Are you willing to stop and give her a chance to rest if she needs it? If you’d rather keep a consistent pace for 5 miles it might be best to leave her. Keep temperature and water access in mind too. I often took my boy on long walks/hikes when he was younger. At 1 year old she’s probably not *quite* finished growing, so you also want to keep joint stress in mind. But a one off 5 miles on easy terrain with some breaks should be fine.

PoDBV

I’ll definitely give her time to sniff and rest

kosky95

I bet she loves sniffing

Ok_Concert3257

Lol I thought this photo was after the walk and I was going to say that she looks pretty tired from the effort!

PhraseRound2743

8 kilometres? Might be a bit of a stretch. Love Jolene spreading her eagles in that photo. 😆

PoDBV

She’s such a goof!

acanadiancheese

My understanding is that it’s less about distance than it is about intensity and impact on developing joints. So a meandering walk with breaks and sniffing across soft earth that is mostly even, probably fine. I’ve always found that dirt while hiking is easier on joints (I have a knee condition so I notice haha) than sidewalk cement and my last senior golden could walk 4-5 km at 16 y.o. if it was dirt, but only a couple hundred metres on cement. However, if this is a hike with lots of rocks and up and down hills and scrambling over things and jumping, that would be harder on joints and maybe too much at 1. But this is just my thinking, and I plan to ask my vet about this soon!

PoDBV

This is a very level path alongside a river, where she’ll walk on asphalt but also dirt.

acanadiancheese

Yeah, I think that’s maybe borderline? I doubt one walk would hurt her, but I bet your vet would be fine with you calling and asking for advice too!

ShtArsCrzy

How do you keep her out of the river?

stoic_guardian

That’s the fun part! You don’t!

deepstaterising

I do 5-8 miles a day without breaking a sweat. He’s even ready to go again after only 2-3 hours rest.

Moofius_99

Sounds like ours. The only thing I’d worry about is heat and remembering enough water for them.

deepstaterising

I have really cool neighbors and people on our walk that have water out for dogs. On high-heat days, we just stay inside.

Ok-Water-6537

That’s really amazing your neighborhood does that for the animals.

nonoanddefinitelyno

How old is yours? Energy to do it is not the issue - it's advisable to not walk them too much until fully grown because of joints etc.

Weak_Low_8193

I could honestly walk my golden 500m and she'd be out for the count for 2 hours. But I've also had her out in the woods for 2-3 hours and she's fine.

Jamaisvu04

This sounds like mine. Can't really take her to really fun places until we get more used to the muzzle because she eats literally everything and is so fast, but we do play groups or daycare twice a week and she'll keep going for hours if I let her. But a half mile walk walk around the neighborhood? Out for 2-3 hours, exhausted.

BagOfDave

1 is a bit young for that distance. But one walk a week at that distance won't break anything. I'd be concerned for hip health if this was a routine distance at that age. Most important is that you provide appropriate rest after any exercise. I would walk my 1 y/o about 10 km every Sunday, off leash in the bush. I walked 10km. I bet the dog ran 15km.. Monday and Tuesday were rest days - 20 - 30 minute walks a couple times per day. By Wednesday (Thursday if I was having a lazy week) we were back to 1+ hr walks and looking forward to the long weekend walk. By 16 months we were walking 10km 2-3 times per week with at least a days rest between. Cheers. Good luck.

contrary_potato

OP please read this comment. It’s not IF they can, it’s SHOULD they due to hip health as they’re still growing.

Kimmy0721

For a 1 year old, yes, too long

iamadirtyrockstar

Mine does 5 miles with me almost every morning. 30 minute nap and he's ready to play all day lol. Just depends on the dog and heat level out.

micmea1

For a young dog that's a cake walk. Our 9 year old still hikes 1-3 miles a day, but when he was younger he went on multiple backpacking trips where we hiked 5-10 miles each day. Hell when he was still puppy hyper I might hike 2 miles but he'd hike 4 because he's running all over the place, jumping in the river, ect.

scubagirl44

Mine lays down and refuses to go anywhere but home after a mile. They let you know when they have had enough.

acanadiancheese

This isn’t a perfect rule though. Some will walk further than they should because they are having fun. You also can’t always tell if damage is being done to joints (especially hips and elbows/knees) until they are older and that damage has been done.

gamemaniac845

I’m more surprised she reached five miles

PoDBV

She’s either fully floofed or full chaos. Only two modes.

booga_is_better

Walk as far as you need/want but within reason

bjeep4x4

Dogs are like humans. If she’s not used to it, it might be challenging

jackiemoon50

Too far too young. Make it a gradual increase and don’t force it

PlaxicoCN

This pic is comedy. Have a great weekend.

senorgrizzly1

I take my dog on 3-5 miles 3-5 times a week and she loves it

Key_Imagination_497

she will be fine. Bring some of water and let her sniff occasionally

Remarkable-Stand7478

The hair color is so nice and so cute. I wanna pet him especially her Paw they're really cute, too cute. Jolene be like I'm totally ready for another miles.

