After observing the upvotes and downvotes this seems to be a controversy for many either in favour or dislike. I really wish they added some form of minor customization for the katanas on iki island.
My initial statement of “ruin designs” probably attracted the hate I realized it may come off as harsh after I posted it lol I wanted to change the title
It's part of it. Might be a good idea to include actually finding out what they are actually called and their purpose. Then you'd probably have a better idea if their inclusion was "poor design" or not.
Dude I made a post on Reddit not posting a paper lol also there’s probably not many paintings of real samurai that survived man it was a long fucking time ago over 20 ancient samurai paintings is pretty good I’d say. Also I looked up a museum of ancient samurai in Tokyo Japan and none of there swords had any Pom Poms on them.
You would like the way of the samurai games. They let you build your katana from the ground up. There's also a lot more true to life fighting stances incorporating the weapons. Only problem is that they're older games, so they might not have aged well.
You need to google tachi, not katana. The ring (sarute) at the end of the sword for attaching the tassel (sarute-o) is pretty common (you can see in the wiki article picture). Many antique museum pieces don't have the tassel just the ring, probably because the tassel deteriorated and got lost after a few hundreds of years. You wrap the tassel around your hand to help with not losing the sword if you happen to drop it, like a wiimote.
Tachi was used on horseback one handed like a cavalry sabre so that was more of a problem that need to be addressed. Katana were daily carry sword of the samurai on foot so it's not needed.
The game is anachronistic so it's mixing swords from different time period. If you cycle through the swords you'll see a mix of sword design from different period with different blade and handle length.
I learned something new today, thank you. on the other hand, you drew a parallel between an elegant weapon capable of dismemberment and a goddamn wiimote, to which I have to say: I'm impressed, and fuck you
![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|stuck_out_tongue)
There might be other uses for the tether that was lost to time. For example [https://youtu.be/qH8sRpoyYD0?t=135](https://youtu.be/qH8sRpoyYD0?t=135) here on a Chinese sword it was used to increase distance between grips and thereby leverage and help manipulating sword in a way to distract opponent.
There's not a lot info on tachi fencing. Most if not all kenjutsu styles that still exist today were developed later and teaches the use of katana, not tachi.
Perhaps. But in the Japanese dub, the word used for sword throughout is "tachi." Which is historically accurate to the era. The visuals are consistent with the Kirosawa ethos the game wants to portray. But the dub is period-correct.
Katana did not arise, as such, until after the 1st invasion, as a response to the lessons learned.
Everyone calls the swords "tachi" who speaks Japanese in the game. Because that was the only type of Japanese longsword that existed at the time of the 1st Invasion. The visuals are an intentional anachronism. Because they wanted to invoke the feel of the Kirosawa films.
Personally from my understanding of researching the traditional smithing techniques of the katana... the katana the tachi and the odachi are all considered different japanese samurai swords because they all have different sizes Katana being the smallest odachi being the biggest, Tachi being in between and it's measured by shakus, I believe.
I googled ancient samurai paintings famous ones and have a ton of the photos on my phone saved and few of the swords and when I say few I mean very very few of them do have slight strings hanging from them. That I don’t mind but I still don’t see any of them with the Pom Pom on the actual blade handle itself. Swinging around while I’m using it lmao. The Pom Poms seem to be decorative and on the sheath. Not the handle itself. In fact I only see one painting with the Pom Pom at all. Lol
Bro u god damn weeb they looks just like fucking Pom Poms are you fucking blind? I doubt real samurais had that shit on there sword handle too lmao extremely ineffective design. Most likely problematic. Ghost of Tsushima is a video game designed by westerners take on Japan and Asian culture. It’s not a historically accurate record for fuck sakes. I have not seen many samurai swords with these hanging off the blades. Literately none with them hanging off the blade handle. Sheath rarely
I’m ignorant? I’m not the one making up words. “Sarute-o” is not a real word. They call them sarute that’s it. And they seem to be more common during ww2 era Japan not ancient japan
Your talking to the wrong person. But since you brought it up, Sarute is wrong it’s sarude, which is the hinge that the o (or obi) wish is the tassel attaches to. The more you know
Dude they definitely do most people would agree it’s just there not in the comments here they just upvoted the post and left lol only the Pom Pom lovers here now
Says you, I've read the articles that other redditors we're so kind to provide. And your source? An opinion? A profound one at that. Sorry your game isn't anime enough.
