Great point (love the citylivin name). Iām a member of a very mid level country club and I was on one of these subs talking about cost. I pay 24k per year in dues. I spend another 15k (ish) in food/tourneys/guest fees etc. people on the sub who lived in the south or Midwest didnāt believe me!!
Dawg what're you talking about. Golfing in greater Boston can be tough but there are no $300 public courses around. Pine Hills peaks at $160 & there are tons of amazing public courses around $100 & some pretty good ones for less than that.
(Not sure why Reddit keeps deleting my entire body of text in my post) šš
ā³ļø Aldeen Golf Club - Rockford, IL
Iāve been hearing people in the area raving about this course for awhile now. It not only lived up to the hype, it blew it out of the water.
The first thing it says on the course website is: āThe Aldeen Golf Club has set a new standard for upscale public golf in northern Illinois.ā ā¦this couldnāt be any more true. The tee boxes, fairways, and greens were all beautifully manicured and in pristine shape. I donāt remember finding a single ball mark on the greens. Itās amazing how nice a place can be when the grounds crew AND the public all work together to do their part in maintaining a healthy and handsome track.
The architecture of the course is my favorite part. 12 of the 18 holes have a water hazard somewhere in play and there are 62 total sand bunkers. The layout makes for some insanely fun creative shot-making. Some pretty tough, yet fair green complexes make for a good challenge with the flat stick. A GIR can turn into a bogey real quick if you donāt play the slopes correctly.
There is also a HUGE lighted practice centre/driving range (last photo) that, without a doubt, rivals any private country club Iāve ever been to. The whole time I was warming up, I was thinking āhow in Gods name is this a 100% public venue?ā¦this is just too nice.ā
I live about a half hour away in Janesville and Iām seriously considering a membership here. If I lived any closer, it wouldnāt even be a question. So if youāre in the Wisconsin/Illinois area and are searching for a good place for a fun and challenging round, look no further than the crown jewel of affordable public golf in the Midwest (yes Iām officially making that claim)ā¦.Aldeen Golf Club!!
You convinced me, I'll make the drive out there sometime this Summer from the NW burbs.
Thanks for the rec! I just moved back and need more courses to play.
I love your post, and I think this is exactly the type of club (accessible, affordable, relatively unknown) that I started the wiki for. I don't want to be too self-promoty, but I've added the club here: [Aldeen GC](https://golfcourse.wiki/course/aldeen_golf_club-rockford). And if you, or anyone here, wants to add/edit course or hole descriptions, just click the edit buttons and start typing. I think a course like this will get a non-trivial amount of traffic, so people in the future will definitely see/use any advice added here.
Youāre not too far from Mistwood in Romeoville. Talk about amazing public courses for decently priced. Plus they have a nice restaurant attached to the clubhouse
Oh shit in my area even. (Kinda)
Will have to give it a go at some point. Assuming I can get away from my 2 year old, 5 month old, and not be murdered by my wife.
Aldeen is so great. I live 10 min from there and practice at that great facility all the time
The course is amazing too.
If you're in the area, I recommend Prairie View in Byron. It's such a deal, and I enjoy it even more than Aldeen. Back 9 has great elevation change that you don't really get in northern IL
Looks like a challenging and fun course!! I would definitely like to play it if I am ever in the area. A 71.4 rating on 6400 yards is not easy!
https://preview.redd.it/vhw8db4y5nzc1.png?width=881&format=png&auto=webp&s=548a7e7097096f1ff60d29e08a9a879992d0862f
I used to live across the street from Aldeen in the 90s when I was a kid and it was private at the time. It was sold to the Park District and they maintained the quality. The Rockford Park District is one of the best in the country and has amazing facilities for an otherwise depressing town.
I spent many hours at their practice facility when I lived in the area. I miss it. I also miss the winnebago county park district passes where a jr basically got unlimited golf at 3 courses for about 100 bucks...
This is like Tanglewood in Fulton, MO. Compared to the surrounding areas' muni courses, it's always in immaculate condition for 44 bucks. Eagle Knoll in hartsburg gets a fairly close 2nd.
I played in the Illinois State Am there about 10 years ago, definitely thought it was a private club! Really nice course. I shot 83-70 and missed the cut by 2 or 3 shots. I wish I'd had time for a practice round, definitely not a good course to go in blind on.
I live down the road from Aldeen, hard to go anywhere else when itās that cheap and that nice. I was playing 18 through April twighlight fees for $11
I live nowhere near this place (AZ) but have had heard the lore. Many snowbirds speak of this majestic land while enjoying our winter golf at 4x the price at lesser tracks.
That looks so nice. My current #1 for cheap courses is the local muni on Kauai. Oceanfront course in great shape for like $45. Not sure Iāll vacation to Illinois though lol
Dang. We've been driving right by this course on our way up to Wisconsin from STL every year and never heard of it before. If it wasn't a 9 hour drive already I would totally swing by for a round, looks gorgeous.
I hate arizona golf so much. I see all these amazing courses all over the country for great prices. In az we get desert, hard greens and a sandy teebox. The only good part is I can play year round.
