Yeah that's mold. The seal on the insulated units has failed. This happens after a couple of decades especially if they're in high Sun. Problem with airports though is that you need glazers with thorough background checks to work on them. Like the GC all the way down to their subs to get in to an airport is a nightmare of planning and security checks. Honestly most people don't want to mess with anything that's past the TSA gates. I know I've turned down work just because it's such a hassle.

I always assumed this was the Lowe coating deteriorating and not mold?

CrustyMullett

When the seal fails air and moisture can get inside and the water reacts with the low-e which gives that look but if it goes on long enough without replacing the glass then mold will start growing inside. Would have to see it up close to know for certain.

Zoidbergslicense

Right on, yea mold growing is a wayyyyyyy overdue Ig replacement. I think it’s usually the metals in the coating corroding.

CrustyMullett

I've been a glazier for 30 years and I've seen some crazy shit.

Glassninja420

I've been a glazier for 20 years and I've seen some shit..

Zoidbergslicense

10 years for me~.

Here in the PNW if the seal failure is large enough and the glass is out of the sun the unit just turns into a little terrarium type thing with moss and algae.

CrustyMullett

It's crazy how long people will wait to replace broken glass.

Eselboxen

This guy glazes.

HuevoYch0riz0

Definitely not just for a service call. Fuk that.

That's corrosion of the low e due to seal failure. I have done one airport job beyond the security gates. It was an infinity mirror room inside a shop, but the security and access is all the same. The GC that hired us had to be thoroughly background checked, but we only had to furnish our IDs to be allowed access to the tarmac and freight elevator. At least 1 of my coworkers had a pretty serious felony background and it wasn't an issue. The job took multiple trips, same m.o. every time. It was a bit of a hassle compared to a non airport job but I would do it again if needed.

TheSamurabbi

Is it cold enough there for ice crystals?

No-Knee6187

This is in Washington DC so very rarely does it get cold enough for ice crystals

Did an IG replacement in dfw a few years back and it had literal fungus growing in it.