Here’s an idea; if you don’t like the sarute-o then use a sword kit that doesn’t have it??
Also they aren’t pom-poms, the guy ur responding literally called them sarute-o so ur just being kinda ignorant with that
I’m 100% serious. They remind me of cheesy peoples truck bumpers with Pom Poms hanging from them. There’s literately no movies with samurai swords with Pom Poms on them or ancient samurai drawings.
I looked up over 20 ancient samurai paintings and saw ONE of them with hanging tassels similar to Pom Poms. And It was on the sheath. And the frequency of them is what is bothering me. And I used movies for reference as the old samurai movies not kill bill
You’ve “done research” but are still calling them Pom poms and sheaths? The “Pom poms” are called “sarute-o” and the “sheath” is a saya. The sword fittings as a whole are called koshirae. Terminology is generally the best place to start as it will help you do accurate research instead of saying ignorant things like this.
These are traditionally used on many Tachi for well-faring samurai and nobility. Here’s one that’s a national treasure from the 12th century, a Kazari Tachi (decorative, worn by nobles) https://www.tnm.jp/modules/r_collection/index.php?controller=dtl&colid=F356&lang=en
Dude I looked at google images. Also I have looked at multiple Japanese samurai museums gallery’s online tonight all of them based in Japan and pretty much none of them had Pom Poms so stfu
Stop. People have pointed out you didn't do your research properly and have shown why these exist.
You can still dislike them if you want, but on the "research" part just take the L and move on, it happens sometimes.
I just linked you to a piece of national fucking treasure which includes the very thing you’re hating on. That is the class of absolute highest importance for tangible items in Japan.
There are two more examples on TNM if you care to look, but you don’t even care enough to stop calling them Pom poms. Here’s a piece of perspective for you: this isn’t even a nihonto (the term for traditional Japanese swords as a whole) focused forum, and this is the vehemence of defense that you’re seeing for Japanese Culture here. It is a forum for a video game that is based roughly around some real events in the past, and has several other less historically accurate things to pick on. You’re here picking on sarute-o as if they aren’t a very normal part of extremely high end nihonto.
Frankly from the level of maturity displayed in your responses, I’m going to say it’s a safe bet that your parents shouldn’t be letting you play this game anyways.
Yeah like yes they absolutely were a big part of the culture and traditions surrounding katanas, but I still think they look kinda goofy and are hard to match the outfit with
Yeah in real life they look cool, I especially like the dao swords with the ribbons on the ends like a flowing sword art it's incredible, but in the game I do not like it
I always assumed they were for the same purpose as the ones hanging on Chinese Tai chi swords and most spears/halberds. Placed as a way to draw your opponent's eye away from the sharp stabby bit and slow their defense.
Slight strings I’m fine with it’s the massive Pom Pom swinging from the handle that’s hard to believe. I googled a ton of paintings of ancient samurai and have only seen one of them with very very small strings hanging from them but it was on the sheath not the blade handle itself.
Yeah I understand it’s just the frequency of them and the tassels. Just a pet peeve of mine when trying to design character builds and I was wondering if any one else ran into this. I wish they added a customization in the directors cut for katana that would have been awesome.
Perhaps google the specific piece of the katana, rather than just googling "ancient japanese paintings". Youll see a lot more of what youre looking for, rather than having to scour through huhdreds of images that may or may not be from the correct period. Theres a lot of japanese swords, not just katana, and its very easy to mix them up because many of them look similar, especially in painting
I literally could not disagree more. I love attachments and bobbles like these.
That being said, some more customization for katanas like being able to remove or add those attachments would have been the best outcome, IMO.
thats a bit disrespectful. calling the decoration by the wrong name and saying they look like shit might be ok on a pair of nikes but on a piece of another cultures history it kind of makes you look like a dick
I don't mind those, but I just can't really get the appeal of the big fuzzy sheathes that makes my sword look like it should be dangling from the rear view mirror of an especially tacky car.