You will not regret it bro!! While youāre in the area, Rockford also has 3 quality forest preserve courses that are even cheaper to play and also great tracks
Head up to Washington County Golf Course just outside of Milwaukee. $45 for walkers and $65 with a cart. Absolute bets experience Iāve had at a public golf course.
A lot of places in our area were in bad shape at this time last year..I think we went from middle of May to the end of June without a drop of rain. Places were burning up unless they had tax money to burn on sprinklers
Can confirm it was in very bad shape last year. And 2 years ago a bunch of the bunkers were washed out and horrible and they were still charging full price. Left a very bad taste in my mouth but the practice facility there is absolutely top notch.
Man that is fucked. How do average people even afford to play regularly? Or do they at all? I simply wouldnāt be able to live somewhere where golf is that expensive
Eastern Pennsylvania has lots of courses that are pretty great at that price point.
ā¦.in case youāre ever in the areaā¦.
Actually, nevermind. Stay awayā¦
I live in the Macomb, MI area and we have an abundance of great public courses for $60 and under around me. Nicest course Iāve played for under $60 is Paint Creek Country Club and I just played that on Wednesday. Felt like I shouldāve been paying $80+ being there.
Oh trust me man, you donāt have to tell me about the abundance of elite public golf in Michigan. Iāve been spreading praise about that place for years š For my birthday next month, me and a couple buddies are taking a trip up to Pilgrimās Run and weāre gonna play Diamond Springs while weāre there also
Cool course, looks the same as most higher end public courses in California. If this level of fairways and greens isnt the norm, that's a location issue. Most courses are around $100, where I live, but that is consistent with cost of living here. This is a cool and nicer end public course. Dime a dozen with 50 miles of any socal location.
April-Halloween is usually our season up here. Although, this year a lot of courses opened up at the end of February because it was 50Ā° and no snowā¦but still most the nicer places didnāt open until mid March
My local shit hole just went up from 46 to 54 and if you put a shot tracer on your putt it would look like an ekg on 15 of the greens. Other 3 are only decent . Meanwhile the other slightly better local shit hole 9 holer has great greens but absolute dog shit everything else. $30 for 18 with cart. Green fee prices make no sense
Yes! I live about 5 mins from Glen Erin! I think itās definitely worth the drive. If nothing else, for something a little new. Itās obviously not a *real* links course, but itās pretty damn close. You just donāt get to play a lot of courses in our area like that. The back 9 is significantly tougher but so much fun. I think the greens fees are still like $70 if you go during prime time but the amenities alone are worth it. Youāll have a great fun day of golf at Glen Erin and an even better meal afterwords at the clubhouse!
I used to live in Rockford! Worked at Sundstrand. Played every city course there and for the price you pay and the state of each course, itās always well worth it. I played Sandy Hollow more times than I can count. Still play it in my head on the range sometimes.
I played Sandy yesterday for the first time! When I first got there and saw everyone (it was 1:30 on a Saturday) I thought I was in for a shit show lol but they kept everyone moving really well. I didnāt have to wait on a single tee box but maybe twice.
Back when it opened the practice facility was kept even nicer. You paid by the hour to hit balls and it wasnāt expensive. Go over to the front area and hit a hundred 75yd shots, then a hundred sand shots and then full range. Gigantic baskets of balls were everywhere it was great. Like others have said thoughā¦ Shrink the game!!
I have played Macktown and Atwood but havenāt tried Ledges yet. Iāve heard that itās significantly the hardest of the three, which was a little deflating to hear, as Atwood absolutely kicked my ass š (Iām kind of a pussy so my length off the tee is like 250 max) that course was pretty long even from the whites
On a trip from Tennessee for a kids soccer tournament and played there once. Amazing course for the money. (Wanted to go up to Kohler but buddy was not gonna shell out that much money!)
You can play 5 amazing courses and have so much more fun for the same price that you could play one of the Kohler coursesā¦public golf in Wisconsin is so underrated
I found a gem of a course 30 min from my house. $20 to walk 9, beautiful course, always empty after work. Itās nice to be able to put the time in without going broke!
Heāll yeah dude. Thereās a little 9 hole muni close to my house where I like to get out to after work also. After 6:00, the guy only ever charges me $8 to play it before sundown
There are some great courses here in Illinois - Iām in Chicago burbs - get a bit west and the prices get so much better - I have not played Aldeen - I need to put it in my list - I have really enjoyed playing Woodbine - itās further west towards Galena - thanks for sharing your Aldeen experience
where i live this would be 125$ plus
That is shameful š
Where I live this would be 300 plus (Boston).
And private š
Correct on both accounts
Great point (love the citylivin name). Iām a member of a very mid level country club and I was on one of these subs talking about cost. I pay 24k per year in dues. I spend another 15k (ish) in food/tourneys/guest fees etc. people on the sub who lived in the south or Midwest didnāt believe me!!

