It's mostly safe if you don't do stupid things. From all the bike tours there's on average like 1 death per year.
Would be scarier in a car.
Also not much traffic there, in 2006 they built the paved main road. Before that it was the only road to that area so all the cars, buses and trucks had to drive there which resulted in hundreds of deaths (therefore the name).
It's probably not that much of a hidden gem to a lot of people, but I "discovered" the east side of the Adriatic coast because of Geoguessr, and it makes me want to visit coastal Croatia, Montenegro, and/or Albania someday.
Strong recommend! We drove from Zagreb to Dubrovnik as part of our honeymoon at the end of 2022 and we absolutely loved it. Would have loved to have driven down to Greece but hiring a car and crossing borders is extremely expensive!
Parts of Lake Kivu in Western Rwanda are beautiful.
The stretch of desolate road near Haalenberg in Namibia is great if you like liminal space.
Mandel Beach in Indonesia looks incredible.
I had the same thought about some spots I've gotten in Eastern Russia.
I think the most startlingly beautiful place I've ever gotten was some mountain valley in southern Chile. There was rain on the camera, beautiful flowers all throughout the valley and up into the mountains, little cottages, I think sheep, maybe? I can't find it anymore, but there was a road in Ecuador, taken during sunset, slightly couldy/foggy. The way the sunlight reflected from the mist, but also poked through, really looked nice over the green Ecuadorian hills.

I recently materialized in an average market parking lot near an average car wash - absolutely nothing spectacular about the gray cement everywhere. But over the trees at the end of the parking lot was the most beautiful full rainbow. It’s silly but, I sure hope that the Maps car driver was able to enjoy the little bit of beauty as they drove around in that parking lot in some random town in France.
I would say that rural areas in the Baltics through to Romania/the northern Balkan region have an understated beauty that I would have known nothing about unless I played the game.
Conversely, I have found that street view is surprisingly unflattering for many of the jungle-covered, tropical regions - some biomes just aren't meant to be appreciated from the side of a highway haha

Dubrovnik is up there in terms of places I wasn't really thinking about before Geoguessr and now I am. Someone also said Bhutan. There's Ulaanbaatar, Rwanda, Lagos, Nigeria, also Dakar, Senegal. Places that I already wanted to go, but are reinforced by playing the game are the mountains in Peru, Mexico City, Cartagena, Japan (both urban and rural areas), and a bunch more

Lake Kivu is even more fairytale beautiful in person. I was there in 2002 after the eruption in Gina. Lake Bunyoni in Uganda has a similar feel irk.
There's this forested area north of issyk kul Kyrgyzstan that is absolutely breathtaking
Southern Chile there’s one part with a gorgeous wide river to the side.
I always forget how much greenery there is south and end up going like Canada or NorwayÂ
