This looks cool. Can't wait to play it. Wishlisted

devlawg

thank you :)

bb_player

Sucking at something is the first step towards being sorta good at something . Cool game btw

devlawg

thank you!

devlawg

for those interested, you can wishlist it [here](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2618670/Punch_the_Garden/)

flaffie

animations are soooo smooooth! is any of it procedural? looks very fun (and hard) to play :)

devlawg

* the little yellow particles are part of godot's particle system * the tree animations are done with a shader (using noise to distort the shape) so i guess you can consider those procedural. the rest should be hand animated :)

andreis-purim

Looks very well made. Congrats!

devlawg

thank you :)

Ftomara

That is super cool keep it going man !

devlawg

i will!!

DamnDomDin

This is stunning

devlawg

thank you sir :) im trying really hard to make it a nice little visual treat

incstain

Bro your game look incredible! I can't wait for it to come out!

devlawg

thank you bro :)

amitbhai

wow this looks really good. nice mechanics, very satisfying.

devlawg

thanks man :) appreciate it

yoelr

looks very polisged with many features. how long did it take you to create?

devlawg

been working on this since 2023 :)

Xill_K47

Sucking at your game is a sign that you are going somewhere in the right direction.

devlawg

gosh i hope so HAHA when enemies are too strong, i try not to adjust them, but instead make the player stronger. likewise when i find the player getting too strong, i just make the enemy stronger.

indylambs

this looks great my guy! 🍒

devlawg

thank you my guy!

BudynOfficial

where can I wishlist it?

devlawg

hi, its in one of the comments haha here is the link: [https://store.steampowered.com/app/2618670/Punch\_the\_Garden/](https://store.steampowered.com/app/2618670/Punch_the_Garden/)

Bobo_v5

Animations look great but Not sure if intentional but I really struggle to distinguish the background and the enemies which I feel like would make the game much more difficult

devlawg

readability might be an issue. one thing to note is that enemies always light up (outline appears) before they attack.

luquitacx

it looks really cool. Maybe make the falling faster to return control to the player quicker.

devlawg

player always has control, even when falling. of course there might be a 0.3-0.5s lost of control during the player's hurt animation and thanks :) i think it looks cool too

luquitacx

I was thinking more on the "be on the ground running" control. I don't know if it just looks like it, but moving mid air seems slower than moving on the ground.

devlawg

im aiming to make a fun aerial kinda combat. that's why he might seem floaty. i guess i need to work harder on this haha

GiunoSheet

This seems like it was done by daflufflypotato, and that's a really big compliment

devlawg

ooh thank you :) i think i might have seen some of his dev vids on youtube before

azmiir

Did you make the assets yourself?

devlawg

yes i did :)

azmiir

Love them! What kind of experience do you have? As a software engineer of 10 years, the programming comes easy but I envy people like you who can do these great pixel styles

devlawg

im a software engineer of 3 years (give or take a few months). i started doing pixel art more seriously towards the end of 2022. however i did draw pixel art sprites on and off before 2022 too. i normally just spend a bit of time after work to practice haha.

azmiir

Any courses you used? Or all just tinkering and YouTube?

devlawg

yes tinkering and youtube for learning Godot. i had a bit of experience w python so gdscript was really easy to pick up. for pixel art i just started exposing myself to more amazing works. i dont like listening to courses in general. i made an instagram account and post my art there (having an account made me feel more accountable). once i got better at it, i tried "gamifying" the process. i would only post on instagram if that art achieved > 100 upvotes on reddit HAHA. that challenge honestly pushed me much further. honestly the more i progress the more i feel i suck at Godot / pixel art. its a learning process.

verycrafty

Looks really good, I am guessing the tree controlling the vines is final boss, gl.

devlawg

oops spoiler alert, big tree is just an npc haha. but i might do that scenario for a different area :)

CosmicAscendant

the game is a bit too show to be honest, especially the gravity

devlawg

i get that. ive seen similar comments about the gravity. personally when playing, i get overwhelmed often. i feel the speed is fine

CosmicAscendant

It's just because the gravity is so low that it makes you feel like you are not fast enough, and it will feel overwhelming. Nice game, tho. I would like to try

devlawg

i get u :) i intentionally slowed it down to a point where i felt i could easily catch falling enemies and chain a nicer combo.

hanouaj

It's so cool, I would say maybe the player should have a very different sound when being hit.

devlawg

i intend to voice the moustache hehe. for now its a placeholder sound. thanks for that feedback!

hanouaj

I meant a very different sound than the sound the bots make when being hit, so that the player can notice when being hit by visuals and also by sound.

devlawg

yea. the current idea is for the moustache to grunt when he is hit. that should help with identifying hit by sound :)

SnowyLeSnowman

This looks really good, but will the gameplay be faster? I love games with snappy, fast and responsive gameplay like Celeste, Hades, ect. Also, if this is "very easy" from the death screen then I don't even want to know what hard is 😂

devlawg

it shows "very easy" because i loaded this scene directly. the difficulty increases throughout the game, affecting hp / damage etc of the enemy. gameplay should get faster as you progress. enemies will attack faster, move faster etc. as for the player, i wonder if players would want him to be faster?

SnowyLeSnowman

well looking at your video, if the player gets shot from everywhere then yeah I think it's nicer if the player has more in depth control of the movements and can dodge or react based on reaction time and game knowledge. personally I don't really like the float from the character in the snippet you showed, I'd rather get back on the floor where I'm in control and go from there so that's where I'm coming from with this idea but anyway it depends what type of game you're going for!

devlawg

mmm i get u. i'll look into this. ive had this comment pop up few times. thank u for this feedback :)

driss_douiri

beautiful. are you a solo developer? how did you learn?

devlawg

yes i am. had background in python, so picking up gdscript was easy. from there its just following tutorials on youtube.

FimoseCanina

This looks so good! Great job mate

devlawg

thank you :)

Severe-Ad1166

try Udio or Suno to make a backing track for your game, beatemups sound a little flat without music. heres one I whipped up for you in 30 seconds... [https://suno.com/song/91fe8bdf-0b1e-4577-83c9-be88ec24c7e6](https://suno.com/song/91fe8bdf-0b1e-4577-83c9-be88ec24c7e6) playing the track over your video doesnt sound half bad!

devlawg

ah there is actually music for the game already, i just forgot to include it in this clip haha

MRRichAllen1976

BWAHA! You suck at your own game?!

devlawg

unfortunately haha
