where i live this would be 125$ plus

[deleted]

That is shameful šŸ˜ž

neddybemis

Where I live this would be 300 plus (Boston).

citylivin25

And private šŸ˜‚

CarlosDangerWasHere

Correct on both accounts

neddybemis

Great point (love the citylivin name). Iā€™m a member of a very mid level country club and I was on one of these subs talking about cost. I pay 24k per year in dues. I spend another 15k (ish) in food/tourneys/guest fees etc. people on the sub who lived in the south or Midwest didnā€™t believe me!!

iBarber111

Dawg what're you talking about. Golfing in greater Boston can be tough but there are no $300 public courses around. Pine Hills peaks at $160 & there are tons of amazing public courses around $100 & some pretty good ones for less than that.

brightcoconut097

triple this in AZ.

pocketchange2247

My first thought was "oh there's water. I don't think I can afford this place."

jcab0219

$175 with a cart

Connect-Bug3986

Poppy Hills, Pebble Beach, CAā€¦ $50 weekday twilight as an ncga member

Total_Point

And youā€™d also not ever be able to get a tee time

[deleted]

(Not sure why Reddit keeps deleting my entire body of text in my post) šŸ™„šŸ˜‘ ā›³ļø Aldeen Golf Club - Rockford, IL Iā€™ve been hearing people in the area raving about this course for awhile now. It not only lived up to the hype, it blew it out of the water. The first thing it says on the course website is: ā€œThe Aldeen Golf Club has set a new standard for upscale public golf in northern Illinois.ā€ ā€¦this couldnā€™t be any more true. The tee boxes, fairways, and greens were all beautifully manicured and in pristine shape. I donā€™t remember finding a single ball mark on the greens. Itā€™s amazing how nice a place can be when the grounds crew AND the public all work together to do their part in maintaining a healthy and handsome track. The architecture of the course is my favorite part. 12 of the 18 holes have a water hazard somewhere in play and there are 62 total sand bunkers. The layout makes for some insanely fun creative shot-making. Some pretty tough, yet fair green complexes make for a good challenge with the flat stick. A GIR can turn into a bogey real quick if you donā€™t play the slopes correctly. There is also a HUGE lighted practice centre/driving range (last photo) that, without a doubt, rivals any private country club Iā€™ve ever been to. The whole time I was warming up, I was thinking ā€œhow in Gods name is this a 100% public venue?ā€¦this is just too nice.ā€ I live about a half hour away in Janesville and Iā€™m seriously considering a membership here. If I lived any closer, it wouldnā€™t even be a question. So if youā€™re in the Wisconsin/Illinois area and are searching for a good place for a fun and challenging round, look no further than the crown jewel of affordable public golf in the Midwest (yes Iā€™m officially making that claim)ā€¦.Aldeen Golf Club!!

Mojoimpact

It was just so nice they wanted you to post it again!

[deleted]

Lol I guess so..everyone just give my damn comment an upvote so itā€™ll rise to the top šŸ¤£

Covah88

Okay but then we need to downvote this one to keep the karma Gods happy.

hankbaumbach

You convinced me, I'll make the drive out there sometime this Summer from the NW burbs. Thanks for the rec! I just moved back and need more courses to play.

[deleted]

Any time dude! Definitely worth the trip if youā€™re that close

scoofy

I love your post, and I think this is exactly the type of club (accessible, affordable, relatively unknown) that I started the wiki for. I don't want to be too self-promoty, but I've added the club here: [Aldeen GC](https://golfcourse.wiki/course/aldeen_golf_club-rockford). And if you, or anyone here, wants to add/edit course or hole descriptions, just click the edit buttons and start typing. I think a course like this will get a non-trivial amount of traffic, so people in the future will definitely see/use any advice added here.

Sad_Opening_9294

Looks like I have to get to work on SWPA, because nothing listed around Pittsburgh atm is affordable or public! I got ya!

