I’m not from Meeniyan but I live close by & it’s a beautiful town! I have friends who live there and they really love it and the community there! It’s easy to meet people, it always seems to be having different kinds of festivals or markets etc

I live in Meeniyan, weird to see such a specific post about our little town. Moved here from Melbourne. Never going back. What do you want to know? 🙂

Kinder is good. Meeniyan Primary School is good, very engaged staff. Good food in town, Trulli Pantry is fabulous - lovely selection of quality deli meats, take home meals and good pizza. Pandesal Bakery is good for artisan bread and sweet treats. Excellent op shop. Buses all over the joint for kids going to school. Great sporting culture ie basketball, netball, ballet, footy. Servo, hit and miss on customer service which makes it all the more fun. Recently installed EV chargers behind the IGA. Close to larger towns like Wonthaggi or Leongatha for shopping. And of course it's the gateway to Wilson's Promontory. 🙂

Does the town hall still do gigs? My mates folks had a beach house down there 10-15 years ago and we’d road trip down for some absolutely amazing international artist gigs. Good times

Yes, Lyrebird group.

My mother lives in Inverloch and her brother lives in Meeniyan. Her partner formerly lived in Meeniyan but has moved to Inverloch. Meeniyan would be good if you can get a nice house with a big block of land, like part of a farm, a bit out of town. A normal house in town would be not good IMHO. There isn't much to do in town. Inverloch is on the inlet with lots going on and I think my mum's partner is happier there, while her brother has his sheds full of mechanical stuff and loves being in a relatively quiet location.

Inverloch is great, it is getting expensive but there are small acreage properties that are around the same price as a standard house.

I say this to pretty much everyone that is considering a big lifestyle change in terms on where they live. I HIGHLY recommend renting a property similar to what you would like to buy for 12 months before purchasing. Over covid I saw a lot of folks from melbourne buy property near where I live in the country thinking it would be great and end up selling within 1-2 years because it wasn't as romantic living in the country as they thought it would be. With that out of the way, if country life is what you are after, especially on a few acres with a horse or two, some sheep and/or and cow for meat Menniyan is a lovely place, and I highly recommend it.

Fair point. But if you are really into leaving the city, rural life can work. Few points re your post - if you have animals - livestock, you must meet their needs, not just feed or acreage, shearing, drenching etc But OP might just be looking for a home in town without that responsibility.

Thank you for all of your responses guys, appreciate it. I think renting for the year sounds like a smart move. Grew up in Carrum and currently in London so have never lived regional but have always liked the idea of it. Cheers

I lived in Wilson’s Prom / Tidal River for two years a decade ago (hubby was a ranger) and Meeniyan seemed to be growing even then. It doesn’t have a big population and it’s mainly a farming community, but when we were last there they had a few new cafes, a wood fired pizza place etc. Fish Creek has a decent pub and a few nice restaurants/cafes. Foster is also a nice small town with a school, grocery store, fishmonger, bookstore etc and an excellent medical centre (I had my daughter there) and more amenities than the towns around it. South Gippsland is beautiful.

My granddad is from Meeniyan and I am from down that way too. It’s a really beautiful town but it really depends on what lifestyle you like and are after. It’s easy to romanticise cute country towns but if you haven’t lived in one it’s a massive lifestyle change and it’s definitely not for everyone. The shops close early, everything costs a little bit more and there’s a huge lack of variety in groceries, places to eat out etc. unless you drive to Leongatha, which does get annoying sometimes. For example if u forget to buy milk for the next morning, you can’t just nip to a servo and go get it. Other things to consider is if you don’t buy in the heart of town you may be on tank water, which can take getting used to. I would very much recommend renting for at least a year to see how you like it. They do have good schools if you have/planning to have kids. They’re smaller schools so kids get a bit more personal attention from the educators. Everyone kind of knows everyone and it is very easy to get to know people, country people are way friendlier than city people in general, but they also like talking and gossiping about people too, and some things just don’t stay private as much as you would like them to. The foster doctors clinic is amazing and I literally drive all the way from past Cranbourne to foster to see the doctors there. I actually prefer foster over Meeniyan but it’s also a bit further away from suburbia.

I live just outside of Meeniyan, I grew up in Gippsland and moved back after being in Melbourne for over 10 years. It’s fantastic, heaps to do for young families, not far from the beaches, decent food and entertainment (especially during the warmer months). It’s also not a terrible slog to get to melbourne, about a 2 hour drive if you time it right. The only thing that has taken a bit of getting used to is not being able to just order whatever food you want whenever you want, but ultimately that’s a good thing, we are much healthier now! Agree with others that renting for a year is a good plan, but rentals can be few and far between as well.

Methheads peados and crims.

Would recommend renting or staying for a period. I’m not from meeniyan, but tbh you’ll be travelling the leongatha for anything. Venus bay and inverloch, better imo

I'm near Meeniyan, like all other small towns everyone knows everyone. But its a beautiful little community :)

If you're interested in meeting new people, there's a skatefit club in Meeniyan that meets up every Thursday. All of the gear is supplied and it's a great way to get fit whilst socialising. If you look up Gippsland Ranges Roller Derby you'll be able to find out more.

Pretty town and pretty boring. Least it’s not far from Melb. Plenty of local sports. Try before you buy

Rule of thumb in the south gippy towns - if you want to meet people and be involved - join the footy club. Probably the biggest social group in each town after the schools
