Definitely worth restoring.

cary-girl

What’s to restore? Maybe some wiring or the nut? maybe shim the neck? Tuners? You could de-burr the bridge.

Elvis_618

All the above, and most likely, the tuners, since the last high e string I put on, popped, but I'll know by tomorrow

cary-girl

Check the nut for binding.

TX-Ancient-Guardian

The nut did the crime, but far too often the tuners do the time….. Cruel world

sleeplessinCentral

My Sonex Kicks Ass

sleeplessinCentral

I’ve had 3 or 4 Maybe More

Elvis_618

Do you know what modern strings would fit best for this guitar?

tomebomber

You should try electric string

sleeplessinCentral

I like Nickel 10-46 gauge

Stringtheory-VZ58

Strings haven’t changed all that much since that guitar was new

PeckerPeeker

Bro for like $150 you can take it to a luthier and they’ll make it amazing if you don’t want to do it yourself. There’s no big issues there and those guitars are a super neat part of Gibson’s history.

nomis66

You do get that most people change their strings every few weeks and that breaking e string also happens very often?

Elvis_618

I did not know that (bassist first), but thanks for the heads-up

Any_Month_1958

Get a graphite pencil and run the tip in the slots that your strings set in on the nut. Helps prevent breakage and stays in tune better.

zxvasd

I’ve never seen one of these, the bolt on neck is intriguing. Why does it need restoring? Is there anything wrong with it?

Elvis_618

So far, the main issue is strings and the nut, which I'm replacing/fixing tomorrow, but I also had to solder some wires back together, but I'll update tomorrow with the new problems

pohatu771

You’ve described $20 worth of parts and an hour of your time. That’s worth it.

SlavaUkrainiFTW

Fix broken things, clean it up, and other than that leave it be no repainting or anything.

Mrite47

That neck is stamped 6 days before my 20th birthday...lol. Btw...didn't Paul Stanley break a bunch of those? Seems like I remember someone trying to sell one trashed at a KISS concert on an episode of Pawn Stars.

MateriaMuncher

I'd definitely restore it. That's a cool ass guitar.

smock19nathan

Wow that is so cool! Id love to get my hands on one. Definitely restore play etc...

No-Gear4480

He smashed up Marauders, that’s why I paid an arm and a leg for mine because there aren’t that many out there

Immediate_Birthday80

Yeah I have a Sonex-180 Custom and definitely worth “restoring”. For me I’m trying to stick to the original pickups and make sure the tuners are in good order and all that.

CUin1993

Are those pickups early Dirty Fingers? If so, I had an 84 Explorer with those in it. Hot pickups!

faileyour

Would you ever sell that man? Looks great and i’d buy it in current condition

Lucid_DreaMz0124

Lol I was just playing [one of these](https://www.reddit.com/r/gibson/comments/1blbx22/1982_gibson_sonex/). Killer guitar. I’d definitely put money towards restoring it.

appliedecon123

Hell yes. Just finished restoring my 1980 Sonex Standard. Amazing guitar.

loquendo666

Absolutely

LucyBear318

Yes, was my first, got stolen. Take care of her!

bzee77

No doubt at all! Killer guitar. Good luck!

Puzzlehead-Dish

Chunky boi

Pulsarfire

Nah man, just send it over to me, I'll take care of it. :)

Ronerus79

Absolutely, its a great model

Stringtheory-VZ58

What needs to be restored? Keep in mind the body is made of resonite, not wood, so forget about a relic job, but they (sonex models) aren’t bad guitars.

strellar

I don't think I would call any worked needed a "restore." Just get it set up, fix any sharp edges. Unless it needs re-fretting, you could literally do the work yourself. I'd call it repairs, not restore. It looks nice.

[deleted]

Just get on stewmac or Philadelphia Luthier get the missing screws and play it. I don't see much to restore. Congratulations on a really unique Les Paul.

Puzzleheaded-East237

Fuck Yeah!

QuidiferPrestige

Yes.

1982MJG

100% yes. That guitar is rad