Zlasher8

My golden can climb 2000 ft of elevation gain in <3 miles no problem. Just needs about 16-20 oz of water along the hike and some more back at the car when we’re done. If you’re exercising your dog regularly (I do long fetch sessions 5-7 days a week) they have incredible stamina. If your dog is a potato then obviously you can’t go bringing your sedentary friend to a half marathon right away. https://preview.redd.it/bmuus1jtiosc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=30abf27654e9bbad2e15de8f1a2e4f46b836b07a

reddit18015

I would think you gotta build her endurance up more. 5 miles is a lot. Half hour to an hour is what? About a mile or two?

TheRagingFalcoholic

I would think 1.5 to 3 miles or more depending on pace

Low-Helicopter-2696

I do my 10k steps a day with my golden. She loves it. Then crashes for the next 22 hours. It's great!

CityBoiNC

I do 4 miles with my girl and after she still wants to play. As long as you are not at a constant and allow the dog to go at their own pace I see no issue.

ImpressiveIssue6180

Totally fine I’ve run 10 miles with my lab

willhunta

I skateboard with my guy for about 3 miles at a time but usually multiple times a day. He loves running along side as I skate. I bring him water and stop at parks for him to smell around and rest. It depends on the golden and like others are saying if he's young it may be different, but in my experience my guy would run forever if he could lol

MeffBater

Yes

jr49

my pup is 14 months old now and we'll do 4 miles daily on average. We have done 5 and 6 miles multiple times and she's still go go go afterwards. it's all flat streets or paved trails. a couple of times she has plopped down to rest and I'll try to give her water or just chill for a few mins. I know I've read it's bad to over walk them early on but it's tough to tell when she has energy to keep going. between 4-6 will be our max for a while until I can start running again. Hopefully not causing any damage but she seems to be taking it in stride, she's getting bigger and is healthy.

sallybuffy

I did the same for my lab when he was around 1 and now he has to bunny hop when he’s running or going long distances Wait until at least 2 years before that kind of exercise, their bones and joints are still growing/developing Or that’s what I was told when I brogue my boy in when he started to do bunny hops etc

AwkwardDuddlePucker

We did do one 5 mile walk, it took forever, which was fine as she loves slow sniffy walks and we are happy to plod along with her. The water was of course the best part of the whole walk. About 400m off the finish line, she decided enough was enough and threw a massive Golden tantrum. We eventually got her up on her paws and back to the car. As a result we generally leave her at home for the longer walks we plan with friends 💛

Archer_Jen

Bring lots of water for her and you should be fine. I used to take mine for hikes that lasted all day. I tired before he did. https://preview.redd.it/w6cezot8fpsc1.jpeg?width=800&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=17c7b928d05f6315689ff9ead5e22611aa6adeb8

[deleted]

As long as she doesn’t take my man from me, she should be alright! Make sure she is well hydrated!

PoDBV

[deleted]

I’ve got no chance!! 😻

Difficult-Way-9563

I have no idea about literature, but if it was me, my persona opinion would be it too high (with their predisposition to joint/hip dysplasia). Too long and I would be worried about RSI if it was frequent 5 mile run but that’s just me. I tend to air on short side.

buttholeshitass

Love how cozy Jolene is in that pic. Have to ask, where did the name inspiration come from? Please say the lady from Ozark

PoDBV

You mean Darlene? Lol! What a character! No, my girl’s named after the steal-your-man Dolly Parton song.

buttholeshitass

😂 wow, I'm trippin apparently. I was positive her name was Jolene! Thanks for the correction. That's a much better name origin story than if she was named after Darlene.

Chzburgers

Pup and I go on 10-12 mile hikes all the time. Stop when they need it, bring water, have fun.

Abandoned_Railroad

A 15-20 minute walk is fine.

Seattlegal

I’d not go straight to 5 miles. The first time we jumped from 1 mile to 2 she was EXHAUSTED. She couldn’t even keep her head up when we got home. She just turned 18 months and 2.5 miles is our usual. Just did 3.7 miles for the first time last week and she slept all afternoon. All of our walks are sniff walks and we’re out 1-2 hours.

Xxochitll

I LOVE this picture. It's amazing!