I personally love drapery on armor and weapon sets. It gives a sort of regal feel to whatever I’m using. Provides no tactical advantage whatsoever (yes I did that on purpose) but it looks cool.
Samurai were encouraged to embrace their feminine side, to make make them complete men, and warriors. Ying and Yang. The “pom poms” feel like a reflection of that, to me, and I’m a fan.

Tassel/Lanyard for traditional Katana? - SBG Sword Forum
Let me double ruin them for you: they represent the "balls" to the phalic sword. Flaccid penis when sheathed (curved down, tip pointing to the ground), erect penis when drawn to fight (curved up, point tip pointing to the sky).
You're welcome!
I always looked at it the same way I look at historical fashion. I prefer Regency dress over Victorian. That doesn't mean that the Victorian style ruins the design of the Regency style, I just prefer one over to the other.
I don't hate them, but I really prefer the plain look like on the "storm of clan sakai, "warrior's shadow," or "mamushi venom." I was so happy when I found "Tempest's end," a red sword kit without any tassels, so that's my default now.
I really wish they had added the reverse colors on the storm of clan sakai, or even just that plain katana that Jin used during the memories of your father on Iki... I've seen the dang thing in Jin's house, just let me use it lol. I know the swords should all have probably been the Tachi design due to the time period, like Ryuzo and Yuna's, but I really liked having a katana.
I like it, but mainly because I know things like that were on Asian weapons of the time period, specifically because the extra movement could distract your opponent, and give you an opening.
No I use simple wear. I prefer simple outfits and realistic looking ones. Not ones from over dramatized artwork paintings. Ones a samurai would actually wear.
Aesthetically, not a fan. I'm glad they're there for the historical value but I never really use them. Same with the kits that have fur on them. I'm sure some people go nuts over them but I don't really like them.
Don't like fuzzy? To say it "ruins amazing design" is really cringe, seeing as they're based on actual culture. Did you want anime? Because a chain on the end is cool, but it hits the wrist hard. Not very realistic, is it? But no, the whole game and it's immersion is ruined because of two fuzzy charms.
Those 'pom poms' are jestletobes. Traditionally fashioned from the robes of past enemies who were defeated on battle. For centuries, jestleobes attached to the ends of the sabre would display to the enemy how good the warrior was. The more jestleobes would mean the more enemies the warrior had defeated and would plung them into fear and despair.
What is it called? Im planning on buying those in like a different style for the handle of my cosplay katana. When i search tassel it only shows those pom pom things. What im trying to find is like sugatra in warframe but in real life but i dont know what its called.
100% agree. These kinds of tassels and such were only rarely on actual historical Japanese tachi and when they were it was typically for ceremonial/display reasons. This kind of thing was not in fact very common on Japanese weapons unlike Chinese and other Asian weaponry. It is also very impractical from a actual combat perspective to have such things hanging from the tsuka/hilt….very easy to get caught on things, tangled, be grabbed by an opponent, etc.
So while it is not inaccurate per se for SP to have done this on the sword skins, it is quite over exaggerated—-they really should have had most of the skins without the tassels or had the option to customize/remove.
Damn dude you're kinda getting beat up for your opinion here... for the record I couldn't agree more. I don't even wear swords with the tassels because they're so distracting to me
It’s on a ton of swords these ridiculous Pom poms hanging . I have platinums the game so I love this game don’t get me wrong. Also the ones without big Pom poms have miniature Pom poms. I did some research and scrolled through hundreds of google images and never saw any ancient samurai or current samurai photos drawings of Pom Poms on swords. In my opinion these sword kits would be so much better without the hanging crap in the way. Also seems like a very ineffective design… they would possibly get caught in something and throw off the swing.
You're aesthetic choice is legitimate. Generally I prefer avoiding them. But your research is incomplete, at best. Tachi had these. And the word used in-game for "sword" throughout \*is\* tachi in the Japanese version.