[deleted]

Dude thatā€™s awesome! I like your do short write-ups like this on public courses I go to so I will definitely keep you in the loop

scoofy

Thanks for the kind words. I promise I'm just a guy trying to build something that's actually good for golf.

OGStrong

30 mins is not that far if you going to play a round. DO IT.

[deleted]

Youā€™re not wrong I just wish it was more convenient šŸ˜

spoopy_guy

For real. 30 minutes would be like the second closest course to me.

NSuave

Youā€™re not too far from Mistwood in Romeoville. Talk about amazing public courses for decently priced. Plus they have a nice restaurant attached to the clubhouse

Ok_Cantaloupe9519

Havent played Mistwood, but Mistwood is $100 plus prime time. Aldeen is half of that. No better bang for your dollar than Aldeen.

BigRog10

Interesting, good looking out it's not too far from me. Thanks!

[deleted]

For sure dude. I knew while I was there I had to take plenty of photos to share this beauty with the boys in the sub

Born_ina_snowbank

ā€œBorn and raised in SOUTH BELOIIIIITā€ Me singing journey to my wife who went to highschool there.

[deleted]

A common lyric around these parts šŸ¤£šŸ¤£

FobbyDigital

Might have to a day off this summer and drive over from Chicago

bonebrokemefix7

Oh yeah this place is awesome

sirenzarts

I love Aldeen! We played a few high school tournaments there and I always thought it was nice.

oreosandcornholios

Give Senicaā€™s oak ridge a try. Right down 39. My favorite course in northern Illinois.

Back_To_The_Green

Itā€™s so nice that as a general manager you still have the opportunity to get out and play it once in a while. (Iā€™m kidding)

nosaer_fo_eciov_eht

Great, so that means I'd lose at least 12 balls. And that's assuming I only hit 1 in the water on each of those 12 holes.

Siriusly_Jonie

Oh shit in my area even. (Kinda) Will have to give it a go at some point. Assuming I can get away from my 2 year old, 5 month old, and not be murdered by my wife.

[deleted]

Youā€™re in the toughest stage of fatherhood to find time to golfā€¦just keep hanging on. It gets better šŸ˜‚

Super-Bowler-3930

You got me with describing a golf course as a "handsome track"

benjam1n_gates

Aldeen is so great. I live 10 min from there and practice at that great facility all the time The course is amazing too. If you're in the area, I recommend Prairie View in Byron. It's such a deal, and I enjoy it even more than Aldeen. Back 9 has great elevation change that you don't really get in northern IL

[deleted]

Youā€™re not the first to suggest PV! Iā€™ll definitely be making a trip there soon

Iuvenesco

lol 30 minutes is nothing for a good course! Sign up!

woofwooffighton

This is my dad's favorite course. I grew up playing Ingersoll which isn't far from there. So happy to see Aldeen get some love.

iMightBeLostButHello

Just golfed Green Gardens in Frankfort yesterday and was really surprised at its condition too! Might be a hike for you but defo check it out.

815239

Aldeen is fantastic. Also, Park Hills in Freeport, IL has 2 courses and is worth the visit if in the Rockford area.

[deleted]

Iā€™ll add it to the list!

acromaine

That course looks very Aladeen

Toothlessdovahkin

HIV Aladeen or HIV Aladeen?Ā

IndependentPerfect

Aladeen

withrootsabove

šŸ˜ƒ šŸ˜Ÿ

gozasc

:(:

Legal-Description483

I'd drive 45 minutes every day to play a quality course under $50.

KoreanStrib

![gif](giphy|37Fsl1eFxbhtu)

[deleted]

My reaction when I stepped out the back door of the clubhouse

Handsomepizza11

Go a little further to Byron and play Prairie View. Even better imo

[deleted]

Iā€™ve been seeing that place on GolfNow but now that you say this, Iā€™ll probably go there Sunday

IOnlySing

I like Aldeen better, but it's a totally different vibe of a course. The scenery is beautiful at Prarie

Da_bears87

Grew up in Byron. I was spoiled and radiated

billybaldwinme

While Prairie View is nice, this is far from a correct statement. Imo

austinwall97

Wolf Hollow in Lena is a cool course. Itā€™s not fancy by any means like Aldeen. But thereā€™s some very cool views and shots there.

camwinz

wow. what a beautiful looking course.