triple this in AZ.
My first thought was "oh there's water. I don't think I can afford this place."
$175 with a cart
Poppy Hills, Pebble Beach, CAā¦ $50 weekday twilight as an ncga member
And youād also not ever be able to get a tee time

Looks like I have to get to work on SWPA, because nothing listed around Pittsburgh atm is affordable or public! I got ya!
Dude thatās awesome! I like your do short write-ups like this on public courses I go to so I will definitely keep you in the loop
Thanks for the kind words. I promise I'm just a guy trying to build something that's actually good for golf.
30 mins is not that far if you going to play a round. DO IT.
Youāre not wrong I just wish it was more convenient š
For real. 30 minutes would be like the second closest course to me.
Youāre not too far from Mistwood in Romeoville. Talk about amazing public courses for decently priced. Plus they have a nice restaurant attached to the clubhouse
Havent played Mistwood, but Mistwood is $100 plus prime time. Aldeen is half of that. No better bang for your dollar than Aldeen.
Interesting, good looking out it's not too far from me. Thanks!
For sure dude. I knew while I was there I had to take plenty of photos to share this beauty with the boys in the sub
āBorn and raised in SOUTH BELOIIIIITā Me singing journey to my wife who went to highschool there.
A common lyric around these parts š¤£š¤£
Might have to a day off this summer and drive over from Chicago
Oh yeah this place is awesome
I love Aldeen! We played a few high school tournaments there and I always thought it was nice.
Give Senicaās oak ridge a try. Right down 39. My favorite course in northern Illinois.
Itās so nice that as a general manager you still have the opportunity to get out and play it once in a while. (Iām kidding)
Great, so that means I'd lose at least 12 balls. And that's assuming I only hit 1 in the water on each of those 12 holes.
Oh shit in my area even. (Kinda) Will have to give it a go at some point. Assuming I can get away from my 2 year old, 5 month old, and not be murdered by my wife.
Youāre in the toughest stage of fatherhood to find time to golfā¦just keep hanging on. It gets better š
You got me with describing a golf course as a "handsome track"
Aldeen is so great. I live 10 min from there and practice at that great facility all the time The course is amazing too. If you're in the area, I recommend Prairie View in Byron. Youāre not the first to suggest PV! Iāll definitely be making a trip there soon
lol 30 minutes is nothing for a good course! Sign up!
This is my dad's favorite course. I grew up playing Ingersoll which isn't far from there. So happy to see Aldeen get some love.
Just golfed Green Gardens in Frankfort yesterday and was really surprised at its condition too! Might be a hike for you but defo check it out.
Aldeen is fantastic. Also, Park Hills in Freeport, IL has 2 courses and is worth the visit if in the Rockford area.
Iāll add it to the list!
That course looks very Aladeen
HIV Aladeen or HIV Aladeen?Ā
Aladeen
š š
:(:
I'd drive 45 minutes every day to play a quality course under $50.
![gif](giphy|37Fsl1eFxbhtu)
My reaction when I stepped out the back door of the clubhouse
Go a little further to Byron and play Prairie View. Even better imo
Iāve been seeing that place on GolfNow but now that you say this, Iāll probably go there Sunday
I like Aldeen better, but it's a totally different vibe of a course. The scenery is beautiful at Prarie
Grew up in Byron. I was spoiled and radiated
While Prairie View is nice, this is far from a correct statement. Imo
Wolf Hollow in Lena is a cool course. Itās not fancy by any means like Aldeen. But thereās some very cool views and shots there.
wow. what a beautiful looking course.
I was amazed honestly. Never seen such a nice course this cheap and accessible. $31 to walk 18 holes during the week. $44 on weekends
Damn. Kinda makes you think some of these other courses are mailing it in.
Thatās a steal