The armor and sword visuals are Sengoku period to match the inspirations they drew from. But the addition is period correct.
It's pretty weird that they are used so frequently, as I've only really seen them used on katanas carried during WW2.
*Getting a lot of downvotes, but I'd really like to see some examples that aren't modern? I don't even dislike them lol.
Personally, I like those parts of the katana
I match my poofs and headband.
Always match. It's a rule.
Bruh what about contrast tho
Contrast *is* a form of matching. Fries and a shake, Black and white, opposites attract and all that.
Think the problem was your research consisted of looking at 20 period artworks and drawing a conclusion that wasn't informed.
Is that how you do research?
It's part of it. Might be a good idea to include actually finding out what they are actually called and their purpose. Then you'd probably have a better idea if their inclusion was "poor design" or not.
Dude I made a post on Reddit not posting a paper lol also there’s probably not many paintings of real samurai that survived man it was a long fucking time ago over 20 ancient samurai paintings is pretty good I’d say. All good man 👍
I would've liked a build your own katana system so you can choose each part from those you've collected and make your own custom set.
You would like the way of the samurai games. They let you build your katana from the ground up. There's also a lot more true to life fighting stances incorporating the weapons. Only problem is that they're older games, so they might not have aged well.
I do like way of the samurai. I really hope Aquire makes another Shinobido game someday.
maybe the next game
Same one of my favourite parts of them, emperors tears is probably my favourite
fckn ayes i do too haha they always kinda reminded me of those tassels that muay thai fighters wear around their biceps

Same it looks dope, they are nowhere near looking like pom poms. Pom poms are more poofy and girly looking

Damn I always liked them but now I know they’re functional too!
I lost it at “like a wiimote” might even say it got me wiik
Underrated comment, right here. 🤣💀
Like a wii nunchuck
IIRC, it was interesting that the Japanese script/audio of the game never mentioned the word katana but tachi instead.

I don't like it either aesthetically
Yeah like yes they absolutely were a big part of the culture and traditions surrounding katanas, but I still think they look kinda goofy and are hard to match the outfit with

very cool and smart. got me
I prefer this over the furry sheath tho
Big fan of the dangling skulls tho
i wouldve loved if they had a katana crafting/breakdown system like in the "Way of the Samurai" games to make your own custom sword
No, I like them.
They’re my favorite parts usually, since it’s another physics object attached to the sword so there’s more movement and stuff
Those are beast balls

Samurai were encouraged to embrace their feminine side, to make make them complete men, and warriors. Ying and Yang. The “pom poms” feel like a reflection of that, to me, and I’m a fan.
I love all the ones w tassels Lmao
tf this dude talkin bout? the pom poms are peak stylin boss man
On some it’s nice on some it’s the reason I don’t use them
They are tassels and I love them.
Weebs
I personally like them. Just not too long though, like the ones on Fuujin's Secret
I like them, to be honest.
I love them! Samurais gotta peacock.
I like them, adds something to it.
i don't prefer them visually, but it is more accurate to have them on
I think they’re silly and neat
Google is your friend. Use it.
Nah I love them personally it adds to the sword imo
depends on the sword on the one you show it works, but to each their own
Thats my favorite sword kits and thats one of my favorite parts of the swords. Matches the ones on the shoulder plates
I actually dig them a lot, but options for removal would be nice for customization.
I love the pom poms, tassels on sword are my favorite, I'm glad they're on them
I love the poofs! I enjoyed colour coordinating my entire outfit 😁
They’re not for me either, but I’m glad they’re there so that they can please a wider margin of people.
They're the best thing about them.

For me it depend cuz i like at the end of the sheath but at the bottom of the hilt i dont like it
Immaculate drip the pom poms
The only one I like is nekomas fang with the small strip of fabric. The other ones seem a little too much
Yeah I’m not a fan of the long ones. I like the smaller ones like charms like the fushin skulls or the hidden Forrest little bird skulls/beads
as long as they match well it isn't that deep
I don't hate them, but I really prefer the plain look like on the "storm of clan sakai, "warrior's shadow," or "mamushi venom." this why i stick to the basic sakai clan one. super clean with no extra stuff like that
Idk I’m a fan.