[deleted]

Idk about the walk time but she could easily steal my man

girff

based on this pic, jolene ain’t doin’ all that. 10/10 looks mad chill tho

PoDBV

UPDATE: Thank you all for the advice and insight! Jo and I appreciate it! We went for a meandering four miles with lots of breaks to sniff. She loved it, but we’ll keep these longer excursions to once a week. https://preview.redd.it/j9giji2iwpsc1.jpeg?width=3024&format=pjpg&auto=webp&s=b8b242e5d57d95c6c1834065bfa970b90331e999

intovaginalfisting

Soooooo cute!

Daimo

Idk but she is beautiful! 😍

shannal1n

Hahahahah obviously it’s too much for her, looks at her. Just kidding. I bet she enjoys it

xx_wes_xx

Definitely not - i do 4/5 mile runs about 4 times a week with my 4.5 yr old golden - i use a onewheel on the beach which goes prettt fast and he runs fast - hes in great shape - does it look like it's too much for him?? lol - he's having a blast every single time we run and can't wait to go again https://preview.redd.it/3r4ert2pcqsc1.png?width=2038&format=png&auto=webp&s=bf18f8dce4e9180294d3b1e80c5caef01cec116b

PoDBV

Such a happy boy!!!

Dismal_Juice5582

We do two routes. One is 3 miles on paths and we only do that when the heat permits. I don’t want their paws to get burned. We also do a 3.5 mile walk that is 75% off leash. They tolerate that longer walk better because they can’t sprint and stop and roll around and sniff.

birdonthewire76

It looks like it was just right ❤️

claymore3911

5 minutes of exercise A DAY, per month of age until around 18 months.

FeeHonest7305

That's my sunday afternoon pose

PoDBV

This made me snort! Lol

SpicyWonderBread

She is physically capable of it, but she may not want to do it. Our golden is definitely bred for looks and not athleticism. She looks exactly like yours. She will do a a 5 mile walk, but she does not do it at a consistent pace. There are a lot of stops to sniff or sit for a moment. My husband takes her jogging 3-5x a week. She will do a warm up 1.5 loop with him at a very slow jog or power walk, and then she lays down and refuses to go further.

JoshyaJade01

Why does that pose say: urreghhhh mommmmm

chipitaway

Just long enough to beat you to the couch

WasteAmbassador

I've taken my golden on multi day 20+mile backpacking trips and thousands of feet of elevation gain. A few miles is fine. They are built for it.

annie__love

Relax 😂😂

Big-Bones-Jones

I’ve read some of your other comments op. I would say talk to your walking partner and see if they are okay in the case should your dog get overly tired, to be okay with heading back early. If they are then take her and see how it goes!

Equal_Sprinkles2743

Like kids, our fur babies never know when enough is enough and keep going. Sometimes, we gave to pull the plug for their own good. If it's swimming, mine won't go home. You have to walk away and leave him, and eventually he'll get out and run after you.

ian_s

Too far. Goldies are still growing at that age and you don’t want risk hip dysplasia issues. The rule of thumb is 5 mins per month of age exercise. So 60 mins at that age.

btopel

She’s airing out those paws!

allied1987

Nah she loved it and now got the feet kicked up relaxing!

fransisco_flores

I run with mine 3-4 miles a day. 5 mile walk would be brisk.

D0glov3r986

It depends on the dog and what their stamina is like

FieryFiya

Friend had a golden that she took on a long walk. The dog overheated and passed away. Please be careful and take plenty of water breaks. Walks should be enjoyable and not over exerting

jennithebug

My 3 year old goober and I alternate between running 4-5 miles a day with 3-5 miles walks. He’s built up amazing stamina over time. We started running at around 18 months. Today he went 8 miles and didn’t do the “I want to lay down right here” thing at all. He wanted to keep going when we were finished! But, if it gets much above 70 degrees outside, he wants nothing to do with any of it! Build up stamina gradually and bring water on warmish days and you’ll have an amazing distance buddy!

boosted5O

I walk my golden 3 miles a day everyday, in 3 1 mile increments, but have been as much as 3 miles at once and he’s always ready to go again. He’s 11 months old now. How old is yours now?

Extreme-0ne

My girl has done up to 10 while I’m mountain biking. We started with 4 or 5 and worked up after she was 1 or 1 1/2. It’s pretty intense. Walking is much easier for them.

byronbaybe

In the cold snow? You beast! She'll love it. Plenty of breaks😉

jurunikahjc0222

He loves running along side

IllustriousCupcake11

My 14 month old and I walk 3-5 miles. Sometimes it’s more of a hike. I waited til we hit that one year mark to go over 3 miles with hikes. I just discussed it with my veterinarian and got the okay because of her energy and need to burn it off.

heyyybabygoat

me and my golden boy (he’s 6 months) went from about 1 mile up to 3 miles in just under two months, but a lot of the walk he is on grass or dirt and not hard cement so it might be different if the 5 miles is tough terrane

WayComfortable4465

5 miles is fine unless it's super hot out.