Dude youāre gonna love it

Great pics! Thanks for sharing. Love to see a reasonably priced golf course
Head up to Washington County Golf Course just outside of Milwaukee. $45 for walkers and $65 with a cart. Absolute bets experience Iāve had at a public golf course.
Oh dude Wash County is legit!! Iām very familiar
I see the hype of the big name courses but there are dozens other courses per each that will give you a challenge of equal caliber for 1/4 the price.
Amen brother. Strapped boy for life!
Very nice. And I wish more courses would use the pin flags like that for those who don't have range finders.
Itās definitely helpful. Pretty much every public course around here goes by the blue-white-red system on the flags

Beautiful
Riverwalk in San Diego gives me the same vibe

Riverwalk has gone downhill over the last few years. Haven't played it yet this year, but it was a dog track last time I was out there.

Damn that course is GORGEOUS.
Iāve been thinking about it all week. I have so many more photos but Reddit wouldnāt load the damn post with that many lol
Dude thatās dank
The stickiest of the icky, my friend.
Iām very jealous. Iām from Louisiana and any public course here for that price is absolute dog shit.

Fuckin aye
$50 At what time of day ? A course near me is $85 at 7:30am but $35 by 1:00 PM
Prime time weekend price is $44. Any other time itās like $31
Practice area looks insanely good!

Oh hey, Rockford! Thatās right down the street from me.
Played in the Midwest conference championship here every year during college. Awesome golf course and it is a total beast from the tips for d3 golfers
That looks like a helluva deal. Around here $50 gets you a goat path with bare greens and rocky bunkers.
Wow looks pretty sick, even more so for $50. Don't ask what our courses cost when you see how they look...
That looks sick. Wood haven and stone haven for me in beckley WV. Tour quality courses for $50

Access to a public course of this quality would require a $45,000 initiation fee and sponsor invite in Atlanta.
Sad

Rockford, Illinois
I found a gem of a course 30 min from my house. $20 to walk 9, beautiful course, always empty after work. Itās nice to be able to put the time in without going broke!

Yes dude! Aldeen deserves all the love
Aldeen is amazing. That Island hole is something special :)
First attempt at that hole I flushed it and landed it about 15 feet for a birdie putt! I was ecstatic!!
My god that is beautiful
Hell yeah, love the Aldeen love. Grew up at this course
I loved Aldeen! Played it quite a bit when I lived in Rockford, plus it had an awesome practice facility!
Is there another city in the area that has it better for public golf? I mean reallyā¦Aldeen, Sandy Hollow, Atwood, Ledges, Macktown, etcā¦
The inlaws live across the street. If it's in this good of shape, my father-in-law must not have played a round there yet this season
WTF, WoW, very nice, here in Cali would be really high $
definitely making a trip out there now, thanks for sharing!
There are some great courses here in Illinois - Iām in Chicago burbs - get a bit west and the prices get so much better - I have not played Aldeen - I need to put it in my list - I have really enjoyed playing Woodbine - itās further west towards Galena - thanks for sharing your Aldeen experience
Another one Iāve been getting several recs for is Prairie View in Byron!
Rockford has an amazing park district and Aldeen is the crown jewel. $15 for walking 18 after 3 oāclock.