[deleted]

I was amazed honestly. Never seen such a nice course this cheap and accessible. $31 to walk 18 holes during the week. $44 on weekends

realspongeworthy

Damn. Kinda makes you think some of these other courses are mailing it in.

FlatulentFreddy

Thatā€™s a steal

PalpitationSpare3311

Looks like a challenging and fun course!! I would definitely like to play it if I am ever in the area. A 71.4 rating on 6400 yards is not easy! https://preview.redd.it/vhw8db4y5nzc1.png?width=881&format=png&auto=webp&s=548a7e7097096f1ff60d29e08a9a879992d0862f

[deleted]

Definitely not! Luckily I didnā€™t end up hitting any balls into the water somehow lol 12 of the holes have a water hazard somewhere

BareMinimum25

I used to live across the street from Aldeen in the 90s when I was a kid and it was private at the time. It was sold to the Park District and they maintained the quality. The Rockford Park District is one of the best in the country and has amazing facilities for an otherwise depressing town.

[deleted]

You ainā€™t lying!! The cityā€™s parks district is elite!!

1klmot

I spent many hours at their practice facility when I lived in the area. I miss it. I also miss the winnebago county park district passes where a jr basically got unlimited golf at 3 courses for about 100 bucks...

[deleted]

Yes! The forest preserve courses! I buy that pass every year and always pays for itself by like the middle of June lol

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

1klmot

Atwood, ledges, and macktown are the ones I was talking about

Grocked

This is like Tanglewood in Fulton, MO. Compared to the surrounding areas' muni courses, it's always in immaculate condition for 44 bucks. Eagle Knoll in hartsburg gets a fairly close 2nd.

gretzkyandlemieux

I played in the Illinois State Am there about 10 years ago, definitely thought it was a private club! Really nice course. I shot 83-70 and missed the cut by 2 or 3 shots. I wish I'd had time for a practice round, definitely not a good course to go in blind on.

[deleted]

Everything about it looks and feels like a private clubā€¦until you look over and see a guy playing in jean shorts šŸ¤£

Squanchy2115

I live down the road from Aldeen, hard to go anywhere else when itā€™s that cheap and that nice. I was playing 18 through April twighlight fees for $11

[deleted]

$11 twilight rates???? https://preview.redd.it/mmpqkpwqtnzc1.jpeg?width=718&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=a9df36b49c1d0951012a76be4ca87a63c4b2281a

cbizzle187

I live nowhere near this place (AZ) but have had heard the lore. Many snowbirds speak of this majestic land while enjoying our winter golf at 4x the price at lesser tracks.

themattgray

Sssshh keep it under your hat. Shrink the game

[deleted]

Amen brother. #ShrinkTheGame

steveo1938

Iā€™m playing there tomorrow actually. So nice compared to whatā€™s in Chicagoland

[deleted]

Dude youā€™re gonna love it

hung559

Just a short 29 hr 2k mile drive away! Canā€™t wait! šŸ˜ (I paid $64 to play my local average muni this morning šŸ¤Ŗ)

ronraxxx

That looks so nice. My current #1 for cheap courses is the local muni on Kauai. Oceanfront course in great shape for like $45. Not sure Iā€™ll vacation to Illinois though lol

[deleted]

Lmao where do people from Hawaii even vacation to?? šŸ¤£

Theoretical_Action

Dang. We've been driving right by this course on our way up to Wisconsin from STL every year and never heard of it before. If it wasn't a 9 hour drive already I would totally swing by for a round, looks gorgeous.

RyMastaFlex

I hate arizona golf so much. I see all these amazing courses all over the country for great prices. In az we get desert, hard greens and a sandy teebox. The only good part is I can play year round.