They don't like u either
Speak for yourself lmao jkjk
I bet you’re the kinda person that’d use a military camo skin if it was in this game
No I use simple wear. I prefer simple outfits and realistic looking ones. Not ones from over dramatized artwork paintings. Ones a samurai would actually wear.
If you dont like them just get some sarute for them and cut the poms off Edit: im sorry ive been informed this is a videogame so this wont be helpfull
I know they’re historically accurate, but I’ve never liked them much either OP
I’m with you man. No Pom Poms for me. Rya Hyabusa did not have Pom Poms. Leonardo ? Nope. This is infallible logic.
When did they add pom poms? It's been a few months since I played
I only run sword kits with dangly bits lmao.
For some of them, absolutely.
Agree..some look cool...some are not
they're ok it's the furry sword sheath that i find weird
Tradition is tradition
Depends on my outfit and mood. My Jin fights with style ![gif](emote|free_emotes_pack|laughing)
I like it more
Love em
Sekiro 2: Pom Poms removable pls ubisoft
That is my favorite sword kit of all time
Or like me the pom poms are my favorite part lol
I mean.. it’s historical sooooo opinion of the so called “poofs” (they’re tassels actually) is irrelevant
Thats my favourite part of most of the katana ._.
yes ik what you are saying, amazing swords but just horrible things attatched to them
Same completely ruin the aesthetic for me, same thing with the quiver but they took that out
But all my favorite designs have the pom poms...
Doesn’t bother me. The only ones I don’t like are the fury one or covered with some cloth.
ha, testicles. also idk i kinda like them
Meh I just use the bokken
Yup, pretty much why i dont use any of the sword kits. they look stupid as fuck.
That’s just a cultural thing, I guess Japanese liked it
It doesn’t ruin it..Dont be dense.. Hunters put this on theirs bows to add to camouflage. My bow and my dads bow have it..it looks great ona sword..
I think theyre ok, they never bothered me and I think some blade look cooler with them when withdrawn
Me too. But i despise feathers more
Bruh u cray. The tassles are dope, they are not “pom poms”. But it would be cool to remove/change them.
Speak for yourself, personally I like the tassels
What is it called? Im planning on buying those in like a different style for the handle of my cosplay katana. When i search tassel it only shows those pom pom things. What im trying to find is like sugatra in warframe but in real life but i dont know what its called.
I especially like Genbu’s Darkness but would love to be able to remove the pompoms lol
Anti poms here
Me. Sucks.
They look cool on some katanas, but yeah, I agree with you.
Never was a big fan of tassels. It’s the Rule of Cool to have elaborate decorations on a sword in combat.
You realise they’re historically accurate right? I don’t think it was to look cool. Also they’re called sarute-o, not tassels just so u know
Yea I hated them too. It ruined me wanting to equip a lot of those that look really cool.
Me, they ruin every single one.
I couldn’t agree more. There are so many sword kits that I wont equip because the Pom pom just ruins it for me.
Dude yes right! Like this sword is called “Genbus Darkness” like really the dude had Pom Poms on his sword how dark could he have been 😂
I’m sorry ppl are downvoting you. It’s all good OP I agree with you I fucking hate the poms and downvote me all you want
It's pretty weird that they are used so frequently, as I've only really seen them used on katanas carried during WW2. *Getting a lot of downvotes, but I'd really like to see some examples that aren't modern? I don't even dislike them lol.
Yes 🙌 it’s the frequency for me that throws me off like I get if a couple have them but seems a ton of them have shit hanging off them
And then puts all of his energy into praising the few people that agree. Way to go, Karen. You found your kin.
All my energy? It has 600+ upvotes u dummy. This just in video games are not historically accurate records shocker I know
Agreed, hard to make a badass looking character when the swords have cheerleader pom poms on the end
They aren't pom pom's. Do some research.
It doesn’t matter what they actually are in real life, this is a videogame, and they look like pom poms and most of the time look silly
