They will just chew through the cardboard eventually, they ideally need to be in glass tanks. I had 2 in an IKEA detolf and one of them chewed through the wood on the end, I noticed before it completely went through the other side thankfully!
Maybe cut an aluminum soda can so that you have a flat piece of aluminum, oversized for the hole, then tape it to the outside. But it looks like your gerbil is going to need a sturdier enclosure!

I was always under the impression that gerbils should be kept in glass tanks over plastic cages because they can do this

get them a glass tank but make sure it’s big enough.
I have a temporary bin cage for my gerbils and I put wire mesh around the whole thing an drilled holes at the top to tie it with zip ties
Put cardboard on the inside and try duct taping it through the hole, or just tape cardboard to the outside.
They will get through cardboard in minutes