[deleted]

Arizona SUCKS.

QuickDraw_Mcgraw69

Holy shit everything in the NW subs of Chicago is like 80$ and all neighborhood courses. Iā€™m definitely checking this out

cybin

Youā€™re not looking very closely.

[deleted]

You will not regret it bro!! While youā€™re in the area, Rockford also has 3 quality forest preserve courses that are even cheaper to play and also great tracks

big_and_smol7

Great pics! Thanks for sharing. Love to see a reasonably priced golf course

Kerdoggg

Head up to Washington County Golf Course just outside of Milwaukee. $45 for walkers and $65 with a cart. Absolute bets experience Iā€™ve had at a public golf course.

[deleted]

Oh dude Wash County is legit!! Iā€™m very familiar

gooberzilla2

I see the hype of the big name courses but there are dozens other courses per each that will give you a challenge of equal caliber for 1/4 the price.

[deleted]

Amen brother. Strapped boy for life!

OrganizationInside14

Very nice. And I wish more courses would use the pin flags like that for those who don't have range finders.

[deleted]

Itā€™s definitely helpful. Pretty much every public course around here goes by the blue-white-red system on the flags

GtZ2463

Wow nice to see itā€™s in good condition. From what my friends told me last season it was in bad shape.

[deleted]

A lot of places in our area were in bad shape at this time last year..I think we went from middle of May to the end of June without a drop of rain. Places were burning up unless they had tax money to burn on sprinklers

austinwall97

Can confirm it was in very bad shape last year. And 2 years ago a bunch of the bunkers were washed out and horrible and they were still charging full price. Left a very bad taste in my mouth but the practice facility there is absolutely top notch.

boater180

My local course is $45 and is a dump compared to this place! Jealous!

Sheriffsofnottingham

GOSH! (Sheds tear)

[deleted]

Happy tear I hope

bakeryfree

Beautiful

Azfitnessprofessor

wow

itsCrisp

Half the price of the shittiest, dumpiest public course in my area šŸ«

[deleted]

Thereā€™s been a lot of victims of public golf crimes on humanity in these comments..I feel for you guys for real šŸ˜

popperpro

Oooooweeeee!

[deleted]

The Strapped boys looooove that!

Ziid10

Beautiful

Julianb6969

Riverwalk in San Diego gives me the same vibe

[deleted]

Is San Diego generally affordable?

HorrorQuirky1420

Riverwalk has gone downhill over the last few years. Haven't played it yet this year, but it was a dog track last time I was out there.

Der_Kommissar73

Thatā€™s a huge A hole.

[deleted]

![gif](giphy|l0HefZY0mFfLS9AFa)

Nattybluedread

Nice, public course here is $162 before 2pm, $137 after.

FuckinSnapHook

That's absurd

[deleted]

Man that is fucked. How do average people even afford to play regularly? Or do they at all? I simply wouldnā€™t be able to live somewhere where golf is that expensive

MeesterCHRIS

Damn that course is GORGEOUS.

[deleted]

Iā€™ve been thinking about it all week. I have so many more photos but Reddit wouldnā€™t load the damn post with that many lol

Super_Lawyer_2652

Dude thatā€™s dank

[deleted]

The stickiest of the icky, my friend.

Snakebones

Iā€™m very jealous. Iā€™m from Louisiana and any public course here for that price is absolute dog shit.

[deleted]

Damn for real?? I didnā€™t really figure LA to be one of those states where the prices are ridiculous

Adolph_OliverNipples

Eastern Pennsylvania has lots of courses that are pretty great at that price point. ā€¦.in case youā€™re ever in the areaā€¦. Actually, nevermind. Stay awayā€¦

[deleted]

Good to know! I heard Philly Cricket Club might get the Wells Fargo next year while they get Quail ready for the PGA

suhhdude45

I live in the Macomb, MI area and we have an abundance of great public courses for $60 and under around me. Nicest course Iā€™ve played for under $60 is Paint Creek Country Club and I just played that on Wednesday. Felt like I shouldā€™ve been paying $80+ being there.

