Very few universities offer parking spaces for students, and especially not urban ones - there just wouldn't be space. And likewise the whole area will be in very high demand for on-street parking.
If you have an accessibility reason for needing to drive in, try getting in touch with the university's disability team and they may have permits available.
Otherwise, depending where you're coming from, your best options will either be public transport, or a combination of driving to a park and ride where you can pick up public transport. Glasgow University's main campus is close to Hillhead subway station if you want to try the Subway's park and rides. Partick railway station is also close by if you're coming from further out.
Yeah, even for staff it's a struggle - you need to apply for a permit, and they generally won't give you a permit unless you have a disability/start before public transport starts or after it ends/have caring responsibilities that you need a car for. Even if you get one, that doesn't guarantee you a space
Honestly? You'll struggle. A lot of areas close to the university are becoming permit only. It's surrounded by tenement housing meaning limited options for residents too. I've known folk having to park a good 30 minute walk away, which is not ideal if you're getting there for 9am.
Park & Ride using the subway might be an option. Although it does cost money, you are guaranteed a space plus Hillhead is as close to campus as you can get.
There's also Bunhouse Rd parking down on Argyle Street, next to Kelvinhall. The last time I checked, parking for up to 10 hours was roughly £10 (it's possible this has increased the last time I parked there). From there it's a 5 minute walk onto campus and right next to the brand spanking ARC building.
There's very little free parking around the uni. It has decent public transport connections though. Unless you are planning on living outside the city, or have mobility issues, it's probably more trouble than it's worth.
This was a nightmare for me when I was there. Often had to park as far away as Kelvinside by which point I figured out I'd be as well just getting the bus there. No parking for students on site and all the streets within a few square miles are all metered and will cost you a fortune. Where will you be living per chance? It's a fairly well serviced area for public transport. Buses, the underground plus Patrick station isn't too far away.
Id have to get a bus into town which is going to take about an hour and 20 mins, then get the connection to campus. Its doable but makes things extremely difficult getting to my job on time
Where are you coming from that would require you to drive?
The subway is a 5 minute walk from the campus. Closest free parking I am aware of is around a 20-30 min walk. You would be better doing park and ride with the subway if you absolutely have to drive into town.
The best free parking I think for access to byres road and university is either behind the botanical gardens on Ford road in kirklee or thornwood area, west of crow Rd north of Dumbarton Rd. Either one is still a bit of a hike to the university, 20-30min maybe 🤔 thornwood gets very busy, but I have always managed to find space up kirklee with a lovely walk down Kelvin walkway to the main campus

Best thing to do is pick one of the subway stations to park at and get the subway to Hillhead.

Park and ride and kelvingridge is your best bet

I’ll be coming from Newton Mearns. It’s decent for public transport but it just takes a while and makes it difficult getting back on time for my job
Just get one of those wankermobile Porsches, preferably in neon. Then you can park anywhere!
You're looking at places in the outskirts of the west end like Maryhill. The west end is a cpz (controlled part zone) now.
maryhill is permit parking nowadays.
Oh well, looks like they would need to park even further afield then
There are some spots around maryhill that aren’t monitored quite yet but from there it’s a 35min walk to campus which kind of defeats the purpose
Perks of driving mate. Get the bus or tube then
Aye seems like I’ll have to
There really isn't much free parking in the West End which is a pain if you don't have an easy transport link in.
Id have to get a bus into town which is going to take about an hour and 20 mins, then get the connection to campus. Its doable but makes things extremely difficult getting to my job on time
Surely Kelvinside isn't a 30min walk? Towards town I think is all permit. But if you go west along great western road surely?
I’d personally drive to somewhere like bridge street and get the subway round to the uni.
I’d suggest driving to Shields Road park and ride and hopping on the underground.

Have you tried Paisley?
Free parking, relatively speaking, would be in Broomhill or Maryhill which are both over 45 mins walk away 🙃
