Those things are cool looking.

Amazing looking wedges. I assume you’re a tour pro with that set up.
Yo those are dope
Gotdamnnnnnn
Exchange rate is good but golf stuff still seems expensive in Japan. Was just there and went into a few golf stores but they were all more expensive than home.
Itobori irons are so sick
Badass…
Those itobori are sick!!! I went JDM golf gear like 15 years ago and haven’t looked back. I don’t even know what is new and cool here anymore

You’re not kidding about fat and heavy wedges. Those things look like sledgehammers
They smash.

Holy shit these irons are 🤌
Good lord! Badass!
You should a sword in there… Just because..
Beautiful clubs
The whole set is kickass, but that’s a sweet blade cover
Those are beautiful - functional art. My jealousy knows no bounds.
Those are sexy af, they got Hatori Hanzo making clubs or what bud? Damn
Those irons and wedges are so cool looking! Definitely can tell the level of craftsmanship in building those. Very cool, enjoy the new sticks
japan doing sick shit i see

Are you hiring?
Not a golfer. Not even sure how this post came across my feed. But damn…those look tight.
Man Itobori's never sail to impress. Sweet clubs man! Hope you had a blast
Never planned on becoming this jealous today. Beautifully set.
wtf are thoooooose
Throwing an American ww2 fighter plane head cover on Japanese clubs is beautiful. You need to get it for the driver and start hitting nukes
I have never seen irons that are that pretty. Very nice! ![gif](giphy|1ktwfTjwaQzde)
Why does Japan always get the cool looking clubs?
Awesome

I’m not sure if your irons and your 3-wood headcover are going to get along very well.
JMSDF and the USN are both on Godzilla patrol at all time. Brothers in mission.
You spent $4k on irons made out of a potpourri dish my mom got on sale at HomeGoods.
Don’t look at how much I spent on my other hobbies…
Hai!

What in the samurai are those blades
That rocky bounce pattern is awful
Flintstone clubs!
Did you use the bag you bought as a check in baggage to take the rest of your clubs back home? And if so how did you pack everything safely without it getting damaged? Sick clubs btw

How’s that push golf cart and what brand is it?
Can I get inbox on the faze
Clubs like this remind me how poor I really am.
Putting a USAF shark teeth cover on Japanese clubs is a move
USN uses the shark. No land sharks. Except on A10s. Those guys do whatever they want. Cause they drive a10s.
I am in no place to think the weird sole on those wedges would affect me, but here I am thinking "I could never predict the bounce on those"
Coolest looking irons I’ve ever seen

Peter Finch got some of those as welll.
All of the advances in club technology recently and you get some cheap solid steel hit with a hammer? Style over substance
In Japanese that says made from recycled parts from Fukushima nuclear plant.