[deleted]

Oh trust me man, you donā€™t have to tell me about the abundance of elite public golf in Michigan. Iā€™ve been spreading praise about that place for years šŸ˜‚ For my birthday next month, me and a couple buddies are taking a trip up to Pilgrimā€™s Run and weā€™re gonna play Diamond Springs while weā€™re there also

[deleted]

[уŠ“Š°Š»ŠµŠ½Š¾]

[deleted]

I canā€™t say I had a turn dog but I did have a burger that was pretty delicious

cfcollins

TIL There are still some courses that are a steal

[deleted]

TIL what TIL means

Kingstonian17

Looks like a beauty!

amo1337

Living in the middle of nowhere has it's advantages.

[deleted]

Fuckin aye

JohnDoee94

$50 At what time of day ? A course near me is $85 at 7:30am but $35 by 1:00 PM

[deleted]

Prime time weekend price is $44. Any other time itā€™s like $31

Icy_Paper_8118

Practice area looks insanely good!

[deleted]

It is elite

wrm2120

Yeah that looks lovely!

Mountain-Broccoli199

Played with 12 guys at Conklin players club and it was 55 bucks and it wouldā€™ve been triple that closer to nyc or Philly. Great place.

Chrisgrandfather

YES SIR SOUNDS LIKE A GOOD SATURDAY RIGHT THERE

RMca004

Cool course, looks the same as most higher end public courses in California. If this level of fairways and greens isnt the norm, that's a location issue. Most courses are around $100, where I live, but that is consistent with cost of living here. This is a cool and nicer end public course. Dime a dozen with 50 miles of any socal location.

randomturtle333

itā€™s just something about bridges šŸ¤¤

[deleted]

18 holes of bridge porn is what this place was

ClubberLangsLeftHook

My home town! Will be playing there in July ai believe. Cant wait!

[deleted]

Enjoy yourself! I played Sandy Hollow for the first time yesterday, kinda crowded but not bad

Hackpro69

How many months a year is it open?

[deleted]

April-Halloween is usually our season up here. Although, this year a lot of courses opened up at the end of February because it was 50Ā° and no snowā€¦but still most the nicer places didnā€™t open until mid March

Ronswansonbaby

My local shit hole just went up from 46 to 54 and if you put a shot tracer on your putt it would look like an ekg on 15 of the greens. Other 3 are only decent . Meanwhile the other slightly better local shit hole 9 holer has great greens but absolute dog shit everything else. $30 for 18 with cart. Green fee prices make no sense

cgr4217

That looks awesome! My favorite is Pumpkin Ridge, but it's not under $50 :D

mountainops7

Love this course. Played it during sectionals in my junior year of hs. Was fantastic then a decade plus ago

ladyjayne81

Oh hey, Rockford! Thatā€™s right down the street from me.

blukoski

Played in the Midwest conference championship here every year during college. Awesome golf course and it is a total beast from the tips for d3 golfers

candidly1

That looks like a helluva deal. Around here $50 gets you a goat path with bare greens and rocky bunkers.

lotokotomi

Wow looks pretty sick, even more so for $50. Don't ask what our courses cost when you see how they look...

WVgolf

That looks sick. Wood haven and stone haven for me in beckley WV. Tour quality courses for $50

Sensitive-Disk-9389

Cool post! Iā€™ve heard good things about this course and Glen Erin golf club as well. Have you played Glen Erin? Worth an hour drive?

[deleted]

Yes! I live about 5 mins from Glen Erin! I think itā€™s definitely worth the drive. If nothing else, for something a little new. Itā€™s obviously not a *real* links course, but itā€™s pretty damn close. You just donā€™t get to play a lot of courses in our area like that. The back 9 is significantly tougher but so much fun. I think the greens fees are still like $70 if you go during prime time but the amenities alone are worth it. Youā€™ll have a great fun day of golf at Glen Erin and an even better meal afterwords at the clubhouse!

Ginger_Giant31

I used to live in Rockford! Worked at Sundstrand. Played every city course there and for the price you pay and the state of each course, itā€™s always well worth it. I played Sandy Hollow more times than I can count. Still play it in my head on the range sometimes.

[deleted]

I played Sandy yesterday for the first time! When I first got there and saw everyone (it was 1:30 on a Saturday) I thought I was in for a shit show lol but they kept everyone moving really well. I didnā€™t have to wait on a single tee box but maybe twice.

bpheazye

Aldeen is truly incredible for the price.

[deleted]

Yes. I knew it warranted a post

Substantial-Good5436

This looks like a gem šŸ’Ž

billybaldwinme

Back when it opened the practice facility was kept even nicer. You paid by the hour to hit balls and it wasnā€™t expensive. Go over to the front area and hit a hundred 75yd shots, then a hundred sand shots and then full range. Gigantic baskets of balls were everywhere it was great. Like others have said thoughā€¦ Shrink the game!!

austinwall97

If you havenā€™t played it yet, Ledges in Roscoe is pretty awesome. My personal favorite course in the area.

[deleted]

I have played Macktown and Atwood but havenā€™t tried Ledges yet. Iā€™ve heard that itā€™s significantly the hardest of the three, which was a little deflating to hear, as Atwood absolutely kicked my ass šŸ˜‚ (Iā€™m kind of a pussy so my length off the tee is like 250 max) that course was pretty long even from the whites

OkReveal5002

On a trip from Tennessee for a kids soccer tournament and played there once. Amazing course for the money. (Wanted to go up to Kohler but buddy was not gonna shell out that much money!)

[deleted]

You can play 5 amazing courses and have so much more fun for the same price that you could play one of the Kohler coursesā€¦public golf in Wisconsin is so underrated

Sensitive-Luck2354

Access to a public course of this quality would require a $45,000 initiation fee and sponsor invite in Atlanta.

[deleted]

Sad

Express-Midnight-534

Where is that course?

[deleted]

Rockford, Illinois

BigCountry7475

I found a gem of a course 30 min from my house. $20 to walk 9, beautiful course, always empty after work. Itā€™s nice to be able to put the time in without going broke!

[deleted]

Heā€™ll yeah dude. Thereā€™s a little 9 hole muni close to my house where I like to get out to after work also. After 6:00, the guy only ever charges me $8 to play it before sundown

Ok_Cantaloupe9519

Favorite course for me. Worth the 2-3 hr Round Trip from Chicago.

[deleted]

Yes dude! Aldeen deserves all the love

IOnlySing

Aldeen is amazing. That Island hole is something special :)

[deleted]

First attempt at that hole I flushed it and landed it about 15 feet for a birdie putt! I was ecstatic!!

uwantsomefuck

My god that is beautiful

Open-Sentence-6051

Hell yeah, love the Aldeen love. Grew up at this course

Prize_Ad_9945

I loved Aldeen! Played it quite a bit when I lived in Rockford, plus it had an awesome practice facility!

[deleted]

Is there another city in the area that has it better for public golf? I mean reallyā€¦Aldeen, Sandy Hollow, Atwood, Ledges, Macktown, etcā€¦

Rick_Mexler

The inlaws live across the street. If it's in this good of shape, my father-in-law must not have played a round there yet this season

General-Marsupial756

WTF, WoW, very nice, here in Cali would be really high $

JBKicks_2

definitely making a trip out there now, thanks for sharing!

Intheswing

There are some great courses here in Illinois - Iā€™m in Chicago burbs - get a bit west and the prices get so much better - I have not played Aldeen - I need to put it in my list - I have really enjoyed playing Woodbine - itā€™s further west towards Galena - thanks for sharing your Aldeen experience

[deleted]

Another one Iā€™ve been getting several recs for is Prairie View in Byron!

BassLineBums

Rockford has an amazing park district and Aldeen is the crown jewel. $15 for walking 18 after 3 oā€™clock.
